Network pics thread

Albeit a couple of months ago now, The Gathering 2011 was awesome with Altibox and Cisco delivering us 100Gbit/s internet!

Awesome stuff man .. I'm waiting for the CFP linecards on the ASR 9K and Nexus 7K. Those CFPs look bigger than the ones on the Cisco powerpoint slides, especially when you put them next to an SFP haha.

Can I ask you something.. does this Exfo FTB-500 support looking at a piece of DWDM fiber -- 44 channels @ 100GHz spacing? I need a good test device that will allow me to look at any one of those individual signals.

Just got these free goodies today :)

Well actually, the g5 dual 2.4 6 gigs ram & 3 120gig sata drives with os dvd's was a bargin, had to buy a friend a cheese berger :) SCORE!! he had a few that were collecting dust and wasting space :) Now i have 2 g5 servers, one is brand new with out proc's & ram & drives. Will be a spare machine for parts.

The G5 pictured below has fiber card too :)

The G4, well it's garbage. WAY to loud to run and meh!

Free sonic walls today :)

I wonder if the G5 proc's from my old dual G5 1.8 tower would work in that Xserve.

With this card it'll see all the way down to 50GHz spacing. We tested one out a while back for our CWDM network and it was probably the nicest of the bunch but the bean counters didn't want to pay the money for it.

The Gathering always has some serious network pr0n going on - always excited to see pictures of it.

Heres some more... this client has 2 DVR systems, and they had them in a back closet originally but we convinced them to have us build new rack mount systems and rack-mount them to a cabinet on the wall in top corner of office.

This picture is missing the 2nd DVR and the 2nd storage array. Pictured is a 16 channel system with a 10 drive array. I installed another 32 channel system with a 20-drive array in the blank spots. The rack pivots open (middle atlantic rack)

Hi there.

Is there something like The Gathering in the states? Did I read somewhere that Altibox provided the fiber connections gratis?

a couple of gigabit switches for our upcoming BF3 Launch Party

The Gathering always has impressive network pr0n, I couldn't imagine having 100Gb Internet! We are stuck with 6Mb down/2 up if we were literally 1.5 miles closer to town, we could get 107down/10up. Unfortunately Sudden link thinks they shouldn't extend their connections that far...

Unfortunately I have no idea. It was our ISPs equipment. I am a routing/switching/wireless guy, not a metro/fibre guy ;)
sounds like you know your ISP well.. you should get into this stuff. We need more network engineers that know both out there... :)

Thanks for the info.. we'll look into this.

Talk about a crappy situation. Coming home to that is my worse worse nightmare other than fire trucks and a pile of rubble. I think I would call it quits, and switch profession. Maybe plumbing or something LOL. Then again that's why I have offsite backups. At least the data would be safe, it would just take me like a year or two to save up to replace everything. I doubt insurance covers server racks of equipment. And wow, those fans really have thrust to them to move that water around like that.

This is why I keep the UPSes on the ground. They are easy to replace, don't cost that much compared to other equipment, and they'd short out and die cutting power to the rest before the water gets any higher, so there would be a slight glimpse of hope of the rest being safe even if it's submerged. It also reminds me the importance of installing a backflow prevention valve. One of my many todo projects around the house.

Most companies actually do get insurance coverage at least for servers themselves, I don't know if they would cover networking gear, but servers can be more expensive than server gear. All depends what you're doing and how.

Here is a picture of my small rack, which includes my cisco 350N router, my 3com 24port gigabit switch, furman power conditioner, deltavision video multiplexor for my security cameras, and my dvr/file server

Highlander200268,

Lookin good, looks like you got a g4 xserve, a wee bit noisy those are :)

This thread almost makes me want to post the nightmare I have to deal with.

Even after multiple complaints to management about wanting to redo it I still get told no.

i would just grab some ends and start redoing it one cable at a time, i would go nuts seeing that crap.

or if something goes wrong, just take daysss to fix it and claim that is why.

If you mean loud as in a 747 taking off, then yeah it's loud, lol i dont see how people in a server room full of these stand it, i would go def

problem with the xserve is the form factor is so long it wont fit in my rack right , my rack has a little bit of an angle to it and this thing is to big and heavy for it

Yea once I am done retracing them all I am going to start doing one by one.

Need to think of the best way to make the wires as neat as possible.
