The big black box? It's the receiver that's driving my speakers. I having one so I can adjust my headphone volume without having to mess around in windows to change it (yeah it's 2 clicks, but it's more work than turning a knob :p)

I know this is probably the wrong section to post in but does anybody know a way I can go all-out 5.1 with my z-5500's? I just bought them and I use a docked laptop meaning I don't really want to buy a soundcard... Anybody know another way to go digital? Another box to buy that can hook up to the laptop? Anything?

You can't get real 5.1 in games without a soundcard. If you're only concerned with movies, Creative just released a USB solution for this:

If you want it for games man up and buy a laptop x-fi with the surround sound expansion.

It's two pieces but you say you're docked so just leave the expansion with the dock.

I must say I am a bit confused. Do you live in a really tiny apartment or what, cause it looks like everything is surrounding your bed. Its hard to tell.

Otherwise it looks like some nice hardware going on and you def have a creative setup for your main workstation area.

Are the piles of spaghetti strewn about the floor permanent, or are you going to zip-tie the slack?

It's a 4 bedroom with common area near the local university. This room is 12'x10'. I've been ready to move out since May into something with more space. Finding a job has been tough though so I'll be staying here another year.

No way! Here's some products I'm considering to help organize the network.

I lived in an apartment like that in a few years back. I put the bed against the wall, a desk in the recessed wall, and the dresser next to the door. That should give you more room instead of just have a little bit around all sides of the bed.

I got a Fredrik. I am no longer embarrassed to show some pics. I am no longer using some other crappy Ikea desk from my sister.

I'm not too proud of the shelf. Though it is loaded with geekdom.

I got a futon in here.

36" CRT TV. I have found a place for the Spamalot poster, I just need a frame. I have no idea where The Holy Grail poster will go. Fantastic photo though.

There's a desk they provide which fits in the nook area. I like reclining with the monitor arm. This floorplan is inferior to the other one where putting a bed against the wall is easier. Here it blocks access to the window, which is in the lower left corner.

It's a highpoint 2220 sitting in a 32-bit slot. Pretty much crap. Raid 5 write performance is expectedly slow. The e-mail alert setup won't connect to my smtp server, although other smtp alerts like printer toner warnings work flawlessly. Otherwise it's ok. They just released a new card firmware which I believe supports the new 1 TB sata drives. There's other bugs in the smart UI that are kind of annoying. Have no experince with areca or lsi. They may be better. In the future I'll probably go with areca because of what unhappymage says about their quality. There's some nice SAS lsi products too.

do the colors ever get weird on that crt when the stereo is cranked on? :)

When I got it there was some discoloration. And I think recently I've began to see some more as I am sometimes home alone and blast some trance. I have the volume way above 11. Though, I use headphones most of the time for watching movies at night. I have to find a different configuration. But as long as I use headphones I'll be all right for now.

That window in your room is crazy 86drifter, haha. I've never seen an angled window I don't think. Neat though, haha.

It comes with a flaw; The ability to not have a window air conditioner. I have considered getting a room air conditioner but those are upwards of $300.
