Nexus-Five thread

Ok, so I'm considering buying this phone. All this talk about the battery made me look into it a bit more. I'm guessing Google is not advertising this as a replaceable battery, but I looked on ifixit and it appears to be easy enough to remove from the device. Does anyone think replacing it would be a feasible action? Is it soldered in?

Also, I've had to pull the battery on my GNex countless times due to app freezes, etc. What happens if that occurs on a non-replaceable battery device? Do I have to wait for it to drain? That would suck...

Power Button + Vol Down = Hard Reset

http://mimeusa.com/product/nexus-5-feather-glass-tempered-glass-screen-protector/

I'm going with the Mime feather. Code 12238 for free shipping. Lifetime warranty and better customer service than Spigen. They're active on xda, even offering unhappy Spigen costumers with faulty glass free protectors.

Thanks! I checked out the Spigen, Nillkin (oem Spigen apparently), and the Mime... Picked the Mime since it seems to be a better value.

I also looked at glass vs clear plastic types and it looks like the better experience is had on glass.

One other question to folks experienced in applying these (and Mime ones specifically). Any pointers to facilitate putting it on? I have limited experience with these - anything that helps me not throw money down the drain greatly appreciated.

At close to $30, I'd rather get this:

http://evolutivelabs.com/

Shatter proof!
3H hardness. That's as hard as a plastic screen protector so expect scratches. It looks like they sacrifice scratch protection for impact protection with a much thicker protector. Mime, Spigen, and others are 9H with a thinner profile. In not sure I see the point in that rhino protector when a $5 pack of the screen protectors provides just as much scratch resistance without the added width and cost.

ummm

Looks pretty scratch resistant to me.......:confused:

I was despairing that my black 16 gb order from the 7th wasn't going to make it before the stated December 3rd date, but I just checked my email and as of a bit two and a half hours ago apparently the thing just shipped, lol.

Can't wait. :)

According to their own website they rank exactly the same on the Mohs scale as cheap plastic screen protectors. The other tempered glass protectors are both thinner and much much harder. 9H vs. 3H is a big difference.

If you watch the video I link they show no scratches from keys......

And I can assure you thats the only thing my phone may ever encounter in regards to things that would scratch it.

Plus it can take a steal ball bearing hitting it.....and not shatter the screen.

I am sold...

That's half the hardness of Gorilla Glass 3...simple dirt/minerals/sand on your finger will scratch it so unless you plan on washing your hands every time you touch your phone so it will wear and scratch over time. That's fine for a $4 pack of three screen protectors but at the price they're asking that's hard for me to justify the price.

What does it not cracking do for you? It doesn't do anything to prevent the screen itself from cracking on impact.

To each their own. I don't see the point of spending that type of money on something so soft and scratch prone. Keys are usually nickel plated and have a hardness of 4. If that screen is 3H like they advertise the keys will scratch it eventually.

So a grain of sand will never fall in your pocket or be on a table you place your phone on?

The argument of 3H vs 9H is somewhat hilarious. It's like the same argument of how high SPF levels should be for sunscreen. Anything beyond 45 SPF is just silly. 30 SPF is already good enough.

If you go onto the Spigen's website, you'll find Spigen calling their 3H PET screen protector scratch proof with 100% guarantee. There is no argument from me that 9H is better than 3H.

The point of the Rhino Shield is protecting your phone from a face down drop.

Here's a video of Rhino Shield vs Spigen GLAS

Considering that Gorilla Glass 3 is between 6 and 7 what's the point of a screen protector then? The answer is that even Gorilla Glass scratches at twice the hardness so there's nothing funny about the Mohs scale. I replace 3H plastic screen protectors multiple times a year. At $1.25 each I don't complain but at almost $40 after shipping the only thing that's hilarious is the cost of those things. We'll see how they actually work in the real world rather than Rhino's own promotional stunts.

Try emailing Spigen and seeing how quickly they send you a replacement. Mine has been on my N5 for exactly a week and it's already nicked and scratched. 100% scratch proof my ass.

