id Software's Official DOOM3 Benchmarks

lol...I'm not saying you have to buy one...I'm saying that "not enough performance increase" isn't a reason to pass over this generation.

Sure its a reason not to buy this generations cards. Games that will require me to upgrade won't be out for another year. HL2, Doom3 I'll still be able to play both of them with a mixture of high and medium settings. There is no justification as of now to spend another $500 on my system when I can still play all of my games at very high detail without any lag right now and into next year.

As for...
I maintain this is the biggest performance increase ever seen from one generation to the next
I think the Geforce3 TI-500 was a bigger gain than this generations cards.

I'm too lazy to check and see if anyone already posted a link to this lol.

SANTA CLARA, CA—JULY 26, 2004—NVIDIA Corporation (Nasdaq: NVDA), the worldwide leader in visual processing solutions, today announced that independent third-party testing confirms that the NVIDIA GeForce 6800 Ultra and the GeForce 6800 GT graphics processing units (GPUs) deliver faster performance than comparable competitive offerings in Doom 3, regarded as one of the most highly-anticipated PC games in history.

DOOM 3 is one of the most anticipated PC games in history and people are worried about Far Cry benches lol.

So your reason is money then...and I can certainly understand that...

The Geforce3-Ti500 was only a step up from the original Geforce 3...the drivers that were released along with it gave it about a 15% performance boost...so all in all it increased performance over the original Geforce 3 by something like 20-25%...

Current generation just doubled the performance of last generation...that's 100%...

Here is an interesting quote I found today regarding Doom3. Any idea/theories on what card it could be?

"Just for clarification, those benchmarks are id Software's not HardOCP's. The evaluation of the numbers is mine though.

I think your question/poll may be a bit premature though, as I would not suggest anyone make a purchasing decision based on those benchmark numbers. The DOOM 3 [H]ardware Guide that will be out this week will be another story though, and you MIGHT just find another card that is even more valuable than the GT."

LOL... I could imagine the wind that would be lost if it's not a NV40 based card.....

he's probably talking about the 6800NU...he posted the other day about how it out-performed the X800Pro in Doom3...

Yea, i'm sure it is.

Its not the X800XT PE because its not going to be able to outperform the 6800u in OpenGL and its also completely vaporware. 6800u's have started shipping pretty regularly now. X800XT PE's are non existant.

And we all know damn well that he's not talking about the X800Pro lol. The X800Pro can hardly keep up with the GT in D3D let alone OpenGL.

I saw a new dual DVI 6800nu announced today. The 6800nu's also overclock really well. I've seen people running 400/900.

Please ATI listen to the masses and revamp those cursed opengl drivers ASAP!
Then peace will once again reign in video card land!

Maybe in ATI fanboy land lol. Peace is just fine over here on the other side :p.

you will be eating your words if that doesnt happens :D

Top id tech drops Doom 3 details

Two weeks after Todd Hollenshead used his .plan to announce Doom 3 had gone gold, another id Software staffer has used his own .plan to reveal more details about the game. In a lengthy update, Robert Duffy, one of the primary programmers at id, addresses a variety of subjects, including: Quality settings, ATI vs. Nvidia cards, Tools used to build Doom 3 and Development woes.

Just to add alittle more fuel to the flame. :D

I wouldn't go that far. That being said, the current benchmarks show about the difference it will be on lower systems. Only real problem is CPU limiting.

nVIDIA is the real crown winning this time , since
nVIDIA 6800 support DX 9.0c which ATI dont
nVIDIA Drivers Excellent support OpenGL which ATI dont
nVIDIA FX or 6800 series run Doom3 better then ATI which ATI run at half speed APROX

I honestly think that HL2 is more anticipated than D3. All ATi has to do is fix up their OGL code and their DX9 will pull them thru HL2 just fine.

On a side note...Whatever happened with the x800 SE? I think it was supposed to be like 6 pipelines or something. But I also heard it would be soft moddable to XT PE speeds by just enabling the pipelines, since all ATi did was disable them. I am not at all sure about this I heard it way back in the beginning of June.

Any insight?

I'm looking forward to HL2 but show me how its been more anticipated than DOOM 3.

And if ATI releases an X800SE, its not going to be soft moddable to an XT PE. An X800 SE would have alot slower RAM modules on it. The 1.6ns RAM modules on the PE is very hard to come by.

DOOM 3 is a major graphics advancement. In-game its going to look like nothing any of us have ever seen before. It will bring new realism we've never felt.

It would take a hell of a machine to run DOOM 3 with everything max. I dont think its going to take very much to run max settings in HL2.

it seems doom 3 and half-life 2 are split evenly in anticipation factor.

though HL2 lost some shine, as the dates have been shuffled occasionally.

then again, Doom 3 just came out of no where, so id hasnt really got as much marketing out, as they probably should have.

i guess time will tell

--

since when do graphics suddenly make a game better than another ? :p

All I said was that I think. There really is not much of a way to proove what game is more anticipated. I probably feel this way because I have played CS for 3 years so I am always surrounded by people who are HL enthusiasts. I also think that D3 will pass by much faster since it does not have the type of multiplayer that has made HL so popular. I really think that D3 will be a single player game that passes by like Far Cry. However, games like BF: Vietnam and 1942 tend to stick around for a long time. How long they last also doesnt tell us which is more anticipated. I guess all I can show for proof is that Valve has sold over 10 million copies of Half-Life worldwide and all those people are waiting for part 2.

