My Far Cry 2 Quick Thoughts, AWESOME

yup; after running a search it looks like AVG being a bit over zelous, (it's happened to be before on other games, I believe Assissins Creed also did it.)
Yeah, read previous posts. I don't know how this affects game, but I'm thinking of reinstall.

Whenever the game hits a checkpoint or I quick load, I get terrible terrible lag and framerate drops into the teens.

In other news.

My avg fps is hovering in the mid-40's with 4x AA, everything on very high, @ 1920 x 1200.

Still having sound issues, I'm thinking of just switching to stereo in creative drivers and seeing if that helps. Gunfire sounds weak and voices are muffled.

Have you tried the recently released beta X-fi drivers, this may resolve your sound issues.

Nice screens!

I hope my local Gamestop gets my copy in today. I hope nothing stupid like the copies for my store getting there's diverted to another store happened.

I just done a mission where i had to kill a guy in the ceasefire zone, i find him taking a leak with nobody around and kill him quietly with the machete. Soon as i kill him everyone in the village knows 2 things:

1. Someones just been killed behind that there little hut.

2. We know exactly who did it despite there being a large amount of people in the village.

Also the random sentry posts shooting you up for no reason is quite annoying.

No Prone
No Lean
No Stealth

Is it me or when I'm watching the cameras while waiting to spawn, the game just doesn't look as cool as COD4?

Hopefully prone/lean will find its way into the game via a patch, but I'm not gonna hold my breath.

Seems a fairly even spread of people that love the game and those that think it blows.

I'll reserve judgement until I've played some more and stopped tinkering with the graphics settings. I swear I'm obsessed with getting the game running smoothly before anything else.

just did that mission myself, same exact way. im thinking maybe if you used the silence pistol available from the weaponshop it would have a better outcome?

i dont think this game is fully GPU dependent, since on my specs with the hot fix, i can play Far Cry 2 at Ultra High 4x AA 1280x1024 V SYNC'D at 30 frames. Even at those frames it looks very nice. But one thing i noticed is that it barely taxes the 4870 x2. My GPU usage in game usually idles around 45% no matter waht im doing, rarely going over 50%. While my processor cores are usually in the 90's and my RAM is around 1550 mb usage. So basically, my other parts are bottlenecking my GPU haha.

i7 is needed then :p

Not to derail the thread, but is it possible there is someone perhaps in a tower or on a roof or looking from some obscure angle that might be triggering the alert? I know that they designed the title so that you can stealthily kill people, so I don't see how that could happen...but perhaps having it happen at all in a cease fire automatically triggers everyone.

I'm glad to see that other people have the same mouse issue (i.e. it ain't just me), so hopefully we'll find a solution in the next few days. It's irritating enough that I think I'm going to shelve the title until there is a resolution (I even tried the fix which worked for Oblivioin [if anyone remembers the maxframes to render ahead setting, which you turned to 0 to remove the lagging feeling], but didn't produce results in Far Cry 2).

I am a little underwhelmed at the smoothness of movement - walking camera movement etc.

It just doesn't seem real smooth. Just a very slight, annoying jerkiness while walking around. Also, the mouse control camera movement SUCKS.

wtf
No Prone
No Lean
No Stealth

How about 1st person?

so is this a console port?

really the original had all this.
Of course the single player in the original was 40 hrs too, how long is this one.

I had the mouse lag problem, but I've enabled v-sync, turned mouse smoothing OFF, and turned the sensitivity up a touch, and it seems to have gone away.

Oh and be sure to install the latest 8.10 Catalyst drivers if you have AMD. I was having all sorts of texture issues until I realized I was still on 8.9. After I installed the new drivers and the hotfix everything is great and it runs much, much better.

And yeah, I was a little miffed about not having prone, it would be nice for sneaking around and sniping, but it's really not needed. It was probably a streamlining gameplay decision. There's already enough to think about. :p

I think I'll be playing this one for a while, I love exploring around and having the diamond/guard shack/safe house achievements keeps me wandering. I like just exploring and looking around at the beautiful scenery and environments. I've played like 3 hours already and haven't even finished the first major mission. :p

Wow, I don't think I've ever heard so much crying about a video game in my life! Enjoy it because it's FUN, not because the graphics are better than real life or because "there's no lean or prone". OMG . . .

I played for about two hours last night. I'm running 2x8800GTS 512 in SLI with the 180.42 drivers and it ran smooth as slick maxed out. I noticed something was up with the FOV running at 1680x1050 so I switched to my 19" at 1280x1024 and sure enough they are cropping the 4:3 picture. I too think the mouse is a little floaty. Hopefully they will patch this because the game seems fun.

I'm having mouse lag as well. Bumping the particle effects down a notch and bumping up the sensitivity helped a tad, but it's still present.

Not having prone is a major, major oversight. I feel like I'm spotted way too easily, and can't be as stealthy as I'd like.

Anyone know how to take screenshots ingame?

Looks fun but the graphics still look very cartoony like all games. Looks like it's going to be about another 5 years or so for graphics to be more life like. And I must say the hands don't look good at all on the screenshots above...especially the hand on the sniper rifle above..that's just terrible. I was expecting a bit more.

I agree. Looks like a 2004 game. The screenies the devs released over the past year look 10x better than these shots.

