whats so special about those headhphnoes that make them worth $15 000? are they made of gold and diamonds or something?
It's not 15K, the headphones are $5K.

No.. they are $6.5k-$8k, the last nice pair sold for $7.9k NOS (which is what I have) a few months ago. You'd be hard pressed (well, I was anyways) to find one for $5k nowadays, even if from the Jan Meier batch where all 18 were accounted for in one day last summer for $5500 to Americans (~$6500 to Europeans) shipped. The $7.9k NOS one was one of these 18, just that it was never opened for a year.

A few weeks ago well used pair sold for around $6500 in the UK, less shipping.

Which is why I was saying, they are not too far off of the used pricetag of the Summits ($7.1k on the 'gon http://cls.audiogon.com/cgi-bin/cls.pl?spkrplan&1172764141, saw another one a few months ago for under $7k). :p

I can't comment on the sound as I'm waiting for my Aristaeus, which should pop up in a week or two.

just got them last night. even unburned in, i love the way it sounds compared to my hd595's. i can't even imagine how they sound burning in.

Welcome to the club Laxx.

How's the comfort compare to the HD595. Do they have less clamping force?

so far, the 701's aren't that uncomfortable, but they aren't that comfortable either. it clamps pretty tightly on my big head, but that's normal for all new phones to me. my 595's are somewhat broken in and feel good on my head. the only complaint i have with the 701's right now is that i wish the earpads were oval in design, like sennheisers. =T maybe then my big ass ears would fit inside.

Geez.... that's quite a bit of moolah.

Yeah, it's about the same as my Summits (used). Though the ML Summit's retail price is going up to $12K (from $10K) this 1/2007 or 2/2007 per ML corporate... which should bump up the used prices a bit also.

All in all... this is a very expensive hobby. Whoever turned me into this monster should be shot.

:) :p

Well.. just be glad it's not one big splurge! Funny how we both pretty much meet back at the same place a year later.. :D

It's amazing how we started out the exact same last year and we end up the exact same (albeit one is with headphones and one is with speakers) spot.... that is funny! Well... I'm beginning to think that I should move into headfi once more... but not go Orpheus level like you.. too much moolah, Adrian!

When are you going to move a bit into the speaker side of audio? I remember we talked about a pair of Sonus Fabers several months ago, earlier this year.

Anyway, good luck with the Aristaeus and let me (or I'll find your review on headfi) know about how the combo goes for ya and if you've truly quenched any upgraditis with regards to the headphone side of audio....

As I said previously to you, the minute I get a proper room I'm tossing all of these headphones. I am 100% a speaker guy! I currently have my eyes on a pair of Sonus Faber Amati Homages, so I'll trade in the headphones for those (and other things) once I start post-grad.

:D

WTH???

$27,000 speakers??? Whoa... that's beyond my current capabilities. I'm looking at the Sonus Faber Stradivari for when I graduate though.... ;) ... been looking at those for quite some time now.

$27,000 is list price, but they pop up on Audiogon regularly for ~$12000 (http://cls.audiogon.com/cgi-bin/cls.pl?spkrfull&1171597465), so it's in a more affordable price bracket. The Stradivari is too much, they're about $35k-$45k on Audiogon.

This is one thing I'll have to audition and not buy blind first, though.

It is likely I will fund the Amatis with the HE90 and the Aristaeus, keep my DAC (whatever DAC I have at the time), and go with a Pass Labs amp.

Again, all null and void unless I can find a near-perfect listening room.

You guys shop for audio gear like women shop for purses and shoes. If it costs more, it must be better and I must have more of it and more expensive stuff than the other guy :p

For 15k, I could buy a $2000 worth of audio equipment that has 95% the capabilities of your stuff and a new Yamaha R1 to get out of the house and really enjoy life on.

How is Grey Goose an acquired taste? :D BTW, there is vodka for getting wasted, and there is vodka for enjoyment, GG is of the latter category ;)

Only reason to drink vodka is to get really drunk... well, thats how it is for me. If I wanna enjoy it, I'll have a nice beer.

