GS-1 was a good amp to me... good memories.... shouldn't have sold it.

Joey

looks like the exact same layout as the gilmore light... just modular

Surprisingly though, I found it quite better.

the gs-1 looks like it comes with a nice built in powersupply... the g-lite has a crappy wall wart... just look at the pics its the exact same amp pretty much

You can buy an external power supply for the G-lite. The amp and supply is $500, which is still $150 cheaper than the GS-1.

also what headphones are you planning on using with it? IIRC the dynalo (gilmore light) dosent do so awesome with grados (or other very low impedence headphones)

UE 5 pros came in today. I've been rocking out with these things. Super punchy bass!

Intimate, but fun. Listening to Symphony X....I love it. The vocals are forward, the drums are forward, the guitar is slightly recessed.....lovely mids, nice and warm, thumpy low end, and a clear, sparkly high end!

The bi flange tips (pictured) put more emphasis on the high frequency ranges. I prefer the normal tips, so I threw those on.

Lovely headphones. Well worth the price.

In my case, the GLite DPS didn't make a noticible difference.
Going from the GLite DPS to the GS-1 though was a welcome change!
It improved the soundstage quite a bit (both in terms of width and depth). That last upgrade I did made a huge difference
DT770pro 250ohm + Audigy 2 ZS + GLite w/ DPS
to
Darth Beyer DT770pro 80ohm + USB PLUS Constantine DAC + GS-1

Well worth the upgrade!

One day I'ld not mind owning a GS-1, and a Darth Beyer. However, in the pipeline is a Millet Hybrid and a few thousand dollars in Grado's. I am thinking MS-2, Headphiled HF-1's, and RS-1's before I get off the Grado train and try something else. From there, it will either be a Darth Beyer, K701, or some Senn... I really don't know. That is a ways off.

ya but you did two changes at once, your usb dac and the amp... and the audigy2 analog outs blow goats... i used an audigy2 for a while so i know that... (actually still do use it, but just analog out)

have you heard both?

i havent, but going off these two photos...

the only difference (besides obviously the powersupply) is the GS1 added two large panasonic FC caps (probably powersupply filtering near the boards) and two red film caps... probably with the same function...

either way, they are both good amps, and justin in a real nice guy to work with...

anyhow, im building one of these over the winter break hopefully :)

Joey has owned both the GLite & DPS and GS-1. I think he even had them side by side!

He did, and he wrote a nice little comparison between the two. After trying all three (GLite, GLite with DPS, and GS-1), I have to say I agree with what he found.
The GLite is nice, but if you want more, and are thinking of getting the DPS to go with it, might as well just spring for the GS-1. You get few more features (adjustable gain, multiple imputs, preamp out, two headphone outs), and it's all in one unit (I didn't like having two individual units).

They weren't all at the same time though (although within a few weeks of each other).
First thing I got was the DAC, then the amp about a week or two later. I was used to the sound of the DT770pro 250ohm with the new DAC and my little PA2v2. But, when the GS-1 came and I switched out the PA2v2, it was a big change. (this was before my Darth Beyers came). Less bass, and a much bigger soundstage were instantly noticible. The PA2v2 was really holding my setup back.

The reason the GS-1 has a modular design is that Justin planned on producing better/different modules in the near future. I believe one of these new modules [not a gilmore design] is already in production and may come stock in new GS-1s. Depending on when the GS-1 in question was purchased, it may not have gilmore lite modules installed.

That said, the PSU does make a huge difference. I've heard 4 DIY Dynalo implementations and all of them sounded different.

i dunno, i built a dynalo and it was pretty nice... but my dynamight blows it away... actually it blows away every amp i have ever heard... even ray samuels said it was a beautiful sounding amp and "you should be very proud of it" and consindering the history between ray and kevin... i was impressed he would say such nice things ;)

but ya, i wanted to make the 2007 meet, unfortunately that weekend is the Miami MS150 bike tour to raise money for the Multiple Sclerosis Society and I am a committee member so there is no way I can miss the weekend... sigh...

who knows, maybe 08 will be in south florida :)

Does it move, or is it always in California? I'd love to see it make its way to Chicago... only way I would ever see myself there.

yea, it does. Last year I belive it was in new york.

Strange. For some reason I remember it being in California last year also.

Nope, we just have insane 2-day meets here in Cali every year, sometimes more than once a year :D

hey.. I'm game for that one!

Really, its the only way I could ever go to one. My car isn't fit for and cross country driving, and I aint putting my gear on a plane. Chicago I could either drive, or take the train. It would be roughly an hour trip regardless of which method I chose.

Well... yeah, of course the dynahi is better than the dynalo. I used to own a dynahi myself and found it to be a competent amp with lots of power. I prefered it over the dynalo even with low impedance headphones. As for it blowing away every other amp I've heard, that would be a big no... though it would make it in to my top 10. But we've probably heard different amps and have different tastes. ;)

EDIT: It is also worth pointing out that my old dynahi and your self made dynahi are likely quite different from eachother due to different power supplies and parts choice. :)

In that case... 2008 needs to be in Chicago. It's a good central location
There was some talk that the 2008 meet would be in Toronto so that it could truely be called the 'International' Head-Fi Meet, but that was when Tyll was more involved and I have no idea if that is still the plan.

The meet in NYC was great, and I'd love to make the one in Cali, but I don't think it is going to work out financially. I just can't justify taking a $650 flight to go on a vacation with my headphones. :p

Yay! It's a little soon to tell, but I think I may have a nice present waiting for me Christmas morning.

I can't wait to find out! :D

Hooray! HD580's arrived today from amazon. 650 cable should be here soon, and Sennheiser tells me the 600 grills will ship in under two weeks. I hope they are right. I have not listened yet, I am going to give them some break in time first. Right now, they are chilling on the dresser, hooked to the PA2V2 and Ipod. I'll let that go for a few more hours and then switch them to the home setup and let the ipod charge while I sleep. I don't plan to use them until Christmas day. I should be able to hit around 100 hours of burn in before they hit my ears.

Merry Xmas..580's are a nice headphone. With a liitle power behind them, they are even better. The up-graded cables help..I did the same with mine when I had them. Ran them thru a Pimeta. What is your source?

Source is a PC with X-Fi, going to a Headfive amp. In researching the headphones, some seem to say the Headfive does a great job driving the HD580. Others have commented that they don't have good synergy. I suppose I will find out soon enough, but I really don't see myself getting a different amp for these cans. I am very happy with this Headfive, and my next amp is going to be a Millet Hybrid to help the Grado's shine.

I really enjoyed the Millet I tried on my MS-1s. Even with the MS-1s not being as bright as the standard grado line, I find them too bright. The millet did a nice job of toning that down and bringing the bass up to a nice level.
