Mortal Kombat (2011)

People please don't argue, just say your peace and move on. We all had some affinity towards SF, MK, and VF - clearly some more than others. MK is know for it's quick, if not near jerky movements. This was attributed to the old mocap/digital conversions - which eventually became a hallmark. MK has a fairly deep story for a fighting game compared to it's counterparts. In it's time MK had a robust, interesting, and mature theme like nobody has seen. Yes, violence has now been done to death in this day and age, but it's a breath of fresh air that us OG MK fans get what we've been wanting for nearly a decade...let us enjoy!

Looks terrible. Why cant people just grow up and let franchies die? MK was and always will be a 90's generation game. It died out a long time ago. MK2 will never be outdone.

While I'm all for letting franchises die when they need to (Tekken probably should take a break after #6...), look no further than SF4 to see a glorious franchise returning to its roots and doing great.
I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt because it really does seem like they're at least partially going back to the MK2/MK3 era this time around. It still might suck, but it's tough to judge based upon what we have now.

theres other fighting games? lol the problem is that only the core community really knows about the other 2D/3D fighting games.. but anyone born before 1990 and didnt live under a rock pretty much knows what mortal kombat and street fighter are.. thats the group they are going for.. the people that remember the game at the beginning and will most likely pick up even more people along with it because of the gruesome style of fighting that IS mortal kombat.. theres times when you innovate and improve on stuff.. but in this case MK has to go back to its roots style otherwise it just turns into another boring 3D fighter game..

MK did turn into just another crappy 3D fighting game. You spent more time on camera movements and circling your opponent than actually fighting. They are getting back to what's important and that's gameplay. Mortal Kombat was different, but they nailed it pretty well with MK2. MK3 wasn't nearly as polished. It just had way more characters and way more levels/fatalities.

The finishers look really cool, I hope they have a simple way of doing them cuz with the past games, some were extremely hard to do when you had to be a certain distance from your opponent and what not.

Here's hoping it will be a 1or2 button press and maybe a direction on the pad.

Fatalities will probably be handled the way they were in the past. Some will be much easier than others and they'll all probably require some practice.

What does this have to do with growing up? Why should a franchise die? Because its old? If they can still put out good material then I see no reason why it should die or go on hiatus. When its sucking then its often time to put it away. The last several Mortal Kombat games were worse than MK3/MK Trilogy, but it had gotten a little better in more recent installments despite still being 3D. Now they've decided to go back to their roots. As far as gameplay, none of us have played it yet so we know very little other than what we saw in an E3 demo. There is a lot of time between E3 and the game's release for improvements and tweaks.

I'm hoping they turn that fan made video into a full length film. O:

That's a completely different topic. While it was cool they changed the back stories for the characters a little too much.

Truthfully violence in fighting games has only really been done by Mortal Kombat. Most other games didn't have anything nearly as graphic as the fatalities. At least none that I know of. Anyway, I'm hoping this game is as solid and interesting as Mortal Kombat II was.

Agreed.

Looks very nice, but the fighting animation... I dont know.. seems awkward. Being a fighting genre fan, games and movies, MK just looks clunky. I like the original and MKII was pretty good, but MK's gameplay recently and it seems to include this game, just seems like a novelty. Maybe it's profiling, but MK just radiates this kind of clunky American WWF cheesy dance parade fighting. While also fun clayfighters seemed like it suffered from the same issue. Tekken to a lesser extent. I guess ever since Street Fighter III and Marvel vs capcom I've felt more at home with Asian influenced fighting games. Fast paced fluid fighting mirroring actual martial arts if a bit fantastical. Probably just me talking out my ass.

I'll still check it out.

This new Mortal Kombat seems to be being developed with its core fanbase in mind - not for those who never liked MK or were only on the bandwagon at the height of its popularity in 1994.

Only other game I know of that had fatalities was Eternal Champions. Its fatalities were all stage-based though. Bushido Blade had to-the-death combat but no actual fatality moves to speak of. I never played Primal Rage and Killer Instinct but I remember watching them enough to know they were fairly violent.