Played for about 5 hours now, on "hardcore" difficulty level. The game is fun, but it's just as shallow as Oblivion was. I't like you're a one man army fighting whole Africa. EVERYONE you meet attacks on sight (except those stupid npc's the game calls your "buddies"). There is some kind of stealth system, but it doesn't look like it's working properly. Malaria is annoying and doesn't seem to add much to the gameplay itself. Unified ammo system is stupid, but without it the game would be extremely difficult and probably annoying. There is no fucking leaning, which annoys me like hell. Every god damn semi-modern fps game has lean, but no, this one doesn't. I can live without prone, but no lean is BS. Enemy respawn rates are insane, something like garbage area in STALKER.
I get the feeling that devs liked "Apocalypse Now" movie, they probably meant for this Jackal character to be someone like Kurtz... But they failed, the story so far feels so bad it's like a tech demo for a good engine (just like it was with Oblivion, but at least this game doesn't want to call itself "cRPG").

Now, the good parts: weapons are really, really cool and the primary/secondary/special weapon slots are really well done. Though it could be difficult for a guy with regular malaria attacks to carry a .50 cal sniper rifle, PKM and M79 ;) But it's up to the player to configure a realistic or bat-shit crazy loadout. Gfx are good (but nowhere near Crysis, or even the better looking parts of STALKER: CS). Performance is great. Healing animations are AWESOME, though IMO even The Punisher wouldn't pull this kind of shit off :D Also, kudos to the dev team for the cool setting. I'm getting sick of WWII or middle east, tropical islands are also getting old. Africa is like a breath of fresh air. And it looks pretty when it burns :D

So, after 5 hours it's a solid 6+/10 for me, but I'm afraid it's gonna get boring soon. Gameplay mechanics are too simplistic and the game feels too console-ish with the diamond fetch quest and all that "x/xx unlocked/scouted/whatever" bullshit.

So I take it you weren't here when Crysis was released ?

There is no fucking leaning, which annoys me like hell. Every god damn semi-modern fps game has lean, but no, this one doesn't.

I don't think I've ever used lean in my history of gaming, generally operates like a useless/fluff function. My lean buttons usually get mapped to something more useful, since they're usually in prime keyboard real estate. Different strokes for different folks I guess.

Back on topic:

Anyone having issues with Xfire? My xfire downloaded an update with support for FC2, so it shows me playing the game. Under the Tools > Options > Games tab, I changed a setting for Far Cry 2 from DBD9 to DBD10 (dx10), so now xfire shows up in game. I can take screenshots, message, etc, but ONLY IN WINDOWED MODE. If I have it in full screen, my key combos will completely alt+f4 the game.

Any ideas? Is it just a non support feature of xfire for now?

Also, any idea on how to connect directly to a multiplayer server? Can you join in the middle of the game? Xfire showed my friends IP and port, but when I use the Direct Connect ONLINE option, it says that it is an invalid ip address. It doesn't give that message when I use just the IP and no port number (but obviously that won't work).

really? leaning is a godsend in COD4 MP. i wish they had included a lean function in FC2.

So you have to scout out all the diamonds as like side quests? Or are finding the diamonds all through missions you get through your buddies? Someone care to elaborate?

The diamond thing is totally random. You can tell you're near one, because your GPS will start to flash...then you have to play a game of Hot or Cold to find it. They are mostly found in camps and wreckage. Has nothing to do with missions.

How I fixed mouse lag/float: I started up playing with everything on high and DX10 render. While frame rates seemed smooth, NPC's and all animations were fluid, I had mouse lag. Which is a sign of fps issues in my experience.

I played round extensively.

I found that dropping back to DX9, so that I could lower the shadow setting to low, fixed the mouse lag. Everything else still on high. Shadows seem to be a cause of mouse lag in my games for me. =(

Still there is an odd acceleration feature that is awkward. Slow movement with slight mouse movments, and fast quick quick movements. =/ Personally not a fan of mouse acceleration. But got used to it after playing for awhile.

It does need a LEAN left right real bad.

I'm so used to Q and E being leaning, I nearly blew my self up yesterday since Q is default grenade throw =(

I didn't think there would be this much bitching....

It's a great game to me, I love it.

Uhh, Vsync and AA are known to do that in that game, try turning those off.

What? Are you sure you aren't playing Far Cry 1?

Yeah Im kinda missing lean and also nearly blew myself up with trying to lean left :D

Yes, lean would be wonderful.

Also, does anyone else love the spreading fire? You can even shoot oil lamps and they start fires all by themselves.

I'm having terrible problems with mouse lag. It feels as if I'm playing in slow mo and the mouse trails behind, makes it unplayable. Has anyone else managed to sort this issue yet?

Edit - sorry I missed the post above re shadow, I'll try that

Yup. It's not hard to spread that fire around to a bunch of nearby trees! Looks awesome too!

I haven't found any solution so far, nothing has fixed the issue. The issue is mentioned on every Far Cry 2 forum I can find (including the steampowered forums), so presumably someone will work it out soon. It's disappointing though, since I don't want to play until it's sorted...

EDIT: I will be sure to post the solution here when I find it. I trust others will do the same!

Game is hard too. I am playing on whatever is most difficult, haven't had this hard of a time in many games. I constantly run out of ammo, I was forced to infiltrate the whole camp with a sniper and a pistol, that was fun. I guess I need to save diamonds up and buy a bigger ammo belt.

What's everybody's favorite setup?
Mine:
default pistol, rarely use
Sniper
PKM
2xMolotov
2xNade

Just hoping there is a widescreen hack soon. Unbelievable that they did not do that right. The game would be so much more involving if the perspective was more natural. As is, pretty good. Not sure wtf is up with the aiming or guys taking a whole clip to kill sometimes. Oh and the mounted machine gun is??? You can't hit people easily and forget about it if there is even a skinny tree or pole or anything b/w you and the target. It is a pretty good game but it is also GTA in Africa.

Thanks, I've set it to DX9 and Shadows low. Everything else is very high. Runs smoothly now. In DX10 mode even in the menus it was lagging badly.
