Low Fps with 4890?

Post your dxdiag file
run
dxdiag
next next next then save as
honestly I'm stumped and am 100% positive you are doing something wrong and it's not the card.

yea i had my mobo drivers installed

<a href=http://www.filedropper.com/dxdiag_1><img src=http://www.filedropper.com/download_button.png width=127 height=145 border=0/></a><br />
thats my dxdiag file

i really dont know whats wrong and i get 11-20fps in assassins creed

I think your drivers may be a tad out of date..
Try the new 9.4's especially considering your card is brand new...
Obviously the first thing that strikes me is your sound card doesn't have digitally signed drivers.
Might want to try creative's drivers, they have gotten better in vista as of late. I had an audigy 2 on my system and ran WHQL'd drivers

I dont know why but I game at 1920X1080 and games like L4D get 17-30fps and i have the latest drivers installed.

My rig is a Q6600 at stock, 550 watt psu, Vista 64, Msi 4890 1gig, 4 gigs of ram

A small chance this could be it, are you using 24X Edge Detect AA? I've found that with my 4870x2 and 4GHZ Core2Duo and using your same resolution that 24X Edge Detect stresses the card too much for my liking in L4D, instead of 100-300FPS with 16X at all times I get 38-100~ with the low end appearing with hordes of mobs and one molly plummets the FPS to crap, and in this game the fast FPS really seems to help it compared to say Crysis.

My guess is that 3D mode is not starting. When your computer is in 2d mode such as your desktop, the card automatically downclocks to conserve power and run a little cooler. Try setting your clockspeed to the default 3d setting manually and give it a go.

Sorry for being a little off-topic, but this may be my problem. How can I set my clock speed to the default 3d settings manually?
Edit: I have a GTX 280.

Check in the Catalyst Control Panel under 3D. Change it from Edge Detect, to, say, Box.

Not saying this is the case but more so for my own education, but if the problem was his PSU wouldn't he be experiencing other issues like hang ups and random restarts whiling gaming?

Edge detect is far more efficient i recall hearing and better then box and other methods...

Chanage your AA and AF setting to Application controled and try gaming.

Check to see what your GPU & Mem clocks are, install ATITool, http://www.techpowerup.com/atitool/

Start it and take note of the core and memory clocks, (top right) than click the "Show 3D View" button and see what they are. They should increase. Also may as well note the temperature readings as well after a few minutes with the 3D View open. Report back.

Not necessarily, some games don't seem to like it and shader heavy games as well are worse performing than Box. It is very game dependent.

If you have AA on, just turn it off to check your performance. If you have it on and set high that'd explain why you're getting bad performance :p

No, Edge Detect might be more efficient (I don't know?) than say NarrowTent/WideTent (which both suck because they blur the image, YMMV from person to person) but it uses shaders which means in shader heavy games it becomes very taxing.

I am using 8x box in L4D on 4890 and typically get 90+ fps @ 1920res even with lots of zombies on the screen. I haven't tried the 24x edge-detect, I can try that out and see what happens.

It might not make much of a difference. By now most Source-based games are completely CPU dependent. Hell, I run 2560x1600, everything cranked, with 16xQ CSAA and I stay in the 100-200FPS range.

Driver Version 8.60 is the latest driver version that comes with Catalyst 9.4. The one from your DXDIAG is 8.14.
You don't have the latest drivers installed. Someone asked you already if you had the latest drivers installed and you said yes.

You don't.

Stop messing with your CPU, Edge Detect, PSU etc...
Go to AMD's website and download the Catalyst 9.4 suite.

IF you are still having problems AFTER installing the newest drivers from AMD... you may need to clear your BIOS. It might have not detected the PCI-E speed properly and may need a BIOS reset to do so.

I ran into a problem I uninstalled my ati drivers and ran driver sweeper then downloaded Catalyst 9.4 suite and installed it but now it says I have display drivers 8.15 in my Dxdiag

How come it doesnt show 8.6 if I got Catalyst 9.4 for Vista 64 bit?

Is there a way to just obtain the driver display and see the version before downloading?

Thats what shows up and I still h ave low fps!!! Im at my wits end

Take your pc to geek squad at best buy.

About all the help we can give you at this point.

Because your at your wits end, the only suggestion I can throw into the mix is look at your \Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository area after you have deinstalled the drivers in normal mode and after you have run the drivercleaner / driversweeper program(s) in safe mode. It appears Vista likes to hold onto old versions even if you don't really want them. It's suggested to turn off UAC and to use the takeown command on folder / files you need to delete / modify. Have a google around to look for specific instructions.

Someone above suggested a fresh Vista install, that might be worth considering. If you have a spare hard drive (even a small one), throw a new install on it. It might prove finally if its a driver / OS stuffup or a hardware problem.

Stuff the OP hasn't mention doing:
- Replace the PSU: Still a good idea even if it isn't the problem since the OP's PSU is a total POS
- Reformat and reinstall the OS.

I'm really surprised that no one considered that the card itself is bad. I know its not nice to think of your brand new part as broken, but it happens. Take it back to the store.

Wait a minute, are you using the 2 year old version of driver sweeper from guru3d?

That thing is ancient and its crap at removing drivers. Google driver sweeper and pay $10 for the latest version of the site.

Starting to think I may have to 2nd that... :D:D:D

You getting any crashes or lockups. That's a nasty cpu temp if its correct.

You ever run ATI Tool like I said, curious to see if the card is running at full speed.
But if your CPU is cooking like that, you have other concerns.

havent been able to try it out yet taking summer classes but i will let you guys know tomorrow thanks for everyones input so far
