LG L246W

The 8800GTS 640MB is enough for all current games and should be enough for the games coming out for the next year or so. That is without the need to lower the details much than for a few games that will be very demanding (like Crysis).
Yep. If need be you can lower the screen resolution to 1600x1200 or 1680x1050 and use the 1:1 option on the monitor to have it scale properly. I'll probably opt to lower the eye candy a bit before dropping the screen resolution.

I just exchanged a perfectly working samsung 245 for this panel. There is a lot of flicker in the panel, it looks like when you see a CRT monitor on television. The driver for the monitor is installed, and I just updated my video card drivers.

I am thinking this is something with the panel itself, but has anyone run across this, and if so, was there a fix for it?

I'm running winxp pro sp2, on an nvidia 7600GT, connected via the DVI-HDMI cable.

So annoying to have stuff not work the first time!

I reconnected the cables and tried a different power cable and turned it on, and for about 5 seconds it didn't flicker. Then it started again.

I think the menu of the panel itself does flicker.

The monitor's plugged into a Belkin UPS, and the previous samsung had no problems.

I'm thinking I just got unlucky. There's also a faint, but certainly recognizable dark tinted line across the bottom third of the panel.

Oh well, another trip into Best Buy!

Yep...if you're seeing flickering and a faint dark bar across the bottom, sounds like you got a bad monitor :(

I know what you mean about wanting stuff to just work the first time and it sucks when that doesn't happen.

YMMV with this, but the rep at my BB let me actually take the monitor out and hook it up to check for dead pixels and/or monitor defects, so I made sure I was buying one that was perfect.

I can see the flickering through my mobile camera..
image335te9.jpg

and also there's a very faint dark thick line on the center from side to side.visible only in dark shade or pure white.
Is that mean a bad monitor?

A flickering through your cell phone camera doesn't mean anything, just about any video camera when recording a display will show significant amount of flicker.

The dark bar is not normal though, and I can't really tell you why this happens.

Can anyone tell me if they notice a sound distortion when they hook up speakers through the monitors audio jack?

I have one of the new Xbox 360's with HDMI and have it hooked up to the HDMI input (on the monitor) and some Logitech speakers in the monitors audio jack. When I have the sound slighly above average, sound/music comes out slighly distorted.

Is that normal?

Unfortunately, ya. I had this problem when my headphone amp was too close to the monitor. I haven't gotten a replacement yet, but it is my opinion that the crap DVI-->HDMI cable is poorly shielded and a quality replacement will resolve.

I use the VGA to connecto my 360 so I Don't know, but, is it possible if you want to connect a 360 with the HDMI (or I guess a PS3), to get sound from different cables as you can with the VGA and component connections?

He's not using the included cable, since the DVI > HDMI cable does not carry audio.

(that being said, I'm sure the included cable is indeed crap)

Pleased to report that the second LG 246 I have seems to work like a charm.

That being said, it appears the default color configuration on this monitor compared to the Samsung is not as good. I need to toy with that a little more than the other one.

Certain parts of skin tones in high res pictures, do appear to be a little "blocky".

I'm using a normal HDMI cable since I have an 360 Elite (new premiums come with the HDMI slot now as well). Also the HDMI cable came packaged with my 360. But since the monitor doesn't have speakers I'm using Logitech speakers and plugging them into the audio jack on the left side of the monitor to get the sound for my 360.

The issue here is that the speakers sound distorted when they're turned up a little above average. It's not my speakers since I've tried hooking my other speakers through the jack and they also produce some distortion. I'm just wondering if anyone here (with a HDMI 360 or a PS3) can hook their consoles up to the monitors HDMI slot and some speakers to the audio jack and tell me if they also get some distortion.

I'd just like to know if this is normal or if I'm doing something wrong.

Edit: it's easily noticable in Madden 08 - while the sports broadcaster talks during the game. Also in Halo 3 when the music is playing with the sound turned up.

I'm assuming you have tried lowering the volume of the original audio source, ie: the 360 and then raising the volume on your computer speakers?

I'm not sure if that would apply, if the 360 audio feed is "line level" then distortion from over-amplification would likely not be the cause, unless the monitor does it on it's own. Which I doubt, since I don't think it has any form of audio control. I was surprised, pleasantly, that it passed audio signals out at all.

The 360 doesn't have much audio control (ie: being able to raise/lower volume internally). At least not to my knowledge. The only option under audio is digital output options.. I'm not really a techie so I'm not really sure if that may be the issue or not. They allow me to change from 3 options: Digital Stereo, Dolby Digital 5.1, and Dolby Digital with WMA Pro. Currently it's set on Digital Stereo but I have cycled through all of them to see if the distortion would go away - and they still exist - primarly on highs (though they still exist for lows).

probably a stupid question, but has anyone tried hooking up a digital cable box to this baby through component for some HDTV action?

When I had it, I connected one via DVI > HDMI and component.

Great on both counts but better on DVI > HDMI, because it was 1080i/p with exact 1:1 pixel mapping, whereas the component it close. Compared to other monitors it was the best with component and a dig. cable box.

Highly recommended.

I just purchased the 22" LG from Circuit City yesterday for $350. I'm so far very pleased with the monitor. I'm posting here in the 24" thread because of my thoughts when deciding between the 22" and 24".

