What's the fastest Intel CPU I can get for this motherboard?

I'm running a core 2 duo 1.86 Ghz with a 7600GT GPU.

What do you guys think if I upgrade the GPU to a 8800GT with the fastest CPU this old board can take? Will it be enough to power most modern games?

If money is tight, I would OC your CPU. C2D's overclock pretty easily and get a video card. Newegg has a shellshocker today 9600GT for $59.99 or go for an ATI 4830.

This board is not good at overclocking I read.. It does have a built-in overclocking in the bios but it overclocks my NIC as well. It wont respond after 2.0 Ghz.

Do you know the best CPU I can get for this board? It doesn't accept quads.

And thanks for the GPU link ;)

Doesn't look like it takes the 45nm CPU's, but everything else seems to work.

Its going be the Core 2 Duo E6600 + 8800 GT upgrade.. I read the 8800 series is better than 9600..

This should cost me around $250

I may not be able though... I cant update the bios to except the newer processors. I've been at it all day.. making boot disks, Ez flash etc. It just wont work :(

The E6600 was released at the same time as your current E6300, so it should work fine without a BIOS flash.

Yep, I just checked my Bios..its 0501

The link Tiberius provide says I needed a bios 0115 or higher :D

If you knew how many iso programs and bios utilities I downloaded today you would laugh. Thank God I didn't brick my PC in the process

I would go through the FS/FT threads here. You'll find a good deal on a used C2D and a video card. I bought my CPU that's on my signature here.

Okay, I will.

Hey, would a 2.0 graphics card be affected alot by a x16 PCI express slot?

In that price range, I usually get the Thermaltake Purepower 500W. I tried an HEC X-power last time around (650W) and it's running my current system well. I haven't added the quad core yet, so we'll see :).

I found out my generic atx-550 power supply doesn't have enough amps to run my new upgrades.

What's a good power supply below $50?

Bad, and bad. Both the Purepower line and hec's PSUs range from mediocre to terrible.

QFT in all regards.

Also, OP, I recommend getting the HD4830. It's on par with, if not faster than, the 8800GT/9800GT cards. It could be found for as low as $90:
SAPPHIRE 100265L Radeon HD 4830 512MB PCI-E Video Card - $90

Also try not pay more than $100 for the E6600.

I'm just saying what I've used in the past for under $50. Usually, the better PSU's that will run a decent system are in the $75 range.

That doesn't change the fact that those PSUs are crap. No offense, but it's simply a bad suggestion, especially when there are cheap quality PSUs that can be found in that price bracket, such as the ones I listed.

Sorry to suggest something other than a Seasonic variant .

I'd want a little more than 400W personally (granted not all wattage ratings mean the same). I've used the Seasonic PSU's and they are great, but they cost more unless you get a MIR or something like that (Newegg Shellshocker was the 400W Corsair a couple weeks ago...IIRC). If you're going to spend $60, you might as well pony up for the 650W version for the extra $20 and have more room for future upgrade (video card).

A 400W PSU is still plenty for the OP's system with an 8800GT, and it would be a much better choice than an inferior higher-wattage PSU since those higher-wattage PSUs wouldn't be able to provide more power cleanly anyway. And whether or not Seasonic makes a PSU is largely irrelevant to me if the PSU is good quality. For example, the Antec Earthwatts 430W PSU that was one of my suggestions is manufactured by Delta, not Seasonic, but is still a quality PSU.

Don't get offended because I criticized your suggestion. The PSUs you recommended are not good quality, and I pointed that out. There is absolutely no reason to purchase an inferior PSU when a quality one can be bought for a comparable price.

Fair enough.

My p5l-vm would do 300fsb all day long with my e6400, and would do maximum of 318fsb before I lost the nic. A e6600 or E6700 are your best processors.

hmmm, ATI's 4850 are going for around $100 on ebay. 4850 would be on par with 9800GT?

I'm going to get the E6700. I want to squeeze every last drop of performance out of this board!

The HD4850 is roughly 10 to 15% faster than the 9800GT/8800GT/HD4830 cards.

Stil try not to pay more than $100 for the E6700.

I read doing the bios overclock on these motherboards would overclock the whole board! This is why we will lose the nic, sound etc after a while.

I read good things about Antec. What are other good brands? I'm going to take the names you suggest and try eBay for at least a 600w.

Other good brands are Corsair, PC Power and Cooling, Seasonic, BFG (LS, MX, and ES lines), Enermax, Silverstone (most of them), and a bunch more that I can't remember off the top of my head at the moment.

If you want something for under or around $50, I still suggest you pick one of the three that I linked to earlier. If you're willing to go higher, post a budget and I'll give you some recommendations.

I found quite a few 'new' power supplies 550w and up for $50.. even lower from the brands you mention on ebay. This is great. :) Some of those go for $100 at retail.

Post some links and I'll take a look at them. You want to be very careful when purchasing PSUs from places like eBay where their condition is not guaranteed.

Although if you can get a NIB and get in on the cashback, you can get a very good deal from ebay.

That's the only one that caught my eye personally, but then again, I'm no expert ;).

Here's another one. Corsair was under the "other" manufacturers with the no name brands.

BFG. Not sure how their GS line is, but their warranty is usually very good and is based on the US.

I used one of those. Seemed to work well, although I've heard varying things about fluctuating rails. Never gave me a problem.

The vast majority are crap, but these are the good ones that I found on the first three pages (there are far too many PSUs for me to go through all of them):

The GS line is mediocre. I wouldn't recommend it.
