Love your socket 754?

wow, that's a nice deal... :D

i wonder how it overclocks :p

 You should know!

I've been tempted by that myself. I'd probably grab it but I just bought one of the 3200+'s a month or so ago for $55. Got it to 2.7 in my Abit NV8 but could quite probably do better in the DFI.

That's what I was hoping with the new 3200+ Venices. They are new chips (0649 - 49th week of '06) - not releases of old stuff but my 1st 3200+ actually ran a bit better. I had high hopes for this new 3200+ I bought but I had to do some hard tweaking to get it to 2.7. It ran better at 2.6ghz (@1.48v no less) but it was a tough nut to crack to get it on up to 2.7 which disappointed me more than a little bit, so I just put my 3400+ Venice back in and tossed the 3200+ back in my desk. It will be my backup in case the 3400+ ever goes down.

Well, guys, looks like I might soon be leaving the Socket 754 club...I just won an FX 55 and a s939 motherboard :D

Depending on how nice the motherboard is and how far the FX 55 overclocks, it will either be used as the core of a Media Center PC that I'm working on, or as a replacement for my EPoX 8NPA and 3400+ (in which case, the s754 gear becomes the core of the Media Center PC).

Planned specs of Media Center PC:
- 1GB PC3200 RAM.
- GeForce 7600GT.
- 2 TB disk space (4x 500GB drives).
- 74 GB WD Raptor OS drive.
- Duel TV tuners.
- Windows Vista Home Premium.

Now I have everything except the GeForce 7600GT, the 74 GB Raptor, the duel TV tuners, and the RAM.

So I guess after months of asking, I'm still not added to the list... well this blows. I have plenty of 754's to go around too....

Think you've got what it takes? Well, we want you! The socket 754 club, or the s754 club as we so lovingly refer to it as, is looking for those who can't get enough of that performance/dollar ratio....and single channel memory. And as their "PR dude" it's my job to get recruits....now who wants in on this ownage? Just PM me to add you into the list, and just put that you're a member of the s754 club in your sig, and you're set.

Looks like I'm gonna be leaving the 754 team also. My 3000+ apparently just took a dump. I'm likely gonna jump over to an X2. Any suggestions on which ones? Newegg's got the 3800+ X2 with an Abit mobo for $167 right now. Is that a good deal?

Yup, unless of course its an AM2 setup. If so, the ram will hurt more than anything. Good luck on the new rig.
PS - of course you could just spend $50 and get a new 3000+ Venice or 3200+ Venice from Newegg. Its cheap and would hold you over a little while longer until prices come down a bit more...

Well, looks like I'm going to hold out on s754 a little while longer...There are a few key points that make it look better not to use the free parts in my main rig.

- The motherboard they are giving me has no overclocking options.
- The FX-55 is still single core.
- I don't see an FX-55 at stock clocks gaining much over my current setup.
- Socket 939 is still a dead end socket.
- The motherboard is Micro-ATX and has integrated video with DVI output.

Sooo my s754 rig stays as it is for now, and the FX-55 will be the core of the Media Center PC. Still a free motherboard + processor + integrated video card, so I'm not complaining :D

Yeah, that crossed my mind. I saw the 3000+ on newegg for $53. I'll keep that option in mind. Of course, I'm starting to get into HDTV recording on my PC so I really would like to upgrade my computer soon. And yeah, it is the AM2 one I'm looking at. Is that not a good setup?

Since I posted something here:

I'll post in here too. :) Just letting you know that AMD has also gotten in contact with us as well as those 939 boys. ;) AMD would like to thank every one of you guys for supporting their platform and being so passionate about AMD, as well as their single channel socket. And while we aren't giving away stuff on the [H] like the other guys, we do have a contact in AMD now so if you guys want any questions answered about anything, let me know and I can fire off an email to Chris and get you guys a response, and we are working with AMD as well, just in a different way.

Long live 754!

Questions? Hmm...The only question I have is "is there anything new comping down the pipe for Socket 754?"

If you're only doing HDTV and not getting into the HD-DVD/BluRay thing, your current rig (with a new proc of course) is plenty.

Don't know how I missed this one, but count me in. Proud owner of a asus k8vse mobo and amd3200. s754 of course.

Also a proud owner here, thought about upgrading my PC this weekend to a AM2 x2 5000+ but the price-to-advantage ratio wasn't very desirable. So instead gonna go get some new goodies to freshing up the 754 and overclock this badboy. :D

now wheres my member badge!? lol

Cool. I went ahead and bought the 3200+ and a 512 stick of memory. My rig should be purring again in a few days(hopefully :D ) . Hopefully I can get it oc'd to at least 2.5ish.
BTW, can I get one of those "member of the socket 754" badges in my sig too??? ;)

I got the $53 3200 a couple of days ago.
I put it in a Biostar motherboard from a previous 754 deal.