I played all those games and none of them had anything on the level of violence that Mortal Kombat did. It was by far the most gruesome about it. Basically you got blood from the other games and at least Primal Rage had fatalities, but they weren't nearly as graphic as the Mortal Kombat games were about it. I don't remember Eternal Champions enough to recall the specifics concerning the fatalities.

i love MK im stoked for it but Im still waiting for another Killer Instinct

I do remember Eternal Champions, but the "fatalities" were only stage based indeed (like the pit in MK).

I do remember Primal Rage, but don't remember fatalities per say...I remember it having prehistorical creatures tho, like dinosaurs and stuff...which to me makes the whole thing less violent altogether (Giant monkey being decapitated isn't the same as human being decapitated).

2D MK FTW!!

BTW, can any of you tell me how good/bad was MK vs DC Universe, and why?

I looked at a few reviews, and they were all pretty good...but I want to know how the game is from a MK veteran/fan point of view.

Thanks!

Eternal Champions for the Sega CD had several different fatality options, from a standard kill, to background kill, to even a "cinematic" cut scene kill. While it was condemned to a system few people had, it was an absolutely awesome 2D fighting game. The original was so-so, though.
Time Killers even had kill moves that could be done at any time during a match.
Killer Instinct had finishing options, too.
Lots of games have tried to copy the idea, and sadly most of them did a better job than MK did after MK2.

Mortal Kombat II is easily the best of the series so far. The first one had originality, but the second one was improved in every possible way. The third game and its variants were OK, but they weren't very polished and frankly had too many characters, too many fatalities, and were just too ambitious for their time. I didn't care for their Killer Instinct Light combo system either. In some ways the game took a step backwards from MKII in visual style and certainly the games atmosphere wasn't as good. It just went downhill from there. Though Deadly Alliance and Mortal Kombat vs. DC were improvements over previous 3D MK games.

Thanks for the heads up on Time Killers; I couldn't remember the name.
Personally, if MK was to go all ultra violent I would kill for a game that mixed Bushido Blade and Time Killers elements together. Mainly, Bushido Blade's mechanic where fights can end in 3 slashes or go on forever, and Time Killers ability to chop off limbs during the match.

As I recall Bushido Blade was cool, but not all that violent. At least not compared to MK.

Nah, the blood and gore in Bushido Blade was rather tame, but the fight itself tried to be realistic. Slice a dude through his neck? Yeah, he's dead and you win. Slice the leg? Dude has to crawl around now. Also you could throw sand in the other person's face.

Honestly, the less like Time Killers ANY game is, the better. It was fun for about 5 minutes until you realize how horrible the actual game was. It's weird spinoff/sequel game (the one that got the original Johnny Cage fired), Bloodstorm was just as bad.
Time Killers was only good for watching matches end in 5-10 seconds or earning goofy things like an "armless victory."

Of the non Street Fighter 2D fighting games I liked MK2, World Heroes, and some of the early Fatal Fury games. After some of those SNK games got their 10th sequel (with 50 new characters each) it got to be a little much.

I used to be a big fan of Tekken, but I think #6 has been a total mess. Combos are now ridiculously long to the point that you just want to walk away and grab a beer every time you get hit. That plus there are 50 characters with hundreds of moves and strings that have to be defended differently.

I didn't play Bushido Blade that much. A friend of mine had it but I never did.

- The multiple fighting styles each fighter had access to in Deadly Alliance and Deception were removed
- Weapons were removed
- Dumbed-down move lists and combos
- No fatalities for DC heroes - just "heroic brutalities" which were extremely lame and soft
- Incredibly tame levels of violence
- No stage fatalities
- Fatalities were extremely soft, especially when compared to those of other MK games

Man, I had forgotten all about Time Killers until this thread. Given your thoughts on how terrible it was, what about the ultimate MK ripoff that everyone loves to hate: Way of the Warrior? Personally, I liked the White Zombie soundtrack and the graphics were nice, but few of the characters were very likeable and the actual fighting mechanics (or lack thereof) were so clunky and unrefined...just terrible "flow" compared to SF or even MK.

