Gigabyte X58A-UD3R Thread

OK, here's a list of whine reports, now post #3 in the thread (edited a useless post of mine to replace it with this): http://hardforum.com/showpost.php?p=1035302454&postcount=3. If you've posted in this thread and I missed you or messed it up then privmsg me. If you haven't posted yet then post here; do not privmsg me even if I haven't added you (please). I'll get around to it when I can.

It might be a good idea to list what Rev board people are reporting along with the PSU. While I am one of the only few with a Rev 2 board, just in case it makes a difference, it would be good to list.

so does this mean newegg have both rev 1 and 2 right now? ship out randomly?

Okay. I tagged everyone except Slither as rev 1.0 and Slither as 2.0. Let me know if I messed it up on anyone but it probably doesn't matter.

@dandragonrage

Hey mine is a

Rev 2

Seasonic S12+ 650W

C1e noise when on.

When c1e off, no more psu hissing noise.

But there is still a very high frequency low sound. You can hear it if you focus.

I'm using Corsair 620HX

Should I wait for Rev 2.0 or is there no real difference between Rev 1.0 apart from better phase change ?

Don't want to miss the deal on newegg

I have a Corsair 750 TX I want to pair with this board. Last shipments from Newegg have been from Tennessee. Will I get the revision 2.0 board and is there still a definitive problem with this board making noise?

Yes. You will have the noise. Get the Asus or replace your power supply.

No one has reported getting Rev 2 from Nashville. Also, Rev 1 boards are still shipping from California apparently.

I have the 750TX with Rev 2 board and there is whine. See the first page for a list.

Thanks I guess I'll go with ASUS or EVGA FTW 3

FWIW, I hooked my X58A-UD5 (rev1.0) to a Corsiar 1000hx power supply, and it also has the squeaks when c1e is enabled. I was going to RMA and go for a UD7, but after looking around, I think ALL of the X58A boards with certain power supplies do it. If everything else is working and I don't have any other problems with this board, I'm just going to leave the c1e off and keep it.

I just order from newegg today, my shipment is up in BALDWIN PARK, hopefully I get Rev 2.

Mine from newegg showed up.

Rev 2.0

Wondering what the difference is though, anyone know

Todd, where was your one shipped from ?

And report us the PSU with any coil whines please :)

UPS just dropped mine off. It shipped from California and I got Rev 2.0

What are the differences between the two?

Rev 2 have 12 Phase and Rev 1 is 8 Phase I remember..

And there are some update on some component IIRC.

Rev2 Differences I've Found.

LAN Chipset
1 x Realtek RTL8111D chip (10/100/1000 Mbit)
--> 1 x Realtek RTL8111E chip (10/100/1000 Mbit)

New Unique Featurs on Rev 2.0
Support for ON/OFF Charge

That's only "spec" difference I found on GB website.

http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/products/product-page.aspx?pid=3305#sp

It also has the 12 phase power, If you look at a picture of rev 1 and rev 2 you will see it. Either way rev 2 still makes the whine. I am lucky to have one out of 2 boards that does not whine, I sent the other whining board back and got a Rampage III Extreme.

Rev2.0 w/same power supply I used on last 2 systems. No wine, just like last 2.

Although the new LAN chipset was not auto-detected in windows so that required a step of installing them which slowed down my entire setup process

rev 1.0 board and Corsair 850TX. Can't say I really noticed any coil whine. I stuck my ear next to it with the side case off and in the right area I thought I heard a very faint whine but not really.

Also I've got a cooler master hyper 212+ in push/pull with 1 fan plugged into cpu fan and the other 4 pin into the system fan plug. I found the option to disable cpu fan adjustments in the bios and have the fan in the cpu slot running at 2k RPMs but I cant figure out how to get the other one to run at max speed, any ideas?

Rev 2.0 with a Corsair 620HX. When the hard drive runs continuously, I can hear the whine. The whine is from the power supply, not the motherboard. It is quite faint, and I think I can live with it. Although I doubt that a bios revision would correct anything, here's to hoping.

I just got a Rev 1.0 out from Newegg ( shipped from BALDWIN PARK, CA, US )

not quite sure how some people got Rev 2.0 ... :(

Been out of the gaming scene for a while, decided to get back in...

Just got done wrenching a new system together and hit a wall during the first boot attempt.

Basic Specs:

GIGABYTE GA-X58A-UD3R
G.SKILL 6GB (3 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600
HIS H585FN1GD Radeon HD 5850
hec X-Power Pro 600W
Intel Core i7-920
Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus
Seagate 500GB 7200RPM 32MB Buffer

Ok, now my problem is that while everything powers on and sounds fine (all fans running including GPU) I get no monitor output whatsoever. Tried two different monitors and VGA/DVI & HDMI with no luck.

