MLAA is a game changer.

Oh of course my mind is all drifty today, I was trying to find it in the program. :p

Thanks.

requiem99 do you have Street Fighter 4? I wonder how it will look with MLAA and if there is any input lag. I have tried 8xSSAA and there are still jaggies.

I do. Downloading on steam now, should be done in a few minutes and I'll see if I can make this screenshot haxing work out.

You using the TrSSAA with nVidia card? or SSAA in ATI?

If you using TrSSAA, the alias will still be there.. I hate to say this, but nVidia's AA still need to be workout more..

I have tried to use SSAA in ATI on SF4, the graphic is quite blur... Don't really like it, but it does get rid of all the possible alias...

Put a screenshot in the OP. Can you tell a difference? I did not use "snipping tool" method as suggested by Brent for this game because I can't tell a difference for that versus CTRL-PRNTSCRN and paste into mspaint then convert. Either way seems to yield same results. As keen as I am on MLAA, I'm not at all keen on these methods of displaying it in screenshots. Very ambiguous.

This is with the game maxed out (4xAA) with no "art" aftereffects enabled.

And I've been trying to observe the "MLAA applied to screenshots" Brent has been talking about but I can't seem to see it. Regardless of MLAA setting after the screenshot is taken, it stays the way it was when I created it, either MLAA on or off, depending on whether it managed to get it in the screenshot originally. MLAA on/off does nothing to change the quality in Windows Photo Viewer for me. Absolutely nothing.

I'm not saying that this is what is happening, I'm saying that this is what I have observed after hours of trying to reproduce the behavior Brent has described. I can't.

when using the program it should create a second file with _MLAA at the end of the file name. if that fails then the problems you :p

the one thats MLAA only its not working. you can obviously tell by looking at the image. notice in the 4xAA + MLAA the Fraps fps icon is completely effed up. but the one thats suppose to be MLAA(im guessing?) the fraps logo's perfectly normal.

I never used the conversion program, and the messed up fraps icon (lower left) is supposed to have MLAA (might be only AA), the other doesn't have any AA... as they are labeled....

Edit: maybe I don't understand MLAA, I thought MLAA worked on top of regular AA. Or does it completely replace all previous AA methods during actual usage? Can MSAA work alongside MLAA?

Oh, and MLAA in Mass Effect is TREMENDOUS. A few (actually cool looking) artifacts in conjunction with certain shaders, but most of these go away if you turn off Film Grain. Beautiful, beautiful game, either way. I've beaten it 5 or 6 times but I'm hooked again already, because I get to "WOW" at every scene again. Can't help but love MLAA. <3

You can tell that MLAA is on in the stalker screencap you posted in the OP becasue the fraps counter is rounded. Interesting. I'll have to experiment with some screenshots later... see what I can get.

Exactly my reaction. I don't claim to know why it happened that way, or even to understand the result that has been displayed... I'm merely posting what I'm seeing. I -think- most of my games are showing MLAA properly in screenshots without using Brent's method. Perhaps I'll use the fraps counter to test that, since it seems to be a constant.

It must depend on what stage the game takes the screenshots from. The Stalker shot was taken using the game's own screenshot method with fraps on (but I didn't use fraps to take it). Using Dragon Age's screenshot method, it does not display MLAA. Neither does FRAPS ss method in Dragon Age. Windows Photo Viewer doesn't affect it.

I've sussed it. Any game that can CTRL-PRNTSCRN to the clipboard seems to work just fine, or any game that takes screenshots using that method. About to update with a new SFIV screen that clearly shows (via FRAPS counter) that MLAA is enabled.

I finally got a screen shot of MLAA in SC2. Check out this Nexus!
MLAASC2.png

Quite enjoyable :) MLAA on the left, none on the right

EDIT- it looks a TON more washed out and oversaturated in the uploaded version- it looks much better in the screen cap. Must have been compressed some in the upload process or something.

Very nice! Just updated again with Flatout UC screens. More games coming up! :D

I would say the best thing about MLAA is how it adds "balance" to any given scene. It doesn't necessarily improve any one specific thing, but it adds balance and overall increases the quality of the final product tremendously. It's like HDR vs non-HDR, or even AA vs non-AA. I really think its that big.

your links are a bit messed up for the pics in the OP- they're all thumbs and mashed together ;-)
Rainbow 6 Vegas looks awesome though.

Erm they show up properly for me. Thumbnails that are links leading to imgshack where you can click to see full size. Anyone else having a problem?

Edit: I got 2 outside confirmations from chat that they are showing up properly. I think its you.

Thanks for the SF4 sceenies requiem99! The first 2 SF4 shots looks gorgeous. Doesn't seem to go well with the posterization filter. Can you take one more with the Ink filter?

Dragon Age pics added sorry they're not awesome and don't really show MLAA really well I'm much too drunk to be doing this but hey its a labor of love. I've dissed ATI for years with good reason but finally I have something to brag about and I'm telling EVERYONE. All my friends who see these pics are floored, so I know I'm not crazy to be tickled by this awesome new tech. I LOVE IT. :)

nice screens. also requiem if you want to do comparision EG same scene with and without MLAA you might want to check out http://screenshotcomparison.com/ as a host. allows you to post both images. then you click the image and it switch between them. gives you a much more accurate view on whats different from the other image.

(yes i know its specifically for movies but will work just as well for anything else)

Awesome, thanks!! Looks soo much better with the Ink! :D
Come on NV, lets see your version of MLAA!

nvidia doesnt need to. they will just throw more money at developers to make sure only nvidia cards are supported when it comes to AA. watch it will happen. anytime AMD/ATI comes out with something they create a half ass work around.

eyefinity, you get nvidia surround that requires dual cards. yes it supports triple dvi but you have to spend 600+ dollars for that.

"oh we created this bad ass architecture but hey we cant compete with ATI so lets neuter the hell out of the card so we can compete. yeah because we spent millions of dollars advertising all these great features that fermi has but no we cant beat ATI so get rid of em!"

back on point, i doubt we will see MLAA on nvidia even though MLAA is open source and is basically free to use if nvidia wanted to but again doubt they will. they will just pull the "but our cards can run 16xQ AA we dont need no stinking MLAA." while the ATI cards running MLAA and the game completely maxed out at 60fps constant. watch you heard it right here. it will happen. because nvidia is predictable.

MLAA is good for games that don't support AA at all, but IMHO MSAA + transparency is a superior AA method for image quality and runs about the same speed from what I can see.

Wow... that's pretty much of a rant there man :p
Anyway I like what AMD is doing with MLAA in it's early incarnation so far.

But like you said... NV is predicable so we may not see such a feature from in drivers... instead they will get developers to code it as a game feature and lock it out from AMD cards (ala Batman:AA) and it will be superior to anything AMD does with MLAA because it will take note of HUDs, text and stuff so those things don't get blurred and at the same time no input lag whatsoever!

You're right, but it's still good to have options.

Agreed. I just want this badly for games that don't support MSAA.

would it be possible to get screens of Badco2 in multiplayer on Atacama Desert map? Lots of smoke and sand in that one with varied terrain.

honestly if your praising the MLAA, what does it matter where it comes from? But thx anyways I guess.

It was just a dig at a game/series I've come to despise over the years. If I had a copy laying around I would take some screens for you.

i just got a 6870, but haven't yet tried out mlaa.
i'm not home right now to try it, but i have a question about it.

can i choose which games i want to enable it for? or is it a global settings such as always on or always off for everything?

Its global, but its easy to turn on or off- I just have a profile with it on and another with it off. All I have to do is select a profile before I boot up a game.
