There is a new study out that says LCDs are a growing risk to children….when they tip over and fall on them. Quick, pass a law.

The increase correlated with the popularity of ever-bigger flat-panel televisions that Americans have brought into their homes in that time, along with the entertainment centers and narrow, less-stable stands to hold them. Injuries from televisions alone accounted for nearly half of all injuries related to falling furniture during the study period — 47 percent.

As a parent that successfully raised two children, I understand that I must safety-proof my home when you have little children. Outlet covers, cupboard door locks, baby gates and a safety cable to the mount hole on the back of the LCD TV when wall mounting isn’t an option.

Always safety proof your home if you have small children.

Yeah, most, if not all of these TVs have a safety cable mount on the back. A parent not using it is their own fault. Some of the stands for the larger TVs can be kind of chintzy, also.

Oh, god. Now we'll end up with 1" thick LCD's with stands the size of volkswagens.

My LCD cost over $1800, my kids tip my shit over they better god damn die or I'm gonna kill 'em!

p.s. I don't have kids... cats yes... and yes I would rather my cat died than my tv got broke! :)

My Sammy DLP doesn't have one of the safety cable mounts so I went with SixtyWattMan's plan instead... I do the same with everyone that visits the house so the kids don't feel like I singled them out. :)

wall mount the tv?

Well, it's not as if we need children to maintain the population or sustain the human race or anything, so I say "oh well!"

You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

waterproof = impervious to water, so...

This comment is aimed at people who do and don't have kids, please read only your section.

To those who don't have kids:
Natural selection at it's finest. Darwin should be proud!

To those who do have kids:
Watchout for the little ones! Those things are really top heavy, and this makes a great excuse to wall mount!

assuming your children don't bypass those safety features. I don't have children myself but have two small nephews (2 & 4), they remove outlet covers, climbed over baby gates, removed the latches off the the fridge and stoves. Only ones that actually work are the cabinet locks and some of the door locks. However there was some we got they that they use to take apart, open the door, then put them back on. Hell they managed to flip over an older floor style tv. One got in the front and pulled down, the other in the back and pushed up. Not sure why they did it, but it was enough for them never to be left alone around a tv again.

That said, an 27 in LCD tv is MUCH lighter than a 27 inch CRT. My 27 inch CRT weights over twice what my 37 inch LCD does.

I wouldn't mind if LCDs had base anchor mounts, similar to the standard-sized VESA mounting holes. I would mount it down to the stand and that could help protect it from tipping over during an earthquake.

No, they were designed by the electronics corporations (primarily Japanese and Korean). The factory laborers, wherever they are, built them to specification.

We need more regulation and licensing to purchase TV's. I mean 47% of children were killed by falling TV's.

A recent study has revealed that peoples stupidity and carelessness is what have killed them since the beggingin of the human race.
Seems to me that no matter how much science and technology you put into those specimens. The person that carries the gene of stupidity will find a way to wipe their genes out of existance.

First off: A 27" LCD killed a kid? I dont think a 27" could kill a house cat.
Second: A lot of people do not buy the TV stand that was made for the LCD. Some are stupidly expensive. Because of this you have to McGuyver ring some restraint device which most people won't do.
Third: “Grownups have taken all the fun out of being a kid, just to save a few thousand lives. It’s pathetic. What’s happening is, these soft, fruity baby-boomers, are raising a generation of soft, fruity kids, who aren’t even allowed to have hazardous toys, for Christ’s sakes. Shit. What ever happened to natural selection? Survival of the fittest? The kid who swallows too many marbles, doesn’t grow up to have kids of his own. Simple as that! Nature knows best. Nature should be able to kill off the weak and sickly and ignorant people, without interference from batting helmets and airbags. “ - George Carlin

George Carlin, such a master of words.
The human race is doomed because of "intellect" Intellect has surpassed evolution and natural selection. No longer is it survival of the fitest, it's survival of everyone because it would destroy our fragile little hearts if a kid died because it and it's parents are to stupid to take care of it.

I think that is the contrary.
The intellect of some has saved the lives of many that aren't supposed to survive. Ergo Population Explosion-Echological Problems-Terrible Truth.

