There is nothing innovating in Dark Souls/Demon Souls. All it is, is taking rpg like aspects(I guess?) in a time period related to the middle ages, though more mystical like LOTR maybe, and adding AI that is not intelligent, but seems intelligent since they have an advantage over you(stronger/more health). But they don't make any smart moves from what I have seen, they just crowd over you, rape you since they do more damage and then you eventually figure out that holding down the block button will block every attack.

Basically what you are saying is that every game should be made so that the AI has an unfair advantage over you?

It's never unfair, when you get hit, or when you die because you didn't react properly, the onus is entirely on you.

Wait? You haven't played it, know nothing about it, and you're criticising it?

From what I saw, it was just run around and make sure to hold out your 2 inch shield that blocks all weapons and that you don't get hit from the back. What is so amazing about this? I seriously don't understand what makes this game so innovating, it's just the same as most other games in terms of combat.

I watched some live streams that were posted here about it that were recommended by Fail.

Ninja Gaiden for the NES has combat, you run and jump around, you swing your sword, there's nothing innovative or amazing about it, I seriously don't understand why people view it as a challenge

Woah where did I say it wasn't a challenge? I asked why everyone thinks the combat is so amazing. In another thread(Skyrim vs this) someone said the combat was wayyy better in this game, how so?

Pick it up, play it, some truths become self-evident with personal experience.

easy win for me since it won't win goty on pc, and neither will it win it on consoles.

Sadly, it probably won't win game of the year from the mainstream media, as the game is too punishing for mainstream reviewers to pick up and beat before they are able to do a full review which includes completing the game.

I am Sad Keanu.

Ya like installing Origin and realizing its a good app and exactly like Steam?

That's for another thread entirely, I would not install Origin knowing it's malware/spyware by design, and even worse, it comes from EA.

You know what, nevermind I am not gonna keep derailing and turning this into an argument.

Yeah lemme go quickly spend $250+ to test out this game. Oh wait, I only play on PC since that is the platform I support, my bad.

Well, if you have other human beings who might be considered friends, in the traditional sense of the word, they might have this thing called a Playstation 3 or an Xbox 360 that they might be kind enough to let you play it on.

Jeez, do you really want me to do everything for you? But on another note, I'd say that's $250 well spent, plus add Demon's Souls to the mix for another $20, and I'd say you got yourself a bargain.

Oh so Origin has cloud services, sells 3rd party games, VoIP, achievement lists, and allows me to install non supported games to their client? Oh wait Origin doesn't do that...

Origin is fine, but isn't exactly like Steam.

Play the game first then you might have an argument.

It's ok Climber, there's nothing wrong with him forming an opinion, even if it isn't what would be considered a fully informed opinion, he's nonethless entitled to his opinion, however wrong it is. I have no problem with this.

However, I agree that if he had some personal experience playing the game, it would allow him a greater sense of perspective that comes along with personally experiencing it.

I mean, think about it, it's great and all if me and you bloviate and rave about how exhilirating it is to have to watch every step because death is always imminent, but how do you convey that to someone use using something as shitty as feeble words to try to adequately express that kind of experience?

You can't, unfortunately.

So it must be done with personal experience, it's the only way to fully comprehend the glory that is Demon's Souls and Dark Souls.

Ok you are really asking for it. So you can make an opinion about MW2, even though you never played it, yet I can't make an opinion on this game?

Don't get it twisted, I said it's fine if you have an opinion, even if it isn't a FULLY INFORMED one.

Reading comprehension is paramount.

It's no different than any other kind of opinion me or you may have in life, if you asked me my opinion of say, current affairs in Libya and how they affect Syria, I would say that I can't formulate a fully informed opinion of that because i'm not aware of all the current events and factors involved enough to make a fully educated opinion on it.

There's different degrees of opinion, I thought that was common knowledge :p

What the fuck was this thread about?

The state of gaming, in general, past, present, and future.

Beards, how you can grow a beard just playing a game like Demon's Souls and by extension, Dark Souls.

Manly games.

In no particular order, the difficulty of Ninja Gaiden, Demon's Souls, Dark Souls, and Contra.

Then there's Hello Kitty Island Adventure, which is a perjorative for most games released these days that hold your hand and lack any true challenge, then there's the unrelenting pitiless masters known as Demon's Souls and Dark Souls that are a blast to the good old 8-bit era when games were actually hard and challenging.

