Makes a lot of sense. If you are using speakers nearfield like that, you might as well point them straight at your head, as off-axis frequency responses drop precipitously in the high frequency range [exactly what you heard]

Old Aiwa stereo speaker (floor) the stereo broke and too cheap to repair but the speakers work nicely.

Linksys WMLS11B internet stereo on top of the monitor. Figured out how to stream music to it from winamp as well. Pair of Altec Lansing speakers on the side of the monitor.

Other Aiwa speaker (floor). The 2 Aiwa speakers are being powered by a cheap ($7.00) pair of wall socket powered AOpen speakers. And they definitely drive the Aiwa speakers nicely.
 
alright, got a receiver (hk avr130) and my center beta c250 came to compliment the 50's, and i made a stop at goodwill for some 60w rms mitsubishi m-ss5 surrounds also

it certainly sounds a million times better than my z680's now even without a sub (no more sloppy, behind the beat bass), though i will eventually get one despite the formidable bass already present with my mains

haha, yeah i just quick threw together a 4x4 with a couple supports and a top platform with some scrap wood i had laying around :p

I once thought highly of Bose, Meridian, B&W, et cetera until I realized that simply mixing it up a little can provide exactly what you've been looking for. (e.g. Energy satellites and 10" sub, mixed with Vivid TX-1000 towers powered by a Yamaha DTS Receiver sounds unbelievable.) Mixing offbrands really pays off, but takes a lot of "window shopping".

(Just add an LFE unit and you'd have a [0..24]KHz range!)

Actually Champagne is usually served in a flute glass. This glass is called a Hurricane or Grand Exotic usually used for tropical or frosted drinks. It would be more appropriate to use an All Purpose wine glass (aka Water glass) for milk, but WE'LL LET IT SLIDE THIS TIME JUSTINKOKO...

1) digital mind, what kind of TV is that, bad ass!! And do you use it for PC or just TV/xbox

2) how do you guys switch between headphones and speakers when you are gaming? i have to change it directly on the sound card :( :(

Ok, new placement of things. Sounds better then the old setup.
I tried them pointing "straight out", but it just did'nt sound right. It was lacking to much of the highs so I used a little toe-in.

What speakers do you have? Some have a headphone jack built in which cuts out the speakers when you plug the headphones in.

I have an optical out on my reciever that goes to an outboard dac which feeds my headphone amp. So both are on all the time, then I can just turn off the headphone amp when I don't want it on.

Yea, I noticed your receiver in your dorm room pics.

Its a Denon AVR-685S (aka 1705).
 
fugu, nice little setup you have there. The speakers are nice looking with that wood color to me. And the fish tank is cool also :) :)

How do they sound for the price?

Also, are you much of a poker player? I think I see one of those metal poker chip cases if im not mistaken.

Thanks, I'm very happy with them =)

For the price, I don't have that much to compare them to. The center is clearer than the one that came with my friend's Fluance 5 speaker set. Likewise, the sub extends lower and is tighter than both my Promedia 5.1 sub and my other friend's Onkyo HTIB sub. They sound pretty good (clear?) for music also, but again I don't have a good reference point in the ~$1000 price range and I'm using them more for HT.

Yep, those are chips ;) I'll play a casual game maybe once a month or so with friends, $5-10 buy in, nothing big. The set was pretty cheap at Costco and it ended up paying for itself after several games =)

I've got the Sennheiser USB headset and when I plug it into the USB port it automatically disables the Soundcard.

I missed this one, sorry about that. It's a Mycom, which is basically a rebadged Philips labeled with a stores name on it. What specific version it derived from I don't know, but it's a 26" 720p 16ms screen, and I'm too lazy to look up the contrast ratio and brightness :D Most likely something around 500:1. I use it for pc sometimes, but not a whole lot. Mainly it's my xbox and movie screen.

I updated the hell out of that place since those photo's, new receiver, dvd player, turntable, preamp, headphone amp, headphone.

i just noticed more than half the forums members don't even run pc speakers anymore. we've all gone receiver and ht speakers. either that or headphone/amp.

btw, mag can u list all the extra stuff for ur comp setup? i notice you got a sling box, a whole bunch of cable boxes etc. looks like u have a regular pc and an htpc. anything else?

I have been running a reciever since I found out the sb live had digital jack on it. :) I never could go back to pc speakers once I started using monitors in my home studio (which I gutted a few years ago)

PPA 2 built by MisterX on the left speaker, Comcast HD PVR so I can watch HD on my 2405, surprised you noticed the slingbox.. I just got it yesterday! I can now watch my cable everywhere I go on my laptop and plan on using the extra input to put a live camera on it, Pioneer Elite vs26tx THX Ultra below the Comcast box, Terratec M3PO CD/HD Mp3 player above my Silverstone LC10M which "used" to be my media center pc. I killed that idea and made it into my exchange mail server / iis box where I host my pics, and my Entec dac is on the small shelf I built on the left. My main rig is at the bottom right.

I had that same poster back in the day... that thing was HUGE. Once I mounted it to foam core.. I couldn't figure out how to get it back home. lol

i really need to clean up a bit.. but fuck that.. maybe when i get some time..

those bose 501's aren't hooked up.. i don't like them.. and they need refoamed.. i am deciding what to do with them.. refoam.. put in cheap drivers.. put in good drivers.. or sell them or something..

not that i have a whole lot to describe, but i will describe the audio at least..

speakers are bic venturi dv62si. i got them 3 years ago or so with the intention of sending in the crossovers to get modded. but never felt the need.. they immediately made my bose acoustomass cubes sound like they had pillows in front of them.. they are a little big, and look a little cheap.. but they sound great.. best $114 i have ever spent..

the subs are solobaric s12c's two models before they went square. they are small sealed box only.. that's why i built a 5 cubic foot slot ported box for them. the box is tuned to about 25 hz and has about 40 sq inches of port. i orignally built the box for some adire shivas, but got the solos off ebay after figuring they would theoretically work.. and damn they do.. i got in trouble many times for shaking the dorm with them.. people 6 rooms away said that they felt like they were in a car with subs and it felt like their was pressure on their head. the box spent some time in my van.. but really is tuned to low.. and i had a small 65x2 amp on them.. they were still pretty impressive..

amp is an nad 2150.. i never got around to getting a matching 2200 power envelope.. but maybe someday.. i kinda moved it into my room one day and claimed it.. my dad has jokingly tried to trade it back a few times.. same goes for the HK citation 11 preamp.. both stuff is old and rock solid.. and sounds great...

and there is some pioneer reciever on the bottom that i got from a friend who got from a friend.. it was free.. it powers the subs well, especially when i flip the "tone" switch for some reason.. i should f-mod the subs for lowpass, but never got around to it.. i had a car crossover hooked up to a comptuer psu for a while.. but it was ghetto, even though it sounded good.. and worked.. now its in a box about 1000 miles away...

and that's that..
 
mag, let me kno how the sling box works. i was thinkin about getting one, but many people say that the picture is really small, and the resolution that it displays is like 320x320 or sumthin

i think we should make it mandatory to describe our set ups in the pics.

I think the slingbox is great... you can size the picture up too.. you aren't stuck at low res. You can size it to any size (as big as you make the window) I was able to watch tv over a verizon wireless card today and was surprised at the quality. If you size it up.. it looks a little blurry.. but the main reason I bought it was when I travel and not having a tv in the bedroom.. you can mess around with the video settings to make the picture optimal but it does a good job in auto mode. It was super easy to setup too. Also keep in mind that over the LAN the video will scale optimally for your speed. It does a good job over the net too.
