Love your socket 754?

Don't be afraid of 1.7v. When I set my bios to 1.7v CPU-z reports it at 1.735v. No problems getting 270x10 and the temps are quite manageable.

Dr. Freeze - no need to worry about 20 pin vs 24 pin connectors. My Abit NV8 has a 24 pin socket but my Enermax only has a 20 pin connector and a 4 pin pony tail. When I plug in the 20 pin it will boot the system right up but when I plug in the 4 pin pony tail it won't boot at all. Very weird. The mobo documentation says it a-ok to run with the 20 pin connector in the 24 pin socket so I just followed their installation instructions and all is well :)

Don't be afraid of 1.7v...
Uhh, I have the EPoX 8NPA SLI, the maximum voltage I can give my chip is 1.6v. It's not exactly a bad place to cap it (it's the highest most people would feel safe at), but it would be nice to push it just a smidgen higher.

Now I'm perfectly happy with 2.7GHz...but I'm open to trying any voltage mods that might be out there :D

yeah i know, i ran my 939 board with 24 pin of the same psu for a few days untill i got my enermax liberty 500, but the thing is that i know the extra 4 pins are for pci-e power, and since im running a 6800 of the slot without external power, i figured that having the 4 extra pins unused might be bad, and asrock might have adapted their design

but right now im rather displeased with my board, for some reason it doesnt OC for shit, i can get 9x222 (for 2.0) stable, 9x250 (2.25) is stable enough for a superpi 1 m, but locks in 3dm01 within seconds, even when i take memory timings into my own hands and slack em up

im not entirely sure what the problem is, my memory isnt exactly good stuff, but i keep the timings loose and the speed at 200 or lower, i drop the HTT to 3x, Vcore is at max, which is 1.45, which should be enough for this sempron to do atleast 2.4 or something

bleh this is kinda bumming me out, comming from a dually to this... thing doesnt even clock nicely

oops - doh! 2.7 @ 1.6v is a nothing to sneeze at.

That 1.45v will really limit you since 1.40v is stock. a 450 mhz oc on only .05v is pretty good. If you get a better mobo you can take it further.

im doing 2.15 GHz (9x238) on 1.35, but if i believe speedfan then this mobo overvolts by 0.05

it seems like the ram i have in here (OEM shit out of a HP, one stick hynix, one stick samsung) is picky as it gets, i might just throw two of my HyperX sticks in here for some testing, not being able to figure out my Vdimm doesnt really help (damn you asrock with your "low", "normal","high" and "ultrahigh" levels)

but from what i can tell, 2.15 is stable, at least 3dm01 didnt crash anymore

as for getting a new mobo, not an option, and i dont really need to OC this machine at all, i just wanted to play with the hardware untill i put it down to mediabox/homeserver duty

Hey all
I was bidding on noobtech's 3400+ Vanice a week ago but decided to let it go. Well, I happened to get one yesterday, brand new never installed (or so the seller says) on ebay. I already have one that does 2.73 but I'm always on the lookout for that elusive 2.8ghz chip. Perhaps this one will be it.
As soon as it gets here I'll put it to the test and see what it does. I'll keep you posted.

Say BigMac, what are you doing with all your old chips? You can't tell me you have them just sitting in a drawer?

You could probably build a pretty sweet C2D rig if you sold all your extra s754 gear. :p

:D I have 1 each 3000+, 3200+ and 3400+ just sitting in my drawer and 1 3000+ in the system right now. I just rotate them in and out when I get bored. I also have a 3400+ Clawhammer and Asus K8N4-E Deluxe mobo in my church's youth group system. :D I may put this new 3400+ Venice in my work system and if it works out well I can sell my 3700+ Clawhammer and make back some of my money. They are selling for crazy money on ebay. Go figure.

Hmm, I wonder how much a 3200+ Newcastle would fetch on eBay, I still have my old one kicking around...probably not much, we all know how well Newcastle's overclock (I've never seen one get much farther than 2.5GHz).

I've seen them offered on ebay for $59.95 Buy It Now. Haven't seen many takers. The 3400+ Venices are going for less than $100 while the 3700+ Clawhammers are fetching upwards of $200!!!!! Like I said - crazy money for that cpu.

