My Far Cry 2 Quick Thoughts, AWESOME

My performance is at the "sux balls" level right now.

I got a trojan warning from AVG while installing...the warning was for the install file. I own a legit copy, bought from GameStop yesterday.

The controls interface is S***. Why can't you select mouse wheel up/down for next/previous weapon in interface menu?

My game has locked 3x out of 4 loading the first level.

The audio is S***. No choice for 2.1, stereo, headphone, 5.1 etc...? FTW. I have X-Fi extreme gamer, and the sound is crap. I am chopping away at some furniture, or firing away at some baddies, and the sound is muffled and delayed.

I have everything set at "very high" and I am getting an unplayable 11 fps or so on the first level.

Jeezus.

Anyone?

my rig:

Core 2 duo (wolfdale) E8400 @ 3.5
4GB OCZ platinum DDR2
RaptorX 150 gb
eVGA 780i sli deluxe
2 x evga 8800GT KO in SLI
Creative X-FI extreme gamer
OCZ GameXstream 600W PSU
latest Forceware.

glitchy at best.

Oh, and purchased from GameSpot...where is my map and my 3 hours of gameplay?

Oh, and why did I have to type in the save serial 3x to get it to register.

ftw.

First of all, game came out today. And uhh, mouse scroll wheel works fine for me. I dunno, I love the game :).

Trojan on your legit game? It has happened but not for me.

I bought a copy and promptly downloaded the crack for the drm and no dvd. Works great. Glad I could find a compromise b/c I am bored out of my mind with cod4.

DA kicks ass and it's probably one of the most responsive mice I've used. Did you ever play Halo 2 for PC? That game also had a "follow the mouse" feel to it. It felt so off, I never got past the first 1/4 of the game.

Agreed, I love the mouse! Haven't done Halo on the PC (got the 360 for the console games, screw the ports!).

Honestly the game does have a bit of a console feel to it. Not nearly as fast-paced as PC-FPSs are. It's really either a slower version of FarCry (open-world shooter) or a consolized STALKER-Africa.

Right now I'd give it an 85, it does a lot of things right but it just feels too slowed-down and dumbed-down. In some ways they strike a nice balance, no mini-map is balanced with street signs glowing when you need to go that way, and in some ways it just feels slow.

Are you serious?
insidewheelmouse.jpg

Is that what you use to control the cursor on the Abacus?

Far Cry 2 runs pretty good with my rig, going to have to fiddle with the settings later, stupid studying!

Anyone figure out how to change the FOV yet? I can't believe there is no /fov console command.... comeon.

I believe securom sometimes kicks back with false positives due to the activation component.

Yes, I tried all the obvious ones, eg: cg_fov and fov. There is no mention of fov in the help list, which lists some console commands.

i've just been playing for about an hour.... edit: with the wrong drivers

with the beta 180's, my sli 8800's are rockin this game @ 1920x1080.

impressive scaling with sli.

Who cares about performance? Talk about the game! How long is it? Is it repetitive having to drive around everywhere always dealing with roadblocks?

the game's fun. aiming is good. characters are immersive. graphics are decent. fire effects are great.

the reviewers are pretty much spot on.

This has to be the best game ive ever played, its been a while since I fully enjoyed all aspects of a game. Runs great too, 2560x1600, dx10, very high 4aa with no problems.

The only thing I disliked was the trogan alert during installation. I cant even find on my system anymore .

I am definitely noticing the mouse lag issue and it is kind of annoying but the rest of the game is amazing so far in my opinion. And here are some screenshots. Everything High and Very High with textures Ultra High. No AA though.

damn, everything looks so great on high... and yeah, mouse lag issue is really annoying. I'm gonna put playing this game on hold until a patch is made.

this game is awesome! and i have the game stop preorder map which comes in handy.

You and your damned tri-sli GTX 280 setup!! I'm green with envy :p

Would u mind upping a couple of screenies of the game running in 2560x1600 with 4xAA?

hmmmm... I must doing something wrong, because I swore this was a sandbox game and I could do whatever and go where ever I want. Apparently this is not true?

Map Locations Discussed below:

I wanted to go to Mike's bar instead of going to scout the lumber yard, but I get sick and pass out. Cant a guy get a damn drink after what just happened.

yeah, initially getting out of the first village my escape route involved jumping into a river... as soon as i hit the water, i was pulled into a jeep... from the middle of the river.

found that odd.

still can't destroy the sandbags.

Is the mouse lag possibly from having vsync enabled? Most games i have vsync disabled for that very reason but there are the few exceptions for whatever reason dont have the mouse lag with vsync.

I finally got to play it and...Its ok. Not the graetest, but good. I am having some bad artifacting issues though. Im using a fresh install of Vista 64bit Ultimate and the 180's from nvidia. Im a little disappointed in this because I shouldn't be having any issues at all. Im running the game at max at 1920x1080 with AA on 8 and Im averaging around 60-70 FPS.

Looks fun but the graphics still look very cartoony like all games. Looks like it's going to be about another 5 years or so for graphics to be more life like. And I must say the hands don't look good at all on the screenshots above...especially the hand on the sniper rifle above..that's just terrible. I was expecting a bit more. This is definite cause to sell the PC, lol.

guys the mouse lag I think comes from DX 10 mode. As soon as switched from DX10 to 9, I think there is a less amount of mouse lag. Runs pretty good with the system in sig. :)

The roadblocks are a bit tedious, especially when having to manage health packs (the worst part of the game). I just played it for an hour and a half and it felt like 5 minutes passed, if thats any indication.

Oh and the AI is actually pretty tough. They will shoot at you the second the see you come around a corner. If you practice, you can hide in the bushes and they'll walk right past you. They even flank and hide. A few bugs where they won't give a shit if their buddy is being stabbed, but overall very impressive.

My favorite part so far was setting a brush fire to block a convoy, and throwing a Molotov into the car caring the VIP when they stopped.:p

Hell, even the Zebras will try to get back up.

Needs more fire! 19x12 with everything on "very high" except "post fx" and "ambient" and 2x AA, 88GTX keeps on ticking.

This is why we don't play with molotovs!

Ahh yes, the beauty of running a PC rig :)

Everything should be working fine, but is not. I guess the only thing to do is get the ol' trouble shooting boots out and sort dat shit out! After all, that's what us PC users are good at!

Anyone comparing this game to Crysis is kidding themselves. I think this game looks slightly worse than oblivion, other than the fire and lighting effects.

I noticed the mouse lag as well, will experiment with switching back to DX9 like posted above and see if that helps. I think it's mouse acceleration left over from the console version.

I think a lot of these comments are a bit dumb, the graphics are very good, if they were any better people would be complaining about performance like with Crysis. The AI is actually pretty reasonable, I've seen no real major issues where it's doing dumb things yet.

My main gripe still remains the number of shots it takes to kill people, firefights are tough even on "normal" and I'm a pretty adept FPS gamer. Oh and another minor gripe, the FOV does seem a little low, if anyone works out the FOV command let us all know please!
