[Microsoft] Windows 8 for $14.99

Not sure if this has been posted as far as clean installs go but...

In Windows 8, go to Control Panel and then Recovery. In there is an option to create a recovery drive. I have not played with this yet but the description says, "Create a recovery drive to refresh or reset your PC..."

Looks like this will create a recovery drive using USB media but I'm not sure to what extent of cleanliness the installation is. It looks like if you pick the Reset option it will then wipe out everything and do a fresh install.

Might be useful for creating 'install' media for this $15 upgrade.

From what I've read it'll do a completely clean install but you can actually use a command prompt command to manually overwrite the stock image (say, after you've installed drivers), pretty useful either way if you can't get the media any other way and/or don't run other image backup software.

Most likely this depends if the system had 7 installed on it OEM or not. Systems that ship with Windows have the Windows license burned in to the BIOS/UEFI. Windows knows how to look for that. So likely if you install Windows 8 on a system with an OEM Windows license already on it, it is happy. If you have a custom build, with the license separate, it'll probably want the key.

I have a custome built PC ... I installed win8 on a fresh SSD drive ... only key it asked was the product key for Win8.

I think if you run the upgrade ... it will ask for a previous version key (like all winOS upgrade). But if you run a new install it won't.

I give up! I tried with 3 different computers, 3 different emails, 2 browsers. No way around it. Either the next page asks for a Windows 7 key or it tells me I'm not eligible. Maybe it's because i'm from Canada! ;-)

Also since this deal is being abused by some people, their is no promise it will even work tomorrow. MS could close up the loop hole at any point. No one knows if they are purposely leaving it open because they know the tech savvy are fairly adverse to the changes in windows 8.

Yeah from the looks of it nearly every scumbag on ebay.

I have a toshiba laptop laying around that I upgraded saturday night just to check out windows 8. Everything was straight forward with the upgrade. The laptop was running windows 7 hacked and when it upgraded to windows 8 it only asked for the win 8 key. Upgrade worked great and everything is fine.
I paid with paypal, installed with the ISO image burnt to a dvd.

Has anyone noticed if it matters much if you do the purchase/download on a system other than the one you plan to install it on? I want the 64bit but this system is running 32. I have a dell with the 64bit release preview and it seems it'll let me buy it there which would be easier than installing the x64 RP on a spare drive for this system, but I wasn't sure if some of the system info was gathered during purchase for activation purposes or something. I recall hearing each iso hash it's own unique hash so I figured they may be adding some customization into each image or some such.

Thanks! :)

I used the same 64-bit DVD I burned with the first machine to install on my second machine but of course the disk wouldn't work for my wife's 32-bit laptop so I had to download that version too with the assistance. I now have both versions burned.

hey there is another deal if you have win 8 pro where microsoft will give the pro pack or media center for free its a $69.99 value. you just give them your email address and they email you the cdkey and you just update your version of windows.

Where do you go for this? Thanks.

What model # of a PC did you use on the registration?

This was the info I gave them and everything worked fine. I wiped out my Windows 7 install and then loaded Windows 8 using nothing more than the key they gave me and this thread.

How long does it take to the get the key, or do they email it? my paypal account got charge but the Microsoft upgrade assistance didn't show anything once I made the payment. Just a blank screen :|

I used a credit card instead of paypal and had the key immediately. It was in the upgrade advisor after paying.

Can you install this copy on multiple machines?

No, the activation is pretty stringent unlike the good 'ol Windows 7 days where you had something like 5 activations per key. Thank all the ebay scammers for ruining the party with their selling the same key to 5 different people crap.

I did just go through an experience changing motherboards after having already installed Win8 a few days prior, after getting the new mobo installed I got "Sorry this activation key is already in use on another PC" - not surprising since they do tend to tie the key to the mobo but ended up having to call the 800 number and follow a bunch of automated prompts entering various codes but after about 5 min I got it re-keyed and re-activated. I think they'll only let you do that one time, and I think it might even invalidate the installation for the previous motherboard.

Still a decent enough hassle that you need to be careful about activation, that you settle on your PC configuration before doing so.

