Tree farm is super handy. I keep a chest of saplings and axes and if I ever need wood I just cut down everything inside and then replant. This way I dont have to worry about baddies getting me and it keeps the trees nicely in rows.

As for the shaft. I debated between ladders and stairs. If I went with ladders I would have to put in glass safety levels in case I fell and since I am lazy deciding against that. At the time I also did not have a lot of wood but a TON of stone. I tried using the crafted stairs but since the way the autodirection works, they turn out broken and not useful in shaft corners. so instead there are handmade stairs. I use 1 cobblestone and then 1 halfblock so you just have to run up them. The only real PITA is if you fall....instadeath.

Something else I did which made my life easy. As soon as I could I built a compass then made a lighted/stone path from my base to the spawn. I think I am going to make my first tracks and cart to go along it so I dont have to run the path.

Edit: I am also in the process of cleaning up the blocks. I originally made things quickly in cobblestone and now I Am going back using wood and processed stone. I think it looks a little cleaner.

You can add a pool of water to the bottom of your mineshaft to act as a safety against dying if you fall.

ohhh I did not even think about that. I think I am going to do that.

Now I just wish I had more iron for tracks.

I died three times today in the same cave. And there aren't even any diamond deposits in the damn place.

Tonight my plan is to fortify my spawn point and build a bridge back to the main castle - hopefully that way whenever I die, I don't immediately die another 3 or 4 times trying to get back home...

Then I gotta change out all my staircases to use actual stairs instead of jumping up all those blocks.

Then I'll be back to digging the giganti-mine... :D

Is there any particular indicators ore or a dungeon-esque cave occurs based on the surrounding land or rock type? Is the game that complex or is it truly random?

I read about how he generates it and while random it has a procedure to the madness that way it creates a believable terrain and underground.

By dungeon I assume you mean the mob spawn cages where you can find extra loot. There is no way to know exactly where they are but you are going to find them in caves of course. You will find a lot of cave entrances from the surface but there are just as many underground that could be extremely small or very large.

Sadly, the mossy stone blocks are more valuable than the treasure within the chests, besides the elusive apple.

Just got the game last night and I hate that I enjoy it this much.

A few questions - is there a way to specify a respawn point? I built up a mud stockade on some random mountain peak and when I died (some spiky thing blew up? - wtf is that about?) I respawned me and I forgot where I was calling home base from that location. So I had to start a new base.

It also took me a bit to realize I could make wood picks but now I am currently whistling while I burrow a hole in some spot from base 2.0 (still can find base 1.0).

Oh, and what can I do for getting more health? Stabbing cows with a sword doesn't seem to generate anything. I get very low random drops on pork. Can I coral some pigs and make them generate more pigs?

You can't respecify a spawn point without an external program.

You can make a farm, to get wheat, and that can be made into bread, which heals you 2.5 hearts.

By the way, minecarts are AWESOME. I build a little mini base deep inside a cave I build, then I setup a minecart track system that connects my main base with that. Its amazingly fun to ride up and down.

We should setup a [H] Server for all hardforum members to get on and play together. Any volunteers? :)

The problem I see with setting up a server which fairly random people have access to is that there will inevitably be a griefer who just levels the place for "fun".

That's what nightly backups are for.

I've wanted to set a [H] server up, but I don't have an extra machine available to run it on.

I'd volunteer, but i don't know that my connection would hold up to any more than a handful of people :(

Just wondering what you guys use to take screenshots in the game. Fraps or something else? I don't think it has any built in screenshot ability.

And also wondering does it save maps locally at all? I looked around a bit but couldn't see any place it may have been storing the info.

Built a really tall stack of single blocks to get to the top of the world so I knew how tall I could go...and when it turned night out it was pretty neat to see what it looked like. Basically one lit area in a span of mostly dark.

I think the print screen button works but you need to copy the capture into paint/photoshop/whatever. I just use fraps since I can take a bunch at once.

Saves are located in (Win 7):
C:\Users\*USERNAME*\AppData\Roaming\.minecraft\saves

I get better fps while recording in a 32 player tf2 server at 1920x1080 then I do in Minecraft (SP)...I don't get it

Open up the start menu and type %appdata% and hit enter to get there much faster.

Have you tried the exe client? Runs a BIT better than it dose inside a browser.

You can protect areas and make it unchangeable. I coulnt tell you how it works but after playing on many servers and playing around i quickly found this out.

except no

notch has said he is aware of performance issues in the engine and he'll get around to fixing them

Honestly its both. Notch needs to fix his performance issues but it will always perform shitty for what it is because its java.

To be a little more in depth, his implementation of Java is severely limited.

Well I just got done dying and making another run in this pretty deep cave.

I wasn't aware to mine gold you needed an iron pickaxe... thankfully the greenies killed me and all my iron ore I got done mining disappeared (got lost going to the main base from the spawn point). Regardless I found a load of gold.. three diamonds... 70 red dust samples.... and more iron. I got lost on the way back out, but made it alive

I snapped this photo of this floating island I cooped earlier. I am converting the ground to glass. I had to build a fairly precarious ledge from an outcropping to get there.

java is hardly as slow as it used to be, and the same can be said for cpus.

algorithm / methods used will likely become a problem far before java.

minecraft was pretty solidly gpu bound for a while since there was no culling. it just drew all the blocks infront of you, which probably amounted to millions upon millions of triangles and other problems thanks to horrific amounts of overdraw.

who knew cubes could be so expensive?

So I have this ginormous cave system underneath right where I spawned (and subsequently built my little base). I've been clearing out the rivers and getting crazy amounts of iron (almost 130 after a couple hours). Being dumb I was mining an iron underneath me and poof, fall into a dark room.

You can guess what I heard next..

performance issue for what... minecraft ?!?

dear god

I dont know if this is sarcastic or you just dont know but minecraft runs like shit.

Try running it on lower end machines, the performance is really really bad for what it is.

I have a laptop that runs wow ok yet cant run minecraft.

classic! same shit happened to me... but fell into lava.

There doesn't appear to be any intelligent culling of blocks, I tried the free singleplayer, used a massive map, built a small house on a hill and went inside and the frame rate was still awful, so it's clearly not culling out blocks you can't see, or at least not doing a very good job of it.