As far as drops, the Gizmag article you liked said it best:
"I was also curious to see if just any old thing would offer the same level of impact protection. As it turns out, two sheets of a cut-up thick Ziplock bag did."

I know I'll get some heat for this, but bring it on.

Has anyone left the factory Nexus 5 screen protector on their device? For some weird reason, I dig the "Nexus 5" letter in in the middle.

I got my Nexus 5 this past Tuesday so this is the third day I'm rocking it.

Yes, for a week until I had to RMA it (for an unrelated reason).

Last year, I left my N4 factory protector on for a month until I could decide on a screen protector.

But that "nexus 5" lettering covers up part of the screen, so I think most people would rather have it off. I'm sure you'll get over that in a matter of time after the honeymoon phase is over. I understand where you're coming from though, it does look cool and I wouldn't mind if it said "nexus 5" somewhere off the screen on the front (maybe an option to illuminate it on or off).

On my Moto X, I added a signature on the back with a customized moto x engraving since the phone is just so damn plain.

A *little* branding done in a non-over-the-top manner is not a bad thing at all...

How are the speakers on the N5? I have the original Nexus and speakers are so sad.

Adequate. I see a lot of reviews about poor sound quality but it's a cell phone speaker....who gives a damn. It's loud, that's all that matters for me. It'd be nice if the speaker were on the front like the HTC One. I really wish that was an industry standard.

Is it better than all the phones so far?

Got mine. Fantastic so far. Battery life has been really good for me the last few days. Lasts all day no problem on ATT LTE.

Speaker lacks a bit of the clarity of the iPhone 5, but it is far from crap

Pretty stoked, UPS showing mine will be delivered tomorrow. The best part for me right now is leaving Verizon. They'll probably screw me over to the end as much as they can. Wouldn't be Verizon if they didn't.

Ordered the acase 'slim superleggera pro' case for the phone, will report back on thoughts when it arrives.

My only criticism of the phone so far is that the plastic feels very soft - I don't mean that from a tactile point of view, I mean that from a durability point of view. I actually haven't been taking my phone anywhere with me if I couldn't put it in a separate bag, out of fear for the plastic. With the case on the way, it'll be back in my pocket.

Regarding battery life, coming from the GSM GNex, things have been terrific. I'm not a super heavy user by any means (I'm not sexting 1000 times a day), but I can easily get through a day without any fuss.

Small side note: I grabbed a 10k mAh external battery for use when travelling, since it was on a massive discount (costed me $20). Not specific to the Nexus 5, but those who travel a lot may want to look into this for their smartphone.

I grabbed the LG Qi charger and the Spigen Hybrid case today, will see how they work out.

I am excited about the Qi charger for my desk at work, will simplify charging throughout the day.

Can anyone comment about if the Qi charger, or any wireless based charger causes the phone to warm up just as plugging in would?

Been slightly curious about that.

I've got a spigen hybrid for my iPhone 5s and it kicks ass. I don't normally even use cases because of how bulky they are but this is easily one of my favorites so far.

Been using it caseless so far but also caved in and picked up a spigen hybrid. Only problem I have with most cases is that it covers up that oh-so-pretty back but oh well. At least the spigen ones look pretty good as well.

There are cases with clear backs (such as the Spigen Ultra Hybrid) if you want to show the back but with more protection than just a bumper.

Personally the main thing I'm afraid of with phones is cosmetic damage from abrasion/scratches so I don't use a case. With the Nexus 5 specifically the sides and camera circle.

With that being said is there anyone selling just protective film for the sides of the Nexus 5? What about the camera circle?

Nexus 5 compared to my Galaxy S4. My honest real world use opinion after a couple hours side by side with both phones.

I have had my ATT S4 for a couple months now. And my Brother just got his Nexus 5 this past week.

I dropped and broke my Nexus 4 back in September, and couldn't wait for the Nexus 5 release, so I find a killer deal at Best Buy for new S4's @ $49ea. Was bummed at first, I wouldn't be getting the new Nexus, and had to settle with just a plain Galaxy phone, but I am so happy now that I did.