This was the same thing I have gotten on windows 7 every time I changed hardware for the last 2 years.. The only once thing has to be BS otherwise alot of us would be stuck buying new OS's several times a year.. I rarely keep the same mobo for more then a few months & some of the other hardware I am even worse about changing.. Especially the video cards & SSD's both uf which can cause the need to re-activate windows.

I see, I guess my experience with Win7 activations was different because I was using Technet keys from my own paid account, come to think of it. Those let you have multiple acts per key or at least they used to. There again ebay resellers threw a wet blanket on Technet.

Anyway good to know.

With Windows 7 at least, there was no difference between Technet keys and Retail keys, in terms of activation. Both activated 10 times before you had to make up (or legitimately explain) your reason for installing it again. OEM/Upgrade with XP, Vista and Windows 7 got a little funky.

Hello jeff brett,

You submitted an order in the amount of $39.99 USD to Arvato Digital Services.

I used paypal for the digital download , , they sure charged me alright , but it said transaction failed , typical bullshit from microsoft , does not matter if it was a third party they go through , this is the first time i have had to do a dispute through paypal on ordering on the net

On the same boat call Microsoft and they gave me the "me know nothing" excuse. They just said to call paypal which I did and they setup a claim etc to get the money back

I did it twice so i have have 80$ coming out of my account , thinking about cancelling wells fargo account tomm--will have to sue them for the bounced charges--thats how pissed i am

Hello H Forum...sorry for getting to the party late...but I have a few questions regarding this purchase

1. Is this an OEM key? AKA, its permanently tied to your motherboard? GPU/HDD upgrades should have no problems, right?

2. Are there any activation limits?

3. Can I do a completely fresh install of windows 8? Or does this require windows 7 to be installed beforehand?

Thanks in advanced!

You're going to sue them? Really? Because you are piss poor and don't have enough money in your account to cover $80 yet you decided to try to pull the scam listed in the original post?!? Really? Perhaps instead of trying to buy $15 Win 8 upgrades you should worry about better budgeting.

Frankly I find you to be an idiot. Any time someone doesn't like how a purchase went or something similar that truly isn't a life or death thing the first thing out of their mouth is... "I'm going to sue!" And we wonder why America is turning into a shithole.

Worked for me thanks for the heads up, I was charged the $14.99 and I am in the process of downloading now, I received the code just as stated no issues.

The only way to get charged is to check the accept box then click submit. So not only did you fuck up and not enter the promo code you did it twice. Good luck suing its not like you have to tick a checkbox agreeing to terms and then submit the order oh wait...

LOL-- Just pissed and was about to change banks anyway , have moved across the country. If i remove all MY funds from the wells account then when the boggus paypal fees comes through the account will bounce--who should be responsible for such --me ? Guess as the law goes i should have funds to cover this being im the one that made the transaction , does not matter if they were honest or it did not, go through as it should ! So t the gentleman that called me a idiot - your right , i will just wait 30 days to get my money back like most that get shafted in the usa with very little say so. If a business did that here , i could atleast get a free meal or big discount on a product from them , microsoft is screw u

Ok after i got all the data i wanted to save backed up , I burned the win 8 iso per upgrade software. Booted into the dvd. Deleted the 4 partitions on HP laptop, and created just one. Installed it clean with no old Win 7 OS. Before installing, it did ask me for the Win 8 Key. I entered that and was good to go.

Installed Start is Back and is good. Now if there is a way to change the looks of the log on/off screens. The simplicity of just a solid color looks soo plain. I can imagine a stripped out Win 8 would be pretty awesome , strip it of its start menu and I can imagine it being alot better than 7.

Open the Metro UI and click on your name and go to 'Change account picture" You can customize everything from there

Too funny -had to laugh at that . When i purchased this through paypal , at the end it said transaction cancelled , i did the same thing again thinking of course as it said CANCELLED ! Both times said the same thing yet i was charged , so u know

Thanks! In for 2 (at least for the moment) Haven't used it but what the hell!

When i called microsoft it seems the paypal is a broken link right now-LOOL--good thing to know , right

Thank you. It helps. I still kinda don't like some of the screens, but I suppose they are simplistic to help minimize resource usage.

My thoughts are Win7 is still great, Win8 is an alternative. But over time, once we learn more about the OS and tweaks, as well as Microsoft updates, it will get better.