Let's not forget TMNT Tournament Fighters, World Heroes, Shaq-Fu, Samurai Shodown, Battle Arena Toshinden, Dead or Alive, and Ballz (I believe Ballz is worthy of a mention for trying to be unique; trying to remember if it had fatalities).

And last but not least, I remember buying FX Fighter for PC thinking that it would be like Virtua Fighter, Soul Edge, Battle Arena Toshinden, and other 3D polygonal fighters at the time).

See, I mean that's my point exactly. Look at what MK had to compete with i.e. not much.
Rewind to 2010, and 2d fighters are much better than they have ever been. So here's hoping the new MK has some nice shit under its sleeve.

What other 2D fighting games am I missing out on that are so great? There is Street Fighter IV. What else? I'm being serious, if there is something I'm missing I'd like to know about it. I love fighting games nearly as much as FPS games.

I'm having a hard time because of this damn game. I'm going to want it meaning I'll be requiring a console. PS3 or 360. I'd prefer a 360 for Live and the slightly better graphics, but I can't stand the damn funky d-pad on it. A good d-pad will be needed for the "tap, tap" type moves. The PS3 controller would be perfect.
I'm still weighing my options. This isn't meant to derail the thread as this game is the only reason I'm looking into buying a console.
Decisions...decisions...

There is hope for a PC version. Street Fighter IV was well received on PC and they have in fact put out Mortal Kombat games for the PC in the past. MK, MKII, MK3, and MK Trilogy were all released on the PC.

Oh man..I really hope the new mortal kombat makes it to PC. I love SF4 on PC, and I can't wait for the pc release of Blazblue: calamity trigger.

Apparently the PC version of Street Fighter IV got pirated to hell and back, which is why Capcom is very hesitant to release Super Street Fighter IV for the platform. Can't expect Boon and co. would be too thrilled about putting it on PC given what has happened to its most direct rival.

You pretty much hit the nail on the head. There aren't THAT many out there right now. There's SF4 (and Super SF4), BlazBlue, KOF, and the older ports like HD Remix and Marvel vs. Capcom.
Most of those hit in the last 2 years, so it's a bit of a rebound, but it's nothing compared to the mid to late 90's.

There are the other two VS Capcom spinoffs too (SNK and Tatsunoko).

Just saw this thread. I'm a huge MK fan (arcade since day 1) and this looks bad ass.

Can't wait.

Back in the days when i was mashing my palms on the ole mk1 arcade machine ;)

Glad to see they're going back to what made them popular in the first place, and it looks soo satisfying.

MK ALL THE WAY

I just bought MK vs DC used for $10.00

I figured it can't be that bad...

I did the same thing. It isn't bad. In fact its a pretty good fighting game in general but compared to the last Mortal Kombat games they did dumb it down somewhat. The Fatalities aren't what they used to be either. They are far more tame. All in all still pretty good and the story mode was enjoyable.

Since a 2d MK came out?

Well there,s MvC2, Capcom vs.tatsunoko, Guilty Gear (and its iterations), and BlazBlue. Of course then you have the Street Fighters. I'm sure I'm missing a few, but there's a competitive 2d fighter scene that keeps up with the genre: http://evo2k.com/

I know this is Street Fighter, but it doesn't look like MK will be able to have matches like this

I meant lately. I'm well aware of the horde of them which have been released since Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter were at the height of their popularity.

I just watched all the fatalities on youtube, man the 3d MK's looked terrible, much worse than the 2d.

Well the early ones did. The newer 3D Mortal Kombat games looked better but you have to bear in mind that MK vs. DC is the only one made for current generation consoles. The last game was a PS2 game. So they aren't exactly new. As for looking worse than the 2D games, that's bullshit. Well except maybe as far as MK4 was concerned, but the 2D games looked pretty bad. MKII certainly had great style, but the sprite based graphics look terrible by today's standards.