I previously owned a 24" Sony CRT which recently died. I figured I would get another 24" but then I started to think if I really needed the 24" since it's nearly 2x the cost of 22" models. I went to Circuit City with the intent to buy the 24" but left with the 22" and almost $250 more in my wallet. I chose the 22" because I almost always had to run FPS games in 1600x1200 since the newest games stressed my 8800 GTX too much that FPS became so low and unplayable. I didn't see a point in buying a 24" 1920x1200 when I eneded up running the games at 1600x1200. So now I can just run the native 1600x1080 on this 22" while maintaining a high level of eye candy, particularly in Crysis multiplayer beta.

Sure I give up on some desktop space when using general apps but I didn't buy this monitor for day to day use. I mostly game so this just made the best choice.

Can someone please recommend me some good software for color and picture calibration?

I really have no clue when it comes to perfecting the picture. I have always just gone with the default out of the box but I would like to now improve over default. From what I can see, my 22" has no dead pixels.

ok chaps as i said some posts before my monitor suffered from sever banding , to the point that it was equal to a TN panel (226BW).

Now , i have a 8800GTS 320 mb card , so i have had thoughts that it was maybe my card or the drivers of nvidia. So went and bought a Sapphire 2400pro for 40 $ to see if my thoughts were true , pluged the card in loaded its drivers and...

...OMFG the display was MILES better and showed minimal banding . thats i didnt touch a setting in the OSD, loaded catalyst 7.9 and ran DPT tests. i cant believe a card that is 10 times more expensive than this 2400pro displays a far inferior picture, thing is my LG now looks awesome - i had thoughts of sending it back before this.

Apart from Crysis, what games are you having problems with at 1920x1200? Cause I have a 8800gts 640mb and I have zero problems.
Also, what fps do you consider low and unplayable? For me it is in the 20s and below.
What is your CPU?

This game I play forces 800x600 resolution. The full setting streches the image and the the 1:1 setting makes it the size of the stamp. My Westy used to put black bars on the left and right side. Is there anyway to accomplish that?

What's your graphics card??

Just an update.

They mail you a letter via regular mail with a DHL label and green instruction sheet. That took about a week, little slow. But not bad. You can send it in any box, as long as it has proper padding. I used my product box. My hope is that they send the new one in a new box, or at least a refurb box.

Anyhow, the DHL label is a 2 day service. Which seems pretty accurate. They get it tomorrow. From there I will let you know how long it takes them to turn it around and get one to my door. At that point i will post a timeline detailing the process for future reference.

Hey Everyone,

Not sure if this was mentioned but the LG L246WP is on sale at Fry's for $499.99. The price will be good until 10/16/07... I have no affiliation with Fry's but I just thought that anyone that was interested would like to know... I picked mine up tonight so I'll be busy this weekend testing out the new panel...

Though I don't have the exact same model, do you know of any way of accessing the hidden menu, if there is one? I would like to check some info.

Do they look ok? I have no idea lol.

Apart from Elapsed time (I think) and White Balance, what do the other do?

i think about "Nvram Initial OFF" more like what "Factory profile reset!" does.

Yeah, it sounds like it.
I wonder what the ADC are and that weird Aging thingy.

This is mine.. i know this has been asked before, but whats ur optimal settings for brightness and such? this thread is way too long to read through it all.
=)

AFTER I followed the instructions for monitor calibration in the nvidia control panel-monitor calibration, and then tweaken it a bit on my own, under sRGB, contrast is greyed out at 100, though not sure if it is real number, and brightness I have at 21.

Well my dream 24-inch LG monitor came to an end this past weekend. Sunday morning I got up and turn on my monitor and what greeted me was a nice yellow vertical line from the very top to bottom of the monitor on the left side. :(

I first thought it might be the graphics card so I switched to my Mac Mini but it booted up with the same yellow lines. Can it be the dvi to hdmi cable? If not I am going to have to RMA this sucker. :( Damn, and I live in Hawaii. I have to buy replacement plans for my high end purchases.

Has anyone else encounter a vertical yellow line on their LG monitor? Damn, I still have to RMA my 24-inch Gateway too. Ugh.

I just ordered one of these based on this thread (and other opinions posted elsewhere).
I originally had an Acer 24", but it's a TN panel and driving me crazy!

Hope this monitor is as awesome as you guys say it is... It's my first non-TN.
:p

you will NOT regret your switch. :)
just use sRGB mode and tune the rest as you will find in this Thread

Is there any difference between the L246W and the L246WP-BN? All the stores have the latter one.

CRAP! I must have bought mine there days before they put it on sale... Is the price still good? I'll go get a 2nd one if so...

I checked Frys just now and it's still $499.
But they're out of stock. You still might be able to purchase it now for the sale price, and they will ship it later.

Oh wait you're talking about the online Fry's.... I got mine from the physical store here in Phoenix... I'll call em I guess and see how much it is in store.

Just called, still $599 in store and they won't match the website price :(

I just got this monitor today... maybe im being paranoid but... you know how the actual visible screen doesnt always cover the whole area surrounded by the bezel and there is a really small black area between the bezel and the visible screen? it feels like there is more of a black area separating the visible screen from the bezel of the monitor. Anyone else notice this? It's more pronounced on the top...

also, in vista, what are people's settings for brightness on the monitor, and the settings in the nvidia control panel?

Tabs,

Sorry for the late reply... I think Fry's could have refunded you the difference had you found out in time. If you bought yours only days before the sale, I'm surprised they didn't even mention it to you. Most of the time, if an item is going to go on sale, the Fry's associate would give me the sale price especially if it's a day before... Oh well, next time...

Sounds like you are running it under a lower than native resolution and there is some scaling going on.
OR, that you use the VGA or Component cable or VGA connection on your graphics card and you need to fix the geometry yourself.

First make sure you are running at 1920x1200. Then the rest and let us know.
