Love your socket 754?

Well guys, I just bit the bullet and ordered another 1GB stick of DDR RAM from newegg. This'll bring me up to 2GB, witch should smooth out the hiccups I've been experiencing in Oblivion, Battlefield 2142, NFS: Carbon, Etc. I'm slightly concerned as to what impact this will have on my overclock, though. I've heard a few horror stories about memory controllers taking a crap with more than one or two sticks installed...Ah well, I'm probably worrying for nothing.

If any of you are interested in what RAM I bought, I posted a link to it in the Hot Deals section of the forums. Thankfully Newegg still sells the same RAM I used when I first built my system, so I was able to get a semi-matched pair :D:

Yeah, it's value-ram with slightly loose timings, but it overclocks like mad. Every stick I've ordered (three in total, with this one being the fourth) has made it past DDR500 wit minimal effort, with one of them managing to reach DDR600 after a little pushing (and some copper ramsinks).

:) - to tell the truth I put on my headphones and just listen while working. It makes the day a little easier to get through. It will be a Star Wars day today. :)

I sold my much loved socket 754 clawhammer 3700+ and DFI lanparty board.

I still have a not so new MSI K8N Neo3 s754 mobo because i wanted to use PCIe video over AGP.

whats the best CPU to put in this you think?

A $36 shipped 3200+ Venice chip from newegg! :)

10-4. The 3200+ Venice is a great cpu and dirt cheap right now. I've never seen one clock less than 2.6 ghz. Just make sure you have the latest bios version for your mobo. Flash if necessary and you are good to go.
I think I'd have sold the MSI and kept the LanParty though...

I hear ya, I really loved the DFI board , but I wasnt willing to hold on to AGP anymore. the prices were too close to PCIe VS. a high end AGP card hense the switch to a PCIe s754 mobo. I might use this to make a nice HTPC or a linux box.

3200 eh.. maybe i join the S754 club ...rock on! - thanks Noob thanks BigMac

NP NP... WELCOME BACK to s754? :)

Oops - yeah - I forgot about the AGP vs PCI-e you had mentioned. Actually I have one of each. The work setup has a VisionTek X800Pro 256 mb card while my home (sig) system has a PCI-e Sapphire X800 Pro VIVO card. They both perform the same - there isn't one bit of difference between them - only about 200 3DMark03 scores better on the PCI-e card when max oc'd and that's only because the 3400+ Venice cpu oc's 150-200 mhz more than the 3700+ Claw in the work system. Now If I'd upgrade the PCI-e video card it would be quite a bit of difference I'm sure but since I don't have need of any more power it'd just be a waste of $$$ to upgrade.

Ahhh.....the $36 Venice 3200+ from Newegg! The deal of the day that made me switch back to an AMD system. In fact I liked it so much, I bought another one a few days later with the Biostar K8T800-A7A motherboard for 69.99. This combo went in one of my spare systems and runs awesome. The Biostar motherboard even seems to have an AGP/PCI lock and I have been able to get to 240FSB on it using a memory divider.

And yes, 2GB makes all the difference in the world. On my main system (see sig) I just came from 1GB. The difference in gaming is amazing. All my lag in FEAR, HL2, and Chronicles of Riddick EFBB has completely vanished. The best part is when you exit an intense game, it no longer takes Windows 30 seconds to repaint the desktop icons.....:D

Im ordering a 3200, so soon i will be lovin the s754 again, and membership will be at hand. this time in an MSI NF4 PCIe board for a rocking HTPC, I have an X850 xt Platinum AND an ATI TV wonder remote edition.

In my siggy I boast some E6600 snobbery, but not for long. soon a a754 media box will join it at the Podium muuuhahah:p

hey guys,
looking to pop one of those venice 3200 chips in my rig.

ive got a newcastle 3000+ currently in there.
minimal oc capabilities as my mobo doesn't have an agp lock.

the 3200+ worth it? I have no idea what kind of performance increase an extra 200 mhz would bring.

thanks,
mike

p.s. how hard is it to install a cpu? i'm a little bit worried about that.

yes, I do believe it's worth it... As for installing a cpu, it's quite simple. Just remove the heatsink\fan and clean off all the thermal grease off. Then lift the socket lever to remove the current processor. To install, just do the reverse... DONT put in the cpu unless you liefted up the little lever first. I've heard a few stories where people just put it in and crushed the pins when they put the heatsink on. LoL.

