Fallout 4

why's it so important to plan out your build beforehand?...I never had any issues with any of the previous Fallout games just jumping in and choosing my perks etc on the spot...

Different playstyles for different people. A lot of games tend to release perk or talent planners beforehand to hype up the game and let theorists get to work.

Because it's directly related to Fallout 4, and you can interact with it. The same reason why the (currently functionally useless) phone app got thousands of reviews within hours of release.

Maximized returns based on play style.

Open world games tend to support a lot of different play styles, and depending on your preference of play you might need a certain configuration to make that play style possible ... even though all play styles are eventually possible (if you level high enough) it could take a long time to reach the skills you really want to use (if you don't plan ahead) ... that said, if you don't really have a preference then you are right that planning is less important

Lots of variables are going to affect which build you prefer ... if you want to do a lot of weapon and armor modding you are looking at intelligence and strength ... if you want to do a lot of city building then charisma and intelligence ... lots of killing favors perception, endurance, and agility ... lots of exploring favors perception and intelligence ... lots of scavenging favors luck and strength ... etc

it's not that these things aren't possible with any build but a poorly planned build could take you 5 levels to get where you want to be ... not a big deal if you are a grinder but maybe more of a concern for someone who is not ... it will be interesting to see how all these different styles of play like FO4 ... it is difficult to serve that many masters but Bethesda can do it if anyone can

Part of me thinks it'd be cool to build a melee character. The weapons I've seen look super awesome. It's just, hard to imagine being very effective against Deathclaws with a flaming sword.

My plan is to pick em off far far away.

Pretty sure I eventually was 1 shotting em toward the end of NV.

Fallout is not a graphics intensive powerhouse series of games...Fallout 4 added a few bits of eye candy but I still don't see it crippling anyone's system

What system specs do you have? Maybe after you figure out what you need to replace the most (GPU) then you can run it. There is a For Sale / Trade forum here remember. ;)

I got an almost 8 year old system with a Q9550 in it and a Raid card in the lone 16x slot for a server\htpc, I have a MSI GT70 with a 670MX and a Lenovo X230.

Right now i'm hoping the 670mx will pull the game, but if not, I think i'll end up upgrading the card to a 970m.

I dont think it will make sense to upgrade the HTPC with high end components only to have it generate more noise and heat, also competing for the TV to play the game.

Though really, with the way life is right now, ill be lucky if I could even find time to play the game period.

yeah it seems mainly about avoiding the grind and maximizing your skills...for me the grind is what makes open world type of games so much fun...I'm going to spend hundreds of hours exploring and playing so I don't need to get the fastest route to a particular point...I'm fine with taking the long way

for me games like Dark Souls require a specific plan on the type of build you want as you can get screwed with bad choices where you can't progress any further...Fallout and Elder Scrolls don't have that type of penalty

you might be able to get away with a 670MX with some graphics tweaks...the minimum requirement for PC is a 550Ti

That might be pushing it, if i were you i and had a ps4 or xb1 id just get it on that instead of that pc.

It's been a while since I played FO3 or NV, but in those games I believe perks existed independently. It was just a list you chose from. In FO4 they are tied to your SPECIAL stats.

Someone else raised a good point about bobbleheads, it's possible obtaining a bobblehead increases the max value of that SPECIAL from 10 to 11, along with adding +1 to your current value. This way, no matter when you obtain the bobblehead, you can still reach 11 SPECIAL.

Or more simply, the game amends an additional (+1) to your current SPECIAL and makes no other changes.
So "5" Strength before the bobblehead would become "5 (+1)" after the bobblehead.

For the most part ... also, your priority of grinding ... the city building mechanic is a new one that we haven't had in previous Bethesda games ... if you want to establish trade routes between cities you need the local leader perk at Charisma 6 ... if you had put no points into this it would take 6 levels to acquire this skill (5 to increase stat to 6 and 1 to take the perk) ... if you plan to do a lot of lockpicking and hacking then you need perception (lockpick) and intelligence (hacking) to be able to attempt the more advanced varieties ... since people will need to balance their character development to match their preferences it is just a method for the players who are more specific in their needs to optimize their experience ... for those who have no real preferences it is overkill and a wasted activity

some games get around the mechanic by allowing you to change your build retroactively (like Titan Quest) ... they charge you resources but allow you to reconfigure to the way you want ... since FO and ES don't use that mechanic, some players tend to plan out the build ahead to maximize their personal enjoyment of the game by focusing on the areas they prefer

Ok so I just tried to activate this on steam using the key given to me by gmg and I go an error:

Sorry, but the following items are not available for purchase in this country. Your purchase has been canceled.

Is it because it's not available for pre-load or did something go seriously wrong?

What country are you in?

yep i see it as well, had to restart steam to see it.

(the pre load that is)

OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I just opened GMG on my browser and Hola VPN'D FROM CHINA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ouch lol :O

Yea ouch, hell I pre-ordered this in JUNE!

I super hope GMG helps me out here. I know I've read on their site they don't give refunds once keys have been issued. I told em what happened now I just have to keep my fingers crossed.

I'm gonna buy it again on Sunday if I haven't heard anything. This is getting pre-loaded come hell or high water.

Edit: Unless someone in China wants to do the same thing for the US and we can do tradesies =(

before you buy it again sunday you could always try to vpn to china with steam to use the key?

not sure if that works.

Preloading now!

The VPN works with the browser, not steam.

i know how Hola works, but you can set up a vpn to take over all outside connections in windows.

and access steam through a chinese ip and to steam it looks like you log in from china so a Chinese key should work.

But don't you think that would mess up my other steam games? I don't know, seems really risky.

I'm afraid I might be screwed on this one.

won't Valve figure out you're not really in China or Siberia or wherever by looking at your account and seeing that you're only in these countries right before a new game comes out and magically are back in the USA shortly afterwards...seems like Valve doesn't really care unless maybe you are continually buying games for cheap from other regions

I would think the only time a problem would happen is if you are buying the game directly with steam, then it would actually affect how much money valve makes, but you are buying a key from an outside source it doesnt really matter to valve where you got the key as long as its not originally purchased with a stolen credit card.

And since it was a GMG key you know it was an authentic key from an authorized dealer, the price you paid for it is of no concern to valve.

One thing with the PIPBoy app ... it reminded me how badly I suck at Missile Command  ... I wonder if there are going to be many Hologames to play on the PIPBoy

Well that was a nice 20min preload. I bet it will take longer to unpack the preload and install!

It should be fine, and wont screw up any games you currently own.

I'll try and find some evidence to substantiate this claim.

That's a valid point but I have 1300 hours and an $800 inventory in CS:GO that I really don't want to lose.

Yep, I never preload anymore, since for whatever reason, unpacking a 30GB+ game - even on a fast 850 Pro - takes longer than just waiting for the moment it unlocks and then downloading it unencrypted. 200Mbps connection.

Only if the Steam servers don't take a shit as everyone else tries to pre-load at the moment it unlocks as well. :p
