Love your socket 754?

I'm not upgrading persay:

Gaming computer: S754/AGP
Linux/Vista "test" computer: S939

I fell in love with the ECS board after building a cheapo box for my father last weekend.

Another tiny glimmer of hope for s754 X2's; AMD is bringing out the Sempron X2 line in Q3 of 2007...

I know it will probobly only be for AM2, but I can dream, can't I? :p

Wow, if they actually made an X2 754... i would have to get it... just because :) haha

s754 for life!! j/k... that might be like someone still using a 286 for todays games.

I dunno. All the new CPUs seem to be all about more cores. I have no use for a dual-core at this time. The extra cores do nothing for me, as there's almost no games that use it. I still have no reason to upgrade any time soon. It's weird to be on a socket for so long (close to 2 years now), but I have a feeling that I'm going to be running 754 at least through the end of next year.

Same here as well... I will bite on the upgrade somewhere around beginning of 2008. In the meanwhile, my next upgrade is to get rid of the cheap 17" CRT and get a nice widescreen 20" LCD like the Dell 2007FPW.

I might pick up an 8800GTS when if hit the $300 range...or if they knock the price on 7900GT's down enough, I might pick up a second one and go SLI :D

I'll need to go back to the stock 80mm fan on my VF900 though, the 120mm fan I have zip-tied to it right now is blocking the second slot!

I never knew my newcastle was capable of doing this with the side window open and my case next to the window...It wasnt even that freezing outside just chilly :)

It booted at 3.0ghz at same volts but didnt get a chance to validate BSOD :( I am sure with more volts it would run 2.9-3.0ghz prime stable with some sick water cooling or phase change  All done @ 1.7-1.75V and 2.7V for the ram :)

Figured I'd post something to get this thread back to page 1.

How about a 31 second SuperPi? ;)

That's hella fast for a newcastle. I've only got my venice at 2.682

yeah it looks like a crazy chip..

i didnt tweak anything just set the voltages and timings and boom

You got yourself one of the rare gems indeed. Most Newcastles can't get over 2.4 - 2.5 GHz (I have one who cannot go above 2.5).

Same thing here, my 3400+ NewCastle can't break 2.5GHz. Coupled with the poor overvoltage options on the K8N4-E Deluxe and it's better off staying stock.

i run it 2700mhz 24/7 until I can afford soem better cooling...I do not like noise :p

My Newcastle 3000+ (2.0GHz) could only do 2.4GHz, and even the Venice I have now won't go much past 2.6GHz. Nice chip dude, get a BigTyphoon on there and see if you can hold 3GHz. :D

stryker_s754_monster_lol.jpg

Nothing special, but the overclock and being stable while folding 24/7 is nice for a $48 mATX board that can't do vcore/vdimm adjustments.

This is also running @ 1:1 divider, using my old Geil Ultra 1GB PC4000 kit.

Heatsink is a Thermaltake K8 Silent Boost with a 70cfm 80mm Thermaltake SmartFan blue LED.

I'm curious if any 754'ers are picking up an 8800GTX/GTS and seeing how they perform on the platform.

If i have money, I would definitely be the guinea pig for this but unfortunately no :( I just got a 7900GS myself and I'm waiting to see ppl ditch the same XFX 7900GS as mine at a low price to grab a 2nd for some SLI bliss (not sure if anyone did a sli setup with 754 yet).

Attention all EPoX 8NPA Owners! Get your Zalman on!!!
I just replaced the annoying little Northbridge cooler and its 40mm fan with a Zalman ZM-NB47J. It sits close enough to my BigTyphoon that it gets some airflow, so no extra fan was needed.
As far as I can tell it’s running far cooler than the stock HS/f and its totally passive (and better yet, silent).

Now get this, many people have reported that their processors don't overclock as well in the 8NPA as other s754 motherboards, I think an overheating nForce 4 chipset might have been to blame.
Even when you bumped the voltage on the chipset you gained no overclocking headroom because the chip was hitting a temperature wall.

All it took was giving the Northbridge a small voltage bump and replacing the HS/f on it; I just gained 120MHz on my overclock (so I'm up to 2.72GHz @ 1.6v )!

Screenshots once I find out if its prime stable :D

I'm not sure if I'm going to buy a second 7900GT or just skip to an 8800GTS...do we even have benchmarks of the 8000 series yet?

Does the Zalman interfere with the videocard or is very close ?? From your results, I might be interested to get one or even a heatpipe cooler (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16835109128) or something similar. My goal was to reach at least 2.6 GHz prime stable, which I never succeded yet (I did with the MSI K8N so I know the cpu is able and your new finding may explain why).

EDIT : After some thinking, I will order one but are torn between the HR-05 or HR-05-SLI since I wanted to have a reusable chipset cooler in the future and the SLI one would be better. Checking the pic of the 8npa and the HR-05-SLI made me wonder if it can clear either the CPU heatsink or the edge of the videocard. If not, i'll order the HR-05. I need some advice or experience with this.

