Nintendo's Next Console Is Called Switch

well, at least that isn't the stupid controller that was being rumored awhile back.

It sold 101 million units, so clearly people DID want that. The hardware (and licensing) are what caused the Wii's somewhat early demise.

People bought it for the gimmick then after getting it changed their mind about it being too much effort like he said. They just wanted to sit around and play the games. There is a reason that the Kinect never took off, and honestly is probably going to be a limit of VR for awhile. People are lazy and don't want to have to move around a great deal.

I like the concept and Nintendo's first party offerings, but I think the company's still stuck - in terms of market mindset - in Japan so far, their online functionality is relatively very lacking in this area compared to the competition.

We'll see if they were able to catch up to MS and Sony in this area but this is not an easy hurdle to climb over, those companies put allot of hard work and resources into their platforms to get there and Nintendo's way behind on the game.

Third party titles are another difficulty as of late for them, and it ties into the online features thing heavily as well, add to that the common architecture between the top two platforms (x86) adding porting overhead for development outlets wanting to cater to this new niche console, and things become even more difficult.

Good luck to them though, I was a fan of their solid products - hardware reliability and first party-wise - in the past.

Yesssss

Time to bring my flat top from the 90's back, dust of my Game Boy, slam some SURGE and get Dorito fingerprints everywhere.

I'll give Nintendo full marks for innovative design, but I have a feeling it will underperform simply because it seems to be continuing the Nintendo tradition of underpowered hardware which will make it difficult to run AAA titles. I'll see when it comes out if I'm proven wrong there. I hope I am for Nintendo's sake.

I honestly don't get the hype. As expected, it's pretty much just a Tegra based tablet. It's going to bleed third party support (again), leaving it reliant on a handful of Nintendo IPs to keep it afloat.

As a 3DS replacement, fine, but then again, competing against mobile probably isn't the best strategy.

I dunno about the third party thing. Was that SKYRIM or Zelda? The mind boggles.

Casual people bought it for the Wii Sports and the motion controls gimmick in general. Its actual software sales were not particularly hot though.

Ugh, those controllers covered in sticky skincheese. Thats skin flakes and powder from cheesesnacks. >_<

Yeah but when was Nintendo ever about cutting edge graphics? It was about fun!

Sure consoles like SEGA had more powerful hardware, better graphics, more comfortable controllers that weren't a rectangle. Didn't matter! Nintendo was king.

They need to bring the fun back and "switch" it up a bit. Sorry, I know - I just gagged a bit myself.

Seems silly to me. As a handheld, it seems awful big, and expensive. I think Sony has proven that expensive, powerful portables don't sell. As a home console, I just don't see the value. I dunno if any sort of performance numbers are out there, but I'm betting it's somewhere around what the current Wii U is. That kind of performance doesn't even really compete with the consoles now, nevermind PS4 Pro and Scorpio being right around the corner. Nintendo made a point to show off third party support in their trailer, but I'm thinking it'll be short lived when Nintendo fails to once again keep up in the home console market.

At the end of the day, is having a home console and portable console hybrid really necessary? Almost every scenario shown in the trailer seems like something that would never happen. Who really wants to play split screen mario kart or 4 person basketball on a 7" screen? Who brings their game console when they are invited to go out with friends?

I think it's a fantastic DS replacement. Hopefully it supports DS carts. As a home console, I need to see specs - nothing matters beyond specs. It's a box that plays games on my tv screen - how well will it do that.

I do still wish the switch didn't exist, that my vita was more accepted, and that Nintendo decided to simply make their games for my PlayStation ecosystem. Hardware wise I already have everything I need.

What I don't have is a new Zelda and metroid game...

I can dream.

True the console itself wasn't great. But they were being killed by Sony and XBOX. They needed something. And Nintendo has always sampled gimmicks. Let us not forget the Virtual Boy which is they released now would be a gold mine.

Side note - I'd bet good money that Skin Cheese is an actual product considered for market in Japan.

No, but remember that the main problem with the PSP was the discs. If I remember right Sony even implemented a program to replace discs. They launched a new device and new technology. You don't do both. You don't go full retard.

The PSP was fun but way to fragile. I developed a couple of games for it and it sucked. And something about it was painful to use after a while. Where I can remember the game boy you could play it until your thumbs wouldn't work anymore.

