Help in not wasting $60?

Well, not my problem or business anyway.

Even at $60 it's a pretty fucking cheap form of entertainment, I don't see how you could fault someone for paying that much money for that much entertainment, and at the end of the day I struggle to recommend games to replace COD.

Once people get sick of COD I'm sure they'll stop playing it. Not everyone gets sick of things at the same rate, enthusiasts will get sick of certain games faster, but COD doesn't have am infinite life span.

Some people label themselves hardcore gamers because they install Call of Duty, meanwhile, I've grown a beard just playing Demon's Souls and reaching a Soul Level of 45.

Some people label themselves hardcore gamers because they install Call of Duty, meanwhile, I've grown a beard just playing Demon's Souls and reaching a Soul Level of 45.

And now we're discussing the definition and merit of being called "hardcore"... wow... this thread went from having good points but communicated poorly to being completely worthless :p

4 hours later and I'm Soul level 53 with The Penetrator dead at my feet, I've gone from growing a beard to a double beard, and Biorr of the Twin Fangs is a bad ass. Put some of the Turpentine on my Halberd +5 and went to town on him, but sickeningly, The Penetrator stabbed at me with his huge sword, picked me up, impaled on his sword and tossed me across the room like a ragdoll, surprisingly, I didn't die, and I immediately clicked my New Moon Grass button like crazy, then he did the same thing to Biorr and I went over and killed The Penetrator as he had low life left. Definitely one of the best boss battles besides Flamelurker.

This is definitely one of the most rewarding games I've played in a while, it even surpasses the experience I've had with Deus Ex: Human Revolution. Every fucking inch of Demon's Souls is contested, and the game gives up ground to you only grudingly, making the feeling of accomplishment and achievement all the better. Now I need to actually complete a world to feel like a champion. I wonder if I'll max out my Soul Level by the time I reach the end of the game. Regardless, I think that once I beat it, I will definitely try NewGame+ which is supposedly 40 percent harder than a regular game.

Now only if having games like this released became the norm instead of a once in a generation occurence. It's unfortunate that we get dumbed down experiences instead of real challenges.

It's about how poor games are that have come out in the last 2-3 years on PC because everybody's too busy buying the latest rehashed shit with stripped out features that's a dumbed down consolized port when along comes a game like Demon's Souls and Dark Souls that turns out to be a grim reminder of what PC games used to be like.

Neither game has DLC. When you buy the game, you get the complete game.

Both games present stiff challenges.

Neither game is dumbed down.

Both games are loaded with features, offline and online, and they also present a new kind of online play that hasn't been seen before. In other words, it's innovative.

Remember when PC gaming used to check those off the list regularly because they were in the game, and PC games were innovative? Well, I hope you remember, cause all we're gonna be left with are memories of how PC gaming was king if this trend of consolization on PC continues.

Shortly, I'm going back to sleep, immensely satisfied. I must have died a death or 2 under or over 10 on 1-3, but I beat it and killed The Penetrator after 4 tries. The feeling of beating that fucker was gratifying.

That's another thing, we live in an instant gratification society, everybody wants easy gratification, this shit right here is a flashback to the old days where you actually had to earn progress in a game instead of having it handed to you Hello Kitty Adventure Island style as is common in most games released lately. I had to spill blood and die a few times before I could figure out the level.

Gotta love this review diary

This instant gratification stuff is bullshit... well der... I want instant gratification from a game... who the fuck cares... ITS A GAME, its a form of entertainment, if that's what someone wants, so be it. Now of course some people dont want instant gratification from video games, but who the fuck are you to judge other people who might want that. That's all video games are anyway, whether you're playing Dark Souls, COD or My Little Pony, its all just instant gratification after instant gratification regardless of whether you play the toughest one or the easiest one.

I work thousands of hours doing research, reading, experimenting, writing it up for publications in the vain hope of some distance gratification.

I've spent thousands of hours working on a race car to enter into a competition and I'm not even the driver, but I still do it for FUN. I've done 110-140 working hours in a single week multiple times, stressed out of my mind trying to get it done, almost breaking into tears when the component I've spent so hundred hours working on fails and breaks and it needs to be on the car the next day. And I wouldn't trade those experiences for anything, the sheer satisfaction when the car pulls in after a race and is one of the fastest cars on the track, even though I was never driving it.

Who the fuck are you to talk about instant gratification when all you are doing is playing a slightly tough video game that gives you gratification every few minutes (compared to those damned console peasants who only have to wait a few seconds).

Stop with this holier-than-thou crap, its meaningless.

You have what you like, others have what they like, its all just opinion. Games are meant to be fun, if you find your games fun, fine, stop lashing out at people who find different games fun. When a game or a series ceases to be fun, people will stop buying it, if people still find it worth their money, they'll keep buying it, simple as that.