Upon doing some google digging i'm now concerned i'm not getting out put because i've got an underrated PSU for the 5850. Even though newegg said its CrossfireX ready and blah blah blah, on ati's site (http://ati.amd.com/products/certifie...ies.html#pstop) my PSU seems to be only rated up to a 4870.

Would this prevent any output from the card and the symptoms i'm seeing (Basically monitors not getting an output and going into sleep mode)?

But after some more searching I found this thread and have seen several X58A-UDR3A threads where the same thing has happened (no video output and no post).

I've since tried booting off one DIMM (and swapped out each of the 3 sticks and tried to boot off of each one) to no avail. The memory is in the 2/4/6 white slots and still nothing.

Anyone got any ideas? Mobo dead?

Corsair TX750
Rev 1 here

There was a noticeable whine, but disabling C1E fixed it.

If I had to guess and I do.... I think you are right, the power supply is a piece of crap.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Image... V2.2 SLI Ready CrossFire Ready Power Supply

600W my ass.
if you add the 2 12V rails you get 52 Amps which at 12V is 624 Watts disregarding the +5 etc. What this tells me is the supply is not rated fairly and since there is no "combined" load figures on the label as well as no CB logo which would indicate it has at least been looked by the the Certification Board that the supply meets ATX specs for loading, voltage and ripple I would get that POS out of my box as soon as possible. $39 says it all.

But since at boot the machine is in 2D and the card not drawing a lot of power I would think it should boot if the supply is working. Been wrong before.

But first, loosen the heatsink screws 2 turns each, unplug everything except video and memory. See what happens. Then beg or borrow a known good video card or take your card and try it in another system. See what happens.

Your case should have come with a speaker or buzzer - hook that up and pull the video card and see if you get a beep code. If you do not have a speaker/buzzer connected to the motherboard speaker pins at the front panel connections go to Radio Shack and get one or rig one up.

tested for awhile, no coil whine at all, not even with EIST/C1E on.

but the problem is EIST/C1E seems kind of broken, the voltage did not drop but increase while CPU got downclock...WTF?

I loosened up the headtsink screws and tried again - no luck.

Another thing I have a question on is this - Do I need to have the power supply plugged in to the 2X4 ATX supply (to the top left corner of the CPU)?

The first time I tried booting I only had the 24 pin (i think its 24, the main ATX connection) and the CPU fan stayed on even though it didn't post.

I later plugged in the 2X4 ATX connection and now on boot the CPU fan starts for about 2-3 seconds and then turns off (which i'm assuming is not a good thing).

Do that connection need power or not? It seems like i'm going backwards with it plugged in...

Thanks!

Well I just took the everything out of the case and tried booting it up on the counter top thinking maybe the board was shorting out somewhere in the case...

No luck.

So is everyones educated guess that the motherboard is the key problem here rather than the PSU? I mean the PSU may be underrated but if the fans spinning on it should at least work booting in 2D?

It is normal for the board to turn on briefly and then turn off when power is applied. It is also normal for it to turn on briefly, turn off, and turn on when you press the power button. It is annoying but nothing more. Of course, if the board refuses to turn on for more than a brief moment at all, then that is obviously a problem.

What I wonder is why you would have ever tried to boot the board without an EPS12v/ATX12v connector hooked up. I'm holding back my insults here.

It could still be your PSU. After all, just booting into Windows uses a huge amount of power from the PSU because everything but the GPU would have been running at their max. And no cheap 600W PSU can deliver more than half of that amount at realistic internal PSU temperatures. In other words, you effectively have a 250 to 300W PSU labeled as a "600W" unit. And yes, an underpowered PSU would definitely shut off or blow up even when the system is trying to boot into Windows - and when that happens, something within some of the connected components might have shorted out as well.

Why dont you get a 3.99 buzzer and see what the beep code are ?

If you still run into trouble make a new thread and I will try to help and you will get more help once you are out of the middle of all the whine.

Yes you need the 2x4 its is the cpu power and now because the cpu fan moved it shows it is getting power.

Either of those power supplies are good ones.

Did you plug in any extra power cables to the video card ? New cards need a cable to the video card from the power supply.

I'm also wondering if my boot failure is due to memory compatibility. Some forum threads are stating that the DDR3 1600 might not work with the rev 1.0 boards w/o a BIOS flash. Then when you check Gigabytes website you see all these new BIOS updates features increased "memory compatibility".

The rev 2.0 boards have an even more updated bios. Is there anyway to flash the bios without the thing posting to begin with? Or do I RMA and pray that newegg sends me a 2.0 board?
