HTC Touch Pro

Sigh, define crippled. Because it basically has a little less RAM, that's hardly crippled. Would it be better if it didn't? Sure. But everyone running around the Internets screaming "its crippled" really doesn't give anyone any accurate information. I can't stand lack of perspective, sorry it's a personal failing. :p

Don't forget the keyboard.

And the locked GPS, no accelerometer, little less ram? try half of sprints touch pro.

Thanks for demonstrating my point. The GPS is easily unlockable for free, nevermind the fact that Verizon has already said they are unlocking it themselves any day now. And it does have an accelerometer that works just fine. Anyone can find this information out but it's easier to yell crippled, I know. :p

i did search, and found that it didnt have an accelerometer, forgive me for not searching hard enough.

I'll take the extra keys.

That's a personal preference, many would not take the extra keys since they are smaller and superfluous.

You can't deny that Verizon cripples every phone that they release...it's just what they do.
I can deny that they cripple every phone because it's obvious most of those that are using the word cripple don't really understand it. :p "It's just what they do" doesn't sound like any real reason to me. Sounds more like regular carrier bashing from people that consider their phone a status symbol rather then something that gets a job done or performs a certain function.

Btw, the reviews I've seen actually regard the AT&T layout as the best.
So those specific reviewers liked the layout better. How does that translate to "OMG it's crippled?" I'd take Verizon or Sprint's layout anyday since I tend to use the number row up top a lot. I guarantee you thousands of people would agree. That's called anecdotal evidence and you can't really "benchmark" that.

try half of sprints touch pro.

Forgot this point. Verizon installs less programs by default, think of it in relation to buying a new computer from Dell and Dell has already filled up your drive with a ton of crap you aren't going to use. Yes Verizon's has less RAM and yes it sucks. But it's not castrated, has plenty to function just fine, and it also has less of an installed footprint from the get go anyway. So it's nowhere near as bad as it's being made out to be. "Half" is just not true.

Note, I'm in no way saying Verizon's is the best of all three. But it's the lesser of all three by a tiny margin if anything. Easily not worth switching carriers for or going through the hassle of getting a different model to try to get working with Verizon.

I dont know what you're talking about the phone infront of me(verizon pro) has an accelerometer and GPS... although the ram is definitely true. This phone has 128+OnChip to compared to the 256+OnChip ram which puts the Sprint way ahead in that aspect. Also, the verizon version does have the stranded m which is definitely annoying at first considering my last verizon XV6800 did not have that issue. Please dont start spitting out facts about a phone you dont know anything about. I have it infront of me, if you have any questions i can answer them. This phone looks better than the sprint version but it has less ram. The ATT version looks similar to the verizon version but is GSM and has the same amount of ram as the Sprint but has slightly smoother corners.

What really annoys me about my 6800 is that when you number lock it, you have to unlock it to get to the decimal point since it is shared with the zero. It makes plugging away in Excel a real bummer. Having the row for numbers will be nice.

I hope I can still get the Alltel version when I am up for a renewal. I lucked out when Verizon bought Alltel that we have to be sold off so we got to stay Alltel... costs less and better phones.

The memory is the only thing that is of major difference at this point, and really it's not that necessary. This phone runs just as fast as
any of the other ones.

The memory isn't a major difference? Puh-leeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeze.

Verizon also locks the GPS driver so you have to use their $9.99 a month map application.

Hmm that's an intriguing angle, you can pickup an Alltel version and it should just about be guaranteed to work on Verizon's network easy you'd think.

It's relative, not everyone maxes everything out. As long as you have enough buffer to run what you want to run, then it's fine. And for the earlier poster it has more then 128MB it actually has 192MB whereas the others have 288MB. That's before the carriers pre-load software, I don't know how much is left on either of the models after that. It's not the full 288MB on the others either. Best way to get the full amount is to do a custom ROM and then you get to choose what takes up your space. Here's a thread that goes into it a tiny bit more, I too am curious why they took a little RAM out. Sorry I don't accept the default "Because Verizon are dickheads lol" excuse. They are a business, there had to be a reason to do it. Maybe being the largest network they wanted to pay less to build the phones or something because they'd be selling a lot of them, I don't know.

As I said above, it's easily unlocked by anyone via google searching, and Verizon has said they are unlocking it anyway:

So no you don't have to pay $9.99 unless you really want to. :)

Alltel is pretty much ceasing to exist. In 5 more months it will all be Verizon branded with the exception of the markets such as the one I live in where Verizon couldn't have Alltel due to the result of Verizon having the entire market. We are for sale though.. hopefully no one picks up up before I am up for renewal. Alltel only wants $199 for the Touch Pro, that's $100 less than Verizon and Verizon's plan that is similar but a bit minutes less is $10 more a month.

The RAM issue, it wasn't done to be dickheads, it's done purely as a profit motive. Who knows, maybe they save $20 a phone and since most people won't realize that a Sprint/AllTell/AT&T/Verizon Touch Pro are any different, instant win for Verizon. As a user of a 6800, I know all too well what lack of RAM is like.

It's good that Verizon is unlocking the GPS. I will beleive it when I see it though.

Ummmm yeah, got a letter here the day after it happened. They don't get to absorb the entire Alltel market area. In some places, Alltel and Verizon were the only two carriers. The FCC said that Verizon has to keep Alltel seperate and divest those markets. I live in one of those markets thankfully and won't have to become one of the collective.