Origin and Steam.

How much better Dark Souls will be than Skyrim.

Why the lack of standards has led to a steep decline in the quality of games in terms of difficulty, overall experience, stripped out features, and dumbed down experiences.

We even mentioned how most games these days seem to give you achievements and trophies just for watching the first cutscene or reaching the first checkpoint, and how games have checkpoints every 5 feet, and how refreshing it is to play a game like Demon's Souls and Dark Souls which don't have those in the traditional sense of the word.

We also discussed how innovative the online element of Dark Souls and Demon's Souls is.

Well, there's lots of wonderful rants and riffs in here, and I've enjoyed all the opinions thrown around.

I'm not going to make a list of which does what and what they don't do. My point is hes a major hypocrite and anyone who takes him serious is dumb. Which i'm sure most people don't.

So basically, your rant is "don't buy/play games that support DLC/Origin/stripped content", correct?

Show me how I'm wrong, you can't, can you? lol

It's pretty simple to accuse someone of all that, but it's hard to actually back it up with anything resembling facts or substance because there is none.

Dark Souls has no DLC, what you get is the full version of the game, unlike other games which try to foist DLC on you. I couldn't even get the free DLC that came with my copy of Dragon Age Origins to work, Origin is a horrible download service, people are posting about how their downloads of BF3 and other games were unable to be completed and had to actually be started over because of how bad Origin is implemented.

So why the fuck are you playing Battlefield: Bad Company 2, Borderlands, Dragon Age, Fallout 3, Mass Effect, and Oblivion? hahahaha you wanker :p

did you even see how many hours i have in BFBC2?

I didn't buy ANY DLC for Dragon Age Origins.

Yes, I own Borderlands, it's a good game, I enjoyed it.

Fallout 3 was ok, I kind of lost interest in it about halfway. I bought it for Steam in spite of having the disc version because I figure sooner or later, I'll find the will to play through it and complete it.

Mass Effect sucked.

Oblivion came out in 2006, you're seriously going to criticize me for owning that game?

I will, and I will laugh while doing it.

While your point is respectable. "fight the power, don't buy the game", you still support that very power you're criticizing.

I think what's more important here, is we're all fucking nerds who are going to play games. Who the hell cares what DLC or game we enjoy playing. I need a cigarette.

You know what I've started finding amusing about the ignorant ranting, Fail is so closed minded that he can't even comprehend people might like MORE than 1 type of game. You must like Dark souls OR you must like halo/COD. As if liking or disliking Dark Souls is a measure of the standards of a gamer and that by liking it, it precludes you from liking the "lesser" games. And somehow by disliking Dark Souls you also must dislike challenging games, because apparently Dark Souls is the only challenging game and that's the only reason people play it, so if you dont like it by extension you dont like any challenging games.

Fail has definitely made some good points in this thread, no doubt... unfortunately they're buried in piles of ignorant lashing out and just straight up naivety. Coz abusing people and showing your ignorance is a great way to convince the masses to join your crusade

it makes me wonder how this thread went so long/far when others have been closed/locked for less.
this is pretty much how all threads go once he starts opening his mouth.

I don't think there's anything wrong with noting that there are plenty of games less challenging than Demon's Souls and Dark Souls and acknowledging that games like DS (either one) is more than likely a niche product that appeals to the most hardcore of gamers and that not everybody is cut out for that kind of experience.

It's not an original sentiment of any sort, in fact, many reviewers have echoed the same thing in their reviews.

Besides, this discussion hasn't broken any rules, we're all having a civil discussion here, and for the most part, all we have here is a difference of opinions, there's absolutely nothing wrong with having a great discussion about the direction of gaming, and as a side note, advising people to check out a really great gaming experience in Demon's Souls and Dark Souls.

Yeah... but that's not what you're doing, or maybe that's what you think you're doing and you're just so bad at communication that you fail badly at it.

The only thing you're good at is spouting the same hypocritical bullshit over and over and then avoiding people who post any kind of logical counter intuitive arguments...get over yourself.

This thread has run it's course, I enjoyed the back and forth, and I think, quite frankly, both sides made good points, even if those who think differently than me are in the wrong, and I say that gently :)

There's nothing wrong with being on either side of the issues though, some people are content to sit down and just play whatever they buy without thinking about the consequences of their buying decisions, and I guess that's ok.

On the other hand, I will rail against those people, because they are doing the rest of us a disservice.
