Well it's getting close to that time of year, the biggest and most important phone releases are in the Fall. Always a next gen iPhone and next gen Nexus phone and new Android OS, and next gen Note phablet.

The Nexus-Five is heavily rumored to be based off the LG G2 phone, and running Android 5.0, will be released in Oct / Nov.

The device is reportedly going to be launched in early October and will come with a new version of Android on board – Android 5 Key Lime Pie. Moreover, Daum specifies that the name of the smartphone co-developed by Google and LG will be Nexus 5, built off the same platform as the LG G2 smartphone.


From AC - Rumors of people discussing the new LG G2 smartphone, and people asking if there will be a "Google Play Edition" ? yeah, the Google version is going to be called the Nexus 5.

Don't believe the immediately refuted story that LG is not producing this year's Nexus. All year long, LG sources have leaked to South Korean newspaper Daum developments. In May, when Google CEO Larry Page visited South Korea, LG CEO showed him prototype of Nexus 5. More recently, specs to G2 leaked along with confirmation of G2/Nexus 5 co-developement.

Would be shocked if it didn't. All the rumors have been saying the Nexus 5 will be a modified LG G2 phone, just like last year the Nexus 4 was a modified LG G1.

Rumors for the Nexus-Five from LG are; Snapdragon 800, 3GB RAM, 3,000mAh battery, 5" 1080p LCD screen.

Maybe get more leaks or rumors of the N5 at the LG G2 launch event tomorrow ;)

And 8GBs of storage, lol.

Seriously, I hate that about the Nexus phones and it's getting old. Even if they have to gouge us another $50 for another 16GBs of storage for a 32 GB phone, that's fine! We're all going to be using their storage services anyway (or a competitor's even), so it makes no sense to restrict us to so little internal storage, esp. when the cost of it is so little.

Somehow I doubt it will be that high-end though. Esp. the battery size. Isn't the G2 supposed to have expandable storage? I'm sure Google will seal a smaller battery into the phone along with its internal storage. Not like it matters to me anyways though, I'm on Verizon. :mad:
 
first day buy for me, still clinging to my lovely GNEX till then
 
I see the Nexus 5 following exactly like the Nexus 4 went last year, meaning;

- $399 price sold on the Play Store
- Based off LG's current flagship G2 phone ( like the N4 was based off the G1 )
- Nexus 7 tablet last year was $219, and the brand new next gen Nexus 7 this year is again the same price $219, but has all new better hardware, bigger battery, 1080p screen. The N4 was $349, and the N5 will be $349 again or close.

Now, for that affordable price, there is always some features lacking on the Nexus device, what will that be ? Small storage ? No LTE again ? Fixed battery ?
 
FYI...based on the naming convention used with the N7, I doubt this will be called the nexus 5

The N7 is called that for the 7" screen, both tablets had same size 7" screen. The Nexus 4 was named that for being the 4th generation Nexus phone, so this new Snapdragon 800 Nexus phone, will be the 5th gen version, I would think a name like Nexus-Five or N5 ?

I sure hope it could come with 32 GB as the base model... but it's Google... so it won't happen...
 
As long as the removable battery from the G2 stays I think I'm in. Prefer phablet or even tablet sized screens but the money savings to be had is ridiculous. It's funny because if the current incarnation of the nexus program wasn't around I'd probably be none the wiser and get flagships simply because midrange in the USA is terribly priced.
 
My Gnex power button stopped working yesterday and I'm looking at a new phone (I hope it's just some ink from work stuck under the button). I'm debating shelling out for the S4 Play Edition so I can get that amazing screen and LTE but the price sucks. The N4 has a better price but worse build quality, worse screen, and the HSPA+ speeds on ATT suck balls.

If LG makes the Nexus 5 I'm staying far far away from it. I've read that people hear a pop from their phone sitting on the desk and the back cracked on its own. I hope Samsung gets another shot at the Nexus because LG failed in a big way IMO. Nothing about that phone is spectacular.

I think they will have figured out the LTE problem this time since the new N7 can be used on all carrier's (except Sprint's) LTE networks. I would hope they would be able to put that same chip in the next Nexus phone, which would be awesome for Verizon users if VoLTE is working by the end of the year (which I think Verizon initially said that, but it got pushed back to next year). But then again, I'm sure Verizon will figure out some way to keep unlocked phones off their network.

Yeah, it wouldn't make much sense to keep with this generational naming scheme if they keep the N7 name the same for ever generation, then in two years, the'll have two different Nexus 7 devices, lol. I can't think of a good alternative name for it at the moment though, so maybe it will still be a Nexus 5, but I'm sure they will change the naming scheme for future generations.
 
If it does end up being based on the G2 the display size will end up being 5.2 inches to tie in with a Nexus 5 name.

As for the S800 I've always been somewhat confused why people think it is a huge stretch to be included. The S600 was basically the SoC for the spring release of phones while the S800 is for the fall release phones. Basically every high end device in the fall will use the S800 and even spring release devices have been refreshed to incorporate the S800 (like the Galaxy S4 in certain markets, HTC One is rumored to being updated with a S800). You saw this last year as well, the fall release devices had better SoC then the spring devices like the Galaxy S3. The actual cost difference is quite low, PC CPU cost differences shouldn't be used as a reference point.

