yeah look at how well the external hd-dvd drive worked out for the 360 :p

but it didn't stick MS with every console being stuck with the drive and it didn't add cost to the console as it was an accessory

the future of gaming shouldn't be limited to just dvd's, if we have the technology why not use it, whether it was a bad move when Sony released the ps3, its a good move now.

if bray was an addon, we probably would have been stuck with hddvd, not a bad thing, but bluray is still Superior in size capabilities.

in this case, the bigger the better.

sorry if that sounded fanny, but i really do think this step needed to be taken.

can the ps3 read standard dvd's? I wonder why manufacturers don't use it opposed to bluray. It's got to be a lot cheaper, or at least at the beginning. I can't imagine many games use anywhere close to all of that space.

when the ps2 was first released, a majority of the games were still being sold on CD.

as for being necessary, since Sony had a vested interest in winning the format, it was 100% necessary for them. For gaming, not so much... compression, online distribution and (now) hard drive installations have made optical media size almost a moot point these days. And when it's not enough, using 2+ dvd's isn't a big deal.

who cares? the PS has like no exclusives except for like what, 6 maybe?

Xbox on the other hand has a lot more and its easier to make games for it since most of them are ported from or to the PC, and for those who don't have $600,500, hell even $350 for a gaming rig can just buy the game on egay for $30.

pro tip: if a 360 game is also available on the pc, its not a 360 exclusive.

ps3 and 360 exclusives are comparable in quantity.

I do not see it changing. 360 generated huge hype at release and years after even. PS3 didn't get off to a good start, but it is slowly selling more units. Even if they substantially increase their sales, I do not see it surpassing 360 in its life time.

10/10 would read again A++++++ post

I think the slimmer, cheaper PS3 will boost sales significantly for the console. There are loads of fun, exclusive games (and non-exclusive games) for the PS3, whoever says there isn't hasn't looked far.

I have all three consoles and I paid over $500 for my PS3 after launch and I'm very satisfied with the purchase. It actually gets the most use of the three consoles. My XBOX 360 has some hardware issues so I don't play it much and, well, I never play with my Wii. I might install homebrew on it at some point but I sold my Zelda Twilight Princess disc (not sure if that's still the only exploit - it was back when I first looked into Wii homebrew).

Sad innit.

I really don't get the whole No PS2 BC, no deal...PS2 games look better on a PS2 quite frankly and they are cheap as fuck :D Don't even start with PS1 games they look horrendous thru the PS3, or maybe it's just todays screens they look bad on....one thing is for sure you can scrap the lot for me.

Dunno about anyone else but I bought a PS3 to play PS3 games.

If the ps2 games looked bad on the ps3 then it just means they slacked on the BC design. Bottom line is I have a lot of ps2 games and a lot of xbox games, whichever one has BC is the one I buy, selling a console without BC is a real slap in the face in my opinion so I give my money to the company that appreciates all the money I spent on their previous generation games.

Does the ps2 have upscaling and wireless controllers, among other things?
I remember having wireless 3rd party controllers by logitech on the ps2, they were shit hot.......god i feel old!

Yet as if by magic, on comparable life spans the PS3 has sold more.....imagine that!! Poor start indeed especially considering it had competition, unlike the 360, and cost more than that competition.....

Well if you have a PS2 and xbox games I'm sure as shit stinks you have a PS2 and an xbox. Would it really kill you to play the games on them? Bottom line is there is literally fuck all you, I or anyone else can say or do to bring it back and cutting off your nose to spite your face for a cpl of PS2 games is rather silly.

FWIW I think it'll come tho, there have been far too many persistent rumours regarding some kind of emulation coming in a future firmware along with a PS2 section of the store. However I think that is where you'll be disappointed, whereas only the games available on the store will be emulated and not a blanket roll out of every PS2 game so they get the select (most popular) perfectly running. Obviously I could be waaay off base here but time will tell I guess. I played one PS2 game on my old launch machine and never went back, I'd imagine I'm not alone in that stat and is most likely one of the reasons it was dropped in the first place.

Sometimes I wonder how these people even manage to get through the sites registration process.

I think the PS3 will sell better. The slim will be just the excuse people need to give in.

Who are you even talking about? You seem to be arguing against some nonexistent boogeymen and 1 or 2 blatant trollbaiters. This has been quite a good thread, pretty free of fanboyitis.

Just referring to TomGreen and a few others who can't see any good coming out of this price drop from Sony.

And there's no such thing as the boogeyman.

It will certainly sell better, but I think that the groups it's going to sell to are pretty limited. Basically, the people who are going to buy the PS3 at $300 consist of two groups: people who couldn't afford a console at $400 but are such die hard Sony fans they haven't purchased a Wii or 360 in the 3+ years they've had the opportunity to, and people who already own a Wii or 360 (or both) and want a PS3 as a second or 3rd console but weren't willing to spend $400. I think that both groups are rather limited in size compared to the numbers Sony is really hoping to capture here.

I think the real sales bumps come when the PS3 and 360 (not counting the core here, it's even less relevant since NXE launched and MSFT started really pushing downloadables as a central part of the 360 experience) start hitting the $200 and below price point. After all, the current consoles are still priced at the same price or higher (in the case of the Wii) than their predecessors launched at. There's somewhere around a hundred million people that purchased a console last gen that still haven't purchased a console this gen, and I think that the bulk of that is due to the continued high prices of the machines.

