Plenty of people will buy the right Sony exclusives on EGS. You certianly don't have to, but they'll get my money, and plenty of others. The data we've seem coming out of the apple lawsuit shows that epics exclusivity plays are bringing in users, and they've argueably never had an exclusive as big as some of sonys first party gems.

Despite what angry gamers want to believe, epic seems to know what they are doing. They wouldn't offer up $200M if they didn't think it would play out in their favor.

Even though some folks will flat out refuse to see any positive in what EGS is doing, this is a perfect example of something that benefits the entire PC platform. If we get top tier Sony exclusives, games that would never come to PC without Epics intervention, that's a win. I don't see how having Sony titles exclusive to epic is somehow worse than not having them at all.
The situation would be the same, not worse. The real tell will be how well Kingdom Hearts is selling, but we'll probably never find out since just like Valve, Epic doesn't share that data outside of court proceedings. At least with Valve we can get player numbers. Whether or not Squeenix decides to keep releasing exclusive to Epic in the future will tell us what we want to know. Publishers like Nacon have abandoned the Epic exclusivity route already.

I can't tell if your speaking specific to you or not. Obviously, if you have a flat out refusal to buy anything on epic, than yeah, nothing changes for you. But for all the poeple who don't mind epic, that's a pretty huge win. Would you not agree that, even if your not playing them, having AAA Sony exclusives come to PC strengthens the platform overall?

Kingdom Hearts is a great potential example of this. Since we don't know the details regarding the games development on PC or EGSs exclusivity terms, I can only speculate, but I wonder none the less if the game would exist at all on PC if not for Epcis involvement. As one of my absolute all time favorite franchises, and one that I resolved long ago will never be on PC, the fact that I'm playing it at this very moment at 4k 120fps on my PC is a literal dream come true. If I've got epic to thank for that, I'll happily sing their praise and utilize their inferior platform to enjoy it.

As to whether or not KH is selling well on PC, Id be inclined to say EGS is the less relevant metric contributing to its success (or lack of). SE priced these games ludicrously bad. Fans of the series already own these games, probably multiple copies, given that they've been re-released on 3 generations of consoles. SE commands $170 on PC for a collection of games that on Playstation is normally $99, and right now, is on sale for $25. Thats a fucking monstrous markup on PC, one that only a very small slice of die hard PC playing KH fans are going to be willing to pay. If the games underperform, and I expect they will, I'm 100% blaming SEs greed.

Oh, the pricing for KH3 is the main problem for sure but locking themselves to Epic just makes it worse. Mostly because there will be no price competition like there would be on Steam via 3rd party key sellers like Humble/Greenman etc..

The exclusives are not working out very well for Epic except if a couple of titles. I saw it reported the other day from the court filings that Anno 1800, Ubisoft/Epic exclusives sold only 30k copies on Epic. At its peak users, there were 25k people playing the game on Steam. It had been preorder there before the exclusive change to Uplay and Epic only, so people got to keep the game on Steam, like the Metro Exodus drama. Mechwarrior 5 apparently only sold 51k copies on Epic for that exclusive.

In regards to KH, I still have to speculate if they would be on PC at all if not for Epic. If they are actively campaigning Sony to bring console exclusive games to PC, it makes sense they are doing the same for other non-Sony games. If that's the case, locking into to epic may very well be the only reason there are any sales to be had at all.

Id agree that many of epics exclusivity deals seem misguided though. Metro and MW5 don't seem like the sort of games that will convert steam diehards. BL3 seemed a lot more lucrative. So does Kingdom Hearts (if it were priced even remotely reasonably).

Some of us are "never Epic" much like Epic is "never Steam" with trying to court indie games. I don't care if it's on Steam, but I will never buy or claim anything from Epic.

I know a lot of poeple are ridigdly anti-epic. I don't agree with it and have no qualms about spending money on epic, but I also don't have a problem with others choosing not to. I'm not here to try and change anyones mind on the matter, I only chimed in to say that if epic is paying to bring games to PC that might otherwise never come to PC, that seems to me like a net positive for the entire community.

