MLAA will never support WinXP?

Asking this question for a buddy on an old XP system considering a 6850 to extend it's life. I told him that morphological antialiasing will likely never be made available for WinXP because it uses Directcompute 5.0. IIRC, that is only supported for DX10/11. Am I correct in telling him this? It's unlikely to ever be supported by XP right?

Pretty much. It makes no sense for AMD to waste the time porting MLAA to XP(it's a HLSL so it could be technically possible). Most people running a 5xxx or 6xxx card have moved to Windows Vista or 7 now and they need to keep their software teams working on improving game compatibility and improving Crossfire.

I finally made the jump from WinXP to Win7 this month in anticipation of the upcoming HD6970 after nine years of using it as my main OS. Talk about hardware driving software sales. :)

As long as they continue driver support for XP, I'll still be using it. :)

Well you've got until 2014 at most. That is when Microsoft discontinues support for XP. I imagine most other vendors will discontinue support before that.

Personally I suggest not being an XP zealot and/or stick in the mud and moving to 7. It is an exceedingly good OS.

Yah, with a few tweeks and personalization Win7 is basically just like XP, only with more capabilities and driver/feature support. Been perfectly happy with it myself.

Then again, I also thought Vista was fine after I'd changed stuff around a bit.

It's not like Windows 7 is going to be any cheaper by that time. You don't really gain anything by sticking with XP, other than postponing the inevitable.

windows 7 is alright, the only thing I dont like about it so far is the fuss it causes about older hardware - like having to tinker with the firewire controller driver to not suffer from BSODs when watching youtube videos

Crashes can almost always be attributed to other causes than the OS though, at least that's been my experience with Win2k, XP, Vista and Win7. The earlier versions could sometimes have odd crashes which I couldn't track to drivers or hardware, but with the later versions I've always found the cause somewhere else.

It's about time to upgrade from XP...

It's not about time, it's overdue.

With the launch of 7, there is no reason to stick with XP. Even Vista SP1 made a convincing argument that the XP days were over, but 7 put the nail in the coffin.

I upgraded from XP to Win7 mainly for DX10/11 and SSD TRIM support. A new OS also has advantages like more drivers shipped by default.

There was this time a few months ago, where a buddy of mine got a random Wifi USB dongle from someone for free because it was broken/didn't work. Sure enough he said it didn't work on his computer (running WinXP) as it couldn't find drivers or something. I get him to bring it over and looking at it there's no brand name or model# or anything. I decided to plug it in anyways hoping Windows might find a matching driver. Guess what? It did! The damn thing works after all.

XP is a dinosaur, the sooner it dies the better for all involved.

As someone who works in the field, I can't tell you how much I agree with that statement. I loved XP don't get me wrong, but man am I tired of looking at the ugly OS now :D.

7 has so much to offer (looks aside). Not to mention most of the time I am working on something with XP its an old POS that I wish they would replace.

Well XP is 9 (almost 10) years old now, it's been around for a while. Win 7 is a great OS and is sooo much better than XP, especially 64-bit.

XP 64 bit rocks :)

I have no idea why you would want to swap to windows 7. Windows 7 all in all is a nice operating system but not the big leap it is supposed to be. The only thing it has which is worthwhile is DX11 not even DX10 was worth installing it for.

The operating system still makes the epic flaw of allowing users to log in as administrator and you're still vulnerable when using applications which have direct acces to the kernel (IE OE). The filesystem is so bad as well , i mean for how many years do we have to suffer the defragmentation syndrome in ntfs while ext3 has been out for ages and MS "claims" to innovate.

Happy 7 user here, and if your a gamer your stuck having to upgrade. outside of that not so much.

I wasn't looking to "upgrade" to Windows 7, but I had to for 64-bit memory...etc...

But I'm glad I did, runs more stable & overall better than XP ever did for me, surprisingly.

DX11 is just a bonus, and some features look really good too.

Y.

its actually better in almost every way.

the number is higher.

You obviously haven't had a chance to actually use Win 7 yet or you wouldn't be sticking with XP. ;)

btw, from personal experience, NTFS is faster than ext3 or 4, but it isn't as stable.

Also, if the file system is so bad, why the hell are you sticking with XP? 7 has been improved quite a bit, though it's not perfect, it's still better than XP.

I have always updated my OS WAY after they come out, YEARS after. It was easy to skip Vista and go to 7. Very glad I made the move, and I loved XP also.