At 1.52 volts the processor lasted only a couple hours in prime 95 @ 2.7 ghz.

So it looks like it will be stable somewhere in the 2.6's

I think 2.5 ghz should be no problem for you.

Doh!

Well, I hesitated, and now Newegg is out of the DFI board. In its place, they are offering the 3200+ combo with a Biostar VIA mATX board. I know its a longshot, but I fired off an email to customer service to see if they are going to get any more of the DFI boards in stock.

Excellent! Thanks. What is a good voltage for these chips? I had my 3000+ running at 1.6 volts on stock air and my temps were very good. Is that kind of high volts?

it's pushing it for 90nm, but i don't see it dying anytime soon. ;)

I still love my A64 system (It's new, but using my old lidless 3000+ from 2004 that Eclipse knows about) and it's working great. Fortunately for me, next week I'll be getting a 3400+ to give me a bit of a power and I'd be able to overclock too. :D

Check my sig. I've been running mid 1.6v's for quite some time with no ill effects. These Venice cpu's don't really come to life unless you zap them with some good voltage. 1.6v is just fine.

You'll like the 3400+ Mr. Stryker. While it doesn't oc as high percentage-wise as the 3000+ or 3200+, in my experience so far it oc's the highest. I was doing 2.75 for a good while but have had to back off to 2.73 of late. The 3400+ Venice has been my favorite s754 Venice chip.

Zarni - if you want to run at 2.7 you'll need to go to 1.6v at least and maybe 1.65v. I would be surprised if it won't hold 2.7 under Prime95 at 1.65v

Nuc_E - Avoid the VIA chipset boards and see if they'll throw in a TForce6100 or nForce4 as a replacement. Just stay away from the Gigabyte nForce4 board. Its a crappy oc'er.

And as far as getting into the club - here is a snippet from a post I made on the previous page (quoted from Page 1, post 1 by tseuhpsyde)

Yup, 1.6v is the sweet spot for these Venice chips.

I've had my 3400+ @ 2.7GHz @ 1.6v for a long time now, no problems. Just be sure you keep it cool.

Way ahead of ya. Yesterday afternoon, I saw that they got the DFI in stock and I jumped on it. I got the 3200+ with the DFI, a XClio PSU and the NZXT Duet case on the way. I've been down that road before with the GIgabyte board, though it didn't matter much, since I was running a 3700+ at the time. That's the board that crapped out on me.

I just jumped on the 3200+ venice deal on newegg. On a whim I listed my 3700+ clawhammer on ebay to see what I would get for it, to my surprise I got over $200 for it, so I decided to grab a venice and a ninja and some better cooling for my video card. I'm looking forward to doing a little overclocking, although I don't know how far I'll get on this ECS motherboard. I was going to get the DFI nf4 infinity but I don't see the point in making the jump to PCI-E without jumping to dual core and DDR2 as well, so I figured I'd just pick up some good cooling since I'll be able to use it on a newer rig in a few months.

So anyway I just wanted to let you know if you happen to have a 3700+ claw, you might want to try and ebay it cause you could be sitting on a goldmine, considering I sold mine for more than I paid for it over a year and a half ago.

Sweet. :D

Bye bye Clawhammer. eBay, here I come!

I am thinking about getting rid of mine as one big lump. Biostar tforce matx, 3400 venice, 2gb patriot ddr400 and a volcano 12. I am hoping for $250-300 for the whole kit.

If what I have read is true about the am2+ processors running in an am2 board.

hah, thats what I was thinking for mine, but I was planning on selling the entire system at the end of this semester anyway.

You'd probably be better off trying to part it out, some on ebay some on here. No guarantees but I see the 3700+ claws going for at least $130 all the time on ebay (which is why i listed mine), and as I said, mine just sold for a hair over $200. If your 754 board is good you could probably fetch a fair amount for it on here, same for your RAM. Video card might sell better on ebay. As a whole, you won't get as much (especially on ebay), although it would be a lot less hassle.

I would give you $250 shipped for it. Not this week though. :)

Yeah, I agree, but the thing is I'll be selling it before I move to get a job. My motherboard is great, 754 PCI-E which does 330+ HTT, but I just don't know if it'll be worth the hassle of parting it all out. I'd estimate that I would make another 15-20% total on the machine, but for ease of sale I think getting rid of it locally on craigslist would be the easiest (I think I could probably get $400-$500ish, probably a bit more with my monitor, speakers, and mouse).

what's the most powerful socket 754 cpu? whatever it is, is it a noticable difference from my 2.2ghz 3200+?

4000+ newark.. 2.6ghz, 1mb L2. basically an FX-55 in 754 clothing
and not a huge difference unless you overclock. the 4000+ should be able to do 2.9-3ghz :p

good to hear that thing is still tickin :D