Bigmac, we need to persuade those people that the 3700+'s aren't better than the 3400+ venices... lol. Then we can get "BILLIONS"... I mean, 100 more if we sold them and get a 6000+ AM2. haha

*edit... I'm REALLY tempted to sell my wifes build... (It's really mine, but I tell her it's for her...(pulling up the pants)) I only use hers when my computer is down & out... haha!! She'll kick my butt if she saw this.

But yeah, it would just make me feel better if her computer had dual cores now. ;-)

Hey now, let me sell my 3700+ first! I want to get $50 more than I paid for it. :p

I'm still running my 3400+ system here. I've been distracted since the release of the Wii and picking up a 360, but once in a while I fire up a PC game still.

I still feel no need to upgrade yet. Longest I've been on a socket in ages. The CnC3 demo ran fantastic as well at 1920x1200 medium settings, and that's likely my next game purchase.

Well guys, I received my DFI NF4X yesterday. Unfortunately, it does not seem to be working. It powers up normally, all the fans work, but I get no display to the monitor (have tried 2). Also, the Power LED on the front of the case only stays illuminated for a couple seconds after start-up.

One thing I did do wrong was booted it with the CMOS jumper on "clear" the very first time I started it (actually, could that have screwed something up?). I have since cleared CMOS again, including removal of battery, but still nothing.

Also, I get no beeps whatsoever. I even tried booting with no RAM, but still no beeps!

Booting it with the jumper on the clear setting wouldn't affect it.. I would just suggest reinstall everything and be sure everything was seated right.

hey guys, short Q in between

today and tomorrow there is a PC discount fair in town here, and even though i dont need anything right now, i couldnt resist popping in, only to be dissapointed off course, no cheap 8800 GTS for me

but back on topic, there was one booth which had a socket 754 3700 tray cpu listed for only 55 euros, and i immediatly though about upgrading my fresh built sempron 3000 machine. But when i asked the salesman about the cpu he was like "well yeah we have them, but they are special edition, and wont run in every mobo" when i told him i had a asrock K8Nf6g-vsta he was like "itll only run at 800 mhz, if you had a nf4 version it would have been ok"

was he talkin out of his ass? i dont know of any "special edition" 3700....

could be i suppose, but he listed it as a normal 3700, 1mb l2 and all that

he also couldnt tell me if it would run in my lil brother NF3-250 based board, so im inclined to think he was just talking BS

If it has an IHS on it, then it's a normal 3700+. If it has an open core, then it's a mobile processor and will only work in certain motherboards.

I reinstalled and reseated everything...same problem. I even have the mobo sitting on its cardboard box next to the case with nothing but the CPU, RAM, and video card installed.

Gusty - sounds like RMA time.

Dr. Freeze - as far as I know there were no "special edition" s754 3700+ cpu's; only Clawhammer (2.4 ghz stock) and mobile (2.6 ghz). Both had 1mb of L2 cache. If the 3700+ had an intergrated heat spreader on it (IHS) like a normal desktop chip its a Clawhammer and will work in your asrock and your brother's nf3 mobo. If it has no lid on it then it is a mobile 3700+ and will only work in certain mobo's that can support it. Not all desktop mobo's can handle mobile chips but some can. Did you get to see the chip itself or did he just have a price list?
If it had a lid on it I'd say he was talking BS.

That is very unfortunate... I really hate waiting and getting a new part, only to find out I have to RMA it... I actually had to do that when the A8N32SLI's came out... my first board was a dud. I guess it's the luck of the draw.... But yeah, looks like it's RMA time. :-(

How was your first impressions on the board and packing as for quality?

Well - it looks like we have a winner folks. I got this 3400+ Venice off ebay and it arrived today so I slapped it in and after a good bit of messing around this is what I've got. CPU-z has a problem reporting any voltages over 1.55v - I am at 1.7v on this oc and it ran HL Deathmatch for about an hour with no hiccups. I will still need to do a lot more testing but so far it looks very promising. Ram is at DDR400 1:1 with timings of 2.5-2-2-8 1T. Best Superpi so far is a paltry 33.38 which is slower than my other 3400+ Venice but that one "only" does 248x11 with the ram set on the DDR433 divider with the same timings. The other 3400+ has a better memory controller in it evidently.
So far I'm quite pleased - 2.8 ghz in-game stable is sweet!
Looks like I'll have to edit my sig soon. ;)

