Mass Effect: Andromeda

I'm stoked.

It likely won't matter for this but my Shepherd did live at the end of 3. It was possible.

It was a major PITA to be sure but I was the beneficiary of having watched a bunch of discussions in threads like we had here ahead of time and played and planned accordingly. You had to go online and perform every so often and some other things like that. I do hope I don't see that kind of concept again for this.

I have all my saves from the first three games. I wouldn't be halfway surprised if they have the "load previous save" for the sake of universe continuity but I don't know for sure. It would be a nice touch if they did.

the problem with the Mako in ME1 was that most of the planets you explored were lifeless and had the same generic layout...they needed to either make the planets more diverse and full of life or cut back on the number of explorable planets...it felt like No Man's Sky :D

It should have. That terrain looked procedurally generated. There were a couple planets that were different like Eletania and one with super jagged rocks and a lot of dust. Another standout was one of the snow covered ones. For the most part though, it was the same rocky planets with different colored lighting and backgrounds. Some were spectacular but eventually it all felt like the same monotonous chore.

There was an early comment made by the devs to do just that. I wouldn't at all be surprised if we had the option but I doubt it would do more than show us "our" Shepard and switch to the appropriate gender dialog to reflect that. I'm almost positive that Shepard and crew will have some sort of cameo or references, but I doubt anything will be overly specific given the scope of various choices and the variables involved.

I agree.

Broadly speaking, I expect Shepherd to be a James T. Kirk type icon and legend...living or otherwise. (Male or female)

How far after the events of first three games is this one?

This could be a repeat of Dragon Age 1's Warden character. By the time part 3 rolled around "The Warden" is this referred to icon and legend even though we never really see or hear anything about that character ever again. It was kept vague and generalized just like you're talking about here.

I definitely expect cameos of characters from the previous games.

There is no specific time frame cited for this game so far. With FTL in the Mass Effect universe, with or without a Mass Effect relay as a booster, travel to the Andromeda Galaxy would have taken decades if not centuries.

Indeed. Andromeda being 2.573 x 10^6 light years away would make for a very long trip, even with FTL. We never got any kind of speed to go with Mass Relay travel or even how fast a ship can go while generating their own Mass Effect field. There are hints that they could top out between 12 and 15 light years a day. Theoretically that would mean approximately 470 years of travel time. If the ship shown in the trailer is some sort of experimental ship that could go as fast as the Reapers (30 light years a day), that would decrease total travel time to 235 years. But it is also stated that a ship requires equal deceleration time to acceleration time, which complicates the problem.

This is probably the most hyped I've ever been for a game... Even though that trailer was trash.
I'm going to pre-order the hell out of this and play it start to finish even if it gets reviewed as the worst game in history.

Did I mention that trailer sucked? Like, everything about it.

Can't wait to crush this game with my 7700K + 1080 Ti setup next year.

It wasn't a trailer. It was a demonstration of the game engine: showing both a playable segment and a cutscene. A trailer won't arrive until apparently November 7th as mentioned. This was clearly designed to NOT show any story elements, at least not any story elements that make sense out of context.

Well it shows a lot of janky animations, a few ugly NPCs, some awkward dialog, etc.
Nothing looks good here except the technical side of the graphics.

I never played DA:I but I see some people comparing this trailer to the worst aspects of that game.

I don't think even the technical side looks that good.

we must have been watching a different video...I thought it looked fantastic...the atmosphere, environment, technology etc totally fit the Mass Effect universe and look like a natural evolution from the previous trilogy...plus they're using the Frostbite engine which should be amazing...imagine a world inhabited by all the different alien factions and world building of the previous trilogy built into this new engine...the possibilities are off the charts...bring back Sovereign!...his speech at the end of ME1 was one of the best moments in gaming history!

I am looking forward to the game but I agree this has to be one of the worst game "tech" videos I have ever seen!

So, how many of you guys saying the tech demo sucked watched it on a 4K display?

Maybe it loses something in the translation to Youtube size.

It looks an awful lot like the original Mass Effect to me. Reminded me of the part where you visit a Prothean ruin on Ilos near the end of the game.
I don't think it looks like Ilos at all. Instead it could be a dungeon in DA:I and I wouldn't be surprised at all.

Is the male Ryder voiced by Nolan North? It sounds like North to me, I'm 95% sure it's him.

The extra resolution will add some improvement, but won't be as noticeable as the HDR, which won't be represented well with YouTube's compression. I play at 4k on PC and upconverted to 4k on Console, so I've gotten used to it. I have yet to notice a big difference in 4k Youtube videos outside the fact I could play them full screen without it being a fuzzy mess.

Casey Hudson did make a comment about how many of the things they wanted to do in the first ME had to be cut or scaled back due to hardware restrictions at the time. It was his hope they might be realized in this iteration. I think some of the "open world exploration" they hoped to have in ME will look more like what they wished they could do back then.

is HDR something that needs to be natively put into a movie or game?...or does an HDR capable screen just 'upconvert' it to HDR...meaning will older Blu-ray's etc look better on an HDR capable TV?