And yet there you are playing a console game and trying to convince yourself that it's the pinnacle of PC gaming. Well I've got news for you: the PS3 this game was developed for has a fraction of the computing power that your PC does. Imagine just how epic this game could have been if they'd poured all their resources into fully exploiting the PC as a platform, rather than catering to the lowest common denominator hardware that is a modern console. The memory limitations alone must have seriously impacted their design decisions.

And yet you eat up this game like it's the best thing since sliced bread. Your standards are ridiculously low. Even though this may be a decent game by console standards, it's still the bottom of the barrel when you throw true PC exclusives into the mix. But instead of holding out for the real thing, you plop down your cash like a junkie needing a fix. Now *nobody* will get to experience the real thing, because you're showing them that there's a market for castrated console games. Nice job breaking it, hero.

Even the so called "good" multiplatform games that people are looking forward to, like BF3? Ha! It's really just a graphical upgrade of BF2. This is more than half a decade since BF2 came out. We should have 1000 player servers with a game world the size of Fallout 3's world. Instead DICE falls back on the meager featureset BF2 provided and so-called PC gamers lap it up because it's better than all the other crappy console ports lately. Please. Have some standards. Anyone who buys that game is too stupid to realize that it's a shadow of what it could have been.

Funny, you talk about Dark Souls like a stripped down experience in spite of knowing nothing about it, let alone how open world it is, how hard and challenging it is.

It's better than Deus Ex: Human Revolution, period.

It's better than Battlefield 3 and MW3, for sure. It'll likely be better than Skyrim.

It's an experience that no real hardcore gamer should be without.

unless that "real hardcore gamer" doesn't like RPGs... let alone JRPGs... lol

whatever, it's a good game, quit making multiple threads about it

Well, I guess if Puzzle Quest 2 is your kind of RPG, so be it.

All four of the games you listed are emasculated console ports. I don't see how you're helping your case here.

It can never be better than what it would have been if it were a PC exclusive.

If any of those games were a PC exclusive, then threads like this wouldn't be necessary because I wouldn't be ranting about how consolized the supposed AAA "PC games" are.

You can put "PC games" in parentheses, because they are really nothing more than glorified console ports with a few bones tossed to PC gamers, if any.

If Dark Souls were a PC exclusive, I'd be reading a thread bitching about how fucking hard the game is and how people quit playing it because they couldn't stomach personal failure.

And yet you bought Dark Souls instead of holding out for a superior PC version. Just shows how easily pleased you are, no different from anyone who bought any of those four games you listed.

You may subjectively rate Dark Souls as better than BF3 or DX3, but you're contributing to the problem as much as anyone who supports one of those games. If only there was a way to prevent people from buying bad games. The industry would shape up really fast.

And yet you bought Dark Souls instead of holding out for a superior PC version. Just shows how easily pleased you are, no different from anyone who bought any of those four games you listed.

That would be incorrect, I've already said this over and over I'm starting to sound like a broken record.

There is no PC version of this game because Japanese developers who made this game do not make PC games, and the reason they don't make PC games is because Japanese gamers do not like to play games on the PC.

I'm very hard to please, whereas you're happy buying a rehashed Call of Duty 4 without all the features and you buy the map packs, I abhor them and condemn them on here. While you have no problem giving Kotick enough money for a gold plated fish tank, I'm busy supporting indie developers on PC who make better games and don't try to rape your wallet.

While you'll be playing Diablo 3 with all it's stripped out features and dumbed down gameplay to suit the lowest common denominator, I'll be busy bringing my computer over to a friends house for some good old fashioned LAN play on Torchlight 2.

While you may be willing to install the Origin malware, I'll be busy scouring the Steam sales for any titles I wanted but may have missed out on.

While you might be playing a dumbed down consolized Skyrim, I'll be busy exploring the vast world of Dark Souls and it's unforgiving environments. I bet Skyrim will be easily beaten in 10 hours just like Oblivion was. Paid reviewers for Dark Souls still haven't even made it halfway through Dark Souls after 80 hours. This is even with them sharing information in an email group called "The Chain of Pain."

And no, I'm actually part of the solution. I support games that offer the best possible gaming experience. Not only that, I'm part of the solution because by voting with my wallet, I'm saying that as a gamer, I want more challenging games that are hard and unforgiving, Contra-like in terms of difficulty. By pre-ordering it, I'm sending a message not just to FROM Software that made this game, but to the industry as a whole that this is the kind of game I want made. I don't want that Hello Kitty Adventure Island shit that everyone else seems to like, nor do I want a lowest common denominator experience that is so rampant today.

Dark Souls has ZERO DLC.

Dark Souls has a Collectors Edition you can buy for the same price as the base game, $59.99, meanwhile, Skyrim has a ridiculous "Sucker Ass Collector's Edition" for $150 where you get a statue and an art book. Big fuckin whoop.