So what do you guys listen to on your ridiculous headphones? Just wondering if all that equipment goes to waste playing Britney Spears.
:D

Actually, I like a lot of guitar music.
Mostly rock (think: Metallica, Rammstein, Queensryche, Judas Priest, etc)
Some classical (Like: Star wars soundtrack, Memoirs of a Geshia soundtrack, etc)
Lot's of strange and funky stuff. Right now I'm into classical japanese music, so the Shamisen is really on my top list, as is the koto and Biwa. I also like the classical guitar (classical and flemenco).
I play some games like UT2004. Headphones give you such an advantage, it's funny!
Of course, for watching movies on my computer.
Can't forget doing my own guitar and vocal recording. ^_^
General computer use. Including hours of searching youtube for something funny or interesting.

I get a lot of use out of my headphones.

Dang Adrian.... you really wents balls out, didnt you? Amazing that your headphone costs about half of my speaker pair.... and those arent even more than 1 lb! You know, now that you have arguably the best headphones on the planet, you now know that you have nothing else to upgrade to, right?

Nice acquisition though..... havent heard the Orpheus but I want to.

;)

I have heard the HE90 a few times, they are an amazing set of headphones... i think my K1000's still beat them on a few fronts, soundstage being the most immedietly obvious...

the HE90s have this soft warm sound that audiophiles seem to get huge wood over...

I actually prefer the HE60s to the 90s (my wallet sighs in relief) when i have compared them side-by side at meets (using the same amps, my HE60 has an HE90 connector on it)

ironically since i finished my dynamight i cant get my DT880s off my head... they sound just right in my system

Man im so excited after reading that, i won the bid for the HE-60's and the HEV-70 and ill have to post pics when it gets here monday! Woot baby orpheus is coming :D

I just recently received a new amp, thanks to MisterX :)

Sounds freaking great with the Ultrasones! Gonna get a dock line out cable soon.

I liked the HE60s too when I had them, but even out of the 007t it was too thin and bass shy to be my main headphone (I had the Omega IIs at the time as well). The OIIs worked much better as an overall phone. The only thing the HE60 had going for it was it's sense of airiness, I guess, but it did that very, very well.

I had the 007t tuberolled for maximum warmth too, but it still didn't fix the HE60's flaws.

Adding more body to the HE60 while retaining it's airiness would've made a near perfect headphone, and hopefully that is what the HE90 is. I still have a week to go until I can hear the HE90, but at least it's comfier than the HE60! (which was my previous benchmark for comfiness).

I owned the K1000 with the Aleph 3 recently (and my M24 tube DAC), and it sounded great (the best dynamic phone I've owned yet), however it was still a bit too bright for my tastes. The soundstage was great, but over time it's 'speaker-mimicking' appeal wore off and I yearned for a more natural headphone presentation. It sounded very much like speakers, but not enough so to make me want to forgo my speaker upgrade path in the near future, and in that case I might as well have a headphone that can 'ace' the headphone soundstage aspect rather than have a headphone that can 'kind of' reproduce the soundstage of speakers.

Plus it kept on falling off of my head when I moved it, even though it was very comfy.

This Pic I snatched from some 3D Render sites maybe made in mobo or some other 3D prog.
You can see how the repetition is used to complete the imaginary spaceship where some artifical groundforce or "g's" is created by a gigantic turning spaceringship.
So to answer your question it is a gigantic spaceship I look at it as the future simcity.

Not sure but I'll make a search forU or maybe stumble Upon. Maybe here somewhere www.luxology.com/gallery/page3.aspx or here http://www.3dtotal.com/home2/gallery/gallery.asp?cat=sci-fi?

Notes I have finshed the work on my latest Image called “THE RETURN TO ABALAKIN”

Almost 2 years ago i made my first greater CG Image for a space challenge and I managed it to win the first price with my image THE BROKEN ARMISTICE OVER ABALAKIN. This is the official sequel to my first work were I want to show how this habitat ring surrounding the Planet could look like.

Thanks :) I should have been more clear: can I have a link? :D I kinda figured it was a spaceship/space station with the rotating inhabitable sector to create artificial gravity via centrifugal force.

EDIT: Thanks! Awesome image :)

Reproduced ET logo and printed on transferpaper with a simple but good colorproducing Epson Stylus C64 with DuraBrite Ink (Not necessary).

Ironed the transfer on a 15 year old 100% cotton nice Army look Jacket.

If you have ever auditioned a set of Sonus faber speakers, you would understand passion they invoke,

I had two sets of STAX in the past (Sigma and Lambda). My main headphones are Grado 325.