HDR is a rendering technique that a movie / game has to to be made with, and can only be seen on TV's that support the technology. This has been around for cameras for a while now, but TV's have only had the break through for the last year or two (started on the high end models and is now trickling down). It does make a noticeable difference, but the number of titles to use it are still very small. Sony is forward thinking with this feature, which just makes it more surprising the PS4 Pro will not have a UHD Player.

I have a dedicated monitor (1920 x 1200) for PC gaming separate from my 55" plasma for TV/Blu-ray watching...I'm going to upgrade my plasma within the next year with a 4K OLED with HDR and am wondering if that won't be better for gaming going forward with the new PS4 Pro or Xbox Scorpio...

Maybe I'm in it, maybe I'm not. I could tell you, but then I'd have to kill you.

I'm gonna play the hell outta this game. Then, I'll go back and replay the first 3 for the 50th time, and replay ME4 a dozen more times... and so on... until ME5 is here.

Deal with it, bitches!

Won't buy it for $60 but I'll grab it on sale like the other games. Looks like a decent continuation of the franchise.

4k OLED, nice.

Sounds like the Scorpio will be the more powerful of the two, plus have a UHD Player, but we won't know anything for sure until they are both out, which won't be for a couple months for PS4 and another year for the Xbox. I'm primarily PC, but what little console library I have is for the PS4. Consequently I'll probably get the Pro regardless. I'll just be pissed if for the Scorpio's release, Sony decides to come out with a Pro SE with a UHD Player and more memory or some sheeet.

*drops money on 1080 right when it comes out*

"Ehh, this AAA game is totally not worth $60, even if I played and enjoyed the previous games"

I bought a 1080 for the Vive. Just because I bought a $700 video card doesn't mean I have unlimited money, I used previous savings for a 1080 and a Vive. Not that I have to justify my purchasing decisions to you at all.

I liked the other games but none of them were worth $60 in my opinion, and thus I didn't pay $60 for them. Same will likely apply here.

What point are you trying to make?

Jesus, you have a Vive too? Didn't even notice that. So did you even buy any VR games? Those games aren't worth anything remotely close to what they're charging. And you're going to come in here and claim the new Mass Effect game and its past blockbuster-fucking-hit games weren't worth $60?

To each his own. I could maybe see some people just not liking Mass Effect for whatever reason.

Now I'm curious, though. If none of the Mass Effect games were not worth $60 to him, what games are?

Are you trolling? Who the fuck are you to tell me which games are and aren't worth the money to me?

I'm sorry that in your mind I shit all over your precious franchise because I didn't think any of those games are worth $60. Jesus christ.

I did like the Mass Effect games. I played all of them. However, I didn't pay $60 for any of them and frankly if I had, I probably would have been a bit disappointed. The ending to ME3 was total shit, and honestly most of ME1 I had to slog through...ME2 and 3 improved on the mechanics significantly.

As for games that I think are worth $60...very few. I think I paid $60 for ArmA 3 and I have put 300+ hours into that. Same with Skyrim. Most games, even if I buy them on release, I can get for cheaper anyway via pre-order deals or cdkeys.com

to each his own but I love the ME franchise...even ME3 and it's slightly disappointing ending...the ending was disappointing to me only because your choices throughout the trilogy didn't really seem to have any effect...but overall the world building, characters, planets and atmosphere are amazing and one of the best space games I've ever played

IMO, the Mass Effect games were compelling because of the story but were hampered by lots of issues, too. The first one was especially clunky and had tons of time-wasting filler. I can fully understand someone who isn't into Sci-Fi (or likes real shooters) not digging the series.
It's one of those game series' where it's easy to overlook a lot of faults because of the storytelling. I did. I played through all 3 more than once, but I'll readily admit that there is a fair amount of slogging in all of them. If anything, the 3rd was easily the best game of the bunch. Had the ending been better (and the stupid MP/app requirement disappeared sooner) I think people would have fonder memories of it.

I'm pumped for the new one based on Sony's footage. Hopefully it isn't just a clumsy Tomb Raider in space.

Yeah, for me it was, I got through each of them once and that was enough for me. I am big into sci-fi, so mainly I was just interested in the story - the gameplay itself was meh for a lot of the trilogy IMO.

The first game is still my favorite to this day. If they had another story planet in the middle instead of trying to fill in with exploration that didn't even come close to their vision for it, I think it would have been a masterpiece. Otherwise, replacing the exploration with open world exploration filled with side quests of a Mankind Divided quality. Either would work for me. ME2 was a good game, many even feel it was the best of the series. ME3 was good until the end. The ending was so incredibly tacked on and disconnected from the rest of the game / story it ruined any desire to reply any of the trilogy for me. It made me feel like everything I had done for any of the other races, in any of the games, was for nothing. Trapped in a single star system, the only realistic result would have been a war for resources just to survive. I felt trolled for caring over the course of 3 games. First time I'd ever been mad at Bioware.

For me, the worst thing about Mass Effect 3 wasn't even the ending. I hated the process of having to procure those stupid war resources either via a mobile app or by padding EA's multiplayer numbers.
They essentially took a beloved franchise and used it as an experiment to push EA's mobile/MP initiatives. The ending(s) were a reflection of that, too. Things were tied to those stupid resources rather than previous game content. I think any ending would probably bother people no matter what (after all they'd been through) but I think we know it could have been better.
