LG L246W

By the way, I'm sure this has been brought up before...but the best way I found to calibrate this monitor, and most monitors without something hardware based is here:

http://www.lagom.nl/lcd-test/

I set the monitor to sRGB, then go into my nvidia control panel and adjust each color individually for the first color bar test...then I use all colors and adjust contrast/gama for the other tests.

It helped me pull awesome results out of this monitor. Give it a try!

ok got the monitor replaced as the old had like 12 defective pixels , the previous was made august 2007 and the one got now as replecement is build December 2006...

leaving everything at default

the DEC 06 one is lighter in terms ok weight than the AUG 07 one
The dec 06 has more pleasant colors to my eye
the dec 06 is also less painfull to the eyes (better brightness settings?)
the menu buttons are located at the right corner of the monitor , the AUG one had them at the left corner.

but its made in 2006 and its almost 9 months old now. should i send it back or no?

Do you change your wife/husband because you can get a younger one?
If it works, what is the problem?

Hey guys,

This thing just came in yesterday and its giving me a little grief as far as calibrating it with the CP. I have it sitting on sRGB with brightness of 25 but when I set the gamma from 9% to 48%, like some have suggested to do, it goes extremely white and is impossible to look at. Adjusting the contrast to 55% and red, blue and green's individual brightness to 50, 52, 42 works perfectly. I'm curious if Nvidia has tweaked the gamma control slider since the last few member's recommendation here?

Gamma might be more dependent on your graphics card. Use something like Photoshop or an image (Google it) for adjusting gamma to 2.2. If it's too dark then shoot for 2.0 or 1.8.

Just bought myself a LG L246W-BN over the net.
Now I just have to wait.. and wait.. for it to arrive.

another one joined the club
i got LG L246W-pn.
i had HP w2207 so i was afraid i will not bear the matte Anti-glare screen after the glossy.!.
bu ti was wrong...
this LCD is amazing, love it.

except one thing...there's a light bleeding "up to the right like 1cm width and narrowed to the down for 1 inch only visible with dark screen, other than that hard to see it unless i look for it.
i think this is because the bad handling by the UPS cause my bother bought it for me and tested it will., so. will this go with the time which i hope...or will never go then i should ask to replace it?

and...how is the return policy with LG ?will they send me a replacement then i send them the one i have or what?

I never had to use LG support, but at least the local one (Greece) from what I heard is very very good. What country are you in?
BUT, I did call them once for something that used to appear on the screen. They asked for details (name, address etc). The woman on the phone asked me to test the monitor on another PC and if the problem remains to call them to arrange for a quick replacement. (their words).

I am using LG support for one of mine. It is way less bright than my other one at the same brightness. About 100 cd/m2 less, even at max brightness. So I am getting a new one.

They are mailing me a shipping box with pre-paid label and I mail it back to them. They send me a new one, free as well. They do have advance replacement, but we all know how that works and since I have two I didn't see the need to do it.

I will let you know the quality of the one I get back. Overall I am impressed, it took less than 15 minutes to get it all setup including wait time. Very impressive indeed.

Went with this monitor tonight at Fry's. Looks amazing right out of the box but I know there's a bunch of calibration and crap that I can do to get it looking even better. Is there a comprehensive guide on what to do somewhere?

Thanks,
Ryan

I am sure others will disagree, but what I found great was to use Nvidia's control panel monitor calibration tool and just follow the steps there. Just place the monitor under sRGB and the rest.
Monitor looks much better that way IMO.

Is 1920X1080 the best you can do with a 360 into this monitor? (Pro system with VGA cable) It looks a little off to me compared to how crisp my PC looks on it and I think it might have to do with that missing 120 pixels in the vertical.

If y pick 1080p then go to the monitor's menu and choose the ARC "original". That way you get two small black bars top and bottom and the picture is perfect. Just also make sure you choose in the xbox 360 display menu 1080p not i.