Quick opinions;

- Screen; Maybe I am used to the Plasma deep blacks of my HDTV at home, but call me crazy, I actually like AMOLED, and love my S4 screen, the reds and blues just pop, and blacks are deep, and viewing angles are great. Where as the Nexus 5 looks washed out, with terrible viewing angles, just like my Nexus 4. I guess the bright whites on the N5 look better, that's about it.

- Performance; I know the benchmarks tell the story, the Snapdragon 800 blows the S4 out of the water. But in real world performance, using both phones side by side for two hours, I could barely tell a difference in speed, just messing around with the phone. But we both have Nova launcher installed, with same settings. I guess the N5 was a hair snappier, but honestly so hard to tell much of a real world difference.

- Battery life; My brother had the phone for maybe 5 days at that point, and he said battery life was ok. He said heavy use would drain the battery down pretty quick, but that standby time was excellent. He said on average was getting like 3.5h to 4h On Screen time. On my S4 I get 5.5h to 6h On Screen time, and my phone with extreme heavy nonstop use lasts 14 to 16 hours, and on light days goes 24+ hours easily. My S4 I know gets better battery life.

- Haptic Feedback; For some reason, I never really liked the haptic feel on my Nexus 4, it felt strange compared to other phones I owned. Same feel with the N5, just a weird vibration or cheep rattle feel. My S4 feels more solid when vibrating or using haptic feedback.

- Build Quality; I know the Galaxy S4 is no Lexus, it's still all plastic, but even my Brother commented that the feel of my S4 felt more premium than his N5. He said the volume and power button on my S4 felt solid, and more machined accurately, with a better pressing feel. He said his N5 buttons felt very cheap.

- Bottom line; My Brother is coming from a Galaxy Nexus, and he said to quote "Going from the EVO 4G to Galaxy Nexus felt like a night and day massive upgrade, but going from the Galaxy Nexus to the Nexus 5 now, doesn't feel nearly as a big an upgrade" He likes the Nexus 5, but said it just doesn't totally wow him, or blow him away. He said the N5 is cool, he'll keep it, mainly due to the price, and he would never spend over $350 for an off contract phone anyways, so no way would he spend $650 on a flagship phone out of contract. He's on Straight Talk ATT with the N5 by the way.

- Vanilla Android vs TW; I am a big stock Nexus fan, I like pure Android the best. But on my S4, I am running Nova + Kit Kat icon pack, plus Wanam Xposed Framework, and several other rooted tweaks, so my phone doesn't even really look a TW device anymore. I really couldn't tell a massive difference OS wise between both phones.

IMO, I am happy with my Galaxy S4, and I am a big Nexus guy. After playing with my brother's N5, I wouldn't even do an even-Stephen trade for a brand new Nexus 5 over my two month old S4. I like my screen better, I have better battery life, plus i have gotten pretty used to the bottom middle button to press and turn the screen on, I really like that.

Oh well, this is just my opinion. I think the phone for me in 2014, will be a Galaxy S5 Google Play Edition, if they make one.

Neither my LG nor my Nokia chargers cause my phone to warm up very hot.

i can also confirm that my nexus 5 doesn't warm up with wireless charger

Good comments, I would say on one thing though...the screen...the viewing angles are far from terrible on the N5. They are better than a lot of screens out there. Just so people dont get the wrong idea ;)

My Nexus 4 had terrible viewing angles, looking at the N4 from the side, or tilted up or down, made screen look yellow, and hard to see. And my Brothers Nexus 5 was very similar in that regard.

My Nexus 5 has horrific viewing angles as well. I prefer the Samoled screens to anything else on the market.

only problem with amoled is that you can't see shit when you have sunglasses on outdoor

That's the trade off.

AMOLED screens suck balks outdoors on sunny days. Where IPS screens are meant for outdoor use.But inside is a different story, I much prefer AMOLED indoors.
