Post your Speaker setup PICS!!!!!!

I think these anti-vibration mounts for DACs are subjected to the fundamental rule of audio - if it sounds good to you, then that's good (even if it is just placebo).

If it's placebo, I don't agree that it's good. I think the listener needs to be a bit more informed and be cogniscent enough to weed through what actually works and what doesn't.

It is not a placebo. I just had my wife do a blind test and she could tell the difference.

I don't have much space in my room because of this system...it would be nice to go smaller, but that costs $$$...

I got mine for $30 just to see if it works. This setup does make a difference in my system. Noticeably more clean and clear sounding.

If I lived near you I'd bet you a grand that you wouldn't be able to tell the difference blindfolded. If, with a third party skeptic present, your wife could tell which was which 9 times out of ten blindfolded then you might have something. I'm guessing that's not what you did.

Shoo troll, get out of here.

Some of us actually enjoy reading through these threads so please keep your witty banter to yourself.

Spaceman, if you can hear a difference that's great. For $30 you aren't out much, especially not compared to the isolation platforms that start at $500 and go up from there. I personally have not noticed a large difference when it come to isolating digital components from vibration but I've found that vinyl really needs a stable platform to perform at its best so I don't think that in all cases it is entirely unnecessary. How do you like your Ori by the way? Even though I've been trying to get out of audio, I've been thinking about upgrading my system with a new DAC. I was thinking about a Monarch or a Theta but I've always heard great things about the Oris.

Viynl certainly needs it more lol.

Look, I am just saying it works for me when I was entirely trying it to call bs on the theory but.....

The Ori scales up and up so far I have heard it with an excellent amp and ok speakers. I can say for the $$ it plays as hyped. Clean, clear and sweet. Love listening to it.

Exactly.... why so many computers?

cuz its cool..... actaully the crap i need on my main workstation really bogs down the system if i game as well, so i got a little beater box for $350ish which actaully turned out to be really fast.

scanner, printer, webcam, VMware, etc, etc all slow your system down to crap.

while my gaming machine is running tinyxp without even an antivrus, absolute CLEAN install, no garbage.

beater box is running athlon X2 4200, 2GB ram, so it runs super quick for VMware.

seems kind of clumsy considering you would have to turn around in order to use that work station.....I would think they would work better sitting next to each other.

yeah i know its annoying, the room is physically too small to have the computers sit next to each other, with those speakers. i was rearranging things for AT LEAST 2 hours before coming up with that setup.

when my office is done in the basement ill have way more room

edit: i no longer have a gaming rig actaully :( sold all the parts and 15.4" laptop for 12" laptop

With respect to the vibrapods, isolation platforms, disc treatments and other tweaks, I have used them all for years and I am not convinced they do much, if anything.

I don't believe you have to be able to identify the effect of every tweak in an A/B test, however. Simple things like isolating components from vibration will do no harm and aren't very expensive. The way I use such tweaks is not to improve the sound, per se, but rather to eliminate certain variables that might be having an impact on the sound. It is for piece of mind. You don't have to detect a difference. It is enough that you know that excessive vibration is not a factor in what you are hearing, it doesn't matter if you can hear a difference.

Vibration is a variable that might impact sound on some level and taking it out of the equation is perfectly rational. You just have to keep in mind that there are many variables that affect how we percieve sound, including mood, level of alertness, ect. You can probably tweak the sound by having a beer or a glass of wine, for example. Is there more detail or are you more relaxed, or are you just listening closer because you expect the tweak to make a difference, or even if you don't expect it, are you listening closer simply because you are conducting a test? I'm always skeptical about such tweaks, but as long as they are cheap and not too inconvenient, why not?

Well saud. I agree. They are cheap to try and look silly so why not!

Here's my setup, got it up and running again...the HPs are kinda in the way so I decided to give this way a go and it actually sound pretty good.

I use my old Sharp SD-NX10 as the amplifier for the JBL E30s, signal just goes to the amplifier, only thing the preamp is for is to turn it on as the board that the inputs/outputs on the back has become somewhat detached from the connectors by fault of me moving it around a lot. Oh well, works fine this way, just straight from whatever into the sub amplifier then to the speaker amplifier. I've got a parts express amp from a few years ago powering the sub which is an alpine 10" type-R, cost me $80, works well for the price.

Anyway:

Do you mind me asking what distro(s) you run? Also, how quiet are those HPs? Also also, good to see somebody other than me who still uses 4:3 (I can't stand widescreen for anything other than watching widescreen movies!)

Any more pics of the sub? Looks like a very well made box with good materials!
Yeah I've got one somewhere, I was lazy when I built it but eh it holds up well. It's got the 2 ends then 2 side boards and the top and bottmo are the "in-most" ones, I've got 2 support brace inside it which is like a 1/4 the size of the front and back. Just some MDF I picked up at home depot.

I've got:
ubuntustudio 7.04 on my sun (right of right-most HP)
HP-UX 11.11 on the HPs
ubuntu server on the "sony" underneath the sun
overclockix on my IBM rackmount (on the floor)
linux mint on my sony T250

I kinda picked random CDs and that's why what's what is on the non-HPs, lol.

The monitors are 5:4...the HPs aren't loud but you can definitely tell they are on if the room is quiet, the IBM rackmount is much louder (3u x342), they're louder than Suns but quieter than SGIs.

HMM, you should really mount that plate amp! That would be awesome, although I do not know how it would fair in a trunk with the plate amp, 120v converter anyone :p

My Intermezzo 3.5c center channel is supposed to arrive today via Fedex but hasn't yet, and I'm getting antsy. Not that it matters, the rest of my system is in storage because I just moved, but I just want it here and safe.

