Nintendo's Next Console Is Called Switch

I don't entirely understand your complaint. Think about it this way, it'll be more powerful than say a PS3 or 360 but be less powerful than a PS4 and Xbox One but it will give you the option to take it with you wherever you want to go. The plus side is that you CAN use it as a home console and never take it mobile if you want to. You have a choice.

But it really isn't 'portable'. it is huge, cumbersome. They basically double-downed on the clunky tablet/controller thing from the wii u. It isn't small enough to be really that portable (can it fit in your pocket? no, so people will have to lug this around in some protective case, or backpack, which ads to more bulk) and b/c they tried to make it portable, they had to sacrifice a ton of performance. I will wait and see the reviews, but I really can't see it doing 1080p with decent framerate. They're also going to cannibalize the 3ds sales by pushing the portability angle. throw in the lack of backward compatibility, nintendo is REALLY banking on their rabid fanbase to gobble up all the mario/zelda/starfox/cart/metroid rehashes

It's for some problems, but it has some potential as well. If it comes with that regular controller it showed then it's what the Wii u should have been. Concern now is basically price and performance. I don't hate it's concept though.

Terrible idea, as I said before when this was a rumor.

As everyone has said, Nintendo needed a platform with better graphics to compete with Xbox and Playstation that others could easily develop for.

This is an overpriced DS with an HDMI cable, that will be difficult to develop for and now competes with Xbox, Playstation and phones!

Way to make things harder on yourself, Nintendo.

Speaking of which, if Samsung really wanted to make an interesting splash, next year they should release a controller casing that used the s7/edge and up version of their phones and s8 screens as the central display of a controller for handheld android games.

Samsung sells enough phones to have dedicated controller gloves. It could even have a boosted battery pack. They already have special companion hardware in the gearVR, this would be a natural way to blunt nintendo in the games department and have something that plays similar games baked into something people ALREADY purchase, a high end smartphone.

A lot of Nintendo's games don't even need high end phones either. NES, Gameboys up to advance and SNES games should run on many of the phones out there, and officially released emulation with a complete game suite should work very well with the mobile market, especially considering a lot of the phone glove controllers are D-pad only, those games were designed for D-pads.

Nintendo could simply use those to test the water in the mobile market, given the sheer number of games for those platforms, a subscription based payment system could work well here.

Single and multi-system multiplayer on a proper mobile gaming device? If they're not lying to us in that video, then I think Nintendo has a clear winner.

I know a person that is said to be working on a VR type of game for this system. Being a mobile thing, looks like the Switch is most probably going to suck in that regard.

It really feels like Nintendo phoned it in for this round. After all this time they came up with a tablet that docks with the TV? That's it?

Seems very uninspired.

If it launches with a day 1 Mario and Zelda game they got my sale. Wii U was a huge disappointment in my opinion. It took 2 years for me to get any significant use out of it and even then I have a library of maybe 4 or 5 games.
It will take another Metroid Prime to get me to buy another Nintendo console. Coincidentally, the Gamecube was the last Nintendo console I owned.

Wow so many armchair analysts here, and yet Nintendo has the biggest money warchest from gaming alone.

No, they won't go for VR because they can't think of fun games that could be VR only, and aren't the focus they want.

If you don't like Mobile then yeah Nintendo isn't for you, since this is their strongest suit and they have chosed to double down on it after losing too much living room mindshare. I don't know if this will work, but i do believe that the concept is the best bet they have. Personally i find it too bulky for most kids, and too easy to have parts getting lost or breaking out, so yeah i don't see this for kids.
For young adults on the go up to middle aged adults i have gotten good responses, that is from around 23 yo to 36 that are my usual range of friends, they don't care about hardcore CoD//AC games but they want to have fun on the go and already have either a backpack or a briefcase in which the Switch could be carried.

I have actually had to discuss and point out that the mini joy controllers and the tablet aren't really meant for multiplayer gaming and they told me that it beats not having the option at all.

Depending on the price this may sell very well, or it will be an amazing flop. Those dissing the graphics have apparently no concept of mobile, go back to the 3ds that some call out as terrible and look at actual sales and how people enjoy the games there.

Personally thinking out loud my biggest gripe is that the whole package's compatibility will make it extra hard to refresh the system. How can you offer a lite offer if it still has to fit on the dock and the controllers?... and make no mistake, a lite version could be required for a bigger attach rate since like i said, it is currently too bulky for true mobile/kids... Nintendo will have it hard.