The screen is a bit weird. It's too bad that the screen couldn't be a third device but I think it'd spread things too thin. A lot of people would be left saying 'ugh, what is this screen for', I'm not going to use it, etc.

I think that this is pretty close to what Nintendo has needed for a revival but not quite it.

They need to give us the option to ship in our Physical Wii U games to load it on SD Cards for this thing. It'd be a day one sale for me.
The Wii U hard drive was the worse thing to ever exist.

I think I've gotten to a point where I've outgrown Nintendo consoles. I thought the Wii was the 2nd coming of Christ but it quickly built up dust and I eventually sold it. Played a Wii U a couple times with friends and it's just boring. I guess if I want to pay a couple hundred dollars, I want more than just games like the PS4 and Xbox provide. Media, content, streaming capabilities, I probably use my PS4 more for Netflix and being able to stream media from my PC to my TV wirelessly and my PC for actual gaming.

Instead, they're offering a mixed-use device that will naturally both compromise the experience compared to other AC-locked devices and will cost more relative to the overall power of the hardware because of the included portability.

This.
Just more gimmicks. I don't see me buying this, I'll passed just like I did on the Wii U.

Reminds me of the epic failure of Microsoft trying to make an OS that works on PC's and tablets. We see how well Windows 8 went over :p

I finally just bought a 3DS (had some gift cards to use up) so I can play the next Pokémon release with my kids.
Most the 3DS games are just rehashes of games I already have on my DS lite, so I don't see buying much else.

Im 100% OK with this system. I like it.

It was Skyrim. The thing is, though, that its existence wouldn't be an indicator that third-party support will be good or even average. It's at this point an old game that has already made monstrous amounts of money and so would be low risk to port to any platform. Remember that there was excitement about Mass Effect 3 going to the WiiU as well.

I reckon most of the naysaying here can be chalked up to a generational gap. Like most Nintendo hardware this is yet another console for babygames - and god bless Nintendo for trying - but the thing will probably be more at home in the hands of 5 year old crumb crunchers in the backseats of minivans than self-important Playstation/Xbox millennials sucking doritos & dew and playing CoD.

Trouble for Nintendo is, they'll have to pry the generation or two old iPad running minecraft from the crumb crunchers' greasy little hands.

Any word about backwards compatibility with Wii-U games? Seems like it should be possible.

I have to wonder about how powerful a tablet-based system is, though.

Still, it looks cool and I kind of want it.

I just don't see it working well.

Why on earth would ANYONE aside from die hard Nintendo fans choose this if they have a modern up to date phone?

It's not like you can throw this in your pocket + your phone.

Phones have pretty much taken over the market that handhelds used to have and if this thing doesn't allow you to text/browse the net and everything a phone does I just don't really see it being that huge a hit.

Then on the console side, it's likely that they won't be able to compete in terms of power vs the ps4/xbone, and with nintendo's usual lack of third party support I just don't really understand what they are doing here.

my only gripe with ninty is 3rd party games have been shit. after the first year its only ninty and affiliated devs making games for it.

If the price is right, I'll buy one.

Love the concept and that it isn't just a watered down gaming PC.

Looks like it may even be able to replace my iPad.

Nintendo confirms third-party developers working on Switch games Here's a list of all 3rd party developers creating games for the Nintendo Switch.

You know, this is pretty much exactly the same list that they showed back then when Wii U was anounced. The same list that got me and other hardcore gamers burned. A lot of 3rd party support was promised with fancy logos and all but in the end was never delivered. Nintendos 1st party games are excellent but without 3rd party support to the console WILL stay doing nothing but collect the dust 2/3 of the time you have it.

Local had better not be the only option for multiplayer. There was no talk of online multiplayer, but FFS, this is 2016!

Nintendo has had online MP since the Wii. It's just their kid safe network that makes it unintuitive.

Looks to me like the worst of both worlds. You have a portable system so there's an emphasis on power consumption and battery life, which simply aren't an issue on a TV console. But now your portable doesn't have a standard set of controls. Game sizes are now lowest-common-denominator with cartridges which just aren't going to hit bluray capacities anytime during the life of this thing. Small screens on portables means large text, but that also means when plugged in to a TV you'll get to keep that large text instead of a more appropriate size. Two people side by side at the same time looks like a tight fit, squinting over that tiny screen. What about online play? If it doesn't have a cell radio in there, your on-the-go play is simply going to be second class to how it would be at home unless you chase after Wifi access points.

