id Software's Official DOOM3 Benchmarks

Well, 3Dc is actually a real noticable difference.

Can't really make fun that only 6 games were supporting it a couple of months ago, the only game we know that supports PS3.0 is Far Cry.

I would never pay over 200 dollars for a video card, its just stupid.
They release new ones all the time so its pointless to go spend huge amounts of money when you can wait half a year and save 300 dollars. But thats just me.

After looking at the pictures in that link it looks like their is a noticable difference...

Yes, in the worst case scenario, there is an IQ difference if you blow up the picture and stick your face to the screen lol.

3Dc is just an extension onto DXT5. It makes the image look a little more blurry while the DXT5 makes it look a little sharper. Your not going to notice it when your playing the game.

3Dc also has lower precision then using no texture compression. I also think it will bring very little performance advantage. Especially on these 256MB cards.

Interesting thought what will happen to this compression format when games start to go towards parrallex and displacment mapping?

The bottom line man...there's no excuse for ATi to have shitty OpenGL performance. I know that most games are D3D these days..but there are still some very important games in OpenGL and ATi, who loves to preach about pure gaming performance, simply doesn't seem to care that some of the most important games out there are written in an API that they don't pay much attention to.

There's no excuse, ATi should have decent OpenGL drivers...I'm not going to make any excuses for them

Yes, ATi should defenitely have better Open GL performance but i still think that spending multiple hundred dollars already after you've bought an X800 is stupid

oh btw

ANYWAY

Noone would be spending multiple hundred dollars if they sold their X800 and THEN bought a 6800 though. If they had a PE they would likely make a good profit.

One of the few OpenGL games? lol

Did you go to sleep and miss 2003? Remember the two games both nominated for GOTY last year? Call of Duty and KOTOR? Both OpenGL.

I'm replaying KotOR on my 6800. Fully playable at max setting 6xS/16xAF Ops on...if I turn the opps off I need to downgrade to 4xAA.

And there are dozens of other very popular OpenGL games like City of Heroes, Neverwinter Nights, and the Hitman series.

NWN is next on my GT hit list.

I want the card with superior perfomance in Half life 2 - that's why I'm still considering an x800xt, although obviously I don't know it the 6800u will perform better - I'm just so confused...

woah first thread of mine to get stickied :p

I figure I'll have my game the 4rth if ebgames actually ships the 3rd, which is great since I have an itchy trigger finger. I'm sure my rig will be more than enjoyable considering I only play 1024x768, and I will most likely be cpu limited anyways. I don't remember ever waiting for a game like I have for doom 3/hl2

Just wait man...by the time HL2 rolls around you'll have infinitely more information to work with...but if you can't wait...I'm sure any of the new cards will do a great job...all indications point to them being extremely competitive in HL2...

The real reason why ATI is not doing anything with their Catalyst drivers for OGL cards is because they know they cant optimize things under OGL. ATI always had fear for OGL since the beggining of RXXX core... Doom 3 clearly indicates which video card is more powerfull without any optimizing. Only a dumb person would get X800 over nvidia's new 6800 lineup with today's new video cards...

So from making that statement I would be under the impression that you work at ATI or have some speacial information about ATIs openGL drivers. And then your calling everybody an idiot that bought a X800 because of what? The Doom 3 Benchmarks?
Calling everybody an idiot that bought a x800 series card is like saying somebodies opinion is wrong, your an idiot or you dont understand what you type.

You think if ATI realized it would've brought very little performancwe increase they would of included it?

I think it's pretty obvious that was just his opinion...and it's not a horrible idea...maybe there is something about OpenGL that prevents ATi from getting the performance they can get in D3D...that would make more sense than just "we didn't feel like it" or..."who cares about Doom3 and OpenGL based games"...

I agree with you. I think you cannot go wrong with either card this round. nvidia has a wonderful product and so does ati. I am a little dissapointed with ati for not fixing their opengl driver, but that is their choice. Neither product owns the other in any D3D game i have seen and ati's opengl performance is more than playable on the x800.

The performance boost form using 3dc over dxt5 is 2% at most when concidering normal maps are 1/3 or 1/4 of the textures (which all other textuers will use dxt compression) used in games that support them.

normal map rendering in highests setting you need a

Diffuse texture (color texture)
Height map (used for attenuation)
Light map (used for specular highlights)
Normal map (lighting calculations)

ATi says its 5% but thats only when you don't have a height map and light map.

