Conclusion updated. I'm not keeping the 6870.

-- HERE COME THE SCREENSHOTS, ALL VERIFIED TO HAVE MLAA (or not, where noted) ---

STALKER SOC + 2009 COMPLETE NO AA + MLAA
STALKER PICS ARE LOSSY JPG SORRY THERE IS NO OTHER WAY TO CAP STALKER CURRENTLY

STREET FIGHTER IV NO AA (possibly, I don't remember) + MLAA

SFIV with MLAA and Posterization filter

SFIV with MLAA and Ink filter (requested)

Rainbow Six Vegas 2 Level 3 (??) AA + MLAA

GTA IV NO AA + MLAA

MASS EFFECT 1 4xAA + MLAA

FLATOUT ULTIMATE CARNAGE 4xAA + MLAA

DRAGON AGE ORIGINS 4xAA + MLAA

ALPHA PROTOCOL NO AA + MLAA

ELDER SCROLLS OBLIVION 4xAA + MLAA
Please ignore the screenshot borders, Oblivion screenshot key is lossless but doesn't show MLAA (and blocks CTRL-PRTNSCRN) so I am reduced to using snipping tool in windowed mode.

GAMES WHICH APPEAR BROKEN WITH MLAA (either standard or edge detect)
Saint's Row 2 - doesn't display non-static models and incorrectly shows entire rendered scene (incompletely rendered) ignoring line-of-sight. Completely broken.
Vampire Bloodlines - Headless models and other things invisible.

GAMES WHICH DO NOT APPEAR TO VISUALLY BENEFIT FROM MLAA
Alien Swarm

---SUMMARY---

Bottom line: MLAA makes a HUGE difference, especially in games that need it the most (ones that don't allow AA normally due to full screen shader effects). This is a huge game changer for me, and I'm sure I am not alone. I'm an AA whore and this is big. It's huge. Temporal AA was a joke, Quincunx was irrelevent, but MLAA is pure fucking awesome. It's really the wave of the future. Absolutely without question.

It's just a pity the 6870 is so underwhelming in other areas. The drivers are better than they used to be with ATI, but they're still second rate. I have a huge list of game issues, some crippling and ludicrous. The heat output is reduced, but the fan is much too loud over 40% which does happen on auto from time to time even when watching compressed video or browsing webpages. Absurd nonsense. It overclocks poorly and the heat/power usage increases rapidly even with a mild OC. The list goes on.

MLAA is the wave of the future, and I love it more than any new driver level quality improvement I've seen in many years, but it's just not enough. I'm probably headed back to my GTX 260 or 460, or I might spring for a 470 if there is a good black friday deal. Ah well.

Wow- I didn't think I'd see you keep that 6870 ;-) I haven't tried the MLAA yet, but I plan to soon. Especially once I get that second 6850. How is your experience as far as HUDs, text, etc?

I haven't played with it for more than an hour yet but I have seen very few anomalies or performance issues related to it so far. There are some, its not going to be playable with every game, but the ones it is...:eek::eek:

I'd love to see some screenies at some point, particularly of Stalker. I was thinking about picking up the whole series sometime soon, but if MLAA is that big of a difference, I'd gladly put it off until I upgrade. Will just make me want to play it that much more.

PRoblem with screenies is that its post-processing- screenshots will not show the MLAA, just the unprocessed image. Check the [H] review to see some screens they got using a tool AMD sent them that post-processes the images.

can you post a screenshot of GTA 4? would really like to see how well it actually works. thanks

edit: read post above. guess you can't do it :(

Nice, that is how you know its a good feature. I was sure you were going to get rid of it after your last thread but damn. MLAA FTW. Enjoy bro

I actually can take screenshots with fraps and it appears to show most or all MLAA properly. GTA IV next. Any other requests?

You sure about that?

"Not Screenshot Compatible

AMD has provided a utility that runs the same code as the driver on screenshots to filter them just like they would look in-game with Morphological AA enabled. It is this utility we have to use to show you image quality comparison today because of the nature of post-processing, it cannot be captured from a FRAPS screenshot."

I did not capture the stalker picture from a fraps screenshot I did it within the game, and I compared side-by-side it IS showing MLAA I promise you that.

Edit: well, its showing AA at least, I cant promise its MLAA but I compared the screenshot with the game via alt-tabbing and it looks identical. Stalker also did not have the slowdown you normally get with AA enabled (ATI or NV) which surprised the heck out of me.

Edit2: I took two screens in Stalker, one with the game, one with fraps, they are almost identical but not quite, so I'm not sure what to think of that.

I'm not totally convinced that stalker picture is shown with MLAA properly either, despite how good it looks. I can't get any other game to take screenshots either in-game method or fraps, so if it is working in stalker, it's totally an anomaly. Pity too, because MLAA in Dragon Age is absolutely jaw dropping. Just incredible.

try taking a screenshot with the in game screen cap then take the exact same screenshot with fraps. use the MLAA tool to add the MLAA into the fraps screenshot then compare the two. see if theres any difference.

Wow. Just wow- I tried MLAA for the first time last night. I played some Starcraft2 with it, and MAN- it looks AMAZING. It made the text look a little different, as well as the minimap, but honestly- the text was still perfectly readable, and looked good IMO, and the minimap actually looks pretty good too- just a little rounding on some of the edges, but I kinda like that over the squares there anyway. I will be playing with MLAA in SC2 always now.

