I dont know why but I game at 1920X1080 and games like L4D get 17-30fps and i have the latest drivers installed.

My rig is a Q6600 at stock, 550 watt psu, Vista 64, Msi 4890 1gig, 4 gigs of ram

I have a sapphire 4890 and play at 1920x1200, 8xAA and L4D runs butter smooth on cat 9.4's.

Running XP 32bit.

hmm I installed them and im still getting the same problem. I also uninstalled all my nvidia drivers before i put this ati in i really dont know whats wrong.

I was running an ATI 1800XT on cat 9.2's before this card. I did not uninstall my drivers when I switched to the new card.

If your switching camps then thats probably the issue. Did you run driver cleaner or did you just uninstall the NV drivers.?

First of whats the Brand / Make of that PSU? A newegg link would be really helpful.

Two I hope you uninstalled nvidia drivers then wiped everything clean with DriverCleaner from safe mode.

Uninstall the ATi drivers
perform DriverCleaner/Driversweeper for both Nvidia and ATi (in safe mode)
Reinstall ATi Drivers
Report back results

Check the driver control panel. Make sure the card isn't permanently stuck in 2d clock settings. Did you forget to plug in the aux power to your card?

How do you check that once connected the PSU is actually feeding the card correctly? Get a clamp tester and measure the current on those cables when playing. Or do a temporary replacement to a bigger PSU and test.

that shouldnt be happening on one card in l4d I was getting like 100 min

While I'm fairly sure that the PSU is not the cause of the low FPS, I'd still replace it anyway for the safety of the system. That PSU was found to be of really low quality by HardOCP:

So definitely replace the PSU ASAP. I recommend the BFG LS-550 550W PSU which can be had from www.buy.com for $58 which is an awesome price for a high quality PSU.

yes I did switch from an Nvidia to an ATI card. I tried disconnection all my peripherals like dvd drive cd drive sound card etc to see if my powersupply was the reason my card was not performing well and it stayed the same.

Does anyone else have any other ideas?

Your card is being bottlenecked, my best bet. Your Q6600 is at stock so it's holding the card back. You would probably get 2x more FPS running at 2560x1600. Try to take it to 3.0 on stock volts, if not, try 3.2 Ghz by dropping the multiplier to 8x and using 400MHz with perhaps 1.375vcore.

Is it all games that are running badly, you only mentioned L4D? Have you tested other games?

What? A q6600 at stock might hold the card back a bit, but not to this degree. And suggesting he will get double the framerate by running 25x16 is just plain wrong.

Do you have any third party video utilities? (ATI tray tools, rivatuner, etc) Maybe try uninstalling those.

I have seen it before. If a card is bottlenecked and you're running at 1024x768, and for some reason the FPS becomes much better as you raise the resolution because it's getting less bottlenecked.

I highly doubt him overclocking his CPU is gonna help at all. He says he's getting less than 30fps in L4D at 1920x1200, thats as bad if not worse than I get on my 8800 GTS 320mb which is running on a stock clocked E6600.

Usually if you're CPU bottlenecked increasing resolution doesn't improve framerate, it just doesn't make it much worse (CPU still holds game back to the same speed but GPU works harder to render the extra pixels at the same speed as it was doing for the lower resolution).

But still, give us some performance figures in other games if you can, it may help diagnose the problem, if its just L4D or if its every game.

almost 100% sure you installed the drivers wrong.

uninstall in regular windows. Reboot, start in safe mode. Run driver cleaner.
can download here : http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=745
Run it for ati, and nvidia.
Install drivers in regular windows.

If that's not the case you probably have a effed up install of windows, or you are running too many programs in the background. Nothing about your system would make you get low fps like that....

Also try and change your gpu settings in l4d. I forget how the game works but I think it will adjust your settings differently depending on what gpu card you have.

Yea I tried uninstalling all my drivers in safe mode and redoing it but still no dice =(.

In all my games I am only seeing a marginal improvement to my 7950gt which has me stumped. I am getting subpar FPS in all my games like Prince of Persia, Farcry 2, Fallout, Assassins Creed etc

i think ati have issues with hl2 engine.

try messing with the render mode like dx10 or dx9 and stuff.

I tried playing my games at a lower resolution and im getting the same FPS scores perhaps even lower in some games.

How big is your hard drive, do you have an extra data partition that doesn't have much on it? Perhaps try a fresh install of windows if you can. Just do it on a separate partition or drive if you have one, so you dont lose your existing data (unless of course you dont care about your existing data, in which case just format your existing windows install).

You can also resize existing partitions to create new ones, but thats mildly risky. I've resized quite a few partitions using gparted and usually it works fine, but a couple of times it corrupted my data.

If you dont want to have to redownload all your steam games, just make sure you back up your steamapps folder and transfer it to a fresh install of steam on the new windows install.

My guess is that 3D mode is not starting. When your computer is in 2d mode such as your desktop, the card automatically downclocks to conserve power and run a little cooler. Try setting your clockspeed to the default 3d setting manually and give it a go.

True. I don't know what I'm saying.

So what driver are you using? Cat 9.4 64-bit? Or a driver package from MSI?
v-sync off?
No weird power saving features enables?

My 2 cents...

-Could be a bus issue on the motherboard.
-Could be bad ram or disk (caching issues).
-Could be your windows is hosed, and you should try a fresh install with nothing but the game and the drivers installed.

I just reformated my pc and im still getting low fps.

is it my cpu? I dont know how to overclock my q6600
