Project: Digg (custom case) Finished

Fine fine fine. Here's a pic from last week. I'm positive the people at Asus are colorblind thus the motherboard requied a lot of modding. I'm almost positive people will tell me it's stupid to mod the motherboard but I can't help myself. Everything still works so...knock on wood.

Before (best pic of the stock mobo I could find via google):

After (I painted the memory slots, pci slots, replaced other doodads with black doodads, verrrryyyyyyyyy lightly painted the heatsinks silver. added an aluminum/digg cover, light coat over black on caps).

edit: I'm sure the Asus folks are not colorblind but I'm pretty sure they don't care about color when it comes to motherboards. Maybe they should rethink that and only use 2 colors per motherboard instead of 20 :p

psssh! That's not HALF so bad as some others I've seen:

C'mon, Orange, Red, Black, Gold, Green (2 different kinds), Yellow, AND Blue!! OMG! And this isn't even the worst I've seen. Just the worst I could find on newegg on short notice. The stock Asus is positively BEAUTIFUL compared to this and some others.

That being said, you did certainly improve it quite a bit.
;)

The sad part about it is all this work is ruined because the Radeon 1950XTX only comes in one flavor, RED.

I'm making a cover for it but dammit how hard is it to make a black video card? I shouldn't be forced to downgrade just because I want a black video card......hell a blue one even.

Did I mention the motherboard isn't a "true" black either. It's brown. The parallel port card I got from newegg is a true black. It's a matte black but looks 100x better than the motherboard color. *sigh* Can't have performance and looks apparently.

Just slap paint on the motherboard and you'll be singing happy days lmao :)

Overall, can't wait to see the updates :D

Quick question for you: What type of paint did you use on the heat pipes?

I just used one of those metallic chrome paints. I barely sprayed them. You can still see the copper when you look directly at it. The camera made it look nice though.

As far as today's stuff goes, it's on hold. I waited half the day for things to warm up but it just stayed cold. Then when I got to stirring the polyprimer up, it was like clay. Probably should have thought about that yesterday. Ah well....

just something that occurred to me: Ever since Digg is enforcing their trademark, does that mean anything for this mod?

Kevin and Jay are ok with it, they emailed me a while back with the official logo. That was incredibly nice of them btw. Made me even more enthused about the case. Now if only I could finish it in a reasonable time frame.

hopefully its finished within a year of starting it *cough* batman :p

keep up the good work qtip

Polyprimer is such a joy to spray. It's possibly the best filler primer ever. You wouldn't believe how thick this stuff is. There's a bit of texture on some of the routed areas but it brushed right off when I ran my hand over it. Tomorrow will be sanding. Regular primer on Wednesday or Thursday followed by more sanding. Then finally paint. And I know the painting part will be a pain just because.

Speaking of painting, I also did a little bit today. Part of the keyboard, power supply, fan grills, and dvdrw were painted.

I closed up shop after painting so they were still wet when I left. Will have some tomorrow.

Only had a half day today because tuesdays I volunteer at a shelter. So, I sanded all of the small parts on that had polyprimer. The shell of the case will be sanded tomorrow. If I take enough advil the tendonitis goes away long enough for me to sand a case :D

Here's a bit of the painted stuff. I need to take them outside because, the paint looks great in the sun. Most of these things are random parts. I still need to get the LCD painted and the rest of the keyboard but I'm working on one of those right now. I tend to get the painting done in small groups so I don't have to maneuver through the booth when painting. I'd rather do the shell on it's own so it has my full concentration.

wow, even painted the optical drive tray. nice.

I agree... looks great! I've been wondering how to get those out cause I need to paint mine. Guess I'll do a google search ;)

I love close-to-end-of-mod pictures... there's always so much to see and anticipation is so high :D

Ya I've had problems in the past painting the tray. If you paint them and have the DVDRW mounted any way except horizontal, it'll make noise. I kept the clear to only a few coats so it should be fine. I have two painted DVDRWs now (both blue). I bought a 16x before the samsung 18x arrived so I figured why not paint the 18x and use it instead.

So...there's a 16x for sale :D anyone? :D

how do you get passed the thickness of the paint? Seems like the paint would add too much to make it move correctly.

I haven't tested either of these yet. I've painted one before with about 4 layers (2bc, 2cc) and it did fine but we'll see. If they give me problems, I"ll just buy another. They're only $30.

As far as vinyl dye goes, I don't like to use rattle can stuff. :D

I also got half of the case shell sanded today. At that point, my hand and elbow both hurt like hell. The 8 advil I took didn't help so I'll start tomorrow sometime. The rest of the day was spent picking up an M29-Weasel with my brother in law :D

qtip, just saw this in the mobo forums. i think its time to change your mobo :p

You know anyone in the business, let me know :D Hardware doesn't just magically appear at my shop, it drains my account first then it shows up :D

holy crap! That is some amazing stuff your doing there. It's too bad that it couldn't be ready for that LAN but there will be others, do not fret. I really can't wait to see this thing done. It also looks like you got some props from the actual digg.com, very impressive. Keep up the good work man, can't wait to see it done. If all goes well you all should be seeing my project unveiled soon :D I'll keep you posted on that though

Looks nice, but I would have waited until the paint dried to take those pictures, the parts are obviously still wet. ;)

Fantastic job so far, I look forward to seeing how the case itself turns out!

actually....no, i dont :p didnt mean to try and get your hopes up. i know all about computers draining the income. i guess i learned something in accounting, FIFO, doh.

The case was shot with K36 primer a couple of days ago. I started painting the last of the small items today. Not much else was done. I'm trying to let my hand take a break from holding the paintgun and sanding a bunch. Why? Because tendonitis is slowly taking over :p

I need to get the case sanded and finally painted. The wiring might take another day as well.

I sanded the primer but there's a lot of pinholes (probably happened because my gun wasn't spraying right). So I'm going to prime a couple of parts over again on the case.

Hooray for wasting primer.

hey Q, been watching your stuff for a while, I have always wondered, though, why not set up an RSS feed over at your mainpage?

I'm a noob at websites, that's about it. :D My website could use a lot.

If anyone is wondering where this case is, it's getting there. My hands have been really bad from sanding the case and other work. I really need stronger pain killers. It hurts to even hold a paint gun at the moment.

Ever thought about getting a fatter grip for your paint gun? It'd prolly help.

Also, ask you doc about Choline Mag Trisal. It worked wonders for my wrist/hand problems.

I'll give it a shot spange, thanks.

Ok while I wanted this done by now, my hand obviously dictates what I'm doing on this thing. Anyway I finally sanded out all the b/s from the first primer job, cleaned my gun thoroughly, and tried again. It came out perfect. Now a little 320-400 grit sanding and it's on to paint.

edit: I have a regular case and a few laptops to finish up (i.e. paint) before this so I figure it'll be a few days till I paint the digg.

You can't really tell from the pic but it's smooth as hell.

This whole project is amazing. I wish I had the time to do sweet things like this.

Lookin good man!