There are also some heatsink/fans that install with the clip (like my sig hsf) just like the stocker does. The one I'm using weighs over a pound and works great.

okay guys, you've convinced me.

and because i hate my current fan (noisy), i'm gonna get some new cpu cooling.

"Arctic Cooling Freezer 64 Pro "

those seem to be well reviewed on this site (and others) and seem to be VERY easy to install.

any opinions?

I have one, great cooler for the money.

neato,
both processor and cooler have been ordered. if i don't show up in a few days to thank you guys, you'll know my computer is fried and i'm hunting all of you down.

thanks!

HI again,

What is the most a 3200 can do OC I have been trying for 2700 now for 2 weeks can't quite get is prime95 stable on a DFI nf4x infinity stock cooler 2.6 no problem. I see a few can hit 2800 no problem on the 3200.

any help appreciated.

Duane

The 3000+, 3200+, and 3400+ Venice chips all OC to around the same level; you should have no problem getting up to somewhere between 2.5 and 2.6GHz, and you might be able to get to 2.7GHz, but only the very rare few will go beyond that.

If I swapped ram I have no doubts mine would run in the 2.8 range. Honestly for me it is fast enough at 2.4.

I am waiting for the Barcelona chip before I make any changes.

It's all BigMac's fault.

Hey Duane, thanks. I wish we could coax more from that 3200+ but as you know I couldn't get it any further when I had it. I was hoping the DFI mobo would be the answer to bump it somewhat further.

My second GB of RAM arrived, and I have it installed. I'm running at stock speeds right now and I'm about to start tinkering with it :D

It's not looking good though; these 1GB sticks are two sided, meaning that each stick is effectively taking up two memory banks. When I added the second stick, I shot up to using four memory banks, meaning that there's now a much higher load on my memory controller.

We'll see, I'll report back with my findings in a little bit.

Has any one here in the 754 club heard if the 8800gts will run ok or not on a fast running setup socket 754? Someone offered me a deal on the 320mb one but I just bought the ATix1950 pro a few weeks ago for my setup.

Thanks

It will run, but the CPU will hold it back. Not sure how much. My Pentium D CPU does anyway, but on the next pricedrop I plan to fix that :)

As long as you have a faster s754 processor, you should be OK with an 8800GTS for current games...I'm considering one myself, if AMD doesn't get Quad Cores out the door soon :p

Back to my RAM testing...I'm currently running at 220 x 12, giving me a CPU speed of 2.62GHz, and a RAM clock of DDR 440. I'm stable here according to Memtest (boy did that take forever to run on 2GB of RAM), so I'm going to save the fine-tuning for later tonight and see how a few things run with 2GB of RAM.

Even if I can't get the two sticks up to DDR 500 (the highest attainable clock in my single-stick configuration), I'm sure the extra space outweighs the slight decrees in bandwidth :D

It's all BigMac's fault.

your lives are safe! i'm up and running.

quite a lot of fun getting it all installed. this strengthens my resolve to build my own computer.

thanks again,
mike

err, just to be on the safe side, if the cpu does fail and burnout, will my hard drive data be safe?

Yup, I think worst case scenario is if your psu blows out or you don't have a surge protector and lightning strikes... then I think you might have more to worry about.

WOW. that's almost worth buying a few from NE and putting them on Ebay-$60+!!!!!!!

**Edit-Just ordered a 3000 and 3200 Venice open box from NE.

*hiding behind a rock*.... I'm sorry I sold it guys... Even sorrier I only sold it for $73 shipped. I ended up finding a cheap a8n32, that 4000+ san diego on newegg... i would have been happier to sell it to one of you guys for $65 shipped to avoid fleabay fleas... haha.

I took my DFI NF3 Lanparty mobo off eBay though... I am having second thoughts and keeping it... and getting that 3200+ for $36 and the difference I made and get another case... I already have other spare parts and try to make a htpc? hmm... I think I would need a tuner card. Don't count me out of the 754 club yet... just call me a, traitor!! haha. *still peeking behind the rock*

***Edit... Newegg had the 3400+ Venice 754 still on their list as out of stock, but it's no longer even in there. That starmicro? place still has them in stock, but now sells them for $150 each. That's where BigMac discovered them back in the day and I bit too... they were $99. I might have said the e-tailers name wrong. haha.