On a side note, people do know that Verizon Wireless is a joint venture between Vodofone and Verizon. It's just another company (Alltel) being swallowed up by a foreign company. Not that it matters since the US hardly owns or makes anything anymore. My company included.. 100 yr old mom and pop company, now part of a huge German group, and our business is 90 percent based on money from federal and state tax revenues.

AT&T has been rumored at picking up the divested Alltel markets.
http://news.cnet.com/8301-1035_3-10156765-94.html

Anyways, so for the time being, I get to remain Alltel and enjoy un-bjorked phones and lower cost plans.

Back on topic though, does anyone have one of these Touch Pro's yet and do you use a screen protector on it?

What about the older 6800 and Moguls? I have always had one on mine, but question if it's necessary.

My Mogul did not need it since it was NOT a glossy screen. This Verizon Touch Pro definitely needs a screen protector because the screen is so glossy that it will scratch. Same with the near mirror finish backing of the phone. I suggest getting something that will cover the entire phone since otherwise you'll get scratches everywhere. I already ordered mine. :D

I use a screen film/protector on my Touch Pro that came in the box (AT&T).

I do not have a back cover/protector but I keep my phone in my pocket or on my desk 100% of the time.

Definitely think the screen protector is a must, I suppose if you're rough on handsets you would want to grab a full wrap. I'm careful so I don't need one.

I ordered an invisible shield off thier website which has a lifetime warranty and it cost me 17 bucks with 30% off today with the code PRESIDENT.

www.zagg.com check it out!

While I like the touch pro 2, and it is better than my fuze, I realize once again, for another year, cell phone tech. will be at a stand still. It has the SAME processor as the current fuze, my first gen iphone had a processor comparible to the fuze, so here we are now, gonna be approaching two full years after the first iphone when the new touch comes out, and still the processor is barely better.

You couldnt be more right. Its really not much of movement on the processor levels... yet. Once we see Intel and Nvidia entering more of the mobile market we'll probably start to see more competition again.

Yeah I like the dpad too but I could be persuaded away for higher resolution (800x480).

The Dpad on the touch pro isnt that fantastic compared to thersion.e titan. Not atleast on the verizon version

I find myself never using the d-pad which when I think about it, really surprises me. It would come in very handy in Excel if I would just use it.

I am just glad that finally HTC has come up with a keyboard where the darn decimal point/period do NOT share the same key as a number. Man I hate that, being locked in to num-lock and have to unlock to get a decimal point.

EDIT: I swear sometimes my posts are typed in excactly correct but after submitting there are weird spelling errors.

Ya, I HATE the dpad, such a waste of real estate. I never find myself saying, "man im glad I have a dpad." its mostly "man I wish this screen was a little bigger."

Well as the title states I would like anyone who has a Touch Pro to state their opinions and their overall experience with one. I would like to get opinions because I myself really want one because well I am tired of carrying around an MP3 player and Phone and want something integrated.

As a phone, it is great. High resolution screen makes web browsing very usable and HTC does a good job with TouchFLO 3D. It isn't a very good MP3 player however. The interface is pretty good for it, but you have to have an adapter with you at all times to use any headphones with it. The dpad also sucks on it unfortunately, so if you wish to flip through songs without using the screen, it isn't the best option. I'm still very happy with it however.

wait for the pro2 if possible. it looks so much better and is being demo'ed right now! release is suppose to be sometime in april or may

That's when it comes out in Europe. You will have to wait a few more months after that for a US launch.

lol well, I couldn't wait so I just shelled out $450 for the damn phone and it should be here on friday :D!

My Touch Pro finally arrived (xv6850), I had a hard time ordering it since my xv6700 had served me well for so many years. But when my friend (Verizon) and brother (Sprint) both got one, I was being double-teamed and had to give in. I messed around with it on the stock ROM for awhile to get a feel for it and then unlocked it and uploaded a new ROM (5 minutes tops). I now have unlocked GPS, more performance and some neat tweaks to keep me busy. I'll post back with more as I stumble across it.

Dude, i just do not understand how to get the GPS to work. Im using SSK's 1.5 Verizon ROM and i know GPS is unlocked but i dont get how to actually get it on.

You need to get a program like HTC GPS test or GPS Test / GPS Tool, there are several free ones.

These applications will use AGPS and sync with the satellites themselves, then you can go into your mapping program, (tom tom, google maps, whatever) and get the mapping information.

I can usually get a full 3D fix in 1 - 3 minutes or less.

My last HTC was the XV6700. Jeez, the Touch Pro looks nice, but I guess I should wait for the Pro 2...but the Touch 2 is even bigger and battery life isn't rated as good. Hmm...

You need to make sure the GPS is turned on.

Start\Settings\Personal Tab ---> Phone\Services Tab --> Select "Location Setting" and click "Get Settings" and make sure On is set.

Yeah it's a bit hard to get info sometimes because there are so many threads and many of them are sooooo long. :p But I got it working by just reading the rest of the thread and seeing what issues others had. One guy was in my exact same boat, new touch pro, new SSK rom, first time GPS enable. I also had to go by a window and it started working so I probably had it working earlier and just didn't know it because of my house.
