Official BenQ FP241VW (not FP241W) Thread. Reviews and Pics

This is what I was talking about in terms of the PS3 overscanning slightly. Hard to tell if the monitor is at fault, or if it's the PS3 entirely. When I switched the PS3 to 720p, I got the same result with this image, but other interface elements wern't overscanned at all (more about that in the review).


Here's a shot of Tekken 5: DR. This game is probably the best looking thing on the PS3 at 1080p. When you see the comparison shots of VF5, you'll know what I'm talking about (which makes me hope that Tekken 6 is 1080p instead of 720p like VF5).


Blu-Ray version of the film Lord of War. There's a ton of detail in this shot, and all of it shows up pretty damn clear. However, because of the above overscan thing, I don't know if it's supposed to be sharper or not.
 
Can you take a picture of the Stand? I have a laptop and I wondered if there is space to set it underneath the display.

If you don't mind me asking, how much did you pay for yours?
 
Do we know what panel is used? Someone recently posted a review on NCIX criticizing it for using a Samsung panel as initially reported in the Behardware preview of the FP241WZ, but denied by BenQ. I don't know if the reviewer knows what's going on with this monitor or not, but some confirmation at this point would be nice.

Working on it as we speak. Ran into a snag earlier in the week. My place of work is going out of business and my college just rejected my application letter to a sub-school within it...that, and I also got hit with a large credit card bill :(

No worries tho, I'll keep working on the review.
 
THe desk is from Ikea and they still sell this exact model. Under 200$ (I think around 130$cad)
I am wondering when there will be some offical reviews for this 24"

Both HDMI and Component support all resolutions up to 1080p. However, it seems like all 1080p signals suffer from the same black border issue found on the W and WZ models when set to 1:1. I'm still trying to figure out what causes this, and I have a feeling that the monitor isn't capable decoding a 1080p signal properly. My theory is that it takes a 1080p signal and decodes it as 1680x1050 (or another like resolution), then re-displays it.

I just hope I'm wrong.

It can take a 1080p signal in 1:1 on certain inputs, other inputs you have to use the aspect feature which does give you a 1:1 picture.
 
can anyone please clarify the 1:1 functionality? it works? not on all ports? some of you are leaving piecemeal info and it's not very clear what works/how it works.

I am surprised BenQ has not sent out units for review ! And I wish it was available in black,instead of silver/black.
 
If this clearly has aspect ratio and 1:1 ratios, I would jump on the FP241VW over the FP241W/Z.

I've been meaning to get a larger LCD to watch HDTV on my computer and to hook up my xbox 360 to.
 
I am in the market for this panel. So get cracking with some more details. I don't care how busy you are, we all are! It takes just a few minutes to type up some info that we do not have. That is the sole purpose of this thread.

If we wait any longer, they will cost $299.99 and there won't be any left! Otherwise I suspect you just ordered one, took a picture and shipped it back. Prove me wrong. Quickly!

Here's the ultra-short quick run-down review.

From my tests, this thing is downright amazing as a PC monitor when using the proper cables (DVI) and calibration tools (despite my Spyder2Pro Upgrade not working, the Express worked fine). The response time is good, though I can't help but feel that my old Dell 2001FP had the same timings as this new monitor (certain games, such as World of Warcraft and URU Live had some fairly noticeable ghosting).

Using this monitor for your Playstation 3...well...here's our first problem. While a decent 1080p screen, and a good scaling chip to boot (720p images looked decent to say the least), the displaying of 1080p content is flawed due to slight overscan. I tested the web browser at both 720p and 1080p to make sure it wasn't just the PS3, and sure enough, there was a 2-3% overscan on all sides. Supposedly, BenQ has privately announced a firmware update for all their FP241 series monitors.

Gaming-wise, everything seemed to look normal. Resistance ran pretty well, though the game's internal contrast could use some tweaking, but Virtua Fighter really needs to have the damn blur/smoothing filter turned off (option menu be damned, since there is a selection between "Smooth" and "Sharp"). VF was probably the worst in appearance. Strangely enough, 2 year old Tekken 5 looked amazing, and with BFI on, it really brought out the vibrance and speed of the images. (A note on BFI later)

Blu-ray...well...something didn't seem too right with the image, but for now, I chalk it up to the 1080p overscan issue.