Dark Souls is insanely hard, whereas most games can be easily beaten in 5 or 6 hours, and you get trophies/achievements for just viewing the first cutscene or reaching the first save point. Dark Souls has no mercy for the weak, it weeds out the weak.

If you want "insert mediocre easymode game here", there's plenty out there that fit that description that you would probably enjoy.

I'm voting with my wallet that I want challenging games instead of the easymode titles that are all too common these days. If everybody voted this way, gaming as a whole would benefit, and there would be a revival of games that actually punished you for poor play and rewarded you immensely by giving you a sense of satisfaction and accomplishment when you overcome a difficult challenge.

And who's fault is that? Yours, and all the shortsighted Japanese people who buy it when they could be playing something much better. They're not voting with their wallets to support superior games, just inferior ones.

Again, if there were a way I could stop all these people from buying these inferior games, I would. They're too stupid to have the right to choose the games they want to play. Things will only get better when people start making intelligent decisions with their money. It's not going to happen while people keep supporting the limited games that are currently available.

Did you miss the part where I called MW3 and BF3 both emasculated console ports?

While you have no problem giving Kotick enough money for a gold plated fish tank, I'm busy supporting indie developers on PC who make better games and don't try to rape your wallet.
It's good that you support them, but when a single dollar of your hard-earned cash goes to a console developer, you're supporting the death of PC gaming and crappy games.

While you'll be playing Diablo 3 with all it's stripped out features and dumbed down gameplay to suit the lowest common denominator, I'll be busy bringing my computer over to a friends house for some good old fashioned LAN play on Torchlight 2.
Another game I won't be buying. What's your point?

While you may be willing to install the Origin malware, I'll be busy scouring the Steam sales for any titles I wanted but may have missed out on.
Just don't buy any console ports! Steam is full of those.

And I won't be buying either game, because I only buy titles which push the boundaries of what the PC is capable of as a platform.

<blah blah blah reasons why Dark Souls is 1% better than all the other console trash games out there>
It's still not as good as it would be if it were released on the best possible platform, the PC. I'm starting to sound like a broken record here because you can't seem to grasp the concept that just because it's got one or two features that set it apart from all the other crap console games out there, it's still just a console game.

Until you stop supporting mediocre games, you'll never get that version of Dark Souls that works with Eyefinity that you were dreaming about.

Japanese people are on average smarter than the average American, I'm not sure why you're referring to them as stupid, they are anything but.

Did you miss the part where I called MW3 and BF3 both emasculated console ports?

You'll probably buy them, and that's ok.

It's good that you support them, but when a single dollar of your hard-earned cash goes to a console developer, you're supporting the death of PC gaming and crappy games.

I'm a gamer first, regardless of platform. The death of PC gaming will happen in the near future if people keep buying consolized "PC games" instead of trying for PC exclusives that actually push what the PC is capable of instead of these dumbed down ports.

I like games that actually offer a challenge, ship out to me completed, with no planned DLC to nickel and dime gamers into submission. This used to be the norm for PC games, but not anymore. Dark Souls is far from crappy, but of course, you're entitled to your opinion.

Another game I won't be buying. What's your point?

Why wouldn't you buy Torchlight 2.

Just don't buy any console ports! Steam is full of those.

Guess whose fault that is?

And I won't be buying either game, because I only buy titles which push the boundaries of what the PC is capable of as a platform.

Missing out on Dark Souls is entirely your loss, but again, it's not for everybody, and that's fine. If you don't like challenging games, then it's a good thing you'll pass on this.

t's still not as good as it would be if it were released on the best possible platform, the PC. I'm starting to sound like a broken record here because you can't seem to grasp the concept that just because it's got one or two features that set it apart from all the other crap console games out there, it's still just a console game.

Maybe if PC gamers voted with their wallets to support challenging games instead of consolized crappy ass ports, then maybe this would end up on the PC because an American company would be willing to publish a PC version.

But then again, a game like this wouldn't sell on PC, we're too used to easymode games.

Until you stop supporting mediocre games, you'll never get that version of Dark Souls that works with Eyefinity that you were dreaming about.

I never have supported mediocre games. I honestly don't care if Dark Souls is ported over to PC, because I know it wouldn't sell enough copies to make it worth it because PC gamers are not cut out for this kind of challenge.

Feel free to address the rest of my post, if you can :D

Since when were Americans the only people that play PC games? Invalid point. Just like the rest of your regurgitated short sighted and overly biased view on things. I already beat Demon Souls, whoop de doo, Ninja Gaiden on the NES was harder.

The Penetrator? Did he register in his neighborhood?

