Just bought an Alienware

I added up similar parts if not the exact same parts on newegg, and the price WITH windows xp sp2 + HL2 + Samurai case came out to just under $1900. WITHOUT the monitor. Basically, i paid 200-300 more dollars for a world-renown brand without the hassle of me having to build it myself. I didnt get an AMAZING deal, but I'm pretty sure I didnt get "ripped off". Estimated ship date: 5/17/05. Pictures coming as soon as I get it.

edit:

also, newegg price doesnt include cables/quality HSF etc

So, he does know how, he just chose not to.

P.S. I like pictures too ;)

I know man .. I was like are people in a hurry. They can't read threads especially when it's only 2 pages. Come on now .. READ

the system is nice. Good choices, it's expensive, but not only do you not have to put it together you can't really mess around with it, which sucks.

That's why I like building my own pc. I can move it to another pc and not risk losing warranty.

It's a good thing you bought the system with that MIR or else it would've been a BAD investment.Although it's expensive at the moment you will still have to pay interest on the original price until you get that rebate.

Well goodluck with the system and when you post the pictures, post it in this thread as to avoid another flame thread :p

90 days no interest :)

btw, same computer configured without the monitor is 1,791.00 AR (xp pro + hl2). less than what I could build it for with exact same parts from newegg.com :)

Can you get this without an OS installed?

Btw Finch, when did you build yours? Parts have gotten cheaper of course, so if you built a comparable system 6 months ago, then try searching for prices now and comparing.

I built mine on Tuesday :) Most of it is arriving today (monarch and zipzoomfly were slow as hell to ship and didn't get the stuff shipped until yesterday).

Mine is comparable, but it's difficult to compare exact, since mine's AMD. Here's what I got:

4000+ San Diego
DFI LanParty UT SLI-DR
2 x 1Gb Corsair Value Select
Maxtor SATA 250Gb 16MB Cache
Lian-Li v1000
NEC 3250a DVD
Enermax Noisetaker 485w
Thermalright XP-90C w/ Panaflo L1A 92mm & Arctic Silver 5
XFX 6800gt PCI-E

I spent $1821 including shipping, by shopping around at 4 online stores - zipzoomfly, monarchcomputer, newegg, and jab-tech.

If you add a second optical drive, Win XP pro, HL2, and a $500 monitor onto that, it's about $2600. Not far from what he paid.

Like I said, I think my parts are in general a little higher quality, but if you were to sit at both our computers and do a real world test, I think they'd be remarkably similar.

Which actually adds up to a lot because Alienware uses the copper Zalman 7000 (the expensive one) and rounded cables.

I bought two alienware computers before starting to build my own, parts of one are now the heart of my daughter's comp. My self-build is housed in my first alienware custom case (chieftec) and uses the optical drives from that first comp. My second alienware is much sexier and is still original less an upgraded video to now a 6800GT. Alienware does build good stuff, no doubt. They tend to use good parts. They tend to be expensive. I HATE THEIR CUSTOMER SERVICE. IT SUCKS. There I got that off my chest. I think you will be happy with your alienware, i just hope you dont need them for anything after the sale, because they are a bit hard to get in contact with. There were no rounded cables in my most recent alienware, built 12/03, not even an option. :(

IDK, I'm not particulary a fan of their Desktops, but I'd drop down the $ for the Laptops in a heart beat :p. Have fun with the new toy.

Alienware are not bad, they carry a slight premium, but they use quality components and do perform well no matter what you have come to believe.

Oh my god. Immature people here. Just congratulate him. It's apparent that those who flamed him for getting an Alienware actually never got, used, or tried an Alienware system previously. I have and I say, "Have so much fun with your Alienware."

My Alienware I bought over three years ago came in the house and I loved it so much. Their build quality was fantastic and the wiring was unrivaled by most people's builds. Whenever I ran into a problem, their services actually was very good albeit slightly slow. But once you reach that guy, he's like your personal buddy for a session. Actually made me feel good. The system was flying fast for its time too. And when I had a hard drive fail, an Alienware on-site technician came in and fixed just about everything up. I asked a lot of questions as well and he was pretty professional about it too.

My experience? Thumbs up.

Basically, I concluded that paying for an extra premium is all about the service they provided. The parts they sell is actually just as competitive as any other companies but their service is exceptional. And I still treat my 3 year old plus Alienware as my main gaming system. It's still fast. Faster than most people's systems here.

Of course I paid quite a bit for it before-- $3,500 dollars. :p

Congrats.....hope you like it. I was looking into getting one but then my friend told me about building so I am now going to build my own. With his help.

Yea grats on the new rig. Dont pay any attention to all the E-Thugs that post here.

Who cares about rounded cables? With SATA being primarily used for everything now, the only IDE devices you *might* have in your system would be optical drives. Besides, Alienware system builders use the "art" of cable folding to keep everything inside very neat and tidy.

To the OP, congratulations on your purchase and don't let the human torch flame-boys get you down. You bought want you wanted with your money.

i meant the price has to be rough on the wallet...what i said was not flaming

Why do some of you morons flame? Hes getting an equally fast system as some of the people on here. So what if he has to pay some more money. HES PAYING FOR IT, NOT YOU, GET OVER IT. If I had the money then I would buy an alienware over building my own, less stress IMO. Also you have to thnk about the time your going to spend building the system, then customizing it to ur likings (Overclocking, programs you like, etc...) Time = Money.

whoa.....slow down.... i wasnt bursting into flames....I made a statement plain and simple.....if you read the WHOLE thing youd realize that Ive had TWO alienware systems, and just made a remark that neither had round cables....ok??? i hope the alienware works well for him.