Every time I hear this it sounds dumber and dumber.
"I hate Epic for doing the same thing every other publisher strives to do while actually giving more to developers instead of taking more."

Gamers and gaming culture are generally pretty obnoxious and childish but this stance is even more so than most. It shows such ignorance in how the industry works and proves gamers only care about the dumbest shit. "Oh no! The button I have to push to play my game is here instead of there!" It's so incredibly dumb.

Supposedly they paid $250m for KH exclusives. BL3 didn't do that well. I forget what Epic is claimed to have paid for that exclusive. Via reddit:

one would think that...
i still dont get all the hate. more options/places to buy should be a good thing...

I understand it to a certain extent. Steam is the dominant platform, they always have been. A decade ago, this was me. "Fuck EA, fuck Origin" was the name of the game when it came to light that Battlefield 3 would not be on Steam. I boycotted Mass Effect 3 for a very long time, despite really loving the first two games, because it was not on Steam. Eventually, I realized that we weren't wining that fight and I gave in. Rinse and repeat with uplay.

Today though... I've got steam, origin, uplay, battle net, Xbox launcher, gog galaxy, and epic installed. Plus the tack ons like Rockstar social club, Kalypsos shit, yadda yadda. Everyone has their own launcher. It's annoying, but it's the way PC gaming is now, so there's no point In fighting it.

Also, it helps that I think steam has become a cesspool for garbage that's hardly better than a mobile app store. There is just so much crap and every single day it gets worse and worse. Steam was far better as a closed, curated platform and I hope EGS stays that way. Beyond that, when I know what games I want, I Straight up do not care. I'll buy it whenever it's least expensive and life goes on.

It's not about "a different button." I have seven separate launchers/storefronts my games are spread among. I have many reasons for "never Epic," including Tim Sweeney having been an asshole his entire life, Epic's connections to China, the store lacking basic features like a functional search, the blasé attitude toward account security, and the aforementioned "not Steam" attitude in courting exclusives. This joke of a lawsuit against Apple is like vomit on top of a shit pie. Especially the part where Sweeney compared their fight for legally-enforced market disruption to the civil rights movement.

well said...the Epic haters give PC gamers a bad name...it's just another launcher...nothing wrong with Epic giving away free games to entice customers to use their product...it's done by literally every manufacturer in existence...to compete against Valve you need to use every means at your disposal

More interesting stuff. PGI had hoped to reach 1 million in sales of MechWarrior 5 on EGS because of the mass of gamers already on the store. Well needless to say they came up just a little bit short.

Obviously that's all Epic's fault and has nothing to do with the fact that Mechwarrior 5 was an ugly, buggy piece of shit where as Battle Tech was not.

It launches on Steam at the end of the month, so we'll see. Detroit: Become Human sold three times as many copies on Steam compared to Epic.

Imagine being so unreasonably bitter at a company you get angry at them for attempting to bring console exclusives to PC so millions of gamers, (esp in developing countries where consoles cost thousands of dollars and only the wealthy can buy them), can enjoy them on PC. smh.

Reasonable people, whether they dislike Epic or not, would be glad to see console exclusives come to PC regardless of launcher as it might demonstrate to other console only devs (esp the Japanese ones), that there might be a viable market there after all.

There are other gaming forums which are being a lot more analytical about the details leaking from the court case, and the consensus from the leaked documents is that Valve's effective monopoly has reached the point where a third party platform has no choice but to purchase timed exclusives to get a foothold in the market, whether they want to or not.

That would be nice, but I'm not seeing that scenario playing out. Horizon Zero Dawn came without Epic. It could be that with Microsoft buying up studios and IPs Sony is more reserved in the future though. So maybe that dynamic will change.

Sony is a lot more reserved with what they bring to PC. So far we have HZD and Days Gone (both of which are on Steam). I don't think Sony wants to support PC where they don't have to. HZD sold well but it's still a budding franchise. My guess is that forbidden west will not come to PC, and Sony is hoping some of the folks who enjoyed it on PC will pick up PS5s for the sequel. Days Gone was a bust, I think they're just trying to make a quick buck off a game that underperformed.