Thanks kindly. I'm a very happy boy right now. Now if I could just get my SuperPi times down into the 32 sec. range...
As I'm typing this the cpu is sitting at 38C (its more or less just idling right now).
I tried some Vantec paste when installing the 3400+. I had it laying around from a new fan I bought for my Athlon 2400XP. It came with the fan so I thought I'd give it a try. It is white like AS Ceramique. I ran some SuperPi pulls and thought it seemed a bit warm so I removed it and put on some Shin-Etsu I got with my hsf I'm using with this machine. To my surprise there was no difference at all in temps! I'll be using that Vantec stuff in the future since I have about 3 more applications worth of it. It isn't quite as thick as AS Ceramique but its so close it isn't funny.

thanks everyone for the replies on the weirdo 3700

i didnt bother taking a look at the chip, i figured either he was wrong and its a normal 3700 which seriously kills off his credibility, and im not sure if i would buy a non boxed cpu from a guy who is BSing his customers, or he was right and it wont work in my mobo anyway

in hindsight i should have asked to see the chip, i probably remember all the OPN codes from back when i researched my 3400, i could have picked out a clawhammer if i saw one, i guess i could go back today, but i dont feel like paying the 9 euro entrance fee just to find out he has a few mobile chips left over, because there is no way im buying another 754 board

thanks guys!

I need some advice from my fellow 754'ers :)

I had a guy in New Zealand offer me $270 for my Corsair Ram w/ LED's on it... I checked shipping with all the delivery confirmation and all and it comes to $13.65 shipped for 4-6day service. I can sell the 3400+ Venice for $60+ & The DFI Lanparty board for ~ 60...

So for $390 I can upgrade to another 3600+ X2, 2gb Buffalo Firestix, and a Gigabyte Mobo w/ onboard video for now... til I can sell the FX 5500... LoL.

Do you guys think that's worth it or should I leave the system alone? What would you guys do?

I'd sell probably. I've been contemplating a move to an X2 3600+ Brisbane, Abit KN9 mobo and some Geil ram (GX22GB6400 UDCA) over at Newegg. Total cost is $288 + tax and shipping. The Geil has decent timings (4-4-4-12). Seems like the cost to upgrade to AM2 won't get any lower anytime soon now that all the price cuts have hit.

I think I am just going to keep her stuff... Also, they were pretty cool for it's day :)

At least I can game on my computer... LoL.

Meh - I know what you mean. I've been contemplating a move to an AM2 X2 3600 but just can't seem to let go of what I have - especially now that I've hit the 2.8 ghz plateau.

I'm sure since we have good parts, we can last a while longer... maybe we should wait for that AM2+ or AM3... or whatever it's called. ha!! It's funny because I can still do everything I need to do with both computers, but it's just fun\better to have a better machine... just in case.

Same here, I'm drooling over the 640mb 8800GTS, but my current 7900GT still plays everything just fine.

I have a feeling the situation will change once Crysis and UT2007 come out, but why spend the money until then?

New stuff is always fun :p but like you guys, I can do everything I need to do and then some with my rig. So until I need more oomph I'll save my pennies and enjoy every minute of it!

I just rebuilt my main rig (DFI nF3 250Gb/ 754 Venice 3000) with a DFI "Expert" board and AMD X2 3800 CPU.

I might use the "good ol' horse", which ran at 2600 for 2 years, as a "folder" or something...

These old single core systems work great as Media Center PC's, they have more than enough power for the job, and they run cool. If you're going to be building your next computer from the ground up, just fix up the s754 setup with 1TB of disk space (2x500GB) for around $250, and a decent TV tuner for around $80, throw on MythTV for an operating system, and you're all set.

Hello member's,

I am new to this forum and proud thanks to BigMacAttack selling me a venice 3200 and I have it overclocked at 237 X 11(2600Mhz) at 1.52v on my new DFI infinity NF4x board Pic-e PC2700 2x512with a new ATI Radeon X1950 pro 256 Pic-e and so far so good.

I will be tring Elder Scrolls :Oblivion out next week.

I run everything so far at 1024x768 on CRT 19inch