I think the G1 had a different sized screen than the Nexus 4 last year ? They shared the same basic hardware and screen technology, but not 100% exact carbon copies of each other, there were slight differences.

I also think the Nexus 5 and G2 will have the same internal hardware, but the screen amd shape / size of the phones will be different.

As far as the Snapdragon 800, yes you are absolutely correct, the S800 is the new standard for all new Android phones the rest of the year. The G2, Note 3, Sony, Nexus 5, and HTC One+ will all have the Snapdragon 800, and 3GB RAM, and large batteries of 2600mAh - 3000mAh. That is the new norm this Fall / Winter.
 
Am I missing something here? The last I heard LG denied any Nexus 5 involvement.
 
As far as the GPU, Does the Snapdragon 800 have to have the Adreno 330 GPU?

Same 4.7 inch screen size. The difference was the Optimus G had capacitive hardware keys while the Nexus 4 had softkeys. So the display is bigger in the sense you always have the full usable screen. This is also why the Nexus 4 is not a really good example of softkey implementation since all they did was remove hardware keys.

The G2 though seems to use softkeys so the front face could be very similar if it does use that design. We'll see for sure maybe tomorrow but I recall the G2 might actually be the same or smaller in dimensions then the Galaxy S4 but with a slightly larger 5.2inch display by taking advantage of space savings via softkeys and moving the side buttons to the back.

I think the main cut down features with the N4 were -

USB OTG - The Nexus 4 cannot supply the voltage necessary which is why an external power source is needed for the work aorunds.
Camera - The Nexus 4 did not have the 13MP variant camera. Also the housing is different which may have an affect on the picture quality. The N4 camera is covered by the same one piece glass over the entire back but the G is a separate module (with its own cover) like you see with most phones as well as the LED flash on the N4.

Capacitive hardware keys - replaced with softkeys
Official LTE support - There is hardware present for certain bands but it isn't officially certified so it isn't officially supported.
I don't believe the G has the same heat/throttling issues as the N4 either.
 
S600 has the 320, the s800 has the 330.

The 330 is supposed to be 50% faster, in what we dont know yet. This may be our first legit smartphone with the S800.
 
Leave it up tp zorachus to renew my interest in a phone.

It's essentially this or note 3 for me.

Moto X will be a future buy later down the rode.
 
And the biggest deal coming with this Nexus-Five is of course the brand new Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie, and all that brings, being a whole point release. Should be pretty amazing update.
 
I hope LG gets it again, I'm a huge fan of my Nexus 4, and even though i'll probably stick with it until next year, if there is a 32/64 GB option for the next Nexus phone, I'll be mighty tempted....
 
Google is on the two year plan with the same manufacture for the Nexus line;

- Samsung = Two years in a row with Nexus-S then Galaxy Nexus
- Asus = Two years in a row with both Nexus 7 tablets ( The third Nexus 7 tablet in 2014 rumored to be different company next year )
- LG = Two years in a row, Nexus 4 and the upcoming Nexus-Five.

One crazy recent rumor, is that in 2014 LG and Asus will switch Nexus devices. The third Nexus 7 tablet will be made by LG, and the Nexus 6 phone will be made by Asus.
 
This probably is a stupid question, but do you think we will see a CDMA radio in the Nexus 5?

I highly doubt we'll see the Nexus-Five on Verizon or Sprint. The Nexus line isn't CDMA friendly :)

Yeah, highly unlikely. The best we can hope for is that it will be compatible with Verizon's LTE network like the Nexus 7 is and maybe we can use VoLTE on Verizon once they implement it early next year.

This is what I don't understand. Why does the Nexus 7 get a Verizon version but the Nexus phones don't?

Something like this is perfect for someone who wants to keep their unlimited data, but I'm guessing that's part of Verizon's point of not allowing it.

Maybe I should just keep my Galaxy Nexus + Unlimited Data forever, and just buy a Nexus 7 or next gen iPad Mini to have newer hardware on the side.

Do the Google Play Editions of the S4 and One offer a Verizon version, or are they GSM only ?

I suppose we could maybe possibly see a Verizon Nexus-Five this Fall, if like you say, they make a specific Nexus 7 just for Verizon now ?

GSM only unfortunately. Even then, I'm thinking <$400 for a phone here off contract, which puts me in Nexus 4/5 or year old used Galaxy S/Note territory.

Just need to wait till October see what Google's detailed plans for the Nexus-Five are, most likely this is what to expect;

- Hardware and screen technology same as from the new LG G2.
- Running Android 5.0
- Released this Oct. / Nov.
- GSM carrier compatibility #1,doubtful for CDMA carriers.
- Aggressive pricing from Google on the Play Store, most likely $400 off contract.

Thanks for the info. I think I should start thinking about moving back to AT&T or T-Mobile, simply for ease of GSM capability.

There is no Verizon specific version of the Nexus 7 either though, it's just one model with LTE that happens to include their 700MHz band (presumably with their permission). I would not expect CDMA at all even of they do this again with the phone.
