Elden Ring (From Software RPG)

First DLC trailer tomorrow.
I don't play this game but I assume this is a big deal for you guys.

Due to From Software apparently now being the sole owner of the Elden Ring IP------it has been speculated that release was purposefully delayed, until From Software could self publish Shadow of The Erdtree.

Remains to be seen, but, sounds plausible. Considering that the game has likely sold close to 30 million (or more) by now (20 million in its first year).

Did anyone else here not finish the campaign? I loved this game… but I couldn’t finish it. After a hundred hours I was burnt out.

Negative. Beat it many, many times, multiple characters and just about every build type. I'm only burnt out at this point as I'm not into PVP and I need new content to get back into it, which, is clearly impending =D

TIL that FromSoft self-published within Japan, while only using Bandai Namco internationally, after looking up the Wikipedia page. So perhaps there's some merit to this.

YES!!!...Finally!...the long wait is over!...after 2+ years of development the expansion must be absolutely massive!

FromSoftware has always had that deal: BamCo publishes globally, FromSoft self-publishes in Japan.

I saw lava with a narrow path and I saw some poison grounds then an uggh spilt out of my mouth lol. June is going to suck, PC will be fighting my AC and the PC always wins. 🥵

so Messmer the Impaler (Collector's Edition statue) is supposed to be the Malenia of this expansion (in terms of the hardest boss)?...in the trailer that boss fight in the tall grass totally reminded me of Isshin the Sword Saint from Sekiro

I need to replay the base game before the expansion hits...I've only played the game once which is a rarity for me with a From Software title...my first playthrough was 340 hours so I was burnt out and needed a break

Looks ok but everything is so gaudy as usual. I don't think I'll pick it up unless the reviews are off the chart and its accessible with my current save.

it'll definitely be accessible with your current save...From Software DLC always makes it possible to jump into the DLC after you reach a certain point in the game...with a game as massive as Elden Ring they are not going to force everyone to replay the entire game

I figure I'll probably playthrough the main game again prior to the DLC dropping. At least partly to reacquaint myself with it after playing LotF and Lies of P. I've played through the game twice (one fresh, one NG+) and have saves ready to go for both just in case I don't feel like plaything through the whole damn game again. If it's anything like the DLCs for the Souls games then it will be tough AF and bordering on ludicrous difficulty once you get to NG+ and above.

Shadow of the Erdtree is From Software's "largest expansion" ever

Miyazaki details George R.R. Martin's involvement...

https://www.eurogamer.net/elden-ring-shadow-of-the-erdtree-is-fromsoftwares-largest-expansion-ever

So what can we expect from Shadow of the Erdtree? Compared with previous games, Miyazaki said this DLC is "our largest expansion to date in terms of overall volume"

It takes place in a brand new area of a brand new map, which includes a similar structure to the original game: field areas, legacy dungeons, and other dungeons of varying scale. "In terms of pure surface area, you could think of something larger even than Limgrave in the base game," said Miyazaki

Further, there will be over 10 new boss fights, plus plenty of new weapons, equipment and skills to find...and eight new weapon categories have been added to account for new weapon types...expansions for previous FromSoft games are notorious for upping the difficulty - Bloodborne's The Old Hunters especially...Miyazaki stated Shadow of the Erdtree will be on a similar footing to the endgame of Elden Ring, though the general approach to challenge has not changed

Miyazaki specifically mentioned the infamous Malenia boss fight - an extremely tough, yet optional battle. "So players who look for that sort of challenge in our games will find a challenge on equal footing in the DLC as well," he said

Seems like they put a lot more time in the DLC since they canceled out 5 in-house games to concentrate more on quality.

This is the most exciting detail, for me:

FromSoft has also developed its approach to field design. Previously the divide between field and dungeon areas was quite distinct. "This time, we wanted to go more in depth and bring a denser and richer level design, which brings these types of layout together a little more seamlessly," said Miyazaki. "There of course will be large open areas, there of course will be legacy dungeons, but we've also experimented with something a little more in-between these as well to bring a more diverse gameplay experience."

I guess they're confident with the scope of it, seeing as it's like 2/3 the price of what I paid for the base game.

I’m seeing this argument a lot elsewhere, seems like very few appreciate the immense breadth and depth of content we were gifted for a measly $60.

Perhaps my intent wasn't clear, as of course I can appreciate the content in the base game. There are also other games packed with content for the same price. My post means just that: that based on the price I'm inferring that it's a substantive expansion rather than something smaller in scope.

Unless there's some suggestion that any DLC should subsidize the base game since it was an unfair price to begin with. Shrug. There are various games I wish I could just keep paying for more substantive content in a way that wasn't GaaS but expansions are rare these days, so best we typically get are overpriced cosmetics and such. I'm all for proper expansions.

From Software undersold just how massive the map was in the base game so I'm hoping they are doing the same with the expansion...they mentioned it being the size of Limgrave but it could be filled with places to explore, secret areas, illusory walls, underground areas etc

it's going to be a long 4 months but luckily Forbidden West PC and Dragon's Dogma 2 can fill in the time...I also still haven't played Alan Wake 2 and Cyberpunk 2077...now that I have my 4080 Super I can actually play them the way I want with the eye candy maxxed out

duuuude, you really really need to start your Cyberpunk playthrough like right now.

How does From Software release AAA games so frequently?

Elden Ring boss says "we are just blessed with a great staff" that the studio empowers and retains..."We're able to understand quickly what we want to make"...

https://www.gamesradar.com/how-does...t-staff-that-the-studio-empowers-and-retains/
Which is in stark contrast to Microsoft's policy of using outside contractors for everything, and look at how that has worked out for them.

They keep everything in house and Japanese work culture loves working 80+ hours a week and do it without complaining.
The Japanese work 80 hours a week! What?

Edit: Maybe developers do? I don’t know. I couldn’t find anything. But a quick google search reveals that the Japanese work, on average, 40 hours a week, just like most of us.

Also, I’m not convinced that game developers in other parts of the world aren’t working crazy hours as well. I’ve heard otherwise.

I have no special knowledge here, but this sounds kind of fishy to me, that the Japanese work harder than everyone else and are happy to do it?

It would be burnout city if they did that all the time. vegeta is probably just over exaggerating a bit.