I'm sure it's nice and all...that's why they put it in...but that doesn't mean it makes a big enough difference to code especially for it...new features in graphics cards get passed over by developers some times...that's life...I'm not saying that that's what will happen here...I can't predict the future...but for sure, merely the appearance of a feature in a card doesn't make that feature worth while...

But how would you feel if someone said you were an idiot for your ideals or opinions?

Then I guess ATI overhyped a feature that wasnt really that good?

I wouldn't say that...just that it remains to be seen...I don't think they really hyped it all that much...

But how would you feel if someone said you were an idiot for your ideals or opinions?

I wouldn't feel anything...

Anyone know how to Force Shader Version3.0?
In Riva Tuner there is only Force Shader Version up to 2.0

Should I use Override or no Override?

Ok thanks for the reply empty; I might even be satisfied with my 9800xt :p But I'm addicted to 1600x1200, full detail and full quality...

Hopefully, their rewritten OGL code will make the gap much smaller because I still like their DX9 performance best. I'll probably try Doom 3 but HL2 is gonna be the game of the future with all the mods that come with it. Look at Counter Strike, still the most popular game with millions of players, yet its many years old.

cs: source is pretty bad ass already :p

eliminates the big complaint of the old saggy graphics from the HL engine.

still, can't wait to see what the mod community comes up with

I'm sticking with my 9800 Pro until the next, next-gen cards come around. I haven't seen enough performance gain out of either of these cards to warrant an upgrade. You guys can go ahead are argue, "Nividia is the 1337 ultra sux0rs" or "ATI da uber card" and whatever else you can think of, but I'll be perfectly happy running my $200 card on "High settings" instead of "Ultra uber very high settings". Besides are you really going to notice the difference between the two?

If I had a 9800 or a 9700 for that matter I would probably stay with it but when you have a gf 3 ti200 like me then you start looking around for a new card.

This is the biggest jump between generations ever seen in video cards...so if you aren't seeing enough performance gain...you're probably visually impaired...

Synthetically it is, real-world is a different matter.

Riiighhttt
Thats why in every game you see something on the order of a doubling in performance. ;)
I guess it's just some "rightwing conspiracy".... ;) :D

i'm still happy with my 9800 pro to some extent but a lil disappointed with some of some of the features in the drivers...its weird text doesnt seem as good compared to my gf3 ti500? its a lil blurry around teh edges its annoying. i cant seem to fix it not matter how much i try to change the settings on my monitor. even this card cant hold up everything high over 1028x no aa/af for me in UT2K4 was was expecting at least 1280x.

anyway, when the time comes, i'm definately thinking about picking a 6800 up whether its a U or GT. having the possibilities of going SLI is really hard to resist. we'll see how it goes later down the line. upgrading procc/ram/mobo probably will be a result but hopefully if it all falls in to place it'll be worth it, braggin rights!

fact of the matter is, the verdict isnt really out yet i'm still waiting for the real reviews on D3 in regards to the videocards and overall fun factor on the title itself.

im just happy a company had the ball to start SM3.0 a year early so to speak. because nvidia made the jump both next-generation cards are going to be working with more matured software and techniques for the shaders

True, also going to .11 microns next pretty sure .11 doesn't have low k, unless they have made the fab type in the last 3 months  . ATi will have to drop low k if they go down to .11

LOL

The news hit anand with a link to ati's response and a whole new round of "it's not true!!!" has hit the internet.

Did you know:
1. You can't trust hardocp benchmarks (apparently timedemo demo1 can't be trusted when it's printed on hardocp, even though it was run at id with ATI and NVIDIA present)

2. NVIDIA optimized the Doom3 engine. Hmmm, I thought John Carmack wrote it.

3. Both ATI and NVIDIA cheated in the benchmarks. A funny comment since only ATI texture cheating (colored mipmaps change the results) is mentioned in the [H] article.

4. The benchmarks were *mine* since I pointed how it was run. LOL Texas was pretty hot and I only got 1/2 my normal frequent flyer miles. Sorry Kyle and Carmack, you're exposed.

5. 4GB of memory with a PCI-E and P4 3.6GHz invalidates the benchmarks. That dull blade didn't even bother to get past page 2.

I learned a lot, did anyone else? ;)

Fortunately there is some common sense in the thread, but it's still funny to read anyways. A couple of those guys obviously haven't even read the article, or just didn't understand it. You're looking at skull bone 5-6" thick in that thread.