When you get an Xbox 360 into the situation, now you can really see how the two systems stand apart. VGA produced a 1920x1200 image instead of a native 1920x1080 image, and Component 1080p looks blurry and heavily contrasted (BTW, it also suffers from the overscan issue). I played Crackdown, Rainbow Six, and even a few Xbox Arcade games, and while blurry, still seemed to maintain at least some level of detail (GoW was probably the most amazing game in terms of appearance). I hope the "Elite" or "Zephyr" corrects this. Microsoft might want to make sure their menus are formatted for 1080p images as well (Note: Don't even get me started on the "1080i is the same" bullshiat. The 360 generates a 540p image and displays it on 1080i.)

Well, to make a long story short, I'd suggest probably looking at either the FP241W or WZ models. The VW, while nice and certainly asthetically pleasing, seems to suffer from some of the same problems as it's counterparts (which, if the other FP241WZ thread is right, should be fixed soon), so spending more for it doesn't seem feesable. In truth, there isn't much difference between this panel and the WZ panel, as far as I can tell, and BFI really makes the image far darker, and requires a constant 60 FPS game or video to compensate for the flickering. Anything less, and it just becomes a hinderance.

With any luck, I should hopefully get word back from NCIX.com or BenQ about the firmware updates. I've got a extended service with them, so hopefully they can correct the problem. If not, I'll return it, and order a new one, for a cheaper price, from NewEgg.
 
Can we presume that this LCD is basically no better than the 241W? Highly odd that there are no public reviews out from the big sites.

No kidding,Benq is really dropping the ball with this model ! No reviews,nothing...
 
That audio jack on the side, its obviously an output, but is it sufficient for hooking up speakers through? What surround does it support? What I'm getting at is, if you hook things up to this monitor like HDMI, that transmits Audio, and there are no speakers on the monitor what do you do? Or even if you hook it up through component, where would you plug the 2 audio cables into?

I thought you could already do this with the WZ without stretching?

Why does all the info keep contradicting itself? Arg!
 
Does someone have the newest firmware yet? The one with the overscan setting. How does it work?
 
If it did, and was sold that way, and... it did 480i/480p correctly I would buy it instantly.

but alas, none reported it that way.
 
From the Taiwan User Manual page 24, 35 & 36, you can see the new option.

-Overscan ON/OFF

This is what they saw "Google Translate"

Slightly enlarged image input. If images of the surrounding noise interference occurs, please use this function hidden noise.
When the input source for the D-Sub when the input source for the D-Sub or DVI-D, this function could not be used.
When the input signal is color video, composite video or S-video, this function will default to "open up";
When the input signal is HDMI, this function is the default setting, "closed."

20" screen purchased in 2007 is a joke too

try the LG. it looks ugly, isnt as strongly built (none are besides the vw which I would make love with if it worked with digital tv signals)

but, it's cheaper and sold at BestBuy for easy returns

20" just is so tiny :( I want to free the universe from tiny displays.
 
Man, im really looking forward to get this monitor. http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=22218&vpn=FP241VW&manufacture=BENQ The BenQ FP241VW. 3DGameman reviewed it and it seems to be a good one. I ain't no specialist in the thing but it does look like a killer 24", doesn't it ?

Or i could always get a 24" from Dell ... I heard great things about this one as well!

I'll be mainly gaming and surfing web with it. But i might end up hooking a 360 on it. Hell, i could watch TV on it. Oh and i'll be running a SLIed 8800GTX set-up on that LCD.

Im wondering if you guys are talking about this one or the other versions ?

And what does the overscan thing means\is ?
 
Has anyone put up any color/brightness/contrast calibrations yet?

I'm having a hard time trying to start off on where to calibrate it.

If you have one, post it up, so I can at least have a base line on where I should start :)

Just to be clear, without the overscan fix, to get both a PC and PS3 (or 360 Elite) connected to this monitor and avoid overscan over HDMI, I would have to connect:
- PS3/Elite to DVI (using HMDI to DVI cable/adapter)
- PC to HMDI (using DVI to HMDI cable/adapter)

Is that right?

Also, Wii over component would still get squeezed to 3:2?
What if I trick the input like the PS3 and use component to VGA/D-Sub or component to DVI cables?