I can see how it would be a game-changer. It even removed your in-game hunger judging by the screenshots.

Anyone know when they'll release proper drivers for the 58XX series to run MLAA without input lag?

:p two very different times taken, they weren't taken side by side I had to go back later on to get a similar one.

I can't quite decide if I like it or not. It certainly gets rid of jaggies, but it definitely removes some of the general sharpness as well. Consider that small tower in the middle of the screenshots; in one screenshot it looks metallic and very jagged, in the other screenshot the jaggies are gone, but so is the metallic 'shine'.

I want AMD to support running MLAA on just the center screen in an Eyefinity setup. Since it is post processing, that shouldn't be difficult, and would allow Eyefinity + AA without massive VRAM requirements or GPU grunt.

It's what I refer to as the PS3 Vaseline effect. Why I often choose 360 multi-platform titles.

It's good in some games, but horrendous in others. Great to have the choice though, the more the merrier, getting something for nothing.

I'm still waiting for official support on 5xxx cards. ATI, please don't hold these back for much longer. We all know it works (hacked drivers), but the hacked drivers have reports of input lag.

I've been trying to take some pictures but my RL cameras are not quality enough to show MLAA in action (I only have a Droid and a canon powershot A410). Anyone have a link to that tool that you can use to add MLAA to screenshots? I want to see if that is a reasonable facsimile to what its actually like in the game.

The tool is in this big thread somewhere and probably posted by Tamlin_WSGF

Played R6Vegas2 for 3 hours today, not one single issue with MLAA and it looks amazing, much better than it did before. Also played some more Dragon Age, Stalker, GRID, and Shattered Horizon, and from what I can tell, it works 90-95% perfectly on all of them so far. Stalker has an occasional stutter but I can't blame that on MLAA since it did it before I enabled AA of any type. I can't find display issues with hud, and only a few with text (Vegas2 load screen text gets blurry and funny looking/warped as it loads, very amusing and irrelevant). Usually text looks different, but not "bad". I'm enthusiastic, and off to play some more games. Back later tonight for another update.

:):):)

Can't DL it though, worst DL site in history. Fucking worst DL site in history for real. GRRRRR all I get is repeated stupid advertisements and "fake forum" webpages no matter what I click. Waiting for DL to start doesn't work either. Someone repost this shiz.

Wow. hadn't thought of that. That would be awesome!

I don't ever use aa because I game on a 30" dell and I don't really notice jagged edges. But it does seem like a nice feature for smaller resolutions.

AA is a quality feature regardless of resolution or screen size. Some people personally don't care about it, but for others, its a "make or break" feature for many games.

While this is true, at high resolutions the jaggies are lot smaller, which is why I said I don't notice them and mlaa is a nice feature for lower resolutions.

You don't notice them, but I do. I notice them regardless of resolution. I knew N64 had AA before i ever played a game on it, from watching promo material... at the time I didn't know AA was coming to PC so quickly but I was very glad it did. It's a feature I can't live without.

Anyone try this on Borderlands yet?

Borderlands isn't very compatible with AA, I tried to force it but it didn't work properly. I'll give it another go sometime but that particular game will not benefit much from MLAA I don't think due to the cel-shaded edges already in place.

Yeah, I see the jaggies like night and day even on my 2560x1600 display. If I toss on 2x AA it becomes tolerable, but I still prefer 4-8x even at this resolution.

Regarding MLAA... it's a nice feature, seems to blur the textures a bit much for my liking, though I'd use it on some games. I'd definitely use it for deferred-rendering engine games where normal AA isn't an option. I'm hoping we see this as an option going forward for all cards :).

Yes I don't. I wasn't making a blanket statement and saying all high resolutions don't need aa, I was saying I don't notice them.

ON TAKING SCREENSHOTS OF MLAA IN ACTION if you are viewing screenshots you've taken on your own computer, if you leave MLAA turned on, it will be working in Windows Photo Viewer, i.e., MLAA turned on in the driver will filter images displayed in Windows Photo Viewer. However, if you turn off MLAA in the control panel, you will notice it goes away on your screenshot. So when you show them to the world, we cannot see the MLAA in the screenshot.

Here is what you can do to show what MLAA looks like on a screenshot to the world.

Turn on MLAA in the driver

Open the screenshot in Windows Photo Viewer. Use the Sniping tool to cut out a screenshot of that image. Save it, and there you go, an MLAA screenshot you can save with the world. To check it, turn off MLAA and you'll see that the IQ of MLAA still shows in the image.

This works on ANY image you have. Windows Photo Viewer will filter it with MLAA if MLAA is turned on in the driver. Open a photo or screeshot or anything and try it out yourself, turn MLAA off and look at the photo/screenshot, then turn MLAA on in the driver and open the same photo/screenshot again in Windows Photo Viewer.

I found this out by accident too, and have found it matches what I see in game 100%.

So does it only do it on pictures in photo viewer or does it do it on other stuff/other apps? Seems kind of nifty.

I don't use Windows Photo Viewer I use iview and it has been correctly displaying the LACK of MLAA in screenshots. Except Stalker. I'm not sure about that one.

Edit: And thanks Brent I will be trying that asap. Expect screenshot updates shortly.

Erm, "sniping" tool? I can't seem to find that, or anything to cut/copy the image out of there.