EDIT: Not only gameplay, but I also think that HL2 is a more spectacular game. When comparing the trailers and whatnot it seems like HL2 has much more real looking graphics and not to mention their A.I. and physics system will mangle D3.

he has a point, Doom's multiplayer seems sketchy, 4 people? 8 i think they said they had running at one point.

CS:Source probably didnt take them that long to whip out, and it improves on the major flaw CS has now, piss poor visuals. imagine what the possible CS2 will be like, or any other 'official' mod from Gearbox

let source loose on the mod community, and who knows what will come of it.

I really don't see WTF you guys are talking about. Haven't any of you played the MP for SC:pT?

Exactly. I dont think people that dont play CS understand how much of a following it has. Take a look at these numbers....
Average unique users per month: 1,334,809
Average player minutes per month: 2.814 billion
Today CS had 112,058 players playing at the same time at the peak and 50,583 servers.

These numbers completely blow away the competition.

I played single player and got sick of it. I will probably try SC 3 since its E3 2004 trailer looked pretty cool.

Edit: I could name about 10 full blown third party mods that are ready to begin development as soon as the HL2 SDK is released. All people hoping to hit it large just like Jesse Cliffe did when he was making the original CS while in high school.

Ya and I said I have played single, thats it. Sry that I didnt tell you that I didnt play MP.

Doom 3 has amazing graphics no denying that. But Half-lIfe 2 has a bunch of awesome in game features that beat any features that Doom 3 has. I'm talking about the physics and the engine itself which is very powerful. Anything i've seen about Doom 3's physics engine cant even touch what Half-Life 2 has got. To put it simply Half-Life 2 and the Source engine will be what people will be playing for another 5 years.

I like the fact that I have to actually AIM for something in D3, I don't know about HL2 but considering CS I'm not sure it's going to be like that too. ;)

Have you played Doom3?

Have you played Half-Life 2?

Draconis don't bother, looking at his sig will tell you all you need to know and explain his comments. ;)

Isn't the physics engine done by Havok? I thought they were just working with Valve using their engine in HL2. Isn't it also used in other games as well like Max Payne 2 etc.? I don't think you can really say that is Valve's engine, although it is a feature of the game(HL2 Physics are powered by Havok). However I could be wrong but that is how I understand it. Also I don't think you can quite compare the two games since, well as ^Empty^ said, you haven't played them yet (final versions). That and given id's track record for engine usage, I wouldn't doubt that the Doom3 engine will be around for quite awhile. Hell the Quake 3 engine is still used in a good number of games, I think Half-Life was even based off of the Quake 1 engine or something? I can't remember since I never was a really big follower of Half-Life.

I still agree that the Source engine will also be widely used though, I think we will see both engines a lot in the near future.

the fact of the matter is half life 2 doesn't have better physics. it just offers to show them off a lot more (physics/manipulator gun, bigger areas).

It would take a hell of a machine to run DOOM 3 with everything max. I dont think its going to take very much to run max settings in HL2.

Looks like burningrave101 is hedging his bets. That way if the NV40 doesn't run so well in HL2 he can say "HL2 is irrelevant, DOOM 3 is all that matters."

Its not the X800XT PE because its not going to be able to outperform the 6800u in OpenGL and its also completely vaporware. 6800u's have started shipping pretty regularly now. X800XT PE's are non existant.

Tell that to two of my buddies that are trying to find 6800U's.
Besides, shouldn't the 6800U be a little more plentiful? It launched a month earlier. Listening to you rant about the greatness of NV40 cards makes me want to buy a r420 just for spite. Are you capable of saying a single positive thing about an X800?

Yes they used the Havok system and then they completely modified it to make it perfect. Its like if you wanted to have a fast car, no reason to invent your own car, you use what is tried and true and then go from there. There is no reason to reinvent the wheel.

Throw a mattress in the water and watch it bend and float half-way to the top. Throw a heavy barrel in the water and watch it sink to the bottom, while a lighter one bounces up and down halfway through the surface of the water as it's thrown in, eventually settling at the top. Amazing AI comrades who have top-notch AI (Doom 3 has no AI comrades). Drivable vehicles, such as a buggy-type car. Fully-featured facial expressions, from mouths, to cheeks, to lips, to eyelids and eyebrows, to eyes themselves, to the forehead to the chin, to the tongue, to the teeth, to the jaw, the nose, and every single viewable part of the face... simple amazing; has to be seen to be believed. There's just so much to Half-Life 2 that it will have to be played to be believed.

So overall, Half-Life 2 is, in my opinion, the better game on so many levels.

It does, it's been stated before that you need to cooperate with others that you find in the game.

Thats just ignorant. We are talking about HL2 not the fact that Half Life is a modified Quake 2 engine.

It does, it's been stated before that you need to cooperate with others that you find in the game.

Didnt know thank you. However this is a thread about D3 Benchmarks so I am goin to leave it at this. I am sure most of you D3 diehards havent seen the HL2 demos put out at E3 2003 and 2004. Watch those then you can make a real decision.