Did you call everyone an armchair analyst and then just provide your own analysis? We will just pretend you didn't say that part for now. :p

I do agree that it has potential and will not really do much to the living room consoles. As a mobile platform it has hope, although if they aren't careful they end up looking like a restricted tablet that is akward and not capable of full entertainment (music, movies etc). Consumers are in generally uninformed so marketing has to be done correctly. What I feel could screw them up is if they launch a new 3ds (or equiv) while this is still in its prime life.

I don't know why some keep calling the wii mote a gimmick, they are some of the best controls for shooter on the TV I have used.. Wii motes well executed make excellent pointing devices... there is nothing gimmicky about Wii motes.. the Wii is still great fun.
Calling the big N a gimmick maker is an insult to history.. Yeah I could be confused, but even if not the first they definitively introduced things that stayed forever.
The L/R buttons on the SNES.. now common place with L1, L2, and R1 R2 in most remotes.
N64's 3d thumbsitck
Vibration with N64's rumble pack
Game with save point feature.

Nintendo been a game company since 1889.
They always sold their stuff for a profit.
US business likes to talk shit about 'dumping' MS has been effectively dumping shit on the console market for years, even then Nintendo keeps wiping their butt with deeply unfavorable conditions and turning a profit.
If there is going to be an enduring video game company its going to be Nintendo.
Yeah, they target kids and what not.. of course they do, kind of like Disney does.. I have yet to hear anyone say Disney's strategy of targeting kids a flawed money making strategy.. I mean Disney being broke and all.
Besides I still have more fun with Nintendo's 'kids' game than so many others.
This console might be massive success.
I hope there is very little connectivity, maybe a storefront, and even better if I can write games purchased to empty cartriges (as opposed to just internal memory)

Darunion i dont mind the irony, heck i totally invited it, i noticed prior to sending the post but i didnt mind, we all need to be called out for the full picture.

Why does Nintendo continue to hold onto the belief that they owe the world a gaming console every few years? This silly idea confirms that they know their future is in mobile gaming but refuse to develop for iOS/Android for some reason.
You can't really sell a phone game for more than $10. The app store has established a consumer sentiment of what mobile apps should cost. Nintendo is not interested in selling their games for $10.

Some more details came out:
One day later, additional Nintendo Switch details dribble out

"The dock is not the main console unit of Nintendo Switch": Nintendo confirmed to IGN that "the main unit of Nintendo Switch is the unit that has the LCD screen." The dock's main functions are TV output and power/charging, Nintendo said, which suggests the dock won't actually have much in the way of additional hardware to enable higher-fidelity play on an HDTV.

There goes my dream of being able to snap into a more powerful dock down the road to increase performance. Hoping for at least some way to connect an external hdd to the dock.

I wonder if they'll sell separate docks to easier switch between screens at home.

Like i said, it is just a regular SoC with a Performance and Energy Saving mode. At most i think that the dock could help with active cooling depending on the design, other than that it really made no sense form an economic stand point and from a technological one, it would be a PITA to have to add paths in your game code for SLI with one of the two cards being variable and all that.

Still i wonder how are they gonna scale the hardware down the line while keeping peripherals compatible.

Agreed. This unit is less portable than a 3DS, and underpowered as a home console (compared to the Xbox 1 & PS4. I don't see the market for it

At least with the DS/3DS, they fold up like a laptop which makes them smaller and protects the screens.
The 2DS was a bad design and not much cheaper than the 3ds at the time it was released.

I wish Microsoft would buy Nintendo and release all the Nintendo games on Windows Tablets, the PC & the Xbox.
It would boost the sales of Windows tablets, and possibly even Windows phones.
Plus it would easily make the Xbox the number one console.

Do you know how VR works? Motion plus doesn't mean they can do tracking. Motion plus is six-axis motion detection which is exactly what phones already do. At the VERY least, they would need to add a headset (that is, a head mounted display with a decent resolution to prevent the screendoor effectm at minimum one screen split into two) ONE infrared sensor to track the headset/body movements (the cheap Wii bar sensor will not suffice for this), AND (this one is huge) an additional CPU/GPU box to process all of this. And, if you've kept up with the [H] VR articles, it has to run these at 90fps.

Under $200? Not in the next couple of years and not at all as an add-on to a Tegra SoC. I'm sorry but Nintendo isn't god. They have great IPs but you shouldn't let that could your judgement this badly.

Yes, I do know how VR works. I have used a DK 2.0 kit back when that was fresh.

Nintendo doesn't have to make a room scale experience. It can make a fully seated affair. As the videos show, it seems the IR sensor is built into the tablet and the hub itself. Thus, mild tracking can happen. Nintendo can release a cheap hub device that is used in conjunction of the tablet and create a VR solution. If this means, additional hardware for tracking, that's fine. The heavy cost still won't be felt because the heavy cost is in the display that the user already has.