Oh sweet, thank you! That looks much better... I think this one's a keeper now. Might go pick up a 2nd one I think,

Another question for you guys.

Is it common on all these 24" displays to see a slight shift in the colors at the edges of the screen as you move your head a small amount from side to side? Like looking at the forum here with the browser totally maximized, the grays and blacks on the edges get a noticable amount lighter as I move my head a few inches to either side... Just wondering if that's something specific to the type of panel in this monitor or if all of them do it?

Yea, I see that slight color change...and I originally noticed it when looking at this forum too.

Hmm... so from what I understand S-IPS panels don't have this issue right? Does anyone make a 24" S-IPS?

Alright so this is best picture quality I'm gonna get then from anything reasonably priced right? Guess I can live with some slight color changing on the sides if so... It kicks the living crap out of my old CRTs at least. :D

thanks BlueMak and kmirvers too for your comments.
it was very helpful.
i bought mine from CC.

so, I want to know about the time period that LG support cover in case of any things bad discovered in LCD, so their replacement is for a new one and not a refurbished, is it 60 days or 90 days?

another thing,,i don't like the White too much in sRGB mode, it's more like 6500k case i hate this color mode!.
i saw the white color in hp w2207 which i had previously, the white was impressive,is there any setting that can make the white really look pure white?

last thing :)
can any one test this.

make this color in full screen "70,70,70" and look carefully to the center of screen.
i want to know if your can see this color clean on entire screen or not,
i see here some slight distortion, looks like a weak light so the color become a little dimmed. with a very slight thick dimmed line crossing the screen from side to side
i want to know is this a problem or just a common thing?cause i can realize it with a dark shade color only if i focus although it's very slight.

thank you alot.

--------
i just played with NV panel and i got this
Bri(R) :45
Bri(G) :42
Bri(B) :50
contrast:45
as i think gave me good white And gray level, nor very accurate cause it's done by eye only!.
any one have better result...

Sorry for the barrage of questions, but I've got another one now:

I have a Vista/XP dual boot. The monitor looks great in sRGB mode in Vista. I tweaked everything in the Nvidia control panel etc...

I just booted to XP for the first time since getting it, installed the inf and color profile etc... It looks totally different in XP vs. Vista. Everything is way too bright and washed out, even with the gamma and brightness pulled all the way back in the Nvidia control panel. The same settings I'm using that look great in Vista look horrible in XP.

Is there something different about the way XP handles this stuff? How can I even fix this if all the way to the left is still too bright and washed out?

Thanks again,
Ryan

Well, if the same settings don't have the same outcome under different OSes, then...change them till they look allright to you?

Not sure where to change individual colours apart from under the Adjust VIDEO colour settings.

BUT, under the Adjust desktop color settings, and All channels, I have these:

Sliders:
Brightness 49%
Digital Vibrance 26%
Contrast: 50%
Image Sharpening: None
Gamma: 10%

Under the Adjust Video Color Settings I have the following
Brightness, Contrast, Hue, Saturation all at 50%
Gamma is disabled at 0%
RGB Gamma all at 26%
Edge encancement and Noise Reduction at 0%
Correction: 7300K
The thing about Adjust Video Color Settings is that since I have different settings for All Channels (top of this post) then my GUESS is that they are irrelevant.

If I "click" the key on the monitor to change brightness I get the following numbers:
The "sun" which I guess is brightness at 15 and the "moon" which I guess is contrast, at 100.

I got all the above numbers by using the Run Display Optimization Wizard in the nvidia control panel ONLY. I followed by letter the instructions there and this is what i got. All under monitor's sRGB selection.
Now, this looks great for my eyes, but it might not for yours.

Blacks are super black, movies look fantastic, font and desktop look nice, crisp and clear, and games look better than ever.

That's the problem - taking them all the way down still looks way too bright and washed out. With the sliders all the way off I'd say it's at least 2X as bright as it is in Vista with the sliders at 50%.

That sounds more like a driver issue in XP than it does a monitor problem....