He's called that, kind of fittingly, becaues his sword is so big and long that when he thrusts it into your body, it goes through you and impales you on it, then he lifts his sword up and swings it, while you're still impaled on it, and you're thrown off his sword into the ground, and it usually is a one hit KO if he pulls off that move.

But yes, I get the porn star/sex jokes there.

If you rescue Biorr of the Twin Fangs from the dungeon near the 1-3 Archstone, he will assist you in the battle, check it out on Youtube if you get a chance.

I'm Soul Level 53, and my first mission when I get home is to take down the False King, I believe that's the 1-4 or 1-5 boss, whatever.

By the way, Amazon.com has sold out of preorders for the Dark Soul's Collector's Edition, I'm glad I bought my copy.

You could list 100 reasons why Dark Souls is better than all the other shit console games and console ports out there. Still doesn't mean it's not a shit console game.

It's better than any triple A PC title in recent memory, and that's a fact, son. As I've said many times before, I find it a sad commentary on the state of PC gaming when I'm able to say with a straight face that a console game is better than anything released on PC recently.

If I denounced all games with those shortcomings, I will be forced to play Dreamcast and Quake Live.
We agree but how would I enjoy my hobby?

I think that pretty much says it all. It's a hobby. I don't take it seriously enough to care to protest. I want to play some fun games (Deus Ex was a blast, so was Gears of War 3, and I'll be buying Battlefield 3 and Modern Warfare 3). If I think something's too expensive, I won't buy it or I'll wait for it to go down in price.

I'm all for protecting consumers rights, don't get me wrong. But, come on, games out these days are freaking amazing. Say what you will about consoles, but they are putting out A+ titles, and they are getting games that were otherwise in the realm of PC gamers only, into the hands of millions of people who would never play them otherwise.

Complaining about dedicated servers, "dumbing down" games, etc... it's a waste of my time. I've grown up, I have a job, a fiance, and I just want to spend a few hours enjoying games I couldn't even imagine when I was my brothers age.

Casual gamers like you shouldn't be allowed to buy games and ruin it for everyone else.

That's because all the AAA PC titles in recent memory have been console port crap too.

So what is PC gaming anymore? The last remaining bastion of PC gaming has to be Torchlight 2, it's a title coming from ex-Blizzard employees that is attempting to do everything right and is going to include all of the essential features that PC gamers have enjoyed for years.

Even though it will get some attention and exposure, I expect it to be drowned out in the sea of mediocrity that already exists that will add some more dreck to the pool.

PC gaming needs some chlorine in the pool, hopefully EA and Activision both fail in a titanic display of failure on par with what Acclaim Entertainment went through years ago.

It's the only way change would occur.

See when I think of casual games I think of Plants Vs Zombies and Bejeweled. Call me crazy.

I can agree with that definition to an extent.

I have no idea what the other guy is referring to, but I view most people who play games like Call of Derpy as casual gamers rather than "hardcore" gamers.

I tend to think of "hardcore" as challenging, instead of a dumbed down gaming experience that caters to the lowest common denominator, aka, that's the definition of casual. Casual gamers do not want a challenge, casual gamers do not want frustration, casual gamers want easy mode, they want victories just handed to them without earning it, they just want a simplified experience that they don't have to put much thought into.

The consolization of games being ported over to PC has made this more and more prevalent as of late.

Used to be that when people thought of PC gaming, they didn't just note that the gaming experience had superior visuals and whatnot because of the lack of hardware limitations compared to consoles, but they took note of how PC games could be more expansive and challenging, and often longer because of that.

That just isn't the case anymore, instead, we get "cater to the casuals" 5-6 hour PC games loaded with DLC and map packs for what passes as a "triple A" PC title these days.

I despise the term "hardcore gamer" it is almost unanimously used by elitists who are as much of a danger to the industry as the so-called "casual gamers".

I don't think of it as elitist as much as I think of it as having a firm basis in reality, and even if you don't like it, will you DENY that what I'm saying is true?

I do realize however, that the definition of "hardcore" probably varies from person to person.

If you play and enjoy games I view you as a gamer. Nothing more and nothing less. There are people who play more casual games like PvZ or Facebook games exclusively and they are still gamers, even if they don't wish to identify themselves as such (can't say I blame them honestly). I don't view COD games as casual games either. I don't know if I'd put it on the same level as something like Demon's Souls or other deeper games, but I don't view it the same as PvZ or Peggle.

So what do you call the people who enjoy both the CoD franchise and Demon's Souls? The more you post the more ridiculous you end up sounding.

I do because it serves the lowest common denominator, anybody can pick up and play Call of Duty and get somewhere in it.

However, not anybody can pick up a game like Demon's Souls and make progress without pain and sacrifice.

Just like not anybody could pick up the NES version of Ninja Gaiden and expect to progress in it.

Dark Souls will be the same kind of ass kicking, and I welcome the challenge.
