No 5090 - Cool!

MSI is awesome man. My MSI 4090 SUPRIM X has been SOLID, a great overclocker and runs insanely cool. I also have an MSI motherboard, 0 issues. Like you, I was eVGA for over a decade, so I jumped to MSI for the 4xxx series. I'll likely go with MSI if I ever find a MSI 5090 Suprim.

MSI cards are very good cards. All the ones I have owned have given me zero issues. Still have a 1080 TI Duke in a system here.

Sounds good. Thanks for the reassurance. Switching from eVGA was a difficult move after the 3080ti, but the ASUS I had after I have no issue with. Looking forward to trying this MSI out. Since there really is no "choice" per-say as to which 5090 I could buy since as you all know they are impossible to buy and I just jump on all of them when I hear of a possible restock... my only complaint is how "gamery" the MSI looks. I have an all black box and I like everything low-key with no RGB or anything. The dragon and the LEDs just make me cringe. Thankfully I never have to look inside the case.

Of course I am not complaining at all since i honestly didn't think I would be able to get one for weeks, but if I absolutely could choose a 5090 by looks alone I would choose the FE first and then the Gigabyte Windforce...

You could always opt to turn the lights off. I had a 4070 Super MSI card and went that route.

Pricing is getting extreme too, 5090 is like 2x the price adjusted for inflation than the Quantum3d Obsidian2 X-24 was in 1998. 4090 was on par.

Alot of 5080s moving through Amazon says 500+ sold past month just for the Asus Tuf. Astral need to up its game

Ty,

does anyone even waste their time pushing the Power Limit +4% with MSI Afterburner ?

"Board power limit Target: 575.0 W Limit: 600.0 W Adj. Range: -30%, +4%"

this card is slightly overclocked compared to the FE.. and supposedly won't cook the VRAM temps...

FE = 2407 MHz

MSI Gaming Trio OC = 2482 MHz

Is that a second card or the same one? or just cat taxing?

oh it arrived.. got it. don't mind me.. MSI is solid imo. the 4090 gaming trio runs very quiet. That's about the lowest price I have seen an AIB go for rn, good stuff.

Yes I push it up +4 on the Founders. It helps in games that use heavy path tracing with frame gen because even another frame gives you some reduced latency.

That is a high score in Port Royal running benchmarks are more fun then most games today.
any risk of pushing it +4? that's the limit of the 12VHPWR @ 600 W

i'll re-run with that later

personally I wouldn't push the cable beyond 600w for significant time, but for a bench likely fine.. I think using that 4x pci-e 8pin dongle thing is the best power delivery config.. only one potential hot spot at the card 12VHPWR connection.

I don’t like the sound of that :(

It’s already tending out of its spec of 575 towards 590 while stock 100% power limit

Well at least yours is staying under 600w at 100% power limit.. Probably fine for benching etc.. but I was reading some people on reddit are undervolting to stay in the clear for their daily driving config. I think that was mainly for the FE's and these AIBs have better power circuitry.. so ymmv...

Looks like the trio does have a thermal pad between the 12VHPWR pcb connection and the back plate at least

No one knows how this will go in the long term.. It'd still pretty fresh. but the pics of thermals getting to 150c and stuff at the 12VHPWR connector.. geesh. That's a little scary.

i ran they tests back to back, not sure if that would impact the 4K score

Those are crazy numbers :D I wonder why unigine doesn't put out more benchmark software that Haven people still run that in loops and it's old as the hills.
Then again Passmark is really old too unless I'm using the wrong version.

it’s interesting historically, last generation the FE 4090 seemed to be the one to get.. amazing cooler

Before that the 3090 FE had awful memory temps that even went out of spec, plus ultra sensitivity to power supplies, https://www.techpowerup.com/forums/...tj-max-or-tjunction-max-106c-too-much.287429/

Now this 5090 generation the AIBs seemed better but outrageously expensive

I think you nailed the 5090. I skipped the 30xx's ... I guess you're right about the 4090 cooler.. with it's exhaust flow... that seems ideal for air cooled cards... the AIB's were too chicken to do the leaf blower again lol. Even nvidia was more worried about a skinny formfactor than a much superior exhaust fan cooler..

I personally made the leap from 2080ti to 4090 (with a platform change) was of the biggest upgrades felt in a while... the msi 4090 runs cool with about least power consumption of the AIB 4090s ... but is quiet looks nice ... Best video card upgrade I have done... One card. just crushes it.. Now at 1440p uws.. I like that it's RGBness is minimal lol... My corsair fans light things up enough lol.

That said.. The 5090 is def the goat now... All hail!

at least msi and asus do this?

"🅱🅴🅰🆅🅴🆁 — Today at 10:07 AM
so my card puts off an odor when running, as in a hot smelling.. not quite burning plastic or anything, but i can smell it
it's got the new-style connector with the yellow on the 12VHPWR plug and i insured it's seated snuggly, and no yellow is visible

Gramps — Today at 10:10 AM
both of my 5090s are doing that too
it's the "Factory Fresh" smell being burned off from use. and the smell will go away after a few weeks

🅱🅴🅰🆅🅴🆁 — Today at 10:13 AM
interesting, i thought that as well.. paint burning off, or the one protective film i forgot to peel off the flow through grill, etc

Gramps — Today at 10:13 AM
it's the heat pipes and fins
they are getting hot
and the fans are blowing on them. and the smell is coming from the warmed up metal
my msi and asus are putting out the same smell
if it was plastic melting, it would smell toxic"

also.. with just 100% Power Limit stock it taps 600 W ... so i'm not going to set +4%

75C... damn that's toasty. My 4090 has to be pushed hard and long to even get over 60C at 108% power... lol. Kind of why I really want the MSI 5090 SUPRIM if I can snag it, I saw it was one of the coolest running cards.

And yeah, I would not be pushing over 600W. I'm surprised the card allows that in the BIOS as that's the connector rating... if you had 2 connectors, that would be a different story.

75 C is very reasonable imho.. if it were into the 80s or 90s i'd be concerned

So the extra 4% limit must just ensure you always hit 600W then before limiting... although if you are already hitting it now, why not just max it out then? Looks like the bios will prevent more than 600W.

just hit over 600 W purely stock ...

5090 from... Amazon?
Erek,

How the hell did you get any card off Amazon? They have been absolutely impossible to order for weeks. I would even wager right now in my weeks of trying that it's next to impossible unless you are using a bot (not saying you are), but I have been on the product page and adding to card the MOMENT one goes on sale and can't get one to place.

that's just the packing box the seller used, original card came from Best Buy, but i got this 5090 for ~ $3000 USD (Tariff-based "MSRP")

So, one month after release and, it seems, a lot of you are able to buy 5090s at retail. Interesting.

Being able to drive around safely seems pretty important.
No, I meant "extra" tires and wheels. The Bronco only has 8,000 miles on it, but on the stock rims and tires. Just thought I'd dress it up for the nicer months here and keep the stock rims and tires for winter.

Oh. Well ... then do whatever your heart is calling you to do.
