LOL! Let's see, he's got a 6950x and two Titan X's in his personal system. Not sure if he paid for it, I'm sure it's part of this business. But if he's running it's probably pretty good hardware. Really, I've been doing stuff a long time, like who hell builds PCs and doesn't know about price/performance ratios? Sometimes people just build the best they can and that's that. And the results are generally enjoyable.

You're taking price/performance ratios and including dual Titan X's and a 6950X in the same sentence?!

Sales of the 6950X are so low that not one of my wholesalers even keep them in stock, they're order only with a 2-3 day wait at minimum. Can't be that popular.

Of course they aren't popular, they were $1700 and no one would by them now because they are obsolete. All of the reviews blasted Intel over the price but NO ONE was critical of the performance last year.

I can assure you, they've never been in stock. Holding a $2500.00 processor in stock that offers literally no value for money is considered a liability to most stores.

Just tried to open a .docx file in Impress and it opened up Writer.

I just tried to open a .docx file in PowerPoint and it had a popup saying "The outline is too long to read in its entirety" and then tried to show a WORD document across 500 slides

I say try because it is embarrasing how it attempted to render a document page as a powerpoint slide: formatting, fonts, tables, images ...

Who would have thought opening the wrong fileformat would not do what you expect

I thought I was pointing out that LibreOffice was doing a proper thing here. It's very difficult to have these conversations especially in a place like this. Even when one points out something good they get blasted. It's all good though. People will just use what works for them regardless of the nonsense.

No one's getting blasted.

What you specifically need to take away from niab's comment is that you show such negativity towards Linux and users of Linux that people naturally assume that every comment you post is a dig against any system not developed by Microsoft. That's not the fault of anyone but yourself.

Of course you blast Windows folks, constantly. Even when they do things with Linux you've never touched. It's just hilarious to me when you go on and on about blind allegiance to Windows and Microsoft and praise all that Valve has done for Linux gaming. Then blast me for "bragging" about my PC and spending too much on gaming. And the company that encouraged me to buy this stuff and to get into VR? VALVe!

It's just fucking laughable to me!;)

Because you're postings wreak of sarcasm, even this one. It's childish and it appears that you quite simply can't help it. I'm sorry you're so insecure that you cannot post without some mention of laughing your arse off.

If you think the idea is so far fetched, even though every other manufacturer does it, why are you even posting in this thread?
You're being far ruder and hard headed than anyone else by a mile. How about you stop posting in this thread if you can't contain yourself? Linux is a nothing OS in the desktop space. Linux gaming is a niche of that. The dream is over, go home.

I correct users when they make incorrect blanket comments regarding Linux. Usually resulting in Windows users calling me, essentially, a liar and me spending the rest of the thread defending myself.

Furthermore I've never gone on any witch hunt regarding Valve and VR. As a whole I believe VR is not going to be a success for a vast number of reasons. That's just my own personal opinion, but I never once directed that at Valve.

Now see Heatlesssun, this is where discussions degrade, this is the perfect example.

I haven't been rude, not at all, and my thread has been dragged that far off topic is in danger of being closed just like all the threads before it - Yet here we have an attack, from a Windows user no less, based on nothing but the fact that I love Linux.

Of course you never directed that at Valve, that's my point. One of the main reasons I got into VR was because of Valve's support like a lot of people that are into PC VR currently. Like a lot of other people that buy games from Steam that don't work with Linux. But somehow it's blind faith to Windows and Microsoft. Because the products are being pushed by Valve/Steam.

You not getting that is why people say what they do. Not because they oppose Linux gaming. Valve supports Linux gaming. Great! Valve supports PC VR gaming. Great! Except Linux folks get all in a tizzy about VR. Even when their patron saint Valve is perhaps the biggest pusher of the stuff right now?

No one is being rude, they are simply pointing out issues with your position. It is Valve, not Microsoft that has tied people to Windows gaming. The fact that Valve's year to date releases have about 17% support on Linux when adding in support for VR, right, everyone is just blindly using Windows without any other consideration than Microsoft marketing. It would have nothing to do with Valve that pushes out TONS of non-Linux compatible games.

I never stated that I had a problem with the use of VR and the fact that Windows is naturally the more mature platform when it comes to such technology. I have a problem with you constantly mouthing off about VR in threads where no one is even interested in it in some vain attempt to substantiate some belief that gaming under Linux is a waste of time.

Steam is no more than a digital distribution platform run by Valve, it's the developers that flock to Windows, as Windows is the more mature platform under Steam - No one has ever disputed this point.

Fine, it's doomed. It's currently getting more games on Steam than Linux. I'll enjoy it while I can.:) Like a lot of other folks around here that are now buying Rifts because of the price.
I will definitely be wanting to try vr in the future (next year, hoping new hardware hits with higher resolutions). I have little doubt it is a big deal for gaming at this point. Vr is something of an oddity because you can't just video its use to sell it. However, user testimonials convinced me :).

And there's a number of titles available under Linux. No doubt VR under platforms other than Windows will continue to develop as time goes on.

Same here. The hardware just isn't there yet, neither the headsets (resolution/refresh rate/comfort) nor the GPUs (1080Ti SLI still isn't fast enough) to warrant the overspending*.

