First Revolution screens

Yep, that's right. The Revolution has to do 1/3 of the work to produce the same image in SD that the XBox would have to do in HD.

It's not that simple. Even if you were rendering a scene loaded with pixel shader effects and high-polygon models, the resolution you render at wouldn't make that much of a difference.

Say if you go from 640x480 to 1280x960 in FEAR or Call of Duty 2... it's rendering 4 times as many pixels, but the frame rate doesn't get reduced to a quarter of what it was (probably more like just over half).

Upscale delay in games is annoying though, not noticable on the XBox and my 360, nor is it noticible in some PS2 games.

I notice it in games like Guitar Hero and DDR. It doesn't bother me when I'm playing, as I tend to read ahead in those games and hit things on the beat rather than when the thing is on the thing... but I do have some friends who are visual players with sense of rhythm who can AAA stuff in DDR and do okay in Guitar Hero who get frustrated playing on my LCD tv.

Its not just the resolution. At SD resolutions you can use lower detail models than you would need at HD resolutions, same thing with textures. Higher res means higher detail is needed to look nice. I actually think a lot of games look better at 1024x768 than at 1600x1200.

Also, I've heard that the games press are still barred from publishing any revolution screenshots, so they may just be promo renders.
congratulations you win, final product will not look like this, it never does regardless what console its being developed for

I don't know what games you play but in my experience, especially with the company in question, preview renders look pretty damn close to the final products.

I still don't believe them since I see no HUDs and such, however... I highly doubt it will be far off because it's Ubisoft we're talking about here, not EA/Bizarre/2K/Sony/etc. In fact, 2x the Gamecube's power would look better than these.

I never said Q4 = mature. I said I simply feel using a mouse/keyboard and playing online is more competitively mature than dancing around a tv set with a remote.

whatever that means...

i'm pretty damn sure you don't need to dance around the TV.. it's been stated millions of times that you don't have to dance around jump around or wave your arms everywhere..

never said the games would suck... just that you shouldn't expect graphics much better than an xbox.

Even the rumored specs for the Revolution would thrash and trounce the Xbox.

Correct even if on nothing more than the idea that
gamecube ~ xbox
rev = (gamecube*2)
rev > xbox

~ means about

Alright whatever, I guess I just outgrew Nintendo. Believe me, I used to love them as a kid.

Was always playing Snes and what not.

"Outgrowing" Nintendo? Right. There are many ironic things about that statement. Alright, enjoy Quake 4. Hopefully you're playing it on Microsoft's console in HD, since 15fps is ub3r l33t.

So now we are blameing a bad port job on a console?

I'm not sure your point about the models is true. The models look the same either way, except that the higher resolution reduces aliasing. Ergo, a model with lots of hard edges (a low poly model) should look much, much better at higher resolution. You make an interesting point about the textures, but also remember that low resolutions _limit_ the maximum quality of textures. Also, remember that resolution limits draw distance/detail.

I think it's pretty safe to say that the PS3 and 360 will be capable of better looking graphics than the Revolution. This doesn't mean the Revo is dead in the water, although it's going to hurt when it comes to "read the back of the box for screenshots" demographic.

He sure won't be enjoying it on the Revolution, which apparently doesn't even have the horsepower to run it.

Only in a f-a-n-b-o-y's world can lack of computing power be an advantage.

We'll see. The revmote is designed with FPS games in mind, pretty much, so we'll see what gets ported and what doesn't. Quake 4 for the X360 was a horrible port, because it wasn't optimized for the console's archaic hardware architecture (it was literally a port). Mind you, it's still more powerful than this console will be, but 84% of the population won't care about HD for a good time to come, so the visual disparity won't be as pronounced, if at all. That's not what I'm arguing, anyway. What I'm arguing is that Shuttle's comment is extremely juvenile.

The only console to put out screenies and pretty much match them is the 360, end of story.

The ps3 might, but we don't know yet. Keep in mind Ubisoft put this out, and they've duped us before.

I hope this are close to what it will look like, but I won't hold my breath, that is really all I'm saying.

Cheap + good graphics = me giving the Revo a chance.

why are you guys bickering over a really shitty port?

So true.

It is sort of funny how when people are so into defending what they like they'll say anything, no matter how rediculous, to back them up.

Why don't they just say they like it, and that is that.