What video card are you using? If it's an ATI, I've had that happen before where it starts super bright and washed out and you have to go into your color control panel through Catalyst Control and there's a large button at the top that says something like Revert to ATI colors or something to that effect. It's been awhile since I used Catalyst Control Center, but I used to have that too bright washed out problem and that always fixed it for me.

It's an XFX GeForce 7800GTX...

I'm gonna try reinstalling the drivers in XP I guess... didn't have this problem with my old CRTs though, they looked the same in both OSes.

What should I have the hardware brightness and contrast set to. Right now it's 41 on the brightness and 100 on the contrast.

RE: Washed out color in XP

If you don't have the latest Nvidia drivers, there may be a bug that causes the color to be washed out. This happened to me the first time I plugged this in via the HDMI to DVI cable. Was ready to puke. Couldn't calibrate this to save my life, even trying the suggestions in this thread.

I don't guarantee this is the only fix, but it worked for me.
Run regedit and look in "HKey_Local_Machine\Hardware\DeviceMap\Video" and note the GUID in brackets { } at the end of the entry titled "\device\video0"

Then browse over to "HKey_Local_Machine\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Video\{GUID}\0000
where {GUID} matches the number you saw above.

Open the entry under the "0000" folder and see if there is a DWORD called "VMRCCCSStatus". If its there it should have a hex value of 3. If not create this entry and give it this value.

Or... try the latest driver for your card. That might automatically enter this value.
Made a world of difference in what I was seeing with my LG.

I am using the Samsung 245B right now. My first impression after doing the requisite brightness lowering was.......I like it!

Now I'm thinking the LG is really the better way to go.

Gaming is a big thing for me, granted since I'm not playing on the best hardware right now I tend to stay away from the ultra titles such as bioshock.

Gaming on a 24 inch widescreen is so much more engrossing than it is on my previous 21 inch CRT, let me tell you.

In games, my only complaint really has to do with the viewing angle problem on the Samsung. Since it's a TN, the top and bottom have the appearance of not being lit properly. I know the LG will be a lot better in this regard.

Not to mention the LG actually has a rotate mode, this Samsung can only slightly rotate, just to adjust it, not a portrait view.

(circuit city has the LG on sale right now, so it's the same price as the samsung)

What I'm wondering is, is there any reason why I wouldn't like the LG for gaming? Is it a lot slower than the samsung is, or anything like that?

The LG is actually one of the best LCDs you can get for gaming provided you have a video card strong enough to run at the higher resolutions. However, it scales extremely well to 1680x1050 and pretty well to other, smaller, widescreen resolutions.

My video card is nothing fancy, a 7600GT, but it runs the games I am currently playing very well. I'll be upgrading just about everything in a few months though.

Thanks for the feedback though!

Well, I went back to Fry's tonight and got a Huey Pro calibrator - made a really incredible difference - the screen looks absolutely perfect to me now. Used it on my MacBook too.

I'm gonna try that registry thing in XP as I'm still getting the super washed out colors there tho, even with the Huey.

probably a stupid question, but has anyone tried hooking up a digital cable box to this baby through component for some HDTV action?

what kind of graphics card would i need to play games like, conan, counterstrike/dod source and such on the LG? Is the expensive 8800gtx the only way to go (assuming I'd go for the native 1920x1200, or could I settle with 8800gs 640mb or even 8800gs 320mb?

great question btw walie. i'm just wondering the same thing. ;)
maybe we're both stupid then. ;)

The 8800GTS 640MB is enough for all current games and should be enough for the games coming out for the next year or so. That is without the need to lower the details much than for a few games that will be very demanding (like Crysis).

ok, this is cscary.
While I was correct that the LG L245WPM uses PMVA, I just checked the German site and it says the L246WH uses TN panel!!!

Guys I posted this on another thread. I thought that all the difference between my LG L245WPM and the L246 models was where the buttons were placed or something like that. According to the german site the L246WH uses TN panel!