GPU power will go up, headsets will get better, and in a year or two it will be an incredible experience that even passes for affordable.

And if/when I do jump? It won't be on Linux :D (have to keep it on topic!).

[*I could build the rig and run VR today, but given the deficiencies and that I don't have a tremendous amount of time for gaming as it is, I'm not interested in jumping- yet]

Judging by the general market of low Linux compatibility on steam, I doubt that it will grow anywhere near as quickly...

I doubt that it will grow connected to an expensive, overpowered PC with leads plugged into said PC and proximity/motion sensors all over the room - The OS is irrelevant at this stage.

There's no doubt that, effectively, Windows is the development platform.

No one has debated the cost. But those expensive overpowered PCs have the power to deliver experiences not possible on those underpowered, cheap mobile devices. VR will be like anything else, there will be different levels of it based on cost.

There's no doubt that, effectively, Windows is the development platform.

There are nearly 1500 VR titles on Steam, only four run on Linux at this time and none for macOS to date though that support is coming out like Linux. Valve has already made Windows the PRODUCTION platform for PC VR. Linux and macOS will get 1500 VR titles no time soon.

I get that Linux folks will blast PC VR, that's expected. It can be an incredible experience. It's just something people have to try on a PC to get the point.

The link I posted shows 10 (9?) titles supported under Linux regarding VR with more to come. Windows, at this stage, is naturally, the development platform and that PC everything's connected to is holding VR back as it's a massive, expensive inconveniance.

Who's blasting VR? Some of us are simply over the way you use VR as some sort of deflection every time gaming under Linux is mentioned, and I see no reason to constantly keep highlighting how much your PC cost as no one's interested, but I see no one blasting VR.

I also don't believe VR was mentioned in the thread title.

Right around a 1 in 6-7 chance you will yak all over your shoes. So I suggest if you buy your VR online to also throw in a package of brown paper bags. Just in case you won the VR not for me ever lotto. lol

I guess alternately you could take some airplane sickness pills before hand.

Either way you go... plan ahead. If you do happen to be good to go and not a puker... make sure you keep the bags close to your machine anyway, when your frineds come over and want to check it out. At least one of them is going to paint your floor.

Really though this tech is dead until they come up with away to overcome the medical issues related to VR use. Making a ton of games where you stand still isn't really a great long term solution.

It's not only the vertigo that's the issue, there's the fact that our eyes aren't stupid. When the light is being emitted off a screen in close proximity to the face, yet the brain perceives depth to the image, it causes all sorts of issues - Many of which haven't even been studied in depth as yet considering long term effects.

I'm one of those that can stare at the passive 3D systems used in IMAX/Real3D/XD theaters all day, but get a headache no longer than an hour in using the active glasses that most home sets used.

I purposefully picked my TV for its passive implementation, but the loss of brightness and resolution is a pain; passive 3D doesn't translate so well from theater to home.

I can't say whether or not I'll be good with interactive VR systems, though given that the rendering target is 90FPS per eye, I'll probably handle it better.

And I still won't be doing it on Linux. ;)

I'm similar. 3D systems at cinemas give me a headache and massive eye fatigue, while VR gives me vertigo as well as headaches and eye fatigue. I also only ever used 3D on my hometheater a handful of times before becoming tired of it as the contrast issues were something I couldn't account for when calibrating the display device, I also just got over it after a while.

As a user of both Windows and Linux machines, if (and I consider that to be a big 'if') VR ever takes off and becomes affordable I'll try it under both Windows and Linux - After all, my Windows PC is specifically a gamer and nothing else.

If the dream is over we're left with a nightmare. Windows.

Windows is a sweet dream. Linux would be the nightmare to 99pct of users.

Poking my nose in here, but I don't necessarily agree here. Isn't Mac and Android based off of *nix? I think it could work, and could work very, very well, but it would literally need to be hammed down to a distro that always looked the same, operated the same, updated the same, etc. The exceptional variation of how *nix can be installed, administered, and customized I think is more harmful than helpful, at least for me.

No, they aren't desktop Linux, just use the a kernel. I agree the fragmented community and wild variations in it are harmful.

I have no care what you do or don't do. I'm not a mod :p.

Yeah, well the issue with these forums is that the leader doesn't moderate, once discussion has well and truly spiraled totally out of control, he bans. Even after the moderators have (rarely) taken care of a situation in a diplomatic fashion, he comes over the top and bans. When people complain of a problem with another user, no one actually appears to read the thread in question before taking action, the leader just bans whoever the complaint was about. Furthermore, it has to be said that I don't believe the issue lies specifically with the moderators as I've had discussions with them and they're great people for the most part.

So as far as the moderation of my own thread is concerned, I'll sure as shit close this thread if you cannot help but respect the sub forum your posting in here. Grow up.

Play nice. Otherwise, you will be producing a self fulfilling prophecy.

Well if that's aimed at me, how about we just lock the thread?

Discussion's way off topic anyway, as always. Perhaps discuss this issue in your hidden moderator's forum?

[EDIT] Discussed with Paul, all good, but this thread's skewed way too far off topic anyway. it was an interesting discussion while it lasted.