Again, it doesn't have to be the best, it just has to work. VR is an expensive, expensive endeavor for consumers. Any kind of entry that offers a taste of the future is good enough. Also, I don't think there's a dev out there that can match Nintendo's creativity when it comes to software. VR needs all the help it can get when it comes to proving itself.

That boy ain't right.

I think my young children would love this. If it has good battery life (like 6-8 hours) when just doing normal media consumption it could go against the iPad, and iPads are not cheap and lots of kids have them.

It won't sell as well as the Wii did and when that came out I thought it was stupid. The Switch looks pretty cool to me, the size isn't an issue, no worse that taking along a tablet or laptop. This will defiantly be going along on trips to the beach. Kids can play mario kart or smash bros or whatever during the drive and we can hook it up to the TV when we get there.

Then when I and the wife want to watch TV the kids can take it to their room and play. My problem is going to be not having to get two of them.

It would be nice if they had something more than a "Just kinda look at the thing in all of these staged, we're having fun kinda situations" video for the announcement. Specs. Price range if not price point. Other information. However, it seems very much in line with what the rumors/leaks have been so far, which makes me think that the price and performance rumors are also likely to be true; that is to say, disappointing.

Its frustrating to me that overall it COULD be a decent product even what we know this far.....except for one major issue: Nintendo's likely proprietary OS and top down platform control. They are obviously targeting the "mobile/tablet gaming + dock for home play" niche and we assume the Switch is going to be $300-350+. This COULD work if A) The hardware was in line or exceeding any other mid-to-high grade gaming tablet in terms of specs and this is the big one B) it was built on latest generation Android OS at time of release and included all of its features Sure, I expect them to also add a Nintendo Store app/game store and a bunch of skins/features to give it its own spin - that's okay. However, it needs to be fully compatible with Android and that includes things like the ability to (preferably without hacks, a lockdown bootloader) install Google Play, F-Droid etc... if the user wishes (provided they tick the '3rd party app store" boxes of course), and have support for all common Android Apps. Hell, if they did this I'd be likely to buy it!

I, and many other people have little interest in a separate, proprietary Nintendo handheld quasi-console tablet. If I'm going to spend > $300, I want a tablet that will let me do "All kinds of high end tablet stuff". However, I WOULD easily buy that tablet that let me run all the normal Android stuff I wish AND play Nintendo games AND have quality controllers and hardware for when I want to game. However, the latter alone isn't worth it to me and I think to many others. If Nintendo could hopefully see reason, that most people are carrying around tablets and mobile phones with high end hardware easily capable of gaming etc... so asking us to pay a premium, buy yet another device JUST to play their games and use a controller or two, isn't worthwhile - its wasteful. If they could give up the stranglehold on the platform exclusivity, they could get people to choose a Nintendo tablet as their primary tablet/mobile gaming/docked gaming device - and that's a lot more likely to get people using it, buying apps and games. Hell, they could even go a step further and do the smart thing by selling all of the Switch peripherals a la carte and make the hardware and drivers compatible with mobile OSes and PCs (all OSes), to get people with existing hardware to still buy their controllers and whatnot. If they did this, they could also go the other direction and I'd say sell Nintendo titles either via Google Play or other app stores, or make the Nintendo Store freely downloadable and compatible with most recent Android OSes, allowing those without a Switch to still buy and play games. After this introduction, they may be interested in purchasing a Switch next time around if the hardware, build quality, and experience is worthwhile.

If they could do they above, they'd likely have a winner on their hands in a big, big way. However, I am worried that a cultural resistance to change and inability to give up proprietary console mindset thinking will have them pass up this opportunity. There are quite a few WiiU titles I would have liked to play, but I wasn't going to buy the console just to do so. Had they been available to play on the PC I already own, I would have likely bought many of them. The same thing is true for mobile and now is the time for Nintendo to realize that it isn't the 1990's anymore where affordable gaming requires custom hardware and proprietary software console platforms.

I haven't had a game console since the GameCube. But I like the looks of this one very much. Say what you will about Nintendo but they've always been innovative, for better or worse Virtual Boy, Powerglove, Trackpad, ect... If it turns out to have some good games on it I might consider buying it. I like the idea of it being portable and hope that the rumors of it being as if not more powerful than the Xbox One are true, it needs to be for more developers to jump on board.

This thing is the nvidia Shield with Nintendo branding.

I don't get it.

All of the rumors were that Nintendo was doing something big and innovative.

Nvidia Shield is like three years old.

yep, a huge letdown. About the only interesting thing is the usage of cartridges, but those look super tiny and easy to lose..
Also, the latest rumor/leak is it only has 4Gb of ram...