Their heavy hitters... Uncharted, tlou, God of war, spider man... I don't think Sony has any intention to bring those to PC. That said, I'm going to guess those are the sort of games epic is vying for with their $200M bid. If epic can flex enough cash to get Sony to port over franchises that they otherwise had no intentions of bringing to PC, that would be pretty cool. Maybe I'm totally wrong though. It'll be interesting to see how this shakes out

While steam is the big guy, there are other stores that function just fine, thing is that some of them like battle.net, uplay or origin are mostly for games those companies make themselves and/or are available on multiple storefronts.

Epic on the other hand has to few good games to make their store standout or succesfull, but they have tons of cash from fortnite which they are throwing out of the window, orignially Sweenty stated that he wanted to compete with steam so everyone would get something out of it, only he does not compete with steam, he goes for exclusives so there is no price war which benefits the customer, us customers only benefit now is supposedly that the developper get's a bigger chunk of the money so they can invest more in future projects, that a lot of the "extra" money will most likely end up at the publisher and not the developper is probably not something he cares about, though for smaller developpers this might be somewhat helpfull if you take away the issue that they might sell more copies if they can be found in more stores.

The Chines angle that seems to bother so many people these days I don't realy care about as beeing in Europe my data ends up abroad anyways, if not in China, it will be in the US

My stance has long been that they are competing the only way they can. They can't compete by way of cheaper prices because they dont control the prices. Publishers and developers do, and they wouldn't allow their products to be sold cheaper on epic because that devalues their games. It's the same reason certain companies won't work with GMG because of they discount games before launch. They can't compete on features and quality of life simply because Steam has 15 years of experience and growth on them. Same for library size. They are a small library because they are new and they are a closed, curated platform. EGS will likely have most or all or Steams features eventually, but expecting them to launch on par with a 15 year old platform is unrealistic.

The only ace epic has is money, and the only way it can turn that money into success is by force. Exclusives mean people have to download their platform to play certain games and the hope is the more you invest in the platform, the more willing you become to keep investing in the platform, even when you don't have to. You need lots of games for that so that you can appeal to the widest possible audience. I understand why people don't find epics methods very eloquent, but they seriously have no other way to compete. Long term, I think epic taking significant market share from Steam is a good thing. However they have to get there is fine by me.

As to the ties with China, that's a mixed bag. I don't like it, I understand why others dont like it. But, that's life in 2021. Most of what we own comes from China. My home is full of recording devices and I have a brick in my pocket that can see and hear everything I do, track everywhere I go, and know everything I look at online. Privacy is an illusion. If China wants to know what games I like, whatever, that's the least of my worries with China.

Axiom Verge 2 delayed

Three months after Axiom Verge 2 was finally confirmed for PC as an Epic Games Store exclusive, it has been delayed...instead of landing sometime in the first half of 2021 as expected, creator Thomas Happ announced that he needs just a little more time to get it done, and so instead it will be out sometime in the third quarter of the year, putting it between July 1 and September 30...

No clue if it's how those $10 coupons are supposed to work, but I downloaded Among Us (which is free right now) and got a $10 coupon after "buying" it for $0.
I ended up combining that with the current sale on Disco Elysium to get it for 1/2 off. I noticed that Kingdom Hearts 1.5/2 was also on sale.

Yeah, the coupon is free, you can just claim it without a purchase, but if you claim a free game it will also give it to you.

thats how it works. you grab something, even freebies, that has the coupon attached and you can use it for something that will be minimum $14.99(CAN) after the discount applies.

Anyone know how to disable Epic ingame overlay? I never bothered looking into it because it's not too intrusive. But now it's causing issues for me so would rather disable it.

Well that sucks. That's what I thought because I tried looking through all the settings but thought I might have overlooked something since every other launcher lets you disable it.

Do you mean the Social Panel? Shift+f3 to bring it up, then hover over the message with your mouse then click the x. That's the only overlay I see on the EGS.
It gave me and a lot of others, shit in Death Stranding.
