Minecraft

Due to the length of this thread, and since the useful information is so widespread in it, I've created a new thread for the hardcraft community... its not just a minecraft thread anymore its our thread :)

http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1594411

Ill try to keep all the useful info on it, update the maps now n then, and whatever else needs to be done.

My friend is now working on a digital mob counter to go with TazRunner's giant mob trap and item harvesting machine.

YouTube videos:

Giant mob trap and item harvesting machine 2000 items per hour

Here's a photo of a copy of the counter on their "workbench" area:

[H]ardcraft needs an update! 1.4 out today, whoo!

Changelog:

Code:
Minecraft Beta 1.4

* Added tameable wolves
* Added cookies
* Sleeping in a bed now resets your spawn position
* New Minecraft logo
* Holding shift while climbing will hang on to the ladder
* Spiders will no longer trample crops
* Lots and lots of infrastructure for Statistics lists and Achievements

If you want to log in to hardcraft, you can't update to 1.4. The server will be updated but not for a few days.

If you don't want to update, make sure you have the new client from minecraft.net. It gives you the option of updating or not. You'll have to click "not now" until the server is updated.

If you accidentally updated, you can get the files that need to be replaced from here:
http://www.mediafire.com/?7514sumhj2rxh8z
I uploaded those files for someone else. You overwrite your current files in this directory:
%appdata%\.minecraft

The bed thing is going to be annoying if it applys to MP, if I'm in a tunnel and it gets dark I sleep there, I don't want to spawn down in a cave somewhere if I die..

If you're in a tunnel what does it matter if it's daytime or nighttime? Just keep spelunking until it's daytime again then head back to your "base."

Other people on the server bro. Everyone has to get in a bed for the time of day to change. Even people underground digging. Anyone who doesn't want to use a bed will have to log out, wait for the others to change the time, then log back in. Or beds will just be useless in MP because no one will ever be right next to their spawn.

I hate when people try to sleep in my server. the spawn had a nice town next to it, and every other week the spawn is in the middle of nowhere because of a sleeper.

didn't know they had performance mods, and the crashing is why bukkit is taking so long to update.. I need to check that tho...

1.5 added more bugs then features lol

What mods are people implementing these days? I quit awhile back but now feel like getting back into it. Back then we used hMod exclusively but it seems that it's no longer in development. Anyone have a list of mods they use on their server/prefer?

Yeah, hmod more or less died. I believe that someone picked it back up but it, but bukkit has pretty much replaced it.

As for mods, I'm running the following on Bukkit for 1.5_1:

WorldEdit (awesome plugin... very powerful)
Permissions [Pheonix]
Neither Gate
Minecart boosters
Pistonmod
Mob Blacklist (creates a blacklist/whitelist of mobs that can and can't spawn... useful for creepers)

well, for hardcraft, I try to add as many mods as I can that don't make the game easier. features, and extra things you can make, red stone oriented machines, things like that.

gates that go up n down, bridges that retract, things like that I like.

oh and we use dynamic map, that's useful and fun to watch people

We could use a faster system im finding... i logged into an old server i played on, it was a bit faster it seemed...

depends on what merits the speed, across the net I've looked and looked yet have come across not a single answer on what minecraft thrives on.

Memory hog? TONS of the minecraft hosting services offer very low memory.

Processor? So far from monitoring while some play, 10% of my current processor (fairly weak one) per active player seems to be about average. 10% at idle.

Internet connection? The original Hardcraft, far far more extensive then current, yet was run on a internet connection 1/3 of the current. It was able to run just fine to about 10 players.

if I could be told what would make our server run at it's best performance I would gladly do my best to correct it. Except pay for the service, to come anywhere close to what the system holds, would be far more then anyone here would be willing to pay.

PS forgot to ask, as admin, which I am trying to fix any issues and have not a player complain, define faster? With so many different ways to measure that, I wouldn't even be able to know where to start.

I've not noticed any problems with Hardcraft and it's speed. It's almost always very quick for me. Occasionally I'll have blocks lag when destroying them. But nothing extreme at all. Nothing even really worth mentioning.

Thanks for the info! Got Bukkit working on my server as well as a few other plugins. As far as I understand it, Minecarts can be boosted on its own now or do I need a plugin to have them automatically powered?

Also, any hi-res texture packs or fun texture packs you recommend?

MC has powered tracks that boost minecarts now, you just have to have them powered to function, not a huge deal tho.

Misa's realism pack is popular I know.

good luck with bukkit and the new version, I know it's in test only phases, hope you don't get any headache from it. :)

Does anyone know the name of that mod that generates a google earth style map? It was on the server I previously played on, but now thats closed, so I wan't to include it on my own server.

Also, damn them changing the redstone textures. The texture pack I had just made is now broken. :D

yeah, minecraft now has booster tracks but they only accelerate you a few blocks... the bukkit booster plugin accelerates you 32 blocks (I believe).

As for hi-res packs... I've used a bunch, but I finally settled on bordercraft. It's a really neat borderlands style TP... 32x I think. The textures are beautiful, but I've noticed that redstone circuits don't display properly... so hopefully the author fixes that soon. I tried fixing it on my own, but couldn't get it working.

PS. make sure you use the new MCPatcher 2.0 beta for 1.5 texture packs. The old one crashes minecraft

I wish HD texture packs became supported by default. Its why I did mine in 16x16 (might do some high res versions later), so I could go to the menu, change packs around and return to test it, rather then patching the game every time. I can't see how it would become any more complicated, and by the size of the file it would be quite obvious the size of textures being used. Twice the size, thats 32x32, 4 times the size 64x64 etc.

That looks awesome. I need to get a new GPU sorted really soon: I got minecraft two weeks ago because my GTX280 died, and I'm running on an old X800XL now. I still wanted to game, but I can't even play MC at half my monitor's native res without getting huge slowdowns at low-medium settings.

I tried Dokucraft and some nice cel-shaded packs, and although I'm not much of a japanese-fellating tit I do like dokucraft now I'm used to it.

use this patcher instead of the old one.

https://github.com/downloads/pclewis/mcpatcher/mcpatcher-2.0.0-beta4.exe

It patches the minecraft.jar to use HD packs (up to 256x256) through minecrafts default texture pack browser (so you can change them on the fly). You no longer have to patch it everytime you want to change it.

Dokucraft looks interesting. The Okami one made it look the best imo. I'm not a huge fan of cell shading, but it's a good fit for minecraft.

I tried some other high res packs and while the texture quality was great, it always ends up looking a little weird on perfectly square blocks.

It looks Notch has plans to release the source code to modders, hopefully releasing the sourcecode will allow for things like high resolution textures, flying and better netcode to get implemented in the game. I would be interested to just look at the sourcecode to see how he does some things.link

Thats better! I can do a proper version of things now! Will probably go with 128x128 (i've only had 64x64 pacs before, i'm not sure how much of a difference it will actually make with the low poly feel of the game). It was such a pain in the ass before having to break a feature of the game to make something that should work by default :(

Now if they would stop moving the tiles within the texture file! :D