Wait, what? Muhahahahaha....You must be in a cave dude!

lol i have xp x64. I also use windows 7 and vista a lot of times. There's no real difference at all in usability. Been using xp x64 on my main rig for already a few years with no hiccups. Windows was all about improving stability for almost every release. Now after xp x64 its about looks and small tweaks. We all know we can surf and do everything practically that can be done on 7 on xp. Not dx11 but there's not much else that has been improved from the user end. Some people can say 7 is faster but its the same practically. 7 may be a good option for someone buying a new pc but someone who has xp and hasn't upgraded yet would probably be better to wait for windows 8. By next year there's probably going to be RCs or betas. I think the big changes will happen in 8. Will be more worth it to upgrade then.

Dude, no. Win7 has so many more features than XP. I'm sorry, but did you use 7 for only 5 minutes? Also, why are you still using Vista?

I get that XP x64 is good fun, but there are far better OSes out there with way less security risks (Win 7, OS X, Ubuntu, etc.). XP is damn near obsolete, but if you want to use it, it's your choice. ;)

IMHO XP has the greatest interface and best functionality of any OS ever.

Make no mistake you'll complete all navigation tasks in XP twice as fast as Win7 simply because the interface is superior.

The new start menu is a joke. I don't wanna have to type an app name each time I want to open it it quickly, I just wanna click on start, have the screen fill up with ALL my apps shortcuts in one go, leaving me just one click away from ANY of my programs.

MS dumbed down the UI to copy Apple and it's crap.

If MS hadn't made DX10/11 Vista/Win7 only I bet Win7 wouldn't be anywhere near as popular (in terms of after market OS sales, no pre-installed) 'cos that's the only tangible upgrade over XP (don't mention security 'cos I've never had a single virus on my own PC with XP and I never run AV software).

Ultimately, lack of MLAA support for XP just makes me wanna go nvidia this round.

That doesn't make any sense at all but whatever to each their own.

BTW you do NOT have to write the name of the app on Windows 7, you can just use the mouse normally if you feel that is faster...

Couldn't disagree more with this post. With search and the new task bar it's MUCH easier to navigate 7 versus XP, especially on touchscreen devices which I use everyday.

It's very much a matter of perspective and how one actually uses their computer. If you have tons of XP tweaks and are used the XP interface I could see why one would prefer XP over 7 but if you are simply trying to launch apps and find stuff 7 is vastly superior and as I said 7 works much better on non-traditional environments such as Tablet PCs.

More directly on topic, I have no idea other than for legacy gaming why ANYONE would want to use the latest and greatest hardware with a ten year old OS, it's pointless. And DX 10/11 on XP wasn't something that would have been easy to back port to XP and certainly not worth the effort.

See, this. W7 is like, totally obviously the second coming of christ. But as it stands right now, I can't find any W7 drivers for my older scanner, my parents printer, nor can I use it to drive the parallel OR serial relay boards I've soldered up to control various things about the house/case. My sound card gives me trouble, BSOD's and failure to route sound to it's optical connection - and requires I restart frequently... Whereas I left my XP install running for months at a time.

But every other aspect of the OS is at least marginally better... Once you get used to the random arbitrary changes they made (Like, for the first time in years, Add and Remove Programs is simply called, "Programs." WTF is that about. Minor change? Absolutely, but heading for that control panel has become akin to a twitch reflex!)

Oh yeah, and winsxs is a fucking bitch on an 80gb drive. Before I knew about that folder, my install - starting at 12gb - creeped up to a massive 22gb over a few months. What the fuck is that about.

no winsxs is enough of a reason to stay with xp.

I run 7 on my main rig, but I just can't justify a redundant 30gig folder on my laptop, xp is great for those who don't want bloated compatibility folders.

Windows XP has winsxs, too.

But I will gladly pay 7gb in hdd space for an OS that doesn't suck balls. Yes, I said it, XP sucks. It is not great, it isn't even good. It's OK at best.

That said, if you want to live in the past feel free. Just means you're as outdated as your OS is - an OS that should have died 5 years ago.

XP was great 8 years ago, it is anything but great today.

Do you know how crappy it is to go to work and use XP based machines after living in a Win7 world for almost 2 years? That, my friends, is what suck feels like (XP at work).

If you're going to use ancient hardware then yes, you need an ancient OS. That's not that difficult of a deduction.

For everything modern Win7 is awesome and light years ahead of XP.
