Love your socket 754?

Well guys, I'm back in it. I picked up an eMachine socket 754 board with the ATi Xpress 200 chipset. Should be badass for a folder. Now I just need to find a cheap ass OEM processor for it and I'm set (got the HSF with the board).

And old, you get 10 since you came afterwards. ;) If we compare links we can split hairs for last place, but I'm too tired/lazy to look 'em up.

Full Folding Ahead!

Hello fellow socket 754 owners.....
Just got my new proc and motherboard in the mail yesterday.....
What I should be getting by next week. (stupid tiger sent all my stuff and different times, and now one of the items is on backorder.
CPU: Sempron 64 2600+
Mobo: Chaintech SK8T800
Memory: (for now.... getting another 512mb stick soon) 512MB Mushkin green line. Pc 3200
Video Card: Chaintech GeForce 6600.

Hey I was on a very tight budget ^_^

^ Intresting starter! Welcome to the club! Hope you get some good results with those lol.

Damnit. Wanted to order the TForce Board along with an eVGA 7800gt, PSU, case and memory, but half of the stuff I want is out of stock at the Egg. That TForce board must be pretty popular.

Its probably a good thing, I just busted a couple of keys on my notebook's keyboard while making repairs to the power jack :(. Why must they make these things so difficult to disassemble?

Anyways, I'm still undecided as to what cooler I want to use. I was really thinking about the Arctic Cooling Freezer 64 Pro, I'm wanting to get a decent cooler <$35 that isn't to terribly loud. Anyone have any suggestions?

Thank you.
I have heard this mobo is %$@&! for overclocking, but hey, its my first time I dont want to fry it. =P

Yeah, for a Biostar board, that TForce is a big hitter from what I've heard, on both 754 and 939. 3.3v rail jumper on a cheap ass mATX board with a DFI-style color scheme and built-in Memtest, and a few extra memory timings....I mean it's not a DFI, but it's probably like 85% of the way there for like 50% of the price. Definately a nice LAN box board.

Full Folding Ahead!

the Freezer Pro ROCKS. its a good as HSF, and can be adjusted to mount perfectly for your case and airflow. otehr good mentions go to XP90 and a Panaflo from SVC.

I heard a rumor that a dual-core sempron is going to be released for s754, is this true?

I am now a diehard fan of S754, I have seen the LIGHT MAN!! :D

Just got my Sempron 2800+ 1.6GHz and Biostar M7 6100 mobo today and I decided to take it for a spin

sempy26vd.png

boom, 300x8, HT 3x, 133 memory divider and waalaa, 800MHz overclock to 2.4GHz
I love these things. My mobo is holding it back now, but im more than satisfied. :)

don't bank on it. budget will probably move to 939 as mainstream goes to AM2

I was able to get my 2800 sempy to 2650, but it took watercooling, 1.67Vcore, and unlidding to do it.

Is the move to an A64 3700+ s754 worth my time? I have a 3000+ right now.... I mean I just see no reason to put out for a 939 yet.

youll see a nice bump in speed and smoothness cause of the 1mb cache. i vote yes if you can find another goodass deal like they had before.

Yea, I miss the 1MB cache my p4 had. Ill be moving to dual core opty 165 goodness soon so its not a problem, lol.

rmed64 or anyone else for that matter,

How do the Semprons perform when gaming?? Next month is tax time so I'll be building a new rig with some parts of my current system thrown in...(mainly the optical drives and maybe the soundcard and possibly the harddrive)

Just curious,
thanks

Chappie

It performs great. At 2.4GHz, its superb even. Remember, they are Athlon 64/K8 architecture, so they have the basic 64 bit/on die memory controller just like them. Only difference is the cache size (mine is 256k L2 compared to most A64 which are 512k) and Socket 939 has dual channel, and the price (AMD sells Sempron 64 for much cheaper for the ocers like me :p) . I've done some testing, and I'd put my cpu around the capability of an Athlon 64 3500+ processor, which we all know are fast gaming processors.

they perform extremely well for their price and are only a tiny bit slower than the 512KB cores, sometimes faster due to controller enhancements. However in my experiance, the Hammer simply smashes them 1MB cache is really nice. You'd be surprised as to how much a differance the cache makes. In the ut2k3 benchmarks I think I got 80-100fps higher with the hammer vs the newcastle and semp. I wouldn't go below 256KB l2 with a sempron.

Hey,

thanks for the info!! I don't mean to be a PIA,,but can you give me some more info on how it runs??? I'm really into BF2 now and I also play alot of driving sims..rFactor and GTL.

IF I go with a Sempron I'll be able to get a higher end Videcard also...as a matter of fact I was looking at the 6800GS!! hehehe

Anyway, any specifics on gaming would be appreciated. framerates..etc...

thanks again,
Chappie

You will be able to play any game at fps above 60 easily depending on if you have a powerful videocard. With my setup, I get GREAT fps in BF2. Im talking 60+ all the time, even in 64 player servers with all the explosions etc. at 1024x768 res all on high. Lets just say, if you have a Sempron at my speed, you dont have to worry about the cpu bottlenecking you. Go for the highest GPU you can afford.

I only ran unreal tournament so I am unaware as to how bf2 reacts with k8's and differant amounts of cache. UT engines are very cpu dependent and I would even go as far to say that they're more cpu bound than video bound. Most other games are not at all like this, in fact there is usually very little differance between decently clocked cpu's (2.2 GHz+ for k8) once you hit 1280 res and add some aa in. However, since Im not familiar with bf2 and it's performance you're gonna have to wait, Im pretty sure someone will let you know soon. But Im betting it wont make much differance at all.

Hey guys,

Thanks for the info all!! really informative stuff...

Looks like I might be joining the Socket 754 club next month!!

cya,

Chappie

Got my new motherboard up and running in one shot. I'm happy to say the least. Now if only I had the desire to overclock.

I have an Epox NF3 board, and its okay, but you are much better off wih another DFI.

DOH! Broken laptop has put off my main system upgrade :(. I need to get it working properly first. Plus this will give me motivation to finish my M.S. and get a job. Then I'll go all out on an upgrade.

I am just going to get the Case and PSU as well as new cooling. I need those. Memory, mobo and videocard can wait.

i vote for a DFI refurb from newegg. as nothing comes close to the DFI. why not try to RMA it??

I just don't feel right RMA'ing something I overclocked.

That's understandable, however I don't think motherboards apply to that rule. Video card's and cpu's yes, however motherboards no. The options are in the bios, that is put on by the manufacturer, overclocking does not void your warranty. Hence, you can rma it with no guilty conscience.

Never thought of it like that. Truth is I've never had to RMA anything before. My hardware has always worked for me. I guess I have just been lucky the past few years! I am tempted to sell my graphics card and cpu and go 939/pcie.... I'm kidding, I'm kidding. :)
