normal rolloff at 40hz. My current receiver only allows down to 50 for some damn reason. They did awesome with the tad 60 I had briefly. so awesome my wife made me get rid of the amp b/c she could not hear the tv upstairs lol.

if you kick up the volume they certainly pound in a nice controlled manner. great tonality.

as nearfield monitors go these are niiiice for the $$. they own the usher 520s in terms of sounding real.

speaking of that, my 7 yr old nephew came over and was playing flatout 2 when he said, "It sounds real!" lol that was cool.
 
Frequency response charts can only say so much about a speaker...your amp and source all factors into the final equation...in speakers you even have room treating and placement to contribute even more to the final sound....
if all you look at is frequency charts you might as well buy bose...if the rumors of how they manipulate their demo rooms are true

their design is b&w clone. they are crossoverless speakers with the tweet playing 1/10th to give an edge to cymbals. sound is wonderful. even with budget amping of the pioneer they rock clearly.

However, I don't think 40hz is full range. Full range is defined as 20hz-20khz.

did I mention that I have the Tad 12" sub of love? not pictured or used very much lol. it shakes everything lol.

we need a bigger house for the bastard. Most stereo speakers that are full range only go to 30 max. 20hz is serious svs or w/e super sub territory.

now if you pay $5K for some floor standers I would want 28 hz at least out of them.

For bookshelves 50HZ is fine. These rolloff at 40 but reach 32 I believe. They pounded something serious with the TAD 60 amp.
 
'wall-mounted' my front speakers to the notice board using drawing pins lol! Keeps them secure and free's up a bit of desk space :)

That looks like a student dorm, is it? Because I would KILL for that much deskspace :( I want enough room to have my triple LCD/working area as well as CRT + TV gaming/watching area :(
 
yep student accomodation. was lucky because its a brand new building and we are the 1st year to stay there so everything's mint and modern. The desk is huge but still manage to completely fill it when ive got my papers out :p
 
my desk is about as big as yours, but i dont have the end thing. im in a really old dorm that was built in 1928. I guess they built things a lot bigger back then because the rooms are quite large and much better than the dorms on campus that popped up pre-2000

Does 1928 class as 'really old' in the US? My dorm building last year was 1896 & that wasn't considered particularily old!
 
^^ It does in my book. But they built to last back in those days. As long as the electrical and whatnot has been upgraded multiple times since then you're fine. The college I went to was built in the 1960s. And at times it showed.

Parts of my university were built in the 1400's... now that's history!

WRT screens, I have been cycling through different combinations of LCDs/CRTs for a couple months now. When the parts for my new machine get here (can't wait), I'm probably going to be running it triplehead with a 17" & 2x 15" LCDs, with the 17" cloned onto a 21" CRT for movie watching, with my laptop on the side somewhere. Plus a 21" CRT TV in the other corner for Dreamcast/PS2 playing. So only a total of 6 screens if you include the laptop! I'll still have another 20" CRT & 15" LCD spare :)
 
I got my dad's classic TT set up (technics SL-1500 direct drive), its just crackling a little here and there ( a new cartridge should easily remedy it)

Analog audio is sick...im going through classic rock LP's and having a ball enjoing music that gets stuck in my head so easily
Makes me want to go spend money on more modern artists that i love so much (Muse, Distrubed, System of a Down, AFI, Breaking Ben)

Still needs some paint, but it will serve well. Desk in my dorm isn't too wide, and the thought of moving my laptop off-center because the speaker was too wide was... unattractive, at best. $20 and an hour or so of work later, and I have a workable alternative... albeit somewhat ugly :p

ignore the tight speaker wire, I took pics before cutting and redoing the zip ties holding everything together.

Filled with sand and assorted heavy objects. Not ideal, but it will get me through 6 months until I'm back on a reasonably sized desk.

Unfortunately they sink straight into the carpet, haha. My dorm is tiled, though, so the small-ish ones that are on there now will be more than enough.
 
monty: Flip your desktop speakers upside down. The treble's gonna reflect off of everything and sound worse as they are.

and wow .... they have an amazing sound, and for their small size they put out an great amount of bass, but not boomy in any way. i switched my subwoofer off and still had the low end punch.:D:cool::D

My parent's gave me the Cambridge Audio Azur 540C, which is quite good. I'm going to buy some new speakers in February, either Dynaudio Focus 220 or Spendor S8e...

P.S. Those are my Dads 210 Anniversary Editions, with a JL Audio Phatom f113... we have the midrange "ring" around the ribbon tweeter, like the 600 series speakers

i auctually live those homemade speaker stands, just gotta do something about that glue that seeped out and some paint would help to.

Paint is definitely in order. I don't know if I'm gonna do the base(s) as well or not, but the PVC and flanges will definitely get something sprayed on tomorrow afternoon. I'm pretty impressed with it thus far; rolled out of bed this morning, hit my arm on the speaker and it didn't tip over.

Nice set-up! Those Elacs look great and I've heard some great things about Splendor too.

Lol, that blue stuff is bad news. I had to do some repair to one of the pvc pipes that hooks our sprinkler system up and that stuff spilled all over my hands, itching hands ftw. :p

Umm, because they're Polk? JP, the real reason is that they were meant to be stand mounted rather than table mounted and therefore would not be reflecting off of anything anyway.

I was fine with the blue glue, it was sticky enough that it didnt drip too much.

The purple joint primer, however... *shudder*. I have two purple-dyed fingers now! Could be worse, I could be a smurf.

the smaller creative speakers you see everywhere are for my gaming rig but soon to be replaced by a REAL recv + paradigm or polk speakers

while bigger speakers generally are better, those aren't going to do that well nearfield.... Though I've seen much worse use of big speakers in a nearfield situation.
 
seems kind of clumsy considering you would have to turn around in order to use that work station.....I would think they would work better sitting next to each other.
 
Probably to check his stuff while he's gaming? I wouldn't mind having a little Eee for that stuff when I'm playing games or watching a movie.