Bad pictures, but they're all I took while I was still in Vancouver:

The speakers are the Sonus Faber Guarneri Homage, and the power amp is a Pass Labs Aleph J. I use an EMU-1212m in my 'HTPC' to switch between computer-based output (FLAC) and the X360's optical output, and route either through coaxial out to the Resolution Audio Opus 21.

The Opus 21's transport is kind of a waste since I hardly ever listen to CDs.

I don't believe in cables or tweaks (other than room tweaks & speaker placement), so I am using some DIY speaker and XLR cables.

Just a quick random question akwok, is that one of the Sony HD-Ready TV's? I have one that looks exactly like that, 50" and I was wondering if the 360 looks good on it, and if it outputs regular HD resolutions. I have no idea what model it is
If that's not the TV, then sorry l0l

Like why do those speakers cost that much?!?!??! I could see maybe the DAC and amp costing that much, but I mean those speakers don't look too special.

Most non-Best Buy/Circuit City buyers don't buy speakers just based on how they look. Even if someone were to do so, the whole Homage line looks clean, classy, and stylish, nothing over the top or bling, in simple drop dead gorgeous imo. Though, I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder. If you've ever heard a Sonus Faber though, you'd know why they cost so much. Aside from the top offerings from Avalon Acoustics and and Focal JMLab, both of which I've never heard yet (And hope I never will!), I can't imagine a speaker sounding better than the Sonus's. I love the Sonus house sound and that wasn't even with their top of the line Homage anniversary line. I think if I heard the Stradivari's, I wouldn't even be able to plug in my RB-25s. If I ever get back in to audio, I will definitely be basing my rig around one of Sonus Faber's floorstanders.

From it's specs it seems just a regular bookshelf speaker in a glorified box. No flame intended either.

Yeah like most electronics, most speakers are hard to judge by specs alone. If you ever get a chance to audition them, they really have to be heard to be understood. It also doesn't hurt that you can pick up most Sonus Fabers for about half or a little more of their retail used. :D

I saw an inside view of a sonus speaker once on the net somewhere. Overbuilt and very detailed. Lots of support beams going every which way. If I ever get speakers, chances are I'll go the Sonus route.

p.s. love the juxtaposition of the guitar hero axe and the speaker :)

Where's the sub?

Did he mention a sub in his post?

No, which is precisely why I asked. HT and gaming on bookshelves with no sub? No thanks. 2 channel you can maybe get away with it (I'd still have one, but at least an argument can be made for leaving it out). Not so with HT and gaming. No sub and you're missing a very large (and VERY important) part of the audio spectrum.

Buying a 10k pair of bookshelves and no sub is like buying a 100k dollar car and no gas. Sure, you can still enjoy it somewhat, but not the way it's meant to be.

maybe the bookshelves create enough bass for his liking? Although i personally like subs not to much a fan of subway tho more mr.subb fan, oh yeah i like subwoofers to.

46 Hz just isn't low enough for HT (or gaming, I would think, although I've never seen a frequency analysis of typical games). I would say it's not even really a matter of opinion, you're not hearing the audio the way it's meant to be heard.

Either he thinks he doesn't need a sub, in which case I'd like to try and enlighten him on what he's missing.

Or he just hasn't gotten around to getting a sub, in which case I'm curious what he's looking at to mate with his excellent speakers.

Contrary to popular belief, there are people who do NOT want earth-rattling bass when they listen to music!

I do not watch movies at home -- I can see why a sub would be very important if I did, though. Most (if not all) of the music I listen to do not dip below the frequency response of my speakers..

Yeah me either. I do most of my listening with the sub off. It intrudes on the details a bit.

Games and movies it is party time though lol.

You miss out on a lot of what speakers are ment to be (IMO) feeling the music in your bones, aside from the great soundstaging...Most the music i listen to, modern rock, alternative, etc. is played live with in the chest hitting bass, and it helps me really groove, headphones can replicate the highs, mids, and detailed bass well. Others dont like the emphasis on bass. I respect that opinion

On the topic of tweaks, does anyone with high end setups notice a difference with power conditioners? or is it just to protect your gear from electrical damage? dont mean to start another war or anything here

Some neat gear in this thread, read through it all last week or two, would love to see some of the nicer stuff off of desks, or given some sort of placement/setup work.... I recently moved in, so the walls and shit are still kinda bare in the pix..

My gear...
-Samsung 4254t 42" Plasma 720p
-Onkyo TX-SR805 Receiver
-Sony 400 Disc MegaChanger
-Comcast HD-DVR
-PS2 + version
-Xbox 360 Elite
-B&W 602 S3 Main speakers
-JBL PB-10 Sub
-Harmony 360 Remote
-Monoprice HDMI, Optical, Coax cables
-Monster Z1 speaker cables I got for a song, looking to upgrade to bi-wires, maybe do monoprice or Blue Jeans,

Media in the cabinet, game controllers, guitars, remotes for everything, massage pillow, manuals inside the black ottoman on the right.

Time to fill this bitch up...
IMG_0234.jpg

No room treatments yet, will probably just stick to a couple pillows in corners, etc.. I've had the receiver for about a month and half, and absolutely love it. The new burr browns in it let me keep the usability of my cd changer, but have really stepped up the sound quality of the entire system.

Looking at doing some new speaker cable, the rubber covering the terminals is just falling apart on the Monster wire, also would like to get some Bi-wire setup and use the bi-amping capabilities of my Onkyo's rear surround channels. Monoprice and Blue jeans cable are stuff i've looked at so far, any suggestions?

Also looking at getting the new 600 series FST center and some surrounds to complete the 5.1 package, 7.1 wouldn't be easy in my apartment though...

I want an 805, but currently my speakers do not deserve such an upgrade.BTW, how does the Harmony handle the Onkyo? Thinking of getting one myself, and how does it handle the TV's menu?