The bottom line is all of us will no doubt at least try all three of these consoles and end up with probably 2 of them. Why do we always have 6 page threads that by the 4th page have degenerated into argument on pixel shading rendering and how much of the population has or will have HDTV's?

-EDIT-

-LOL, nevermind, I already know the answer. Its the same reason my friend and I argue about software development and talk about the OSI model for hours, because we are high tech geeks/techies.

Then again, we all win this award here sometimes :p

Nice. You can change the numbers at the end of the RS (i.e. RS10.jpg) to see more of the scans. They are touched up a bit, I think, but considering how the models are not that high poly and the resolution has been confirmed as 480p widescreen, I don't think these screens are far off. I just wish there were pics with HUDs and such so that I could really believe them, but I believe there is a ban and NDAs that prevent any "real" screenshots from being posted until E3.

I also wish that the scans of the George Harrison interview (rs13 and 14 I think?) were clearer and of higher quality. Apparently he reveals that the Revolution will ship with around 20 games at launch, 2/3 of which are third party, and that even more are expected within the launch window... but I haven't seen picture proof of that.

I can't wait for E3!! First day on the floor will be at Nintendo's booth!

I love revolution threads and the 10 page heated debates that they all set off... ;D

looking at those screens, i wouldn't be surprised if those were renders instead of actual screenshots. if they were renders, let's hope ubi can hit their target, and if they were real, even better.

some people have mentioned the lack of HUD as proof that they're renders, but maybe ubi's going for a HUD-less design. they've done it before in king kong, and since they're going for realism and immersion, it makes sense not to have your health plastered on the bottom of the screen.

Saying under powered computing is an advantage is a real good clue as to how rabid the fan--boy bug runs in someone.

Saying MS innovated online gaming in the console market is pretty much fact.

Nice try though ;)

Q4 on the pc dude, not 360. I sold my 360 because I can't even get into that anymore.

Firewall, give this a read. I don't agree with everything in there, but if you don't think that there are advantages (on top of those clear disadvantages) to not having an emphasis on raw power, you are not as grounded in fact as you think :)

That said, who's gauging the raw power of these consoles? We know for a fact that the X360 is not as powerful as it sounds (3 3.2ghz cores!! l33t! doesn't matter if they are crippled in various manners, not at all... 3x3.2!!) and this console could very well be more powerful than these rumoured specs give it credit for. Until the thing is near release, we truly won't know.

These rumoured specs could very well be underestimating it, anyway. A recent interview with one of Nintendo's reps in Game Informer magazine (the same article that revealed the Red Steel title), he had the following to say on the "souped up Gamecube" claims:

On the topic of horsepower, Harrison said a souped-up GameCube would have most likely performed as poorly as the original. Hence why Nintendo chose a different route. He did assure, though, that Revolution will be a multiple of GameCube's technical capacities.

Note that I believe he was speaking on why the "revmote" wasn't released on the Cube (as was originally planned), the system didn't have enough juice to cut down the input latency if I remember reading correctly (hence his choice of the "performed poorly" quote).

True, we don't know if those specs are real. To say that not having an emphasis on raw power simply is ludicrous. A consoles job is to be able to drive software. It is a dsoftware developers job to make a great looking, and great playing game. If they know they don't have the power they need to drive the ideas they have, that hurts the console.

If what I'm saying isn't true, why do video cards get more power every 6 to 8 months. To even further prove my point, look at the new physics card coming out for the pc. Its sole purpose is to add to game play.

More power = better games, end of story, don't bother arguing because to say otherwise means you smoke crack.

More power != good games. I assure you I am not smoking crack. I could sit here all day explaining why the above is true, but I invite you to purchase yourself a Nintendo DS as a demonstration why your assumption is dead wrong.

One little handheld, that in YOUR OPINION has good games, doesn't offset my video card and physix card esample that drives the billion dollar pc gaming industry.

Nice try though ;)

p.s., where do you get it? it seems great!

Myself, and the other 15 million people who are enjoying their 'little handhelds' immensely, got the DS at various electronics outlets... you should likely try to get it there ;)

i don't agree with that.... i've played shitty games on powerful hardware.. we all have.... i like horse power as much as the next guy.. but to say more power = better games is just plain retarded.. it is beyond retarded

the driving force for new hardware is that the new games can take advantage of it..

Totaly unrelated to consoles.

Like when CnC gens came out.. I wanted to upgrade from 1GB to 2gb.. just so lan games could last longer than 1 hr with out bogging down like crazy. :p