Both a friend and myself (pretty big 360 fan boys) have picked up Slims. I finally can play god of war, MGS, uncharted while still keeping my 360 for Halo and Gears.

Now. . . what console to get MW:2 on. . .

^^Neither console. Get it and enjoy it on the best platform for an fps, the PC.

Wow, play ps2 games on a ps2 and ps3 games on a ps3? Maybe I'm crazy.

Well you are right I will play ps2 games on the ps2 since I won't be buying a ps3. My guess is that Sony will make a bunch of ps2 games available to buy (again) on whatever Sony calls their ripoff of Virtual Console. Speaking of Nintendo hell even the Wii plays Gamecube games. The console market is highly competitive and if Sony can't be bothered to compete then enjoy 3rd place.

They can't sell PS2 games on PSN because current PS3 models can't emulate them. PS3's can play PS1 games just fine, thus is why you can find some for sell on PSN. Wii's can't play N64 games from their cartridges, you going to bash Nintendo for not letting you BC that?

X360 has shotty ass BC, people buy X360 mostly to play X360 games. It shouldn't be any different for the PS3. Get a PS3 to play PS3 games. BC is overrated and the up scaling really isn't as great as you might think. It smoothes them out a bit, but they still play as PS2 games. Up scaling isn't going to all of a sudden make your PS2 game look like a brand new game or look like a next gen game. If you aren't someone who lives off your parents or the government and works or goes to school full time, between all the games released in the last year and what is soon coming out, there isn't enough time in a day to play tons of PS3 games and PS2 games. People bitching about BC really gets old, and honestly come off as huge trolls. If you claim you are someone that’s interested in getting a PS3, but won't due to lack of PS2 BC, then a PS3 isn't what your interested in, but a PS2.

agreed, if you want to play old games you're better off with an emulator on your PC. It will make it look much better than playing it on a PS3 or 360... not to mention that you'll have MUCH better control for backing up memory cards and such

I currently do not own a "next gen" console. Never really cared for XboX or its exclusives...and its failure rate just outright sucks.

I wanted a PS3 but it was too damn expensive, so I've held off and concentrated on pc gaming. But I tell you this: when Sony comes out with its Special Edition God of War 3 PS3 Slim bundle at its new lower price point in March '10..I will be the FUCK all over it.

I think this isnt going to do crap. I'd say they beat 360 in monthly sales once or twice from the initial hype and then go back to their usual 3rd place. Also MS wont stand by and let them outsell them, they can drop their own prices.
And the possibility of them catching the 360 in total sales is ridiculous.

PS3 outsold the X360 for much of the first half of 2008.
Worldwide they ended 2008 in a virtual tie, despite a massive boost in sales to the X360 in the last quarter after the price drop.

It's a foregone conclusion Sony will sell more consoles worldwide in 2010 than MS. NPD will be closer. I'll predict PS3 wins 7 out of 12 months in 2010.

BS. BC was one of the big issues that the PS3 fanboys used to try to show that it was superior to the Xbox. But now that the PS3 can't do BC at all it's a worthless feature. The 360 doesn't support a huge amount of BC games but at least it supports many of the big ones. I have a PS3 and would be much happier to have the ability to play some of the PS2 games I missed since I gave up on the PS2 after my 4th one died in 2 years.

Freaking SDF.

You have a PS3 yet still think there is zero BC? Just because there is no PS2 BC doesn't mean there is no PS1. As worthless as I personally think that is (PS1 games and giant HDTV's just don't mix IMO) it is there.

well it looks like MS has dropped the price of the elite and removed the hdmi and component cable (wonder what the 360 fans that flamed sony for not supplying a hd cable will now say!!) and no optical port out of the box also, they have also increased the price of the arcade by £30, i think the ps3 is gonna do pretty well now!!

I expect to see a spike in sales and will last through the holidays but, expect to see sales drop off after the new year. Let us not forget that Microsoft lowered the price of Elites to $299 as well. I think both companies are going to see a spike leading into the holidays. I personally have no need for another HD console this generation, I have enough games as it is without the time to play them all. Congrats to Sony for getting the PS3 price down, but its not swaying me any.

I would consider myself quite the heavy gamer but in the recent economic climate, I've certainly re-tuned my spending habits. I'm sure I can't be the only one.

Dude, you a re-re?

Uncharted 1 and 2
Disgaea 3
Resistance1 and 2
Ratchet and Clank
MLB The Show series
inFAMOUS
Killzone 2
Motor Storm + Motor Storm Pacific Rift
Metal Gear Solid 4
Little Big Planet
SOCOM
Wip3out
Pixeljunk Monsters, Eden, etc.
echochrome
Warhawk
Valkyria Chronicles

And that's not nearly everything. I probably missed a couple, and I could easily toss in nonsense like PAIN and Buzz! and Singstar and make the list longer. You're quite obviously looking for a fight; instead I give you proof you're wrong. You may freely edit your post to say something like "PS only has like what 20 good exclusives?".
