I could have built the same system for around $2300.00 and gave you a 3 year warranty on all parts.... But of course you wouldnt have received your free alienware t-shirt and mouse....

Good choice. I'm assuming you got the Alienware because you either didn't know how to build, or was too lazy to build. I swear by Alienware as the #1 choice of computers if you can't/don't want to build it yourself.

EDIT - And to all the people bashing his decision: use some logic. Assuming he didn't know how to build a computer himself, he could have read how to do it and then done it, right? OK then, what is he going to do if it has a problem? He doesn't have the knowlege necessary to troubleshoot his problem, so now he's up the creek without a paddle. No, Alienware is the way to go if you insist on a prebuilt.

EDIT 2 - You guys also forget that the total cost includes the $735 LCD display.

By the way, I've built every system i have had up to date, but I chose this route because I got financing with them. I've always wanted an alienware for their top-quality products and the time seemed right that they were discounted $700.

As for people that think I'm lying, I should have it on friday the 20th. I'll take pictures. Thanks and I apologize if I start any kind of "flame war".

LOL, which would be more unwise? Spending X amount of dollars on a worldwide brand that is backed by an onsite warranty and has customer reviews available all over the internet...or giving X minus 20% to some kid on the internweb just because he says he can do it faster/better/cheaper?

At least you got the rebates on it...and for $3000 that better make you hella satisfied. Lotsa crap to wade through in that spec sheet but it doesn't look like it boils down to a $3000 system...wish I could get away with selling crap at that much of a markup. Damn conscience getting in the way all the time. Even assuming a chunk of that goes to the LCD...a 2005FPW is only like $450-550 if you nab it when they have a good discount code out, which is like nearly always.

newegg.com + (some knowledge + hardforum) = very cheap and very fast computer.
Why would you give your money to someone else to build it? If your that lazy you mine as well buy from people that have a brand name to sell. Like Alienware.

Should you buy a stock car with all the crap for alot of money? or fixup one with less money and get more out of it? Yes you do have to get off your ass..but at least you have more money in your wallet and something better.

I just configured a Dell XPS with a 660J, X850XTPE, all of the other specs as good or better, and a 4 year warranty + accident protection for $2806. You got ripped.

Which part?

People don't just build systems themselves because it's fun you know. It's cheaper and you get a better system out of it. Dell & Alienware & such do it for those that don't know how and they do it at a very high price in many cases. Sometimes they have good deals, but rarely on the "high end" systems as people tend to think more expensive = better. They do it because people will buy it, not because it's really worth that much. You want help putting together a good system without paying a premium for it, look around Hardforum or something. Businesses are there to sell things to you, not help you out.

For Alienware, you seemed to get a pretty good deal. Congrats on the new rig. I don't think there needs to be any bashing going on at all. You got a brand new, top of the line system and you should be congratulated for it no matter where you get it from.
 
With the mail in rebates, that's actually not bad. Keep in mind guys, he's paying ~$160 for Win XP Pro, he's paying ~$500 for the 20.1" LCD, $50 for HL2..... that's $710 right there. That's approximately $2065 he paid for the box. I paid $1820 for my parts, and that wasn't including a second optical drive, sound card, or floppy drive. Assume those are about $170 total... and you get down to about $1900. I paid $1820.... and I shopped at 4 different stores to optimize the prices, too.

Granted, some of my pieces are a little higher quality... but over all, our two PCs would perform very similarly. For not having to screw with it yourself, that's pretty sweet.

For those that say you could build the same machine for far far less, please post some proof to back up your claim. I thought so too, at first, but when I counted it up, it's actually not bad.

Of course, that assumes you count the mail in rebates, which are a major PITA.. but money is money.

Good job.. not only did you get a great computer for little to no work, you didn't get screwed on the price, and you made this skeptic into a believer. I still wouldn't do it myself, because I actually really like building my own computer... but for a gamer friend who didn't want to screw around, I might even recommend Alienware now.

I look at it this way. He could have either done his research, setup all the parts for his computer, and before buying have started one of those "I'm building my first computer how do these parts look" thread. This way he would have learned how to build a computer while basically having his parts, and prices if he posted them, looked over by a bunch of people who have no monetary interests in what he is buying. That and he would have a lot more respect in forums such as this. Or the choice he made of buying an expensive pre-built system and be made fun of and losing the respect of people here.

I mean come on, this is a place where people take pride in their home built systems. Many people such as myself don't like prebuilt desktop systems from any company, with many having a particular hatred for Alienware.

Its a well established equation: Alienware + [H]ard|Forum = Get Flamed

It's about like bringing up Thermaltake cases. Pretty much everyone knows it's an overpriced rip-off. In Tt's case not just financially either.

I think most of the bashers here are just angry they're only 15 years old or so and can't afford a system like that. Maybe not all, but most.

Sure Alienware may be terribly over priced, but one thing you cannot argue is how the system runs. It's definately beefy and I'd like to see how it fares against all your 3dMark scores...

Congrats man, you got a nice system. Take a look inside when you get it, maybe put together your next one once you know more about PCs, you'll definately be much more happy with your next system.

Apparently you can't, so I can see why you might think that (although your graphics card is a total non-sequiter with the rest of your specs...?). But from the perspective of someone that could afford it, it'd be a total waste of money.

Then again I've been building systems for years, people that haven't don't have the capability to research design and construct it themselves, so they have little choice but to turn to Alienware or some other corporate builder. Then again if they're on this forum in the first place they don't have much excuse not to just learn.

Alienware=expensive. Yes, but I paid too much for my computer too--and I built it myself. Probably even a little more expensive than the OP's. To each his own. As long as you enjoy it that's what matters. Eff the haters. :p

Btw Finch, when did you build yours? Parts have gotten cheaper of course, so if you built a comparable system 6 months ago, then try searching for prices now and comparing.
