Love your socket 754?

so now the important queston, hows it for overclocking!
Well, I'd try and answer that for you by the end of the week, but unfortunately, Australia thinks it's funny to not have stuff we want close to release date.

Hi
This seems the right place to post this:

So - anyone got any info about the chances of companies releasing BIOS updates to make the new mobile Newark chips work on the old s754?

Cheers
L

well, a dfi mobo will let it play with the newarks. also (cf) has some big news. i told him it would happen.

what is he going to 939?

Sweet. You think two 7800 gts would be too much for my 3700+ at 2.6? Anyways, the boss has ruled that if I spend anymore money on my computer, there will be hell to pay.

im gonna say 2x7800gt wont be too much for your 3700+ at 2.6ghz, as most SLI'rs are at 2.7ghz, and have 512k cache, so you got the upper hand.

Good to finally see one. :) I wonder how well it overclocks? And yeah, two 7800GT's in SLi run about the same as two 7800GTX's in SLi in almost everything....because they just need more CPU power. So if you really wanna SLi to SLi, two GT's would do well...and ur 3700+ overclocked would provide some good power. It'd probably the fastest 754 around the [H].

Guys I bid you farewell... I am no longer a legitimate member of the s754 club...

I bought a s939 AGP board and an x2 3800 to have fun with...

my newark 3700+ and DFI nf3 250gb is sitting in it's box on my table... I think I will try and sell it... I don't know.

It was sure fun though... when I first got s754 there was no s939 yet... hehe...

oh I wasn't in the database because I didn't want to take the chip out to get all the model numbers and such off of it...

I ran at 2.75 at 1.5v..... my HTT I couldn't get it to boot over 250...

but... I could clockgen that thing up to 2.9 stable with enough voltage...

I'll bet I could have pulled an eclipse and done a suicide screen for 3ghz... but really I was happy already with 2.75ghz and ram at 250mhz... hehe

I've had a Asus K8V and 3000+ Newcastle for some time now, but I'm getting a Socket 939 setup with a PCI-E 6600GT. All the parts should be here by tuesday. :D

amusingly, i may be going s939 with an opteron 144, provided that i can get a dfi board for cheap. i'll try to keep this clawhammer as my main rig though :D

yeah asus k8v deluxe... that is what I have...

What is the highest HTT you can get with that thing?

i would guess around 240 or around 270mhz, depending on your board's lock. there's one way to find out

I'll be joining the club by next week. I pulled the trigger on a BX Sempy 2800 ($76) and DFI nf4x Infinity ($86).
As soon as I get it running at stock speeds, the IHS is coming off.
We'll see how far this 76 buck chip will go under my Cascade.
My goal is 2700MHz.

A vanilla x800 ($159) will be pulling gpu duty, also to be water cooled and OCed. I wish gpu v-modding was achievable in bios.

eww via chipset! i had a via chipset board, it was harsh. stupid abit kv8-pro. maxing out at 270htt stable.
Gawd. I remember that one. Got it on the reccommendation of the [H], lol. I mean, sure, it was good for the 2800+ I got with it, but after I changed to the DFI, and realised that no, a 270htt was not my maximum, I swore I would never VIA again, lol.

It is with that pretty awesome new Abit thing...the *choke*...you know. That one. Ugh.

you mean the buying guides that [H] does? no offense to anyone, but i disagree with a lot of things in that guide. :p

it's in my sig.. and baron's sig too. :p
Ah, yeah. I know. No offense intended. I enjoyed your reviews so far. A paragraph of features, and the rest all on the overclocking is way more to my style. Not some footnote right at the end on just how well it went (Im looking at you, [H]ard :D ).
Oh, yeah. And are you accepting reviews submitted from general members?

i would like to, but due to honesty concerns, this is something i will have to say no to, sorry.

one option to consider: write up a review and post it in the forums, and we can link to it on the front page
thanks for the comments on the site though. it's our goal to make no-BS overclocking reviews, i'm glad it's working that way :D

Yeah, no worries. It's good. Hope it gets bigger.
Lemme know when I'm considered honest... ;)

haha, i hope so too :D
in the meantime, you're more than welcome to post stuff that is on your mind or you have tested in the forums, we'll do our damndest to help you out

Nice. I'll take that to heart. New purchases coming up soon....I'll let you know then.

I'm 3/4 of the way thru my TCCD Patriot XBL review for the site, which I'll post this week. I was going to finish it up today, but I had to watch the game with my grandpa today, then I played "computer technician" for a girl. :D I'm such a tool.

Expect a review (hopefully) before Tuesday's over...TCCD just sucks because of all of the voltages/timings required to "cover it all". But expect it to be as thorough as possible. As much as I liked my 754 rig, the nice part about the Venice is it's got a pretty strong memory controller for the money, so I can actually find the limits, unlike the clawhammer's somewhat-dated memory controller (which is perfectly fine for say, BH5/UTT...but not TCCD).

Lookin' forward to it.

me too actually :D

we've got some cpu reviews coming up soon too. baron should get his sempron review done eventually ;)
after that (or before?), baron and i both plan on getting opteron 144's to play with, and we'll write up a joint review on that. somewhere in there, ccu should manage to finish up his rig and have a few things to review too

Nah, it's going in my cooling loop....swifty mcw50 block.

No, was just commenting on your wish for BIOS-accessible v-modding. The Abit....*shudder* Fatal1ty X800XL allows it, lets you increase the voltage with a click of some switch at the back. Apparently, if you mod the BIOS, you can get up to 1.55/2.0v core/mem on it...so that sounds almost worth the money and embrassment of having someone's name on your already-expensive hardware.

I've still got one, maxes at 225, won't do 226 @ 1:1 although my RAM supposedly goes way higher according to Memtest.

I've got a comparison question:
I just got an A64 3200+ (754) and an Asus motherboard. I currently have a P4 3.0C and Abit IC7-G. Which would be the faster processor for gaming if I were to keep stock speeds?

Thanks!

Memtest stable does not mean Windows stable. Don't ask why, that's just how it is. ;) I can do DDR600 2.5-4-3 in memtest...i can't even do DDR600 3-4-4 in windows tho.

3200+ would be my guess.