The Zalman has the same footprint as the stock cooler, so as long as nothing is in front of that, you'll be fine.

The cooler you linked looks like it will work (its more than twice the price if the Zalman though).

Finally ordered the HR-05 since there is a chance that my future upgrade will include integrated heatsink cooling which is included on high-end versions. There is also a chance that if i don't pick a sli motherboard, the cooler works.

I don't care for the price since i have paypal money sleeping and awaiting something :p

I will give you results when I get it... Hope you are right.

I have an Asus board, with the notoriously failing northbridge fan. It failed in months, and I put off replacing it for a long time. Finally, last christmas, I replaced it with none other than the Zalman ZM-NB47J. Some of the best chump change I ever spent.

You know how I thought getting rid of the 40mm northbridge fan made my case soooo quiet? yeah, well, it was mostly because I forgot to plug my VF900 back in

I started getting green artifacting in Need For Speed: Carbon, and when I reached in to feel how warm the Northbridge heatsink was getting, I burned my hand on the VF900 that was supposed to be keeping my video card cool! I quickly quit Need For Speed to find my card was well past 80c (176F), so the heatsink must have been at least 60c (140F)

I'm glad I didn't fry the card...now if you excuse me, I need to tend to this burn. It feels like I stuck my fingers (index, middle, and ring) under a hot glue gun.

Ouch, that's painful indeed... However, I thought the VF900 fan plug should be plugged on the video card and not on the motherboard ? I never messed with this kind of stuff so if i'm wrong then nevermind. The main thing is that you saved the 7900GT from a certain doom, which sucks since it's a nice card.

The stock fan on the FV900 has a standard 3pin fan connector on it, so no, it can't be pluged into the video card unless you swap the connector; same goes for the 120mm fan I have zip-tied to my VF900 :D.

Back down to 38c idle and the card was fine, yay!

I did that same thing on my lowly 6600GT after doing some card testing/changes/benchmarking once. I was playing Half Life 2 and it was artifacting like crazy. So I backed off my overclock and it got a bit better. It still artifacted, so I shutdown to check if everything was in order and bam... I had forgotten to plugin the VF700.

I put my ZalmanZM-NB47J on as soon as I took my Epox out of the box. I hate most active NB coolers and wasn't about to mount the motherboard and find out that this one was more of the same. Since I am running a XP-120 and (2) 120 mm fans on my side panel, airflow shouldn't be a problem for me.

I am glad to see that others have gotten gains from them. I went looking, but couldn't find where I had gotten mine from. I bought (4) Zalmans at the same time for a GREAT price retail... I will edit back if I am able to find out where I got them from and for how much.

I came accross a thread in the Video Card main forum and it looks like someone is going to drop a 8800GTS in an NF4 board. Hopefully he'll bench it at stock and then we'll know what kind of performance delta/deficit we're looking at. He has a 3700+ Clawhammer (2.4GHz 1Mb L2).

i orderd a abit nForce 4 mobo and a X1950Pro for him this evening to get some more life outa his S754 rig :) Ill post benchmarks once he gets it and we swap out mobos and video cards prob this Friday...Hes going from a 9800 pro >> X1950pro

i can't believe this thread is still going. I would think alll you hardcore pc dudes would be moving on to am2 and c2d... :D
I guess i understand where you are all coming from though. Why upgrade when your system is still running well. Look at me, still rocking the socket A :D

I might put an 8800GTS in my system if I can sell the 7900GT in my sig…anybody in here interested? I’ll be selling it voltmoded with a VF900 on it for $260.

Edit: Here's the Clawhammer + 8800GTS thread http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1119860

:) Yeah the old 3400+ Venice is going quite strong and does everything I need it to do so I'm not spending any more $$ on computer equipment anytime in the near future. My $$$ is going to be going toward home repair and getting my 1968 Dodge Polara 2 door coupe running so I can sell it and hopefully make some cash on the deal. My 69 road runner also needs a little bit of attention as well. I spent my money on computers at the beginning/middle of the year.

dang, if i had a 69 roadrunner i would be spending my cash on making that a tire burning machine :D

Heh - well it isn't the most powerful thing on the road but an estimated 450 hp at the flywheel isn't too bad. I've spent a good deal of $$$ "overclocking" it. :)

In my case, I kept the 754 setup since I need the money to finish settling in my new house and do some lawn stuff (I live in a brand new house so there is still things missing like unfinished basement, no grass and no stone steps). When I get enough money in the future, I will then ponder the options but I'm pretty sure to skip DDR2 and get on the DDR3 bandwagon.

Yes, I agree. AM2/DDR2 seemed to be a stop-gap measure with little improvement over s939 (which was a minor increase over s754 btw). AM3/DDR3 with Vista & DX10 will be the next big step up. I see no sense in wasting $$$ on present tech when I clearly won't benefit greatly from it.