I read your entire post, I also didn't say you were flaming anyone. I was just stating that the point of rounded cables are to assist with keeping the inside of the case tidy to enhance airflow. But if Alienware systems are built using their own cable management techniques, then who cares about rounded cables? Especially since there is going to be only a few IDE devices left...

calling someone a moron is flaming (what you did) saying that something cost alot of money is personal oppion wich is not flaming

didnt mean to offend anyone. :D Round cables would be very cool nonetheless

No offense, but why would some one who didn't want to be bothered with spending a day or two researching and building a PC themselves, be on a forum dedicated to hardware enthusiasts. I don't have a problem with you being rich and not really care too much about what's in your PC, I can certainly understand that, but why would you come here? The only thing we talk about is just what you spent several hundred dollars to avoid.

Eh. I'm kinda stuck on that. What is [H]? A pre-built system community or a DIY system community? I would say the latter. I'm sure we can agree on that. But you can always share what you got. And a majority of people here have pre-built laptops and discuss Dell systems as well. So it's truly a mix of everything.

Read the thread....he only bought it because they financed it.

flaming because u were provoked and flaming for no reason are two different thngs... Also HardForums are not just for people who OC there video cards to the max or have some extreme mod done to there PC. Its a forum where people who show ENTHUSIAM towards computers, can talk and chat about them.

You need to read the whole thread. The guy did several things that you missed.
1) he says hes built systems in the past.
2) he researched the total cost of parts from another source: newegg
3) he was satisfied with this system because he got stuff in the price he couldnt from a build.... monitor, OS, HL2
in my opinion, this guy did several things. he compared a quality prebuilt system to the price and time of a DIY, he brought people in to the discussion who didnt know alienware, AND he said that one of his primary decision making factors was free financing. This is by FAR a legit post for this forum, albeit not one you see much.
AND he never once called anybody a moron or other such thing.

Just to clear a few things up:

I have been a member at these forums for a little while. I may not post much but I do read the forums every day. HardOCP is the only place I go for tech news and such, so I felt that I had the right to post my new purchase in these forums. I apologize if anyone is offended because I made a post about my purchase on what I think is the best tech forum on the web.

dont worry about it..this site has something for everybody your were right to post here :D

First of all Nice Rig, I WANTED A ALIENWARE :D but i prefer building my own rig. Anyway enjoy ur new rig and tell us some of ur benchmark results aye.

Hey aironite congrats on your recent purchase! It's a fine system no matter what anyone says, and you can porudly say that your computer is free of a garish case window, unlike so many "DIY computers" on here.

I'd get Voodoo or ABS. AFTER building it, because I love to build computers...and that's the reason I am in these forums.

These new computer threads always seem to be floaters in the crapper. They never go away and there sh**. There should be a new section called "YAY, New Rig!", so I can easily find what I really need and avoid the constant flaming, when someone gives someone there wallet.

What a thread crap! Why?..why? because its a big world with all kinds of people in it, thats why. I built my own but have no problem with others who bought pre-builds. You should go post in a thread where your input helps somebody.

CONGRATS! enjoy the system, regardless of the other comments. Alienwares are very nice systems, be sure to post pics.

Being flamed is a good thing. Being flamed means that you are actively contributing to the forum. You gave the stats on the new system you got; which means that you basically gave an opinion stating you like Alienware. People who don't like prebuilt systems are going to reply stating just that. I don't have a problem with it unless people dive into name calling or get off topic.

If you are proud of your system than you should post. When you get it(if you haven't already) post some benchmarks. But just be warned if you do that then people will be flaming you both for having Alienware and about how synthetic posts aren't relevent. Flaming is the nature of the forum beast, plus you have to admit it makes things more interesting.

Just promise me one thing; that you will overclock the crap out out of it and show just how fast $3,176.00 worth of Alienware can go.

Come on you guys....debate the issues and let the flaming / personal insults go or the thread gets locked. Pretty simple.....

Thanks - B.B.S.

See Id disagree, these forums are really about anyone being able to ask the most obvious and stupid question, foist strange, weird even unpopular opinions, yet expect not to be flamed. Of course that doesnt preclude a little humourous slow roasting :p

You will note that General Hardware's new mod Papa-Ming has cleaned up this thread
and likely done a little slow roasting of the perpetrators as well :p

Slow even heat, tastes better than flash frying with a flame thrower anyway
Its still entirely possible to cook someone down to thier socks politely.
In fact it how I got this job :p

Cheers to Papa-Ming! ;)

Now here's what we expect to see: pictures of your new system, your overclockability with your entire system-- including the processor, video card ("Alien Adrenaline" ;)), etc. and finally some before/after benchmarks or something. :D

Congratulations on your Alienware purchase and enjoy its awesome performance. It's a good decision, regardless of what others think. :) Personally, I'm going to get an Alienware too next year (probably). It's going to be a dual CPU dual core Opteron for some serious crunching power. Why don't I build it myself? Well, a lack of time, knowledge and generally, I want something that "just works" right out of the box. I don't want to spend days fiddling and messing around with my PC. Some people like that, I don't. For people like me, pre-builts like Alienware are the only way to go.