Everyone knows the next Nintendo platform would have another Mario game, another Kart game, another Zelda game... and the big exciting reveal is 5 year old Skyrim? Now, how does this stack up to the existing lineup? Gone is glasses-free 3D, gone are multiple screens, gone are pointing devices, looks like touch controls are gone too. My most accounts it looks like a step backwards in pretty much every direction from the last 10 years.

Nintendo used to innovate while having games in mind. Now they seem to just innovate to say they innovate and the game experience comes in at a distant second.

Not too sure about this. I think games will have to be based around the gimmicks otherwise it won't work. Splitting the available controls in half can pose a problem for some games, but I suppose split screen multiplayer type games will be more basic. It would be cool to play your mobile games on a big screen though if at home. Wonder if they'll sell a version without the docking station for a lower price?

I play 3DS games against people across the world in Japan, I don't think it will be a problem with this. I Just hope internet service is free like on the 3DS.

I think they kind of have no choice but to play it like this. All the AAA big name titles are going on the superior consoles. Nintendo has simply lost that market and will never get it back, and it's too late for them to play 3rd wheel in that climate now. Xbox and Playstation are simply too synonymous with "shooter, racer, action" type sims. They dont want to become Sega desperately trying to make comparable consoles that fail to reach critical mass. They know they have excellent 1st party titles that can basically keep them afloat so long as they at least do something interesting with the console. So they do just enough to make some quirky new console that still allows them to undercut the competitions price which keeps them alive. There's still a good market for people who want sub $300 systems. Nintendo is able to capture this market AND deliver quality titles to it at the same time. I think it's a decent business model.

1) Power consumption is not an issue when placed on the dock. As far as we know the console will use a custom designed scaling processor by Nvidia so the console will beef up when placed on the dock.
2) The controls are still pretty much standard placement. Triggers, bumpers, two joysticks, button pads. Now as far as the button pads, the portable system puts them on both sides so my guess is the button pad on the left becomes the D-Pad when playing on the go while at home or stationary you use the pro controller which has an actual D-Pad.
3) Cartridges can be made much faster and larger in size than a slow reading disc, also much more reliable.
4) Maybe games are designed to scale that? We don't know that yet.
5) Sharing a small screen? This just seems like nitpicking here.
6) Every Nintendo product in the last 16 years has had online play. I doubt things will change. Wifi hotspots are everywhere and phone tethering is a thing.
7) More nitpicking.

Nintendo makes unique designs that no other console maker has dared to try. And that's along with their first party titles is what makes them as successful as they are. To change that model and stick to the vanilla would be risking everything to appease an already largely captured demographic. You still see Nintendos in nearly every household with a child below the age of 10 and that's what Nintendo wants to be, the family console.

I'll echo what has already been said.

This will not have much for 3rd party titles, regardless of whatever list someone can put up saying 'these people will make games for this'. Nintendo is following a trend of making exclusive content delivery systems through unique hardware that also lacks the power of its competitors.

We know what the result is, developers put out one or two titles and walk away. When you can develop a title for 3 systems relatively easily as they are fairly similar in hardware and software, why would you spend more than minimal effort to make a title for a 4th system that is drastically different than the rest of the Eco system.

So, it will be another Nintendo games only system and having owned a Wii, 3DS and a Cube, I can say that I love nintendo games, but they are to few and far between to be worth buying a system for them, even the 3ds.

Because you can play real games (like Skyrim) on this and not just shitty mobile games?

Seriously, 99.99% of the games available on phone/tablet are microtransaction riddled shovelware.

The rest are ports of games from the early 00s.

so... they took everything I hated about the wii u (cumbersome, massive, clunky tablet/controller, weak graphics compared to ps4 xb1) and decided to double down on it. Throw in no backwards compatibility with previous wii u games.. if this thing sells for more than $300 it'll fail just like the previous gimmick nintendo consoles. It also seems as though nintendo just took the idea of Morphus X300 and made it their own.