But, as this case shows, no matter what, stupidity and lack of fitness to survive will eventualy overcome whatever intellect puts in its way.

The only thing that worries me is that Terrible Truth: The Government of the Ungovernable.
Haven't you noticed that lately every law that comes forward is some sort of restraint to try to control those who are either too stupid, too irresponsible or posses some other unfitable characteristic to survive. In the process, those who are supposed to survive have to suffer the loss of their freedom and as a plus have to cope with more and more of those who aren't supposed to be here on the first place?
This my friends is the most dired consequence of Socialism and is what leaves a country in its ruins. Cuba is a very good example of that. Most of the people that were worth something are not there anymore. Venezuela is turning out to be the same thing.
So say hello you all to Big Brother, he's coming for you.
This is why I hate Technocracy so much, despite being an Enginner. As some say here, nothing surpases mother nature.
If I were you I'll get ready to survive.

I've got a 4 1/2 year old, and a 1 1/2 year old, both are climbers, I spent the $200 and an afternoon to mount my 52 inch Visio on a wall mount anchored to two wall studs.

Comon LCDs killing kids? I had an entire dresser PLUS Big screen TV fall on me when I was stupid enough to climb up there instead of asking an adult to help me or find a remote.

But yeah, parents child-proofing their shit wouldn't hurt.

With that kind of behaviour, I think that you should not waste your money on safety precautions anymore, just get a pair of handcuff and then find a pole... ;)

That's overkill, just screw that stuff into the sheetrock, it will hold.
:D

pritty simple actually.. i have 5 kids (7 and younger)..

i taught them all to not play in the lounge. and if they watch tv to sit on the chair or go play in their room or outside. there is no climbing or monkeying around in the lounge where the tv is.. that is where i entertain adults...

the first few years simply require a lot of work and constant supervision and training. not to climb or play in lounge. not to play in the kitchen and to leave when i get things out the oven.

it means parents are not supervising their children for that to happen.. children dont raise them selves.. it takes parents to raise them...

It's hard to kill kids with LCDs.

Mom always said "Don't sit so close to the TV" Maybe put some orange cones on the floor and some safety tape on where the fall zone would be at.

Hmmm... boob tube.... little kids.... maybe a vote to just say no to breast feeding?

Always safety proof your home if you have small children.
Conversely, always safety-proof your children if you have a small house.

can't stop darwinism. doing the world a favor if a kid loses to an lcd tv...

....

Isn't it strange that those who profess such a strong belief in evolution/survival of the fittest are the very ones who tend towards making all of those micro-managing laws?

Most LCD are mounted per the VESA standard either through the MIS-D or the MIS-E spec. If not, then they are mounting on heavy steel bases. How are these things being tipped over or are they falling off of their wall mounts?

To everyone preaching survival of the fittest and natural selection: that's the worst fucking thing I've ever heard. If you can honestly watch a child die because his curiosity led him to climb onto a TV, you need serious psychological assistance - now. As if the child was supposed to understand Newton's laws of motion from birth, and since his parents never explained the dangers of climbing things, its perfectly fine for him to die. Right. I guess emergency services should be abolished as well; after all, those who cannot defend themselves should go ahead and die. Love, compassion, kindness: those things interfere with natural selection! We can't let that happen!

Population problem? Yeah, there is a population problem: we have far too many arrogant elitist assholes who don't give a shit about anyone in this world except themselves (and "the species"). Why don't you guys just go kill yourselves? In a world with too many people, it's the logical thing to do.

I had a cat once, he use to like to sit atop of my Sony G400 monitor, then one day I wake up hearing him caugh up a hairball while sitting on the monitor, a loud sizzle and one of them died, the other got sent to the pound!

I have never heard of nor seen anything about a safety cable. I have a 32" LCD and one kid, she is 18 now, if she pulls it over on top of her I will have to send her to drug rehab!

Seriously. Before LCDs if the TV toppled it was more the fault of the TV stand because a CRT has a low center of gravity ( however its weight is more to the front) compared to todays LCDs which is tall an top heavy. I guess now the liability lies more with the TV makers and less on the TV stands, but either way it is up to the parents to child safe there home, not the lawmakers!
